Brexit leader Nigel Farage: 2016 was start of global populist revolutionBritish politician Nigel Farage heralded 2016 as the beginning of global populist revolution during a speech Friday at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in National Harbor, Md. In a speech titled "Brexit and What it Means for the World," Farage, the former leader of the U.K. Independence Party (UKIP), said that future schoolchildren would study 2016 as the dawn of a new political era — ushered in by the so-called Brexit referendum in the U.K. and the election of President Trump in the U.S. "There is one year that every schoolchild will know, and that year is the year of 2016, because in 2016 we witnessed the beginning of a global political revolution and it's one that is not going to stop.

New leak could be our first look at Samsung’s final Galaxy S8 hardware

New leak could be our first look at Samsung's final Galaxy S8 hardware

Samsung has no intention of unveiling its next-generation Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ flagship smartphones next week at the annual Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain. Of course, you wouldn't know that from watching the chatter among Android fans ahead of the show. LG has a new flagship phone set to be unveiled, Nokia will debut three new models, Lenovo reportedly has a new Moto G phone set to be unwrapped, and Huawei's upcoming new flagship is rumored to be an absolute beast. And yet all anyone can seem to focus on is Samsung and its upcoming new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ handsets, which will be nowhere to be found next week at MWC 2017.

We're not terribly surprised, considering how fantastic Samsung's next-gen Galaxy S phones have sounded in leaks and rumors. We saw the full Galaxy S8+ specs sheet leak earlier this week, and the smaller S8 specs emerged soon after. Now, a new leaked photo may very well give the world its first look at Samsung's finalized Galaxy S8 hardware.

If more than a dozen independent reports are to be believed, the upcoming new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will be two of the most impressive smartphones the world has ever seen. They're said to feature a bold redesign that does away with the home button on the front of the phone and narrows all four bezels surrounding the curved Super AMOLED displays. The result will seemingly be a much more impressive screen-to-face ratio, and we've seen a few purported early units leak and match those reports.

With the Galaxy S8 and S8+ now just over a month away from being unveiled, it's likely safe to say that hardware has been finalized. And now, a new leaked photo may very well show us that freshly finalized hardware.

The image above was posted on a website called Slashleaks this week, and it comes from a user who is believed to have posted accurate leaks in the past. While the source of the image is unclear, the gray box seen covering part of the phone's face could be covering a watermark from any one of a number of online Chinese forums, which have become increasingly popular sources of leaks in recent years.

The phone above is pictured in a protective case, so much of the back of the device is obscured. We can see the rear camera, LED flash and sensor cluster, and the relocated fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone, however. We can also see the big, beautiful display that occupies almost the entire face of the phone.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ during a press conference in late March, and the phones are then expected to go on sale on April 21st.

AT&T’s first buy one, get one free deal of 2017 features the iPhone 7

AT&T's first buy one, get one free deal of 2017 features the iPhone 7

With Mobile World Congress just around the corner, new smartphones are about to start launching in droves. LG, Motorola, HTC and even Nokia are all expected to bring unreleased handsets to the show in Spain this weekend, but if you don't care about having the latest tech or just want to save a few hundred dollars, you might want to check out AT&T's brand new buy one, get one free deal instead.

Starting on Friday, February 24th, AT&T is offering customers the chance to buy one of four popular smartphones on an AT&T Next or AT&T Next Every Year plan and receive a second phone for free. Eligible devices include the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, Galaxy S7 and LG G5. Also worth noting: the second phone has to be from the same manufacturer, so you can't buy a Galaxy S7 and get a free iPhone 7.

As always, the offer isn't as simple as "buy one phone, get a second phone with service for free." When you buy the first phone, you will have the option to add a second line to your plan. You will then receive a monthly bill credit over the course of 24-30 months totaling up to $695 to pay for the second phone.

Additionally, AT&T is still offering new customers $650 in credits for switching from another wireless provider. These credits can be applied to the first phone in the BOGO offer, but you should read the fine print:

"Each line requires an eligible port-in from an eligible carrier on their term agreement or device plan, buy a smartphone on AT&T Next or AT&T Next Every Year installment agreement with eligible service and remain active and in good standing for 45 days. Credits may not equal total switch costs."

If you need two new phones on the cheap, this offer is definitely worth your consideration.

Verizon’s unlimited advertising is confusing everyong

Verizon's unlimited advertising is confusing everyong

Verizon has rolled out a thorough ad campaign to go with its new unlimited data plan. As is normal these days, the ads focus on the pricing per line when you have four lines, which works out to $45 per line, plus taxes and fees.

Unfortunately for sales reps working in Verzion's stores, wannabe customers don't read the fine print.

Several Verizon retail sources have told BGR that customers are coming in "every hour" asking for "that $45 Unlimited plan," just to be told that actually, it's $80 plus taxes for the plan if there's just one of you. I'm sure Verizon is happy that customers are excited by the pricing of its unlimited plan, but people wanting one line for $45 per month seems to be causing serious problems for the retail outlets. One employee said that "if I have to explain the bad math to one more customer, I'm going to go [around the city] and write '$80' on every Verizon ad I can find."

A poster on the Verizon subreddit echoed the comments:

"I swear man, if another customer comes in and asks for our new $45 UDP, I'm gonna rip the posters off the walls. I'm not even cushioning my response to customers anymore. I just tell them it's gimmicky marketing math meant to get them in store. Anyone else having a lot of push back from frustrated customers on this phrasing?"

Verizon is definitely not the first wireless network to focus on the per-line unlimited cost, rather than being more upfront about the pricing. Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T have all used per-line pricing in the past, despite the fact that most people don't actually have four lines per account. Still, it seems like people have been waiting so long for a Verizon unlimited plan that this ad campaign has sparked more interest than usual.

New leak confirms Moto G5 specs, reveals second model

With just a few days to go until Mobile World Congress 2017, we know basically all there is to know about Motorola's upcoming midrange phones. The Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus have leaked repeatedly throughout the month, but before we head out for the weekend, we have just one more leak to share with you.

On Friday, the specifications for the Moto G5 appeared on GFXBench. A separate leak last week from retailer Ktronix already told us everything we needed to know about the phone, but now we have a secondary source to back up that information. So has anything changed in the week since the specs leaked?

According to GFXBench, the Moto G5 will feature a 1080p 5-inch display, 1.4GHz octa-core Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM and will run Android 7.0 out of the box. That all lines up with the information from Ktronix, but there are a few details that have changed since the last leak. While Ktronix claimed that the G5 would feature a 13-megapixel camera, the GFXBench leak only shows a 12-megapixel camera.

More importantly, the GFXBench listing appears to imply that there will be two models of the Moto G5. One will come equipped with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage while the second will have 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Presumably the 16GB model would be $50-100 cheaper than the 32GB model.

At this point, we have a mostly clear picture of what the Moto G5 and the larger Moto G5 Plus are going to look like, but there are clearly some details that leakers can't agree on. We'll know for sure when Lenovo/Motorola holds its event at MWC 2017 on Sunday, February 26th.

Power published its 2017 Vehicle Dependability Study, showing which brands are likely to cause the fewest headaches down the road.  The Dependability Study is a bit like Power's equally popular Initial Quality Study, which is typically issued in June. Both studies assess real-world data from America's registered drivers about the problems they've had with their cars, trucks, and SUVs. The difference is that the Initial Quality Study looks at issues folks have had with new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. The Dependability Study, however, looks at vehicles that are three years old--the idea being that brands that score well stand a better chance of holding up over the long term.  For the 2017 edition of its Dependability Study, Power polled 35,186 original owners of 2014 model-year vehicles, asking how many issues they'd had with their vehicles in the previous 12 months. Responses were gathered between October and December 2016. The winners, the losers Tied for first place in this year's study were two perennial top-of-the-heap contenders: luxury marques Lexus and Porsche. Each brand had a reported 110 problems per 100 vehicles during the prior year. But premium cars weren't the only ones receiving high scores: in third place was one of the world's best-known mass-market brands, Toyota, with 123 problems per 100 vehicles. Buick followed with a score of 126, and Mercedes-Benz rounded out the top five with 133. The industry average was 156 problems per 100 vehicles. That's four points higher than the 2016 average.  At the bottom of the charts were four of Fiat Chrysler's five brands (which is, unfortunately, fairly common in surveys like this). Fiat fared worst of all, with a staggering 298 problems per 100 vehicles, though in fairness, it might've been bested by Smart if Power had been able to find enough Smart owners to include in the survey.  In the penultimate spot, Jeep fared much better than its FCA sibling, with owners reporting 209 problems per 100 vehicles during the previous year. Other low performers were Infiniti (203), Dodge (187), and Ram (183). As far as individual models are concerned, Toyota was the clear winner, earning top marks in 10 of Power's 18 segments. (That's a record for this study.) Those winners included the Lexus ES, Lexus GS, Lexus RX, Toyota Avalon, Toyota Camry, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota Prius, Toyota Prius v, Toyota Sienna, and Toyota Venza. And interestingly enough, of all models--luxury and mass-market--the Toyota Camry had the fewest number of issues.  Takeaways What does all this mean for you, the buyer? Apart from fewer trips to the garage, high dependability scores could mean more money in the bank. Because of their strong performance, Power says that Toyota vehicles have resale values that are $750 higher than the national average.   It also means that when it comes to issues with your next ride, chances are they'll involve the technology on your dashboard, not the transmission. In-car tech accounted for 22 percent of all owners' visits to the shop, and more often than not Bluetooth pairing and misrecognition of voice commands were the culprits. You've been warned.

A drone flies into a tiger habitat, and you’ll absolutely believe what happens next

A drone flies into a tiger habitat, and you'll absolutely believe what happens nextAnyone who's ever used a laser pointer in the same room as a cat knows that any fast-moving object is pretty much fair game for feline ferocity. Knowing that, it's hard to imagine exactly what this drone pilot was thinking when allowed the pricey airborne gadget to get within swiping distance of an entire family of tigers. Whatever made him do it, the video is a treat to watch. The drone, which was being operated by reporters hoping to snag some up-closeup shots of Siberian tigers in China's Heilongjiang Province, made several low passes over the big cats, immediately piquing their interest. The tigers began following the drone around, slowly at first, but quickly picked up speed as the drone dropped in altitude. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nhe_cyrHNpI It wasn't long before the drone pilot came a little too close to one of the cats, allowing it to slap the craft right out of the sky. Predictably, the tigers swarmed on the downed drone and began tearing it apart. Unfortunately, it seems the drone's battery shorted out from damage and the gadget began billowing thick white smoke, which was enough to scare the tigers off. It's undeniably adorable to watch the huge cats act like little kittens at the sight of the flying toy, but it's also pretty obnoxious that the reporters flying the drone allowed it to get within paw's reach of being knocked down. At the end of the day, the drone and its pilot got exactly what they deserved.

Tesla now offers insurance and maintenance for life

Tesla now offers insurance and maintenance for lifeSelf-driving cars are going to ruin everything--in a good way. If all goes as planned, they'll dramatically reduce auto accidents and highway fatalities; boost fuel efficiency; minimize traffic jams; and maybe even cut the number of vehicles we own. Autonomous vehicles are likely to wreak havoc on the insurance industry, too. For insurance agents who might not be worried about that doomsday scenario just yet, they should take a look at Tesla. That's because Tesla has slowly begun offering lifetime insurance policies to some buyers--and that package covers vehicle maintenance, too. The automaker hasn't widely discussed the feature, but it became public knowledge during an earnings call earlier this week. According to Tesla's President of Global Sales and Service, Jonathan McNeill, the insurance and maintenance package has been quietly rolling out to shoppers in Asian markets, where it's proven very popular. In fact, McNeill says that the majority of Tesla buyers in Asia have opted to shell out for the package. Tesla hasn't yet confirmed the price of the package, nor has it hinted when it might be available to shoppers in other markets. However, the offering clearly stems in large part from the company's confidence in its semi-autonomous (and soon, fully autonomous) Autopilot software.  Would you be willing to pay upfront for a lifetime insurance and maintenance package? If so, how much? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Trump asks NASA to explore putting crew on rocket's debut flightBy Irene Klotz CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - The Trump administration has directed NASA to study whether it is feasible to fly astronauts on the debut flight of the agency's heavy-lift rocket, a mission currently planned to be unmanned and targeted to launch in late 2018, officials said on Friday. The study marks President Donald Trump's first step in shaping a vision for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Under former President Barack Obama, the U.S. space agency was working on the heavy-lift Space Launch System rocket and Orion deep-space capsule with the aim of sending astronauts to rendezvous with an asteroid in the mid-2020s, followed by a human expedition to Mars in the 2030s.
