Guyger, who lived in an apartment one floor below Jean's unit, told investigators she mistook Jean for an intruder after she entered his apartment by mistake and he appeared in the darkness, police said. Guyger walked into the apartment after returning from a work shift and was able to enter because Jean's door was slightly ajar, according to a Texas law enforcement account of the incident.

Police fired tear gas, stun grenades and water cannon in battles with protesters around the Arc de Triomphe near the Champs-Elysees avenue and clashes were reported elsewhere across the city centre as well as in other towns across the country. Police said they had arrested 169 people and some are concerned that violent far-right and far-left groups were infiltrating the "gilets jaunes" (yellow vests) movement, a spontaneous grassroots rebellion against the struggle many French face to make ends meet. For three weeks, protesters have blocked roads across France, posing one of the largest and most sustained challenges Emmanuel Macron has faced in his 18-month-old presidency. President Emmanuel Macron returned from a G20 summit in Argentina on Sunday morning and went directly to the Arc de Triomphe to assess the damage at the historic monument caused by so-called "yellow vest" anti-tax protestors. The arch, which lies at the top of the prestigious Champs Elysées avenue, was where the violence kicked off early on Saturday morning before spreading as far as the Louvre and the Opera districts. Under heavy security, Mr Macron spoke with police and firefighters on one of the avenues near the Champs Elysées, with some bystanders cheering but more jeering him, including yellow-jacketed protesters chanting, "Macron, resign!" Young men, many of them with their faces masked, had battled riot police throughout Saturday in some of the capital's poshest areas, smashing shop windows, overturning cars and torching buildings and vehicles, including at least one police car.
