US citizen held in Moscow charged with 'espionage': lawyer Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:32 PM PST Russian prosecutors have charged an American ex-Marine detained in Moscow last week with espionage, his lawyer said Thursday, the latest in a series of spying accusations between Moscow and Washington. "The tribunal has ordered the provisional detention" of Paul Whelan after he was charged, his lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov was quoted as saying by the news agency Ria Novosti. Zherebenkov said he had appealed the ruling and asked for Whelan to be released on bail pending the start of the trial. |
New Petrobras boss seeks free-market 'efficiency' for oil giant Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:49 PM PST "Monopolies restrict liberty," Roberto Castello Branco told a crowd of officials and Petrobras executives on the day he took up his functions. Petrobras a couple of years ago "was looted by a criminal organization made up of corrupt politicians, enemies of capitalism, and a small group of employees," he said. The harsh words referred to a sprawling, multi-billion-dollar corruption scandal implicating Petrobras and political parties, including those from the Workers Party that ruled Brazil from 2003-2016. |

Posted: 04 Jan 2019 03:24 PM PST Detectives are investigating after a woman at a nursing home, who had been in a persistent vegetative state for over a decade, gave birth. The woman was believed to have been a victim of sexual abuse while receiving 24-hour care. She had been treated at nursing home facility in Phoenix, Arizona after almost drowning more than 10 years ago, an incident that left her in a vegetative state. A nursing home source told local television station KPHO: "None of the staff were aware that she was pregnant until she was pretty much giving birth. From what I know the baby is alive, and the baby is healthy." The woman reportedly would not have been able to communicate to carers that she was pregnant, or that she had been a victim of abuse. A spokesman for Arizona governor Doug Ducey said: "We have been informed of the situation that occurred at this healthcare facility and find the reports deeply troubling. "The governor was briefed on these reports as soon as our office learned of them, and our state agencies immediately began taking every measure to protect patient safety." A spokeswoman for the nursing home said it had "been in business for over 50 years and has an outstanding reputation providing high quality specialised care for our patients". |
Senator Warren slams former Senator Lieberman for ZTE lobbying gig Posted: 03 Jan 2019 02:02 PM PST Democratic U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is eyeing a presidential run, blasted former Senator Joseph Lieberman for becoming a lobbyist for ZTE Corp, a Chinese telecommunications equipment maker accused of ties to China's government. In a tweet posted on Wednesday night, Warren said Lieberman had "joined" lobbyists for ZTE, which she wrote had "violated serious U.S. sanctions" against Iran and North Korea. Lieberman, who ran unsuccessfully for vice president as a Democrat in 2000 and Kasowitz Benson Torres, the firm where he is a lobbyist, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. |

Saudi prosecutor seeks death sentences as Khashoggi murder trial opens Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:32 PM PST Saudi prosecutors sought the death penalty for five of 11 defendants charged with the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as their high-profile trial opened in Riyadh on Thursday. The prosecution also said it was awaiting a response to two formal letters requesting evidence from Turkey, where Khashoggi was murdered inside the kingdom's Istanbul consulate on October 2 in a case that shocked the world. All 11 accused were present with their lawyers at the first session of the trial, it said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency, without revealing their names or their alleged roles in the crime. |

Nancy Pelosi was elected speaker of the House of Representatives as a Democratic majority took control of the chamber, ending one-party control in Washington. The California Democrat, the only woman to hold the speakership, won the partisan election with 220 Democratic votes as most Republicans backed Representative Kevin McCarthy. |
What next for Syria's Kurds? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:58 PM PST Syria's Kurds have established an autonomous region during seven years of civil war, but the abrupt decision by their US ally to withdraw has thrown their political future into doubt. Kurdish-led forces control a large swathe of the country's north and northeast, some of it seized from the Islamic State group at the cost of heavy losses with backing from the US-led coalition. A US withdrawal could leave them exposed on two fronts, both to an attack by neighbouring Turkey and its Syrian proxies, and to a return of Damascus government institutions. |

Lima Group countries say won't recognize new Maduro mandate Posted: 04 Jan 2019 05:58 PM PST Foreign ministers from 12 Latin American countries and Canada said Friday their governments would not accept Nicolas Maduro as Venezuela's president when he is sworn in for a second six-year term next week. The 14-member Lima Group -- with the exception of Mexico -- said it would not grant recognition to Maduro's hardline socialist government, after meeting in the Peruvian capital to discuss ways to step up international pressure on the regime, which has presided over the oil-rich country's economic collapse. Peru's Foreign Minister Nestor Popolizio said the group had delivered "a strong political message" ahead of Maduro's inauguration on January 10. |

U.S. House elects Democrat Pelosi to be speaker for 2019-2020 Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:21 AM PST Pelosi received 220 votes for speaker, while Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy got 192 votes. The election puts Pelosi in position to lead the opposition to President Donald Trump's agenda and to conduct in-depth investigations of his administration following two years during which Republicans have mainly given him a free pass. Pelosi, 78, was first elected to the House in 1987 and has pledged to push legislation that would spark large federal investments in infrastructure projects that Trump also has expressed an interest in tackling. |

Democratic allies should rally to protect Taiwan from China: Tsai Posted: 05 Jan 2019 01:14 AM PST Taiwan's president called on allies to help defend its sovereignty Saturday, accusing China of waging a "deliberate campaign" to undermine the island's democracy by refusing to talk to her government. Relations between Taiwan and China have been at a low since Tsai came to power in 2016, refusing to acknowledge that the self-ruled island is part of "one China". Beijing unilaterally cut off communication with her administration and stepped up military drills around the island as well as poaching several of its dwindling diplomatic allies. |

U.S. anti-Islamic State meeting turns to damage control after Syria decision Posted: 04 Jan 2019 02:49 PM PST The previously scheduled conference, tentatively set for Feb. 7 in Washington, aims to gather ministers from many of the 79 nations in the Global Coalition To Defeat Islamic State and galvanize their fight against the militant group. In the latest ambiguous signal, a senior State Department official on Friday first told reporters the United States has no timeline for the withdrawal of troops from Syria and then said it does not plan to stay indefinitely. Another senior State Department official, also briefing reporters before Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's trip to the Middle East next week, said one of his main messages would be that "the United States is not leaving the Middle East." "Despite reports to the contrary and false narratives surrounding the Syria decision, we are not going anywhere." However, three sources familiar with the matter said that the Trump administration is still working assiduously to contain the fallout from Trump's troop decision. |

Spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani, asked about reports that a Saudi prosecutor had sought the death sentence for five suspects linked to the Oct. 2 killing, reiterated the office's call for an independent investigation "with international involvement". The U.N. rights office always opposed the death penalty, she added. ... |

U.S. government shutdown further strains immigration system Posted: 03 Jan 2019 10:14 AM PST U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to continue the shutdown until he gets the $5 billion he is seeking for a wall on the Mexican border, which the opposition Democrats have refused, prompting the 13-day shutdown. Immigration judges have been furloughed, which means thousands of long-delayed deportation cases will have to be rescheduled, frustrating efforts by Trump's Justice Department to clear a backlog of 800,000 cases. Jeremy McKinney, an immigration lawyer in North Carolina, said a client who is fighting deportation had a procedural hearing canceled this week and it probably will not be rescheduled until 2020 due to overflowing dockets. |
