Four California elected officials named in huge dump of sexual harassment claims Posted: 02 Feb 2018 04:45 PM PST California's legislature released years' worth of records detailing sexual harassment investigations of elected officials and staff. The toppling of powerful men in the worlds of entertainment, media and politics has reverberated through California's government, the seat of the world's sixth-largest economy, with multiple elected officials stepping aside after being accused of sexual misconduct and another on a leave of absence pending an investigation. The legislature released documentation of workplace harassment amid mounting demands for more transparency, including in a letter from more than 100 women in California politics. |

After Korean thaw, UN chief pushes 'serious' talks Posted: 02 Feb 2018 10:47 AM PST UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Friday that it was "absolutely essential" for key players to hold "serious" talks on North Korea's nuclear crisis to build on a thaw in relations between Pyongyang and Seoul. Guterres will pay an official visit to South Korea next week for talks with leaders in Seoul and to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. "Our objective remains the peaceful denuclearization of the Korean peninsula," Guterres told reporters at UN headquarters. |

China Has Its Very Own 'Javelin' Tank-Killer Missiles Posted: 02 Feb 2018 07:15 PM PST This also increases the maximum range by one kilometer, giving it an effective range of five kilometers. The HJ-9A improves the HJ-9 further, adding a millimeter wave (MMW) seeker to the missile, effectively making it fire and forget. Internal sources state that the HJ-9B's seeker will be up to the PLA's decision, whether to retain the MMW seeker or to return to laser guidance. |

Indiana to impose Medicaid work requirements Posted: 02 Feb 2018 01:29 PM PST Indiana said on Friday it will require its Medicaid recipients work or do some other form of community engagement, becoming the second state to make this fundamental change to the 50-year-old health insurance program for the poor. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said it approved Indiana's waiver to add these requirements to its Medicaid program on Friday. The work requirement applies to able-bodied working age Medicaid enrollees, according to HHS. |

Black unemployment figures soar in US, days after Trump takes credit for record low Posted: 03 Feb 2018 06:05 AM PST Black unemployment rates in America have soared by almost one per cent after Donald Trump took credit for bringing them down to a record low. Statistics showed the percentage of African Americans out of work hit 6.8 per cent in December – the lowest rate since the figures were first broken down by race, in 1972. General unemployment rates in America have stayed low at 4.1 per cent for the fourth straight month, with around 200,000 jobs added in January. |
Police release 'kidnapped' priest in DR Congo Posted: 04 Feb 2018 06:14 AM PST Congolese police have released a Catholic priest hours after they snatched him this weekend following a mass in Kinshasa, the cleric said Sunday, amid spiralling tensions between the church and the government. Security forces had grabbed Father Sebastien Yebo outside his church on Saturday morning, beaten him and thrown him into a jeep, with witnesses describing the incident as a "kidnapping". The guerilla movement, based in Kasai province, has been leading a bloody rebellion since 2016 against moves by President Joseph Kabila to extend his stay in power. |
What David Brooks Doesn’t Understand About Abortions After The Second Trimester Posted: 02 Feb 2018 05:41 PM PST As much as New York Times columnist David Brooks likes to distance himself from President Donald Trump's brand of republicanism, there is at least one thing the two men have in common: They both have a horribly inaccurate picture of why women get abortions after 20 weeks, what the procedure entails and the toll abortion restrictions take on women. |

It worked for Nigel, who showed up on the island in 2013, the first gannet to land there in 40 years. The ranger who found Nigel's corpse, Chris Bell, said the experience was "incredibly sad," reported the BBC. |

The U.S. Military Has a New 'Bullet' That Attacks At Mach Six (with 100 Mile Range) Posted: 03 Feb 2018 07:27 PM PST The Department of Defense is preparing to test-fire a next-generation hypervelocity projectile (HVP) — a supersonic shell that can hit targets up to 100 nautical miles away at speeds approaching Mach 6 — in the next year, defense officials announced on Jan. 25, a development that could significantly augment that Pentagon's existing missile defense systems. The Navy's Office of Naval Research started developing the HVP more than a decade ago as ammunition for its vaunted electromagnetic railgun system, and the Pentagon's secretive Strategic Capabilities Office announced in 2016 that it had also engaged Army and Air Force to quickly develop a new Hypervelocity Gun Weapon System for the lethal new projectile. |

Posted: 03 Feb 2018 04:53 AM PST The Pentagon has warned Russia is developing a "nuclear-armed, undersea autonomous torpedo", as Donald Trump's administration outlined a more aggressive stance towards Moscow. The US defence department said Russia has been constructing a "new intercontinental, nuclear-armed, nuclear-powered" weapon, in a policy statement known as the Nuclear Posture Review (NPR). The Trump administration announced it would continue much of President Barack Obama's nuclear weapons policies, but would take a harder line towards Russia. |

Ecuador votes on re-election limits, likely dashing Correa comeback Posted: 03 Feb 2018 10:15 PM PST By Alexandra Valencia QUITO (Reuters) - Ecuadoreans on Sunday vote in a referendum on whether to prevent unlimited presidential re-election, with polls indicating the motion will likely pass and block former leftist President Rafael Correa from returning to power. President Lenin Moreno proposed the referendum to change the constitution in what was widely seen as a bid to halt Correa, his former mentor, from running for office again amid a bitter political dispute. Moreno, a wheelchair-bound former vice president elected last year, says the change would strengthen the oil-rich Andean nation's democracy. |

Pentagon pushes for new, low-yield nuclear weapons Posted: 02 Feb 2018 02:47 PM PST The US military wants to revamp its nuclear arsenal and develop new low-yield atomic weapons, largely in response to Russian actions in recent years, the Pentagon said in a policy statement released Friday. The so-called Nuclear Posture Review outlines the Pentagon's nuclear ambitions under President Donald Trump and is the first time since 2010 that the military has spelled out how it foresees nuclear threats in the coming decades. "The strategy develops capabilities aimed at making use of nuclear weapons less likely," Trump said in a statement. |
Oregon is producing three times more marijuana than it can consume Posted: 03 Feb 2018 06:49 AM PST Oregon is producing three times more marijuana than it can consume with "formidable" amounts now ending up on the black market, officials have warned. US Attorney Billy Williams told law enforcement representatives from across the US on Friday that the state, where recreational cannabis use is legal, had a serious overproduction problem. Mr Williams said officials needed a "bottom-line answer" on how much excess marijuana was being produced and how much of it ends up on the black market. |

Posted: 02 Feb 2018 02:40 PM PST By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - North Korea violated United Nations sanctions to earn nearly $200 million in 2017 from banned commodity exports, according to a confidential report by independent U.N. monitors, which also accused Pyongyang of supplying weapons to Syria and Myanmar. The report to a U.N. Security Council sanctions committee, seen by Reuters on Friday, said North Korea had shipped coal to ports, including in Russia, China, South Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam, mainly using false paperwork that showed countries such as Russia and China as the coal origin, instead of North Korea. |
