In the city of Gunsan, where the factory with 2,000 workers is, shuttered store fronts and empty streets near the plant are a stark reminder of the depressing impact on the rural town. Grief as Zimbabwe opposition icon Tsvangirai dies Posted: 15 Feb 2018 03:38 AM PST Zimbabwe was plunged into grief Thursday following the death of veteran opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, roundly praised as a hero, champion of democracy and symbol of resistance who will be hard to replace. The former trade union stalwart who posed the most formidable challenge to the ruling ZANU PF party's nearly four-decade hold on power, died on Wednesday in a hospital in neighbouring South Africa where he was being treated for colon cancer. Zimbabwe's new President Emmerson Mnangagwa lauded his party's arch-rival as "a strong trade unionist and opposition leader" and vowed free elections in honour of Tsvangirai who was assaulted, jailed and humiliated under his ZANU-PF government. |
How 1 Very Special Submarine Ravaged Japan During World War II Posted: 14 Feb 2018 11:13 AM PST At midnight on July 23, the Barb slipped up to within a kilometer of the shore, and a landing party commanded by Lt. William Walke, paddled quietly to the beach. While three men took up guard positions—they encountered a sleeping Japanese guard in a watchtower, whom they left unharmed—the other five buried the demolition charge and managed not blow themselves up jury-rigging the detonation circuit. In the closing months of World War II, heavy losses and depleted fuel stocks kept many of Japan's remaining combat aircraft grounded and warships in port, awaiting an anticipated amphibious invasion. |

Haas was in the passenger seat of a Ferrari which crashed into a BMW in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood at 6.30pm local time on Tuesday evening. The 71-year-old driver of the Ferrari, a member of the family whom Haas and his family were staying for the upcoming Genesis Open tournament, was pronounced dead at the scene. Haas, who is ranked 67 in the world, has been released from hospital after suffering no broken bones in the crash. The 50-year-old female driver of the BMW remains in a serious condition. His father told the Golf Channel his son was "very fortunate" and expects him to make a full recovery. Luke Wilson's car was 'clipped' in the incident Credit: AP Detective Jeff Fischer from the Los Angeles Police Department told local television station KTLA: "I can confirm Luke Wilson was driving the vehicle, the Toyota FJ that was travelling northbound. His vehicle just basically got clipped by the Ferrari. "Mr Bill Haas was the passenger in the Ferrari. Apparently, from what I was told, he's doing OK too." The Ferrari was "travelling at speed" say police and flipped multiple times following the collision. One person was pronounced dead at the scene Credit: RMG News / MEGA Officer Mike Lopez from the Los Angeles Police Department told the Palisades Post: "I believe the cause was a high rate of speed and the individual lost control, colliding into several vehicles." The PGA Tour and Haas' management said in a joint statement that Haas would be withdrawing from the Genesis Open at the nearby Riviera Country Club. The Ferrari was badly damaged in the crash Credit: KTLA "While Bill escaped serious injuries and has been released from the hospital, he is understandably shaken up and – more importantly – his deepest condolences go out to the host family during this tragic and difficult time. "Bill will withdraw from the Genesis Open and plans to head home to Greenville to recover. He appreciates the support of friends, family and the golf world as a whole, and he has asked for privacy as he processes what has happened." Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash and are analysing CCTV footage from a nearby private residence. |

Pakistan has been scrambling in recent months to avert being added to a list of countries deemed non-compliant with terrorist financing regulations by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a measure that officials fear could hurt its economy. The United States has been threatening to get tough with Islamabad over its alleged ties with Islamist militants, and last month President Donald Trump's administration suspended aid worth about $2 billion. |

Tom Daley announces he and his husband are having a baby Posted: 14 Feb 2018 06:15 AM PST Tom Daley has announced that he is going to have a child with husband Dustin Lance Black. It appears they are to use a surrogate, as the pair posted a photograph of a sonogram on Instagram. The two made a Valentine's announcement, posting on their social media feeds: "HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!" with an accompanying image of the baby scan. The Olympic diver, 23, and the director, 43, became engaged in October 2015 and were married last May. They met at an industry event, when Tom made the first move by typing his mobile phone number into the Oscar-winning director's phone, with an invitation to call him. A very happy #ValentinesDay from ours to yours. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/6ugN3Ho6y3— Dustin Lance Black (@DLanceBlack) February 14, 2018 The pair have wanted a family since they met; Mr Black told OUT Magazine in 2016: "We were so busy making all these plans - we both wanted to have children; we both wanted to build a home of our own someday. I draw, so I was sketching little plans for houses on cliffs overlooking oceans, while Tom watched over my shoulder - it was a very grown-up version of playing house. "Marriage is the foundation to all of these other big plans we have. So we knew we were going to get engaged—it was just a matter of when, and who does it." HAPPY VALENTINES DAY! ❤️❤️ A post shared by Tom Daley (@tomdaley) on Feb 14, 2018 at 5:44am PST Last year, they tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at a lavish golf resort in Dartmoor national park. Mr Daley wrote: "05.06.17 the day I married the love of my life shared with 120 of our closest family and friends from Texarkana to Plymouth". Mr Daley, 22, was said to have re-enacted the balcony scene from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, calling Black, who is 20 years his senior, his Romeo. A spokesperson said: "Tom and Dustin are thrilled to share that they are expecting their first child in 2018." |

Chinese paper says UK trying to grab attention with South China Sea mission Posted: 13 Feb 2018 05:20 PM PST Britain's Defence Ministry is trying to justify its existence and grab attention with a planned mission by a British warship to the disputed South China Sea next month, a Chinese newspaper said on Wednesday. A British warship will sail through the South China Sea to assert freedom-of-navigation rights, British Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said in remarks published on Tuesday during a visit to Australia. British officials first flagged the voyage six months ago and the journey is likely to stoke tensions with China, who claim control of most of the area and have built military facilities on land features in the sea. |
