Cohen Reiterates That Trump Directed Hush Payments to Women Posted: 14 Dec 2018 11:59 AM PST Cohen's first since he was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison for a host of crimes including those payments -- he rebuffed Trump's assertions that he had acted on his own and that Trump had relied on him as a lawyer to say if something was illegal. Cohen insisted Trump acted knowingly. "Nothing at the Trump Organization was ever done unless it was run through Mr. Trump," Cohen said. |

Turkey won't 'give up' on Khashoggi murder probe: minister Posted: 14 Dec 2018 04:22 PM PST Turkey's foreign minister said Saturday his country would "not give up" on finding out the truth about the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul. "We haven't received any new information or outcome of the investigation from the Saudi side," Mevlut Cavusoglu said on the sidelines of a conference in Turkish ally Qatar. Earlier this month, the minister said Turkey was in talks over a possible United Nations investigation into the October 2 murder, which has provoked global outrage. |

Painful memories for family of Guatemalan girl who died in US custody Posted: 16 Dec 2018 07:29 AM PST Outside a humble thatched-roof home deep in the lush Guatemalan countryside, the mother of a seven-year-old girl who died after being detained by US border agents tries to remember happier days with her daughter. The 27-year-old woman mournfully points to a nearby tree that young Jakelin Caal enjoyed climbing. "I feel pain and sadness over the death of my daughter," said Claudia Maquin, speaking in her native Maya Q'eqchi' language through an interpreter. |

Malaysia's Mahathir says no rights to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli capital Posted: 16 Dec 2018 02:22 AM PST Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Sunday criticized Australia's move to recognise West Jerusalem as Israel's capital, saying countries had "no rights" to do so. Australia's move follows U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv in May, which infuriated Palestinians and the wider Islamic world and upset Western allies. "Jerusalem should remain as it is now and not the capital of Israel," Mahathir told Reuters on the sidelines of an event in Bangkok. |

Yemenis fear collapse of UN-backed ceasefire accord Posted: 15 Dec 2018 11:58 AM PST Residents of Yemen's flashpoint port of Hodeida and other cities fear a UN-brokered ceasefire could collapse at any moment, saying that after four years of conflict any accord is deeply fragile. The Red Sea port of Hodeida, a main frontline between rebels and loyalist forces backed by a Saudi-led military coalition and a key conduit of aid, had woken to calm after weeks of confrontation. Saturday morning saw calm return to Hodeida, but shops and schools remained shuttered as gunmen deployed in the south and east. |

Trump spreads fake right wing claim about missing text messages between FBI agents Posted: 15 Dec 2018 11:53 AM PST Donald Trump has falsely claimed texts between former FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page were "wiped clean and gone" – despite a new report revealing the messages were not initially included in a Justice Department probe due to a technical error. "Such a big story that will never be covered by the Fake News," he continued. The FBI's automated collection tool failed to collect five months of text messages between the agents due to a technology failure, according to a report released by the Justice Department's office of the inspector general. |

Qatar says Gulf Arab bloc needs reform to give it teeth Posted: 15 Dec 2018 12:11 PM PST Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said Qatar was still counting on Kuwait and other regional powers to help solve the row that has seen Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and non-GCC member Egypt impose a political and economic boycott on Doha since June 2017. "They have mechanisms in place and never trigger them (to hold people accountable) because some countries believe they are non-binding, so we need to make sure all the rules we are submitting to are binding to everyone in this region." The four states accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism and cosying up to regional foe Iran. Doha denies the charges and says the boycott aims to curtail its sovereignty. |
Israel says 4th 'attack tunnel' found from Lebanon Posted: 16 Dec 2018 12:53 AM PST Israel's army said Sunday it has uncovered another Hezbollah "attack tunnel" leading from Lebanon into its territory, the fourth since it started a search-and-destroy operation this month. Israel says the Iranian-backed Shiite militant group has dug the infiltration tunnels for use in a future conflict, and the military has been working to eliminate them. The latest tunnel crossing into northern Israel was exposed at the weekend, the army said in a statement. |

Giuliani Says ‘Over My Dead Body’ Will Trump Meet With Mueller Posted: 16 Dec 2018 09:53 AM PST Giuliani, who'd at times floated the possibility of a meeting in interviews over several months, didn't answer directly when asked about a CNN report on Dec. 14 that Mueller wants to interview Trump in his investigation of Russia influence in the 2016 campaign. In a separate interview on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday, Giuliani was less definitive when asked whether it's possible Trump will talk to Mueller. |

Nations agree on global climate pact rules, but they are seen as weak Posted: 15 Dec 2018 03:15 PM PST After two weeks of talks in the Polish city of Katowice, nations finally reached consensus on a more detailed framework for the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to limit a rise in average world temperatures to "well below" 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels. After he struck the gavel to signal agreement had been reached, ministers joined him on the stage, hugging and laughing in signs of relief after the marathon talks. The unity which underpinned the Paris talks has fragmented, and U.S. President Donald Trump intends to pull his country - one of the world's biggest emitters - out of the pact. |
