Many young U.S. men at high risk for HIV do not take anti-HIV pill Posted: 12 Dec 2017 02:20 PM PST By Natalie Grover (Reuters Health) - Less than 4 percent of young adult men-who-have-sex-with-men in the U.S. – a population at significant risk of contracting the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) – reported ever using the pill that protects them from the virus, in a recently published study. "We have had a sense that PrEP is not reaching the communities that could benefit from it most, but the overall level of 3.4% is surprisingly low," said Dr. Ryan Westergaard, an infectious disease physician at UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin, who was not involved in the study. Approved in the U.S. in 2012, the pill is marketed by Gilead Sciences Inc. under the brand name Truvada. |

Rights group criticizes China for mass DNA collection in Xinjiang Posted: 13 Dec 2017 03:29 AM PST Chinese authorities have collected DNA and other biometric data from the whole population of the volatile western region of Xinjiang, Human Right Watch said on Wednesday, denouncing the campaign as a gross violation of international norms. Hundreds of people have been killed in Xinjiang in the past few years in violence between Uighurs, a mostly Muslim people, and ethnic majority Han Chinese, which Beijing blames on Islamist militants. Police are responsible for collecting pictures, fingerprints, iris scans and household registration information, while health authorities should collect DNA samples and blood type information as part of a "Physicals for All" program, the New York-based group said in a statement, citing government a document. |

Fortified by family and China cash, Cambodia's strongman digs in Posted: 13 Dec 2017 08:06 PM PST Secured by family and party ties, Chinese cash and his own ruthless political instincts, Cambodian strongman Hun Sen has taken a wrecking ball to the kingdom's fragile democracy in a campaign to extend his 32-year rule. The 65-year-old is now the world's sixth longest-serving civilian leader, bumped up a place by last month's fall of Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe. The event was choreographed to show Hun Sen as the pivot point of a nation that is now effectively a one-party state after the main opposition party was dissolved by the Supreme Court. |

Sirens, doves as China marks 80 years since Nanjing massacre Posted: 12 Dec 2017 09:05 PM PST Sirens blared and thousands of doves were released as Chinese President Xi Jinping presided over a sombre ceremony in Nanjing marking 80 years since the wartime massacre in the city by Japanese troops. "China and Japan are close neighbours, neighbours who can't move away," said Yu Zhengsheng, a former member of China's top Communist leadership who now chairs a parliamentary body. China and Japan should build on their "long, rich history" of links to deepen "friendship", Yu said, avoiding reference to bitter disputes over the massacre. |

Alibaba, JD.com Can't Lose in China Posted: 13 Dec 2017 08:34 AM PST In 2017, Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE: WMT) has proven that there's plenty of room for two e-commerce giants to thrive in the U.S. market. According to Stifel analyst Scott Devitt, there's no need for U.S. investors to pick between Alibaba Group Holding Ltd ( BABA) and JD.com Inc ( JD) in China. While Alibaba and JD continue to compete with each other for market share, both will likely deliver huge growth numbers in the years ahead. |
