China stages drills in warning to US and South Korea amid nuclear tensions Posted: 05 Dec 2017 01:13 AM PST China has staged military drills near North Korea in a defiant warning to Washington and Seoul that it will uphold a "balance of power", a military expert said, amid ongoing US-South Korean war games. The Chinese exercise in the Yellow and East seas near the Korean peninsula follow the launch of joint drills by the US and South Korea involving dozens of stealth jets and the simulation of precision attacks on the North's military installations. The US-South Korea drills come after Pyongyang last week fired its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile in defiance of the UN. The Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile, Credit: KCNA via KNS Chinese Air Force Air Force spokesman Shen Jinke announced China's drills on social media on Monday evening, saying that military aircraft "arrived in air lanes and regions that we have never been to before." There were no details on when the drills took place, but Mr Chen said the manoeuvres involved "fighter jets, early warning aircraft and surface-to-air missile forces." "The Chinese air force will conduct high-sea exercises under combat conditions on a regular basis," the spokesman added. The drills come amid heightened tensions in North-east Asia, with sources from both the US and North Korea saying over the weekend that the possibility of war is growing every day. Wei Dongxu, a Beijing-based military analyst said the Chinese drills were aimed at warning the South Korean and US military they would be expelled from Chinese airspace. They also sent a more general message to Seoul and Washington, he said. "China is showing that it can uphold the balance of power in the region." Additional reporting by Christine Wei. |

Brown, 71, was convicted in May on 18 counts of participating in a conspiracy involving a fraudulent education charity, concealing material facts required on financial disclosure forms and filing false tax returns. Brown, a Democrat from Jacksonville who served 24 years in Congress, lost her re-election bid last year after being indicted. |

Pentagon signals open-ended troop commitment in Syria Posted: 05 Dec 2017 01:11 PM PST The US military plans on staying in Syria as long as necessary to ensure the Islamic State group does not return, a Pentagon official told AFP on Tuesday, as the fight against the jihadists winds down. "We are going to maintain our commitment on the ground as long as we need to -- to support our partners and prevent the return of terrorist groups," Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon said. The United States currently has approximately 2,000 troops on the ground in Syria, where they have been helping train and advise Kurdish and Arab partner forces in the fight against IS. |

Now, That's Deep! Mariana Trench Fish Lives 5 Miles Down Posted: 04 Dec 2017 12:28 PM PST But a deceptively vulnerable-looking fish is not only right at home in the very deepest ocean environment on Earth — where few creatures can survive — it's also one of the region's top predators. Dubbed the Mariana snailfish, it swims in the Mariana Trench near Guam, at a depth of about 26,200 feet (8,000 meters). The snailfish's small, pink and scaleless body hardly seems capable of surviving in such a punishing environment, but this fish is full of surprises, researchers reported in a new study. |

Iran asks Muslims to disrupt Israeli ties in region: TV Posted: 05 Dec 2017 05:04 AM PST Iranian President Hassan Rouhani urged Muslims on Tuesday to disrupt what he called a plot by unnamed countries in the region to build ties with Israel. "Some regional Islamic countries have shamelessly revealed their closeness to the Zionist regime (Israel)," Rouhani said in a speech broadcast live by state TV. "I am sure that the Muslims around the world will not let this sinister plot bear fruit." Both Saudi Arabia and Israel view Iran as the main threat to the Middle East. |

Posted: 06 Dec 2017 12:10 AM PST Donald Trump is expected to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital today, a move which would upend decades of US policy and risk potentially violent protests. Despite warnings from Arab, Muslim and Western allies, the US President will instruct the State Department to begin the process of moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city. Mr Trump said ahead of the announcement that his decision on Jerusalem was "long overdue". |

Could America's Old Battleships Sink the Navy's New 'Stealth' Destroyers? Posted: 05 Dec 2017 05:18 PM PST No one has ever hit an Iowa class battleship with 150 6" shells over the course of 30 minutes. Undoubtedly, Wisconsin's armor would provide a great deal of protection from 6" shells armed with fragmentation (rather than armor piercing) warheads. The Wisconsin is armored against 16"/45 shells, which are much heavier and have much greater penetrating power than the land attack munitions fired by Zumwalt. |
