Japan bolts whaling commission, but tensions may easeJapan has made good on years of threats by bolting the International Whaling Commission, but its decision may also offer a way out of tensions that looked inextricable. Japan, which calls whaling part of its cultural heritage, said Wednesday it would withdraw from the seven-decade-old commission which since 1986 has banned commercial killing of the ocean giants. Australia and New Zealand have been outraged by Japan's incursions into waters they consider a whale sanctuary and activists harassed the whalers in often dangerous chases.

UAE reopens Syria embassy in boost for AssadDAMASCUS/DUBAI (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates reopened its embassy in Damascus on Thursday, marking a diplomatic boost for President Bashar al-Assad from a U.S.-allied Arab state that once backed rebels fighting him. The UAE said the move aimed to normalize ties and to curb risks of regional interference in "Arab, Syrian affairs" - an apparent reference to non-Arab Iran, whose support for Assad has been critical to his war effort. "The UAE decision ... came after a conviction that the next stage requires the Arab presence and communication in the Syrian file," tweeted Anwar Gargash, the UAE minister of state for foreign affairs.

Mike Tindall reveals garish Christmas suits he wears at Sandringham have Queen's approval because she 'loves bright colours'

Mike Tindall reveals garish Christmas suits he wears at Sandringham have Queen's approval because she 'loves bright colours'A garish, red patterned suit may not spring to mind as the first choice of what to wear to Christmas with the Queen at Sandringham, but Mike Tindall has said his festive attire has her stamp of approval. The former professional rugby player, who is married to Zara Tindall, the Queen's granddaughter, said the monarch loves bright colours and encourages the family to wear them in happy times. "This year we opened presents on Christmas Eve - I wore one of these.  "And just to give a little punch on Christmas Morning I came down in a different little set up. "The queen loves bright colours it's why she wears all those amazing colours that she does wear, she thinks that dark colours are for sad times." Speaking to website JOE, he also revealed that two years ago, when the Queen was unwell and he and his wife were recovering from a miscarriage, the three spent Christmas morning together. Mike Tindall, husband of Zara, wears garish suits to Christmas at Sandringham Credit: JOE He explained: "Christmas, two years ago, [the Queen]wasn't feeling very well so she didn't go to church. We'd obviously been through what we'd been through with our pregnancy, which we lost, so we did our own little private just as a three. "I had a suit on like this and thought 'maybe I should be wearing something a little bit different today' but  I was trying to raise the mood." Christmases at Sandringham are a world away from the festive celebrations he enjoyed in Otley, West Yorkshire, when he was growing up, he said. Mr Tindall revealed: "It's quite a strange day as if you're from up north...I usually spend the whole day in my boxer shorts or my tracksuit so by the time I'd have normally got up I've been to church twice, which is quite strange for me. "It's completely different - I've never had to take as many outfits anywhere." The Royals celebrate Christmas with presents and a turkey feast on Christmas Eve, because the Queen likes to give her staff the day off on the 25th. Mr Tindall added: "Basically she loves all the staff that she has working for us so she would give as many the day off that she can." He also said the Queen watches her own speech on Christmas Day with her family.

Search for missing British cruise ship entertainer suspendedThe United States Coast Guard has suspended the search for a missing British cruise ship entertainer. In a statement, the coast guard said it had ended the search for 20-year-old Arron Hough at about 2.30pm on Thursday, two days after he reportedly went overboard. Crews searched for approximately 83 hours and covered more than 3,700 square miles, the statement added. Commander Christopher Douglas, Coast Guard Sector San Juan chief of response, said: "We've been in contact with members of Mr Hough's family throughout our search efforts and know this is a very difficult and painful time for them. "Suspending a search is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make as first responders, and it is never made lightly." Aaron Hough went missing from the ship on Christmas Day Credit: Facebook Mr Hough, from Sunderland, disappeared from the Royal Caribbean ship on Christmas Day. The vessel, named Harmony Of The Seas, was 267 miles (430km) north-west of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, at the time and was travelling to Philipsburg, St Maarten. US government shutdown to continue into new year as Congress locked in row over border wall

Posted: 28 Dec 2018 01:46 AM PST

US government shutdown to continue into new year as Congress locked in row over border wallThe US government partial shutdown was set to stretch deep into next week after legislators failed Thursday to make a breakthrough in the row over President Donald Trump's demand for a US-Mexico border wall. After convening for just a few minutes following the official Christmas break, a still nearly empty Senate adjourned, deciding to renew budget deliberations only next Wednesday, the last day of the current Republican-controlled Congress. That would take the government shutdown, already on its sixth day, into 12. Both sides have dug in, with Democrats refusing to provide $5 billion for Trump's border wall project and the president insisting he will not fully fund the government unless he gets the money. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders accused Democrats of "openly choosing to keep our government closed to protect illegal immigrants rather than the American people." Republican Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas speaks briefly to reporters after he opened and closed a brief session of the Senate on Thursday Credit: Scott Applewhite/ AP She said Trump "will not sign a proposal that does not first prioritize our country's safety and security." As long as the wall debate holds up approval of a wider spending bill, about 800,000 federal employees are not getting salaries and non-essential parts of the government are unable to function. Trump made clear he does not intend to give way first. In a tweet Thursday, he once more accused Democrats of wanting to encourage illegal immigrants, "an Open Southern Border and the large scale crime that comes with such stupidity!" "Need to stop Drugs, Human Trafficking, Gang Members & Criminals from coming into our Country," he said in another tweet, also lambasting "Democrat obstruction of the needed Wall." Opponents, including some in his Republican party, accuse the president of exaggerating the danger from illegal immigration for his own political gain. "No end in sight to the President's government shutdown," Dick Durbin, a senior Democratic senator, tweeted. "He's taken our government hostage over his outrageous demand for a $5 billion border wall that would be both wasteful and ineffective." Partial government shutdowns are not an unusual weapon in Washington budget negotiations, where party divides make cooperation a rarity. But the rancor has spiraled under Trump's abrasive administration and is set to go even higher after January 3 when the Democrats take over the House of Representatives, following their midterm election victory. The mess has contributed to worries over the outlook for the US economy in 2019, following a surging 2018 performance. The stock market has plummeted in recent days, before a record recovery on Wednesday, under a variety of factors including Trump's barrage of criticism against the independent Federal Reserve. Continuing the see-saw performance, Wall Street opened sharply lower Thursday but ended solidly higher on bargain hunting. Large sections of the nearly 2,000-mile (3,200 kilometer) border with Mexico are already divided by fences and other barriers. But immigrants - some fleeing danger and others just looking for jobs - continue to cross illegally.
