Taliban kills three Nato soldiers in Afghanistan suicide attack

Posted: 05 Aug 2018 06:02 AM PDT

Taliban kills three Nato soldiers in Afghanistan suicide attackA suicide bombing claimed by the Taliban killed three Czech soldiers on patrol in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, the deadliest assault on Nato troops for many months. "Three Resolute Support service members were killed by a suicide bomber during a combined, dismounted patrol with Afghan forces in eastern Afghanistan," Nato's Resolute Support mission said in a statement. In Prague, the military said the dead soldiers were Czech. A US member of the patrol and two Afghan soldiers were wounded, Nato added. The attack by a lone bomber on foot happened at 6am in the city of Charikar in Parwan province 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of Kabul, said provincial governor's spokesman Wahida Shahkar. In pictures, Looking back at British troops in Sangin, Afghanistan The Taliban in a statement claimed responsibility, saying they killed or wounded eight American soldiers in a "tactical explosion". The Czech army said in a statement that three of its soldiers - a staff sergeant and two corporals - were killed in the explosion. "The tragic death of our three soldiers has struck me deeply, and I wish to express my deepest condolences to their families," said Defence Minister Lubomir Metnar. The Nato force largely ended its combat mission in Afghanistan in 2014 and pulled out the bulk of its troops. A 16,000-strong residual force remains for training and counter-terrorism operations. Afghan residents walk inside a damaged mosque after a suicide attack during Friday prayers Credit: FARID ZAHIR/AFP/Getty Images Of these, the US accounts for 13,000 soldiers, about 2,000 of whom are assigned to anti-terror combat missions. Last month a US soldier was killed and two others wounded in an "apparent insider attack" in southern Afghanistan. Casualties among the Nato force have fallen dramatically since most were withdrawn from combat. But the Taliban and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) have recently stepped up their attacks against government and civilian targets. On Friday two suicide bombers dressed as women struck a Shiite mosque in Gardez, the capital of Paktia province, while it was crowded with worshippers for weekly prayers. Thirty-five were killed and more than 90 wounded. The burqa-clad attackers shot at the mosque's security guards before opening fire on worshippers and then detonating their explosives.

Hiroshima bomber tasted lead after nuclear blast, rediscovered Enola Gay recordings reveal

Hiroshima bomber tasted lead after nuclear blast, rediscovered Enola Gay recordings revealTaped recordings and transcripts of interviews with the pilot and crew of the Enola Gay have been donated to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, 40 years after they were apparently lost and 73 years after the aircraft dropped the first atomic bomb used in warfare on the city. The 27 tapes cover 30 hours of interviews and are accompanied by 570 pages of typed transcripts that were collected by Gordon Thomas and Max Morgan-Witts before the publication of their book, "Enola Gay: Mission to Hiroshima", in 1977. Officials of the museum told the Mainichi newspaper that it had been feared that the recordings had been subsequently lost.  They added that the recordings and documents are historically important to the overall story of the attack on Hiroshima because they reveal what was happening inside the aircraft during the mission as well as the feelings of the crew.  The transcript records Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the B-29 Superfortress, stating that the mission was shrouded in secrecy and that the crew had been issued with handguns and cyanide tablets in case they were shot down.  Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui (R) offers a new list of A-bomb dead, including individuals who died since last year's anniversary from the side effects of radiation Credit: AFP Mr Tibbets also said he had a taste like lead in his mouth the instant the bomb detonated above the city and a "big relief".  "I got the brilliance. I tasted it. Yeah, I could taste it. It tasted like lead", Mr Tibbets said. "And this was because of the fillings in my teeth. So that's radiation, see. So I got this lead taste in my mouth and that was a big relief - I knew she had blown".  Mr Tibbets put the Enola Gay into an evasive turn immediately after the bomb detonated, but the crew could feel the shockwave of the blast.  "If you can imagine yourself inside a tin building and somebody comes along on the outside and hits it with a hammer, you get the sound effect", he said, adding that he could also see the mushroom cloud expanding over the city through his screen.  Doves fly over the Peace Memorial Park with the Atomic Bomb Dome in the background, at a ceremony in Hiroshima Credit: Reuters The recordings include comments by Thomas Ferebee, the bombardier who released the atomic bomb, and three other crew members.  The recordings were found in 2017 among the effects of a Japanese person, who has not been named, and were donated to the museum by his family.  On Friday, a minute's silence was marked at 8:15am - the moment the bomb detonated above what is today Hiroshima's Peace Park - in memory of those killed in the attack. An estimated 100,000 people died in the initial blast or subsequently of radiation poisoning. A second attack was conducted three days later against the city of Nagasaki, killing around 80,000 people, before Japan surrendered and ended World War II.  Kazumi Matsui, the mayor of Hiroshima, used his address at the memorial event to underline the horror of the first nuclear attack and call for more efforts to rid the world of atomic weapons.

Indonesia earthquake: At least 98 dead as tourists evacuated after 'massive' damage

Indonesia earthquake: At least 98 dead as tourists evacuated after 'massive' damageIndonesian security forces and emergency workers were racing on Monday to aid victims of a magnitude 7 earthquake on Lombok that killed at least 98 people, while tourists were being evacuated from the worst-hit areas.  The tremor, which came just a week after another quake killed 17 people on the island, was also felt on the neighbouring resort island of Bali, where frightened tourists ran onto the streets. The earthquake struck just 10km underground, according to the US Geological Survey, and was followed by a series of strong aftershocks, prompting many to spend the night outside. "The search and rescue team is still scouring the scene and evacuating (people)," national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. "We estimate the number of victims will rise." He described the damage as  "massive" in the north of Lombok, citing an example of a collapsed mosque where worshippers are believed to have been buried during evening prayers. The rescue operation has been hampered by a lack of heavy equipment.  #breaking Dramatic video of people scrambling to evacuate from Gili Trawangan Island, Indonesia. 6.9 quake killed at least 91, injured 200+ & left 20,000 homeless in Bali & Lombok. He said the death toll had risen to 91 and more than 200 people were seriously injured. Thousands of homes and buildings were damaged. The death toll was revised to 98 later on Monday. Almost 1,000 tourists were being evacuated from Indonesia's tiny Gili Islands, where the damage was extensive. The Gilis are three coral-fringed tropical islands a few kilometres off the northwest coast of the larger Lombok island that are popular with backpackers and divers. She said: "There was a lot of screaming and crying particularly from the locals. We spoke to a lot of them and they were panicking about their family in Lombok." There was widespread building damage and a somber mood on the island a day after the quake, Amis said, adding she felt lucky to be unharmed. Mr Sutopo saod some 200 "domestic and foreign" tourists had already been taken off the islands. "There are 700 more tourists still waiting to be evacuated," he added. Long lines were seen at the airport in Lombok's main town, Mataram, as foreign visitors scrambled to leave.  https://twitter.com/willripleyCNN/status/1026337753078722560 The Garuda Indonesia airline said it was adding extra flights, and AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes tweeted that the budget carrier would also try to assist the evacuation efforts.  Tourists spoke of their terror as the earthquake struck. "I was at the rooftop of my hotel and the building started swaying very hard. It felt like two metres to the left, then two metres to the right, I could not stand up," Frenchman Gino Poggiali, 43, told Reuters.  Mr Poggiali's wife Maude, 44, said they had been holidaying with their two children and were also caught up in another powerful earthquake last week.  "This is it for me in Indonesia," she said. "Next time we will stay in France or somewhere close." Australia's home affairs minister tweeted that he and his delegation had been safely evacuated in darkness from a Lombok hotel where they had been staying during a regional security conference. Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton told Fairfax Media that he was on the hotel's 12th floor when the quake struck. He said the quake "was powerful enough to put us on the floor" and cut power. Shanmugam, who was on the 10th floor of a hotel in the Lombok town of Mataram at the time of the quake, wrote on Facebook that his room shook violently and walls cracked. "It was quite impossible to stand up. Heard screams. Came out, and made my way down a staircase, while building was still shaking. Power went out for a while. Lots of cracks, fallen doors," he wrote. Why are we so bad at predicting earthquakes? Residents in Mataram felt a strong jolt, causing them to flee their buildings. "Everyone immediately ran out of their homes, everyone is panicking," Iman, a local resident, told AFP. The Indonesian Red Cross said in a Tweet that it helped a woman give birth after the quake and that she named the boy 'Gempa', which means earthquake.

The embassy tweeted that while it did not condone property damage by some of the protesters: "Nothing can justify the brutal attacks and violence over the weekend against the thousands of young people who have been peacefully exercising their democratic rights in supporting a safer Bangladesh." Curiosity rover celebrates six cold, lonely years on Mars with a tweetBeing alone on a cold alien landscape may seem like a sad way to pass six years, but for the Mars Curiosity rover, it's been a brilliant stretch.  SEE ALSO: A 12-mile, underground lake may have been found on Mars. What could live there? Sunday, Aug. 5 marked the sixth anniversary of Curiosity's historic touchdown on the surface of Mars and the rover celebrated the way we all do: with a post on social media.  I touched down on #Mars six years ago.
