The ministry, which did not specify which flights had been threatened, added that Syrian air defenses had destroyed 14 of 16 Israeli missiles launched against unspecified targets near Damascus on Tuesday. Three Syrian soldiers were injured in the strikes, Syrian state media reported. |

Search for missing British cruise ship entertainer suspended Posted: 27 Dec 2018 05:31 PM PST The United States Coast Guard has suspended the search for a missing British cruise ship entertainer. In a statement, the coast guard said it had ended the search for 20-year-old Arron Hough at about 2.30pm on Thursday, two days after he reportedly went overboard. Crews searched for approximately 83 hours and covered more than 3,700 square miles, the statement added. Commander Christopher Douglas, Coast Guard Sector San Juan chief of response, said: "We've been in contact with members of Mr Hough's family throughout our search efforts and know this is a very difficult and painful time for them. "Suspending a search is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make as first responders, and it is never made lightly." Aaron Hough went missing from the ship on Christmas Day Credit: Facebook Mr Hough, from Sunderland, disappeared from the Royal Caribbean ship on Christmas Day. The vessel, named Harmony Of The Seas, was 267 miles (430km) north-west of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, at the time and was travelling to Philipsburg, St Maarten. The last CCTV footage available of Mr Hough showed him heading on to the ship's deck at around 4am, according to a statement issued by Royal Caribbean. However, staff on board the ship only realised he was missing when he did not report to work later that day. The United States Coast Guard was alerted to Mr Hough's disappearance at 1.45pm. Royal Caribbean and the coast guard were unable to confirm how far the ship had travelled during that time. |

Posted: 27 Dec 2018 08:13 AM PST Billionaire Reid Hoffman apologised on Wednesday for funding a group linked to a "highly disturbing" effort that spread disinformation during last year's Alabama special election for US Senate, but he said he was not aware that his money was being used for this purpose. Mr Hoffman's statement is his first acknowledgement of his ties to a campaign that adopted tactics similar to those deployed by Russian operatives during the 2016 presidential election. In Alabama, the Hoffman-funded group allegedly used Facebook and Twitter to undermine support for Republican Roy Moore and boost Democrat Doug Jones, who narrowly won the race. |

US government shutdown to continue into new year as Congress locked in row over border wall Posted: 28 Dec 2018 01:46 AM PST The US government partial shutdown was set to stretch deep into next week after legislators failed Thursday to make a breakthrough in the row over President Donald Trump's demand for a US-Mexico border wall. After convening for just a few minutes following the official Christmas break, a still nearly empty Senate adjourned, deciding to renew budget deliberations only next Wednesday, the last day of the current Republican-controlled Congress. That would take the government shutdown, already on its sixth day, into 12. Both sides have dug in, with Democrats refusing to provide $5 billion for Trump's border wall project and the president insisting he will not fully fund the government unless he gets the money. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders accused Democrats of "openly choosing to keep our government closed to protect illegal immigrants rather than the American people." Republican Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas speaks briefly to reporters after he opened and closed a brief session of the Senate on Thursday Credit: Scott Applewhite/ AP She said Trump "will not sign a proposal that does not first prioritize our country's safety and security." As long as the wall debate holds up approval of a wider spending bill, about 800,000 federal employees are not getting salaries and non-essential parts of the government are unable to function. Trump made clear he does not intend to give way first. In a tweet Thursday, he once more accused Democrats of wanting to encourage illegal immigrants, "an Open Southern Border and the large scale crime that comes with such stupidity!" "Need to stop Drugs, Human Trafficking, Gang Members & Criminals from coming into our Country," he said in another tweet, also lambasting "Democrat obstruction of the needed Wall." Opponents, including some in his Republican party, accuse the president of exaggerating the danger from illegal immigration for his own political gain. "No end in sight to the President's government shutdown," Dick Durbin, a senior Democratic senator, tweeted. "He's taken our government hostage over his outrageous demand for a $5 billion border wall that would be both wasteful and ineffective." Partial government shutdowns are not an unusual weapon in Washington budget negotiations, where party divides make cooperation a rarity. But the rancor has spiraled under Trump's abrasive administration and is set to go even higher after January 3 when the Democrats take over the House of Representatives, following their midterm election victory. The mess has contributed to worries over the outlook for the US economy in 2019, following a surging 2018 performance. The stock market has plummeted in recent days, before a record recovery on Wednesday, under a variety of factors including Trump's barrage of criticism against the independent Federal Reserve. Continuing the see-saw performance, Wall Street opened sharply lower Thursday but ended solidly higher on bargain hunting. Large sections of the nearly 2,000-mile (3,200 kilometer) border with Mexico are already divided by fences and other barriers. But immigrants - some fleeing danger and others just looking for jobs - continue to cross illegally. |

Bright light in big city mystifies New Yorkers after transformer fire Posted: 28 Dec 2018 12:37 AM PST "There was a boom and a bang and a flash of light," said Jim Long, a spokesman for Fire Department New York. The blue flashes that briefly lit up the night sky in the Astoria area of Queens, New York, shortly after 9 p.m. (0200 GMT) were caused by a power surge and electrical "arching" and sparked a transformer explosion and a small fire, said Con Edison spokesman Bob McGee. |

North Carolina-based Twitter user Melia, who goes by @meliatinnin, said her dad had kept the treasured voicemail on his phone, but his daughters found a different way to preserve it. "Of course, I think so," he added, when asked whether the Syrian leader can triumph in the next presidential vote. Work is scheduled to start early next year on a new constitution for Syria ahead of UN-supervised elections. |
German police probe curious case of 9-year-old's unwelcome Christmas gifts Posted: 26 Dec 2018 05:09 PM PST Many children know the heart-sinking moment when they tear off the bright wrapping of their coveted Christmas gift to reveal the wrong colour trainers or an ill-favoured toy. Having dialed the emergency services hotline on Tuesday, the child explained to police that he had not received any of the gifts he had requested for Christmas. "The officers arrived and found a very angry little boy," said a spokesman from the local police in Zetel, in northwestern Germany, according to the Nordwest Zeitung newspaper. |

Morocco rescues over 360 migrants at sea: military source Posted: 27 Dec 2018 12:33 PM PST Morocco's navy on Thursday rescued 367 mostly sub-Saharan migrants in the Mediterranean sea after they attempted to reach Spain, a military source told AFP. Morocco stopped 68,000 attempted illegal migrants and dismantled 122 "active criminal networks" in the first nine months of 2018, according to a recent official count. Alongside migrants arriving from sub-Saharan Africa, an increasing number of young Moroccan citizens have attempted to leave the country on board inflatable dinghies in recent months. |
Trump Now Says Most Furloughed Federal Workers Are Democrats Posted: 27 Dec 2018 06:29 AM PST "Do the Dems realize that most of the people not getting paid are Democrats?" Trump tweeted Thursday morning, prompting outrage from some congressional rivals. Trump provided no evidence to support the claim, but he has been trying to blame Democrats for the partial government shutdown -- now in its sixth day -- that hinges on his demand for $5 billion to build a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border. |

Israeli ex-general, polling closest to Netanyahu, joins 2019 election race Posted: 27 Dec 2018 09:45 AM PST A former Israeli armed forces chief who opinion polls show poses the toughest challenge to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bid for reelection next year formally established a political party on Thursday. Details about Benny Gantz's Israel Resilience Party, leaked to local media after it was registered, gave little indication of its ideological tilt. Along with preserving Israel as "a Jewish and democratic country", the party pledged unspecified changes to priorities in national security and the economy. |
