Trump govt backs suit alleging Harvard anti-Asian admissions policyThe US Justice Department accused Harvard University Thursday of discriminating against Asian applicants, ramping up the Trump administration's opposition to widespread policies seeking to manage racial balance among students. The department filed a statement with the Boston federal court endorsing a lawsuit by an Asian students group that charged the prestigious university with preferring whites, blacks and Hispanics at the expense of more academically deserving Asians. The move came two months after the Trump government announced it was cancelling the previous Obama administration's support for so-called "affirmative action" programs, by which universities seek to boost the numbers of under-represented minorities, particularly Hispanics and African-Americans.

International Space Station astronauts plug leak with finger and tape after being hit with debris

Posted: 30 Aug 2018 11:53 PM PDT

International Space Station astronauts plug leak with finger and tape after being hit with debrisThe International Space Station (ISS)has sprung a leak after being hit by space junk or a micrometeorite. Mission flight controllers in Houston and Moscow noticed a drop in pressure on Wednesday night and after a search on Thursday, astronauts discovered a 2mm hole in the Russian section of the station. Although the leak is small, if it had not been spotted the crew would have run out of air in 18 days. The damage was found by closing hatches to each module one at a time, and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Alexander Gerst initially plugged the gap with his finger, before duct taping over the hole to prevent more air leaking into space. During a live feed from the ISS, Nasa's ground control were heard to comment: "Right now Alex has got his finger on that hole and I don't think that's the best remedy for it." The International Space Station's cabin pressure is holding steady after a repair was made to address a leak on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft that had caused a minor reduction of pressure. More... https://t.co/qgxgPrtPDEpic.twitter.com/QQozo48sOP— Intl. Space Station (@Space_Station) August 30, 2018 Later, the two Russian spacemen put sealant on a cloth and stuck it over the area, while their colleagues took photos for engineers on the ground. Flight controllers, meanwhile, monitored the cabin pressure while working to come up with a better long-term solution. Mission Control outside Moscow told the astronauts to let the sealant dry overnight and that more leak checks would be conducted on Friday. The makeshift repairs seem to have stabilised the situation, at least for now, officials said. Earlier, flight controllers tapped into the oxygen supply of a Russian cargo capsule to partially replenish the atmosphere in the station. The current crew of the ISS, Drew Feustel, Ricky Arnold, Serena Auñón, Alexander Gerst, Oleg Artemyev and Sergey Prokopyev Credit: Nasa A spokesman for the ESA said: "Last night International Space Station mission control noticed a reduction of pressure. This morning the crew gathered in the Russian segment of the Space Station before searching for the cause of the pressure change. "Working with mission control in Houston, USA, and Moscow, Russia, the astronauts localised a leak that appears to be in the Russian segment. The crew are working through troubleshooting and repair procedures. "The crew are healthy and safe with weeks of air left in the International Space Station reserves." The damage is believed to have occurred when a micrometeorite or piece of space debris hit the station. Experts have warned for several years that the amount of junk orbiting the Earth, from defunct satellites and spacecraft poses a grave danger to the ISS. But this is the first time any significant damage has been caused. Experts have warned for several years about the dangers from space junk Since 1957, more than 5,250 launches have led to more than 23,000 tracked objects in orbit around Earth. But only about 1,200 are working satellites – the rest are debris and no longer serve any useful purpose. Many derelict craft have exploded or broken up, generating an estimated 750,000 pieces larger than 1 cm and a staggering 166 million larger than 1 mm spinning round the globe at 30,000 mph. Last year the ESA appealed to satellite operators and space agencies to clear up their retired crafts warning that pieces of space junk had "tremendous relative velocities, faster than a bullet, and can damage or destroy functioning space infrastructure". In March a prototype space "litter picker" designed by the University of Surrey was sent to the ISS. The tiny spaceship will perform two experiments to deploy and then capture a small 'cubesat' satellite, first using a net, and then using a harpoon. If it works it could be sent up to clear Earth's orbit of dangerous debris. As well as Gerst, there are five other astronauts on board. Commander Drew Feustel, FlightEngineers Ricky Arnold and Serena Auñón-Chancellor of NASA,  and Oleg Artemyev and Sergey Prokopyev of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, gathered in the Russian segment of the station and, after extensive checks, reported that the leak appears to be on the Russian side of the orbital outpost. There is currently a Russian Progress cargo ship docked at the ISS and Roscosmos is recommending using oxygen from its tanks to repressurise the station. A spokesman for Nasa said: "Programme officials and flight controllers are continuing to monitor the situation as the crew works through its troubleshooting procedures."

Scallops row warnings 'fell on deaf ears', say UK fishermen, after French 'hurl rocks and smoke bombs' at boats

Posted: 29 Aug 2018 04:22 AM PDT

Scallops row warnings 'fell on deaf ears', say UK fishermen, after French 'hurl rocks and smoke bombs' at boatsBritish fishermen have claimed that warnings about an extraordinary clash over scallops in the English Channel fell "on deaf ears". French mariners have been accused of endangering the lives of their UK counterparts after rocks, smoke bombs and other projectiles were allegedly hurled at English and Scottish vessels during the confrontation in the early hours of Tuesday. Around a dozen British boats were targeted by the rival flotilla in a protest over fishing rights in the scallop-rich waters exacerbated by Brexit talks. The Government said it had contacted officials in France about the matter, adding the vessels were "legally entitled" to fish in the area. But some British fishermen have claimed they had previously reported similar skirmishes over the past two years to the authorities. "Nothing happened, it just went on deaf ears," said Brixham-based mariner Derek Meredith. Around a dozen UK fishing boats were targeted by a rival French flotilla in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy early on Tuesday The South Western Fish Producers Organisation, which represents many of the boats and has been negotiating with French fishermen, condemned the behaviour as dangerous. Chief executive Jim Portus said: "They are endangering life at sea by being unprofessional. The French might look like heroes to the French coastal communities, but it's really awful to put other mariners in danger." Around 40 French boats were said to be responsible for the disruption. One of the British ships, The Golden Promise, had a window smashed by an airborne can, while another suffered fire damage after a flare was thrown at it, Mr Portus said. A smashed window onboard of Golden Promise at the Brixham Harbour in Devon, which was broken by a rock thrown by french fishermen Credit: SWNS.com  He claimed to have received a message from the chief negotiator of the French scallop industry on Wednesday morning that said: "I regret the altercations that occurred... it will not happen again." 'It's happened before... the French navy were there and did nothing' It is not the first time such a clash has taken place, according to the owner of one of the Brixham boats involved. Derek Meredith told the BBC: "It's happened in previous years, two years ago it happened to us - not as forceful as this time I wouldn't have said - but the same thing, the French navy were there on site and never done a thing. "We reported it to the (Marine Management Organisation), nothing happened, it just went on deaf ears." The skipper of Joanna C, Nathan Clark, also told the broadcaster: "I'm not really concerned because we're doing nothing wrong... it's just the safety of my crew and the boat really, because there's nothing to stop them doing it all over again." Fishermen Callum Clark and Nathan Clark onboard Joanna C at the Brixham Harbour in Devon after they were attacked Credit: SWNS.com  Britain's National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations has appealed for calm, while the Scottish White Fish Producers Association lashed out at the "vigilante behaviour". Long-running dispute over section of Channel Maritime authorities in France also sought to soothe tensions on Wednesday, decrying the showdown as "very dangerous" and expressing hope that "things will calm down". The long-running dispute centres on a section of the Channel from which French fishermen cannot harvest scallops until later in the year, due to domestic environmental laws. Dramatic footage broadcast by France 3 Normandie showed boats colliding as tensions finally boiled over. The Honeybourne 3, one of the British boats involved in the clash, was moored in Shoreham Port on Wednesday morning. A black spatter mark was visible on the vessel's stern while dents and scrapes marked the port side bow. MP claims 'no evidence' that French have taken action against vessels Fears have been raised about the safety of the British fleet, which the Government said was its "highest priority". Sheryll Murray, MP for South East Cornwall, claimed Environment Secretary Michael Gove had assured her that "appropriate measures" were in place to protect fishermen. She also criticised the response of the French authorities, saying there was "no evidence whatsoever" that they had taken action against the vessels. Dimitri Rogoff, head of a Normandy fishermen's association, said the violent scenes "demonstrate the exasperation of Normandy fishermen in a situation which persists and does not change". A history of fishing 'wars' At a glance | The "Cod Wars" UK government: Safety of fleet is highest priority A British government spokesman said: "We are aware of reports of aggression directed towards UK fishing vessels in an area of the English Channel not under UK control. "These vessels were operating in an area they are legally entitled to fish. "The safety of the UK fleet is our highest priority and we will continue to monitor the presence and activities of vessels in the area. "We are in contact with industry and the French administration to encourage meaningful dialogue and prevent further incidents from occurring."

Security camera catches speeding Tesla going airborne after hitting railroad tracks

Security camera catches speeding Tesla going airborne after hitting railroad tracksTeslas are well known for their acceleration, but flying? A Canadian man caught some serious air after speeding over a railroad crossing in Barrie, Canada, on Tuesday at around 8 p.m. local time. A security camera happened to catch the incident, and holy crap. SEE ALSO: Elon Musk opens up about the personal toll Tesla is taking on him The 46-year-old driver "became airborne and crashed over 100 feet into the opposing lane," according to Barrie Today. The Tesla skidded after landing, and eventually hit a tree in a parking lot. Considering Teslas are, you know, not supposed to fly, it's not surprising that the four-door vehicle, which appears to be a sedan, was totaled. The exact model was not released.  Global News reports that the driver of the vehicle was charged with dangerous driving, and was treated at the hospital for minor injuries along with a passenger. Thankfully, no other vehicles were involved.  Teslas are relatively heavy cars thanks to the electric battery, so it's safe to say that the vehicle's impressive acceleration capabilities did help the vehicle go airborne, though given the charges it appears that police are blaming the driver. Here's what the driver saw before liftoff:  Image: screenshot/google mapsA Redditor who claims to live in the area said it's quite easy to get airborne on the tracks: "I live near here and you literally just need to be going 30 to get air. The guy is a moron." WATCH: Say goodbye to your crutches with this hands-free alternative

Texas police search for woman seen in mysterious doorbell video Authorities in Texas are trying to find a woman who was captured on video ringing a doorbell in the middle of the night. It happened early Friday in Montgomery when a concerned resident shared the video with the sheriff's office. The video, taken on a home CCTV camera shows a barefoot young woman wearing a T-shirt and what could be broken restraints around her wrists. The woman was gone before the resident got to the door. The resident reviewed the security footage and sent it to police. The sheriff's office says it has received numerous reports that the woman is a missing person.  However, authorities have not verified that.   The incident which police are calling "suspicious" occurred at around 3.20am in Sunrise Ranch, 60 miles north of Houston. An unnamed neighbour told ABC News the same woman rang the doorbells of other homes in the area, but had also vanished by the time anyone answered. Authorities have conducted a door-to-door search of local homes and businesses and circulated images of the woman on social media.

US midterms: North Carolina’s gerrymandered congressional map unconstitutional and must be redrawn, judges rule

US midterms: North Carolina's gerrymandered congressional map unconstitutional and must be redrawn, judges ruleFederal judges have struck down North Carolina's Republican-gerrymandered congressional map as illegal for a second time, in a decision that could leave officials in the state scrambling just months before the midterm elections in November. The ruling is the latest development in a case that fair elections advocates say features such drastically gerrymandered districts that it could represent one of the clearest chances for the Supreme Court to clarify the constitutionality of extreme partisan gerrymandering in America in general, and impact congressional maps across the country. North Carolina's congressional map — created in 2011 following the US census the year before — received its first major blow in 2016, when a federal court deemed it unconstitutional, saying that the map — which essentially locks in 10 Republican districts and three Democratic ones — was racially gerrymandered.

China says it is helping Afghanistan with defense, counterterrorismChina's defense ministry said on Thursday that it was supporting Afghanistan's defense and counterterrorism efforts, a day after Beijing denied a plan to build a base in Afghanistan and to send Chinese forces to the war-torn country. China's foreign ministry on Wednesday dismissed a report by the South China Morning Post that cited sources with ties to the military as saying it was funding construction of a camp in Afghanistan's narrow Wakhan Corridor linking the two countries, and could send hundreds of troops there. The Hong Kong newspaper later updated its report to quote Afghanistan's embassy in Beijing as saying China was helping the country set up a "mountain brigade" to boost counterterrorism efforts, but that there would be "no Chinese military personnel of any kind on Afghan soil at any time".
