MSNBC Cuts Loose Two More Contributors With Biden Transition Ties

Posted: 10 Nov 2020 02:58 PM PST

MSNBC Cuts Loose Two More Contributors With Biden Transition TiesMSNBC is shedding more contributors as numerous on-air figures join President-elect Joe Biden's transition efforts. On Tuesday, an MSNBC spokesperson confirmed that Barbara McQuade and Richard Stengel will no longer be paid contributors after both were announced as part of Biden's agency review teams, which will help prepare the incoming administration to work with existing agencies. McQuade, a legal analyst for MSNBC/NBC News and University of Michigan Law School professor (and occasional Daily Beast contributor), was listed as a member of the president-elect's Department of Justice Review team; Stengel, an MSNBC political analyst, was listed on the Biden review team for the United States Agency for Global Media.MSNBC cutting ties with the two paid contributors comes just one day after the network cut loose several other contributors that have worked with Biden's campaign or transition efforts.Following a New York Times report that historian Jon Meacham had assisted the president-elect's team with speechwriting—a fact he did not disclose on-air even while commentating on Biden's victory speech—the network ended paid-contributor deals with him and Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, an MSNBC medical expert who was appointed to Biden's coronavirus task force this week. Here's How Much Money Fox News Hosts Have Made Off GOP Speaking GigsAccording to a network insider, both Meacham and Emanuel are still permitted to appear on the network as guests with proper disclosures of their Biden ties, but could no longer be paid contributors while working with the president-elect's team.NBC News and MSNBC do not allow their on-air contributors to endorse or run for office while appearing as a paid analyst on the network. According to the Washington Post, NBC News does not allow staff to work for a political campaign or political action committee while being paid by the network. While many networks have similar rules, others often allow their personalities to engage in informal political activities on behalf of campaigns that seem to push the boundaries of traditional mainstream journalistic ethics. And, in some cases, the lines have been blurred even further. For example, Fox News hosts like Sean Hannity and Jeanine Pirro have appeared on-stage at rallies with President Donald Trump, while other Fox stars have routinely made paid speaking appearances at Republican Party events and fundraisers. And on CNN, paid contributor Ana Navarro hosted a fundraiser for Biden this year, while Van Jones has acted as an informal advisor to the Trump White House on criminal-justice reform matters.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Nurse Charged With Murdering 8 Babies and Trying to Kill 10 More

Nurse Charged With Murdering 8 Babies and Trying to Kill 10 MoreA British nurse has been charged with murdering eight babies, as well as the attempted murders of 10 others, after a years-long investigation into an unexplained spike in baby deaths at a hospital's neonatal unit. It's the third time that Lucy Letby, 30, has been arrested. She was previously detained in 2018 and 2019 as authorities probed the string of infant fatalities at the Countess of Chester Hospital in England. Both times, the nurse was released with no further action against her, but she appeared in court Thursday to finally face 18 formal charges. In the courtroom, the nurse learned that she faces eight charges of "murder of a victim under 1 year old," and each infant victim's name was read aloud to her. According to BBC News, five baby boys and three girls died. They were named Cemlyn Bennett, Joseph Johnson, Barney Gee, Joseph Gelder, Eli Gelder, Elsie McNall, Daisy Parkin, and Maddie Freed.Letby did not speak in court other than to confirm her identity and her representatives have not said whether or not she plans to plead guilty. The media has been ordered not to report the names of the alleged victims of attempted murder, but there are reportedly five boys and five girls. The charges all relate to a string of baby deaths, and non-fatal collapses, at the Countess of Chester Hospital near Liverpool in 2015 and 2016. According to a National Health Service report into the incidents, the hospital launched a probe after resident doctors became concerned about what was described as a "higher-than-usual number of neonatal deaths on the unit, several of them being apparently 'unexplained' and 'unexpected.'"The police became involved a year later. This week, the inquiry's leader, Detective Chief Inspector Paul Hughes, said that Letby's third arrest came after more than three years of investigative work by his team.Susan Gilby, chief executive of the hospital where Letby is accused of committing the crimes, said in a statement that the major development was of "serious concern" and added that the trust that runs the hospital will be "fully supportive and respectful of the judicial processes."Neil Fern, who is representing some of the families in the legal case, told The Guardian: "The families are overwhelmed with the news and there is a mix of emotion. All the families now have hope that they can finally start to learn the truth of what happened in the first days of their children's lives. We have been working with the families for many years on these cases and they have had to live with the consequences for all that time."Letby is expected to make another court appearance on Friday.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Progressives blame 'divide-and-conquer racism' for Democrats' House losses

Posted: 11 Nov 2020 08:05 AM PST

Progressives blame 'divide-and-conquer racism' for Democrats' House lossesProgressive House Democrats are shifting the blame for last week's dismal House showing. As it became clear Democrats wouldn't expand their majority in the House this year, moderate Democrats began blaming their party's left wing, including in a testy post-election caucus call where Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) profanely decried any mention of "socialism" within the party. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) quickly told the party to stop "pointing fingers," and on Tuesday, a memo began circulating among progressive representatives that tried to break down just went wrong. While the memo did reflect Ocasio-Cortez's plea to stop "placing blame" before a campaign post-mortem was conducted, it did lay out progressive strategies to drive future House gains. Instead of playing into President Trump's "racist appeals against immigrants and Black Lives Matter," Democrats should "take on the Republican party's divide-and-conquer racism head-on," the memo says. Democrats should "invest in organizing the base," "connect economic justice to racial justice," and "drive an economic message that connects with all working people" as well, the memo details. As Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) put it, Democrats need to "really respect every single voice," namely those of marginalized people, instead of "silencing" them like Spanberger suggested.Part of that economic message is clear in the suggested Biden Cabinet picks the progressive Justice Democrats and Sunrise Movement unveiled Wednesday. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) as Labor Secretary and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) as Treasury Secretary top their list. Tlaib would be Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) would be secretary of state, and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison would be attorney general, among their other choices.Republicans could retain control of the Senate if Georgia's runoffs go their way, which would jeopardize hopes of approving progressive nominees. Biden said Tuesday he wouldn't let the alignment of the Senate affect his choices, and that he may announce some picks by Thanksgiving.More stories from theweek.com Trump's willing accomplices 7 scathingly funny cartoons about Trump's refusal to concede Trump is reportedly 'very aware' he lost the election but is putting up a fight as 'theater'
