New York City’s First Ever Queer Liberation March Showed a New-Old Way to Feel Pride

New York City's First Ever Queer Liberation March Showed a New-Old Way to Feel PrideTasia Jensen/The Daily BeastThere was excitement in the air as marchers gathered just south of the Stonewall Inn on Sunday morning for the first ever Queer Liberation March, organized by the Reclaim Pride Coalition. This was the anti-Pride Pride, with an express rejection of corporations and police involvement, although the police stood on the sidewalks as this was a large-scale, New York City parade. New York City Gets Ready for the Battle of the LGBT Pride MarchesThe idea was to reclaim Pride and channel the anger and spontaneity of the Stonewall Riots, whose 50th anniversary are being marked this year. It was also taking place the day of the massive, and very corporation-heavy, World Pride parade, which was taking place on different streets a few hours later. The route aped the first ever Christopher Street Liberation Day March of 1970, held a year after the Stonewall Riots, going down West 10th Street and then on to Sixth Avenue, all the way to Central Park, with a noticeable swelling of numbers when it reached Bryant Park. Anyone could join the parade, and the range and diversity of ethnicities, ages, and genders was very apparent. There were many placards for the group Gays Against Guns, and condemnatory shouts for the NRA. There were pro-choice protesters and placards in remembrance of iconic activists like Marsha P. Johnson, Harvey Milk, and Bayard Rustin. The mood was very much one of an old-school, inclusive Pride march, with protest and intersectionality the focus alongside a sense of community camaraderie and focus. Marchers who spoke to The Daily Beast were elated at the feeling of the march, its purpose, and apparent success. On the Great Lawn of Central Park at march's end, a rally took place. There, speakers included veteran activist, author, and playwright Larry Kramer, who beseeched the assembled to involve themselves in activism and protest to make him feel "proud" again.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Canadian group blames corporate interests for firing anti-Trump artist whose work went viral

Canadian group blames corporate interests for firing anti-Trump artist whose work went viralA Facebook statement from the president of the Association of Canadian Cartoonists took aim at one of Canada's richest men in the controversy over an artist's Trump-critical cartoons.Canadian political cartoonist Michael de Adder, whose previous syndication reached over a million readers a week, was released from his contract to draw for newspapers in his native New Brunswick after he posted sensitive anti-Trump art on social media. The cartoon, which appeared on his accounts June 26th, depicts the American president standing over the bodies of Oscar Alberto Martinez and Angie Valeria, two El Salvadoran migrants who recently drowned while attempting to cross the Rio Grande River into Texas (as a caution, the art behind that link can be considered disturbing). In de Adder's piece, Trump holds golf clubs and asks the prone figures if they "mind if he plays through," highlighting Trump's assumed indifference to the human cost of his administration's immigration policies. The art quickly went viral, even more so after de Adder announced that he was let go from New Brunswick newspapers the Times & Transcript, the Daily Gleaner, and the Telegraph-Journal-- all of which are owned by Brunswick News.De Adder announced the news on June 28 via Twitter and followed up with the clarification that he was let go from his contract, not fired, as he was not technically an employee; he also expressed sadness over no longer being able to draw for New Brunswick papers but insisted he was "not a victim." > My cartoons will no longer appear in @TimesTranscript @DailyGleaner @TJProvincial @TJGreaterSJ> > -- Michael de Adder (@deAdder) June 28, 2019> I've got to admit, it hurts pretty bad. I'm a New Brunswicker.> > -- Michael de Adder (@deAdder) June 28, 2019Two days after de Adder lost his contract, the president of the Association of Canadian Cartoonists released a statement on Facebook that speculated de Adder was let go to mollify J.K. Irving. The Canadian billionaire (listed at the fourth richest person in Canada) owns both the Brunswick News and J.D. Irving, Limited, a conglomerate with numerous international trade interests. In the statement, association president Wes Tyrell wrote that despite de Adder being known for drawing anti-Trump art, he had been discouraged from doing so for Brunswick News outlets. Tyrell also claimed that while Irving's papers had never published de Adder' Trump cartoons (including the piece in question) the amount of attention de Adder received for this particular cartoon put a target on his back. "Trade has been an issue since Trump took office, trade that affects the Irvings directly," Tyrell wrote, adding, "not to mention a host of other issues. And the President himself is an unknown quantity who punishes those who appear to oppose him."Tyrell connected Irving's dual ownership of Brunswick News and J.D. Irving, Limited and placed the blame for de Adder' situation on the billionaire's shoulders, noting that "whether the powers that be in America would make the connection between de Adder's cartoon and Brunswick News Inc doesn't matter. It seems that the Irving's [sic] don't want to take that chance. So they cut all ties. A solid reason why an oil company has no business owning newspapers."  WATCH: 2018 was the year of the youth activist

Booker not sure Biden ‘up to the task’ of fixing US racial injustice

Booker not sure Biden 'up to the task' of fixing US racial injusticeNew Jersey senator and 2020 candidate says Biden has 'an inability to talk candidly about the mistakes he made'Booker at the debate last week. He said: 'Whoever is that nominee needs to be able to pull this country together because we need to reconcile.' Photograph: Mike Segar/ReutersThe Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker said on Sunday he is not sure Joe Biden is "up to that task" of fixing America's racial injustice.Booker told NBC's Meet the Press: "Whoever our nominee is going to be, whoever the next president is going to be, really needs to be someone who can talk openly and honestly about race with vulnerability because none of us are perfect, but really call this country to common ground, to reconciliation."I'm not sure if Vice-President Biden is up to that task, given the way this last three weeks have played out, and, frankly, I know whoever is that nominee needs to be able to pull this country together because we need to reconcile."Biden leads most national and state polls; Booker performed strongly in the first debate this week and is at the rear of the leading pack. Booker, the New Jersey senator, made his remark on Sunday in response a question about a contentious exchange between Biden and Kamala Harris at the second debate in Miami.Harris interjected during a discussion of race and policing, noting that as the only black candidate on the stage, she should be able to respond. She then focused on Biden and attacked his record on race.Campaigning recently, Biden warmly recalled his working relationship with segregationist senators. Opponents pressed him to apologize, but he refused."I do not believe you are a racist," Harris said on the debate stage, as she looked directly at Biden. "But … it is personal. And it was actually hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country."Harris also accused Biden – who early in his long political career opposed the federally mandated bussing of students as a way to integrate schools – of propping up policies that would have kept minority students like herself out of majority white districts."There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bussed to school every day," Harris said. "And that little girl was me."Visibly upset, Biden said "that is a mischaracterization of my position across the board. I did not praise racists. That is not true."Booker, who is African American, told NBC Biden has "an inability to talk candidly about the mistakes he made, about things he could've done better, about how some of the decisions he made at the time in difficult context actually have resulted in really bad outcomes."He went on: "We have one destiny in this nation and right now the vice-president to me is not doing a good job at bringing folks together. In fact, and I've heard this from people across the country, he's causing a lot of frustration and even pain with his words."Another candidate, JuliĆ”n Castro, also weighed in, when asked if he thought Harris's criticism was "relevant"."Oh, of course," Castro, the former San Antonio mayor and US housing secretary, told NBC. "I think it's relevant. I think the record of all of the candidates that are running, including Vice-President Biden's record, is relevant and his stance on busing is relevant as well."What I took as his position being that he allowed local communities to make a decision, essentially relying on states' rights, I think he's going to have to continue to explain how that was a good position. Because we've had a very painful history in this country of trying to desegregate communities."That pain is still there in this country, and he's going to have to address that – not only in the debate, but I think going forward."

Navy SEAL trial exposes divide in normally secretive forceIt was called the "The Sewing Circle," an unlikely name for a secret subsect of Navy SEALs. Its purpose was even more improbable: A chat forum to discuss alleged war crimes they said their chief, a decorated sniper and medic, committed on a recent tour of duty in Iraq. The WhatsApp group would eventually lead to formal allegations that Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher fatally stabbed a wounded Islamic State captive in his care and shot civilians in Iraq in 2017.

Russia's Killer Su-57 Stealth Fighter and S-400 Headed to a NATO Member?

Russia's Killer Su-57 Stealth Fighter and S-400 Headed to a NATO Member? On May 18 2019, Erdogan stated that not only was the S-400 purchase a "done deal"—but that Turkey would engage in "joint production of the S-500 after." The S-500 is an even more advanced Russian SAM system.Amongst a host of factors behind the downward spiraling relations between Turkey and its NATO allies, one of increasing consequence is Turkey's contravention of U.S. sanctions on Russia when it signed in 2017 a $2.5 billion deal to purchase advanced S-400 surface-to-air missile systems.Turkish president Recep Erdogan has stood by the deal, even as U.S. lawmakers are threatening to ban the delivery of the 120 advanced F-35 stealth jets Turkey has ordered, and expel Turkish companies from the program entirely.(This first appeared earlier in June 2019.)Currently, the S-400s are due to arrive in July 2019 and become operational in September.  Meanwhile, the U.S. has frozen F-35-related shipments to Turkey since April.

PG&E Is Lobbying to Securitize Some Profits to Cover Fire Costs

Posted: 01 Jul 2019 02:01 AM PDT

PG&E Is Lobbying to Securitize Some Profits to Cover Fire Costs(Bloomberg) -- PG&E Corp. is lobbying for legislation that would allow the bankrupt California utility giant to securitize some of its profits to pay for past wildfire liabilities, people familiar with the matter said.PG&E was pressing California Governor Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers over the weekend to add the securitization to a sweeping bill introduced last week that would help utilities deal with the mounting damages from wildfires that their power lines keep igniting, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter isn't public. The financing may prove crucial to PG&E's exit from bankruptcy. As part of a $31 billion restructuring plan, the company is proposing a $14 billion fund to pay out victims of a series of deadly blazes that its power lines have sparked over the past two years. The utility is lobbying just as the Newsom administration is pressing lawmakers to pass the bill by a July 12 deadline -- before the rest of California's utilities possibly see their credit downgraded to junk."We remain focused on resolving wildfire victims' claims fairly and expeditiously, further reducing wildfire risks and continuing to deliver safe and reliable energy to our customers," PG&E said in a statement.PG&E filed for bankruptcy in January to deal with an estimated $30 billion in claims from wildfires tied to its equipment. The San Francisco-based company is proposing to carve out a portion of its state-approved return on equity for multiple years to help finance the $14 billion wildfire victims fund. The legislation introduced last week would, meanwhile, help utilities pay for future wildfire damages. It would also make it easier for utilities to recover costs from future fires if they obtain a safety certification. To contact the reporters on this story: Scott Deveau in New York at sdeveau2@bloomberg.net;Mark Chediak in San Francisco at mchediak@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Lynn Doan at ldoan6@bloomberg.net, Stanley JamesFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

It says it works independently, but the World Health Organization (WHO) has said there are "clear conflicts" due to the $80 million in annual funding the foundation receives from Philip Morris. At least three Indian anti-tobacco groups earlier this year wrote to the federal health ministry in New Delhi calling for the rejection of any possible partnerships with FSFW, according to copies of their representations seen by Reuters.

Hong Kong saw two record-breaking rallies earlier this month by anti-government protesters opposed to a now-postponed plan to approve extradition to mainland China. Twice in the last two weeks the city's police headquarters has been blockaded by angry crowds.

This sneaky kitten is a terrible and adorable little stalkerCats are natural predators. They can't help but hunt and stalk. This one just happens to be exceedingly bad at it.The 8-week-old kitten in question belongs to Twitter user @_TakivaBreanna. Her baby cat has developed a habit of hiding just behind a wall whenever she knows her human is approaching and then leaping out at just the right moment to surprise her much larger prey. That's the apparent intent, anyway. The execution... could be better. See for yourself.> My 8 week old kitten started doing this thing to where she will know i'm about to come in the room and she will hide by the bathroom door and jump out to scare me when i'm walking up. just thought I'd share this cuteness pic.twitter.com/SOz1ckGGpr> > -- BAE (@_TakivaBreanna) June 30, 2019Listen, Tiny Cat. You have to be smarter about this. When your human sees you peering out from behind the wall, that means she knows you're lying in wait. Your efforts to scurry into position at the last minute don't really help, given that you've already been spotted.Let's also talk about that pounce. What the eff, my little feline friend? You didn't jump forward at your prey; you jumped sideways, swinging your paws pointlessly through empty air. You shouldn't be hunting your person, let's be clear. But you're never going to catch any prey at all if you think that pounce is effective. What I'm saying is: cat better, little kitty. And don't hunt your person! You'll learn. You have a mama who loves you. She's already turned you into an internet star. We can't wait to see what you'll do next. WATCH: Your cat can achieve ultimate chill with this portable hammock

The Case for Optimism After the Trump-Kim Handshake Summit

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 06:38 AM PDT

The Case for Optimism After the Trump-Kim Handshake SummitPresident Donald Trump secured another historic first in U.S.-North Korea relations earlier today when he crossed into North Korean territory at Panmunjom before a brief meeting with Kim Jong-un. The impromptu meeting—planned in less than two days after Trump tweeted about wanting to meet with Kim—ended with an announcement that the two countries would restart working level talks in a bid to break the diplomatic impasse that has persisted since the failed Hanoi summit in late February.Any "summit" arranged on such short notice is bound to contain more symbolism than substance, and many U.S. experts are rightly noting that today's meeting has done little to move the needle toward denuclearization. However, looking at the handshake summit solely from the perspective of denuclearization misses other important aspects that increase the meeting's significance when taken into account.

Buttigieg Raises $24.8 Million in Quarter, Continuing 2020 Surge

Posted: 01 Jul 2019 05:52 AM PDT

Buttigieg Raises $24.8 MillionĀ in Quarter, Continuing 2020 Surge(Bloomberg) -- Pete Buttigieg continued his surge as a 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful, raising $24.8 million in the second quarter and cementing his status as a top-tier candidate."Thank you to the over 400,000 of you who have invested in this campaign, and who helped us raise over $24,800,000 this quarter alone. You inspire us every step of the way, and we're just getting started," the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, tweeted Monday. The fundraising haul more than tripled the amount he raised in the first-quarter in which he reported $7 million in campaign donations. At that time, Buttigieg trailed several candidates in the money race, including Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who raised $18.2 million; California Senator Kamala Harris with $12 million and former Texas congressman Beto O'Rourke, who raised $9.4 million.Former Vice President Joe Biden didn't enter the race until the last week of April. His campaign said it brought in $6.3 million on the day he announced his candidacy, tops among Democratic contenders. President Donald Trump's campaign raised $24.8 million in less than 24 hours when he officially launched his re-election campaign with a rally in Orlando, Florida on June 18, according to the Republican National Committee, though that amount included money raised for the party as well as his campaign.Candidates are due to officially report second-quarter totals to the Federal Election Commission on July 15. Some campaigns voluntarily announce the amount they raised ahead of the deadline, often to show the depth and breadth of their support. For Buttigieg, it's the second time he's been first out of the gate with his numbers. His campaign announced its totals for the opening months of the campaign on April 1.Buttigieg ended June with $22.6 million in the bank, his campaign said in an email. There were more than 294,000 donors who have contributed to his campaign in the second quarter, including 230,000 new donors in the second quarter. Overall, 400,000 individuals have contributed since Buttigieg launched his exploratory committee in February. The average donation size was $47.42, the email said. In the first quarter, Buttigieg raised $4.5 million from small-dollar donors, those who contributed $200 or less. He also received support from top Democratic fundraisers, including hedge-fund manager Orin Kramer, who raised more than $500,000 for Barack Obama's campaign in 2008, and Steve Elmendorf, a lobbyist who represents the Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Facebook Inc.In April, Buttigieg's campaign announced it would no longer accept money from registered lobbyists or allow them to raise money for it. It also announced that it would not accept money from corporate political action committees. Most of the leading Democratic candidates, including Biden, Sanders and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, have taken the same pledge.Buttigieg's $24.8 million total is impressive for a candidate in a field of 24 who began the race with little name recognition, but not record-setting. Hillary Clinton raised $47.5 million for her campaign in the same period in 2015, though at the time she faced only three opponents. In a more crowded field, Obama raised $33.1 million in the second quarter of 2007, the most among contenders in that period.(Updates with additional detail starting in fourth paragraph.)To contact the reporter on this story: Bill Allison in Washington at ballison14@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Michael Shepard at mshepard7@bloomberg.net, Elizabeth Wasserman, Kathleen HunterFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

And folks that are saying, 'No, not yet. Not yet.' OK – accepting that that's your position, what are you waiting for?" the New York socialist said to reporters this week. "Are you waiting for some kind of revelation?"That's a question a growing number of Democrats are asking. Dozens of Democrats on Capitol Hill, including 2020 hopefuls such as Elizabeth Warren, have called for impeachment proceedings in the wake of the special counsel Robert Mueller's damning report into Russia interference in the 2016 election, which also outlined numerous instances of obstruction of justice on the part of the president.Nor is it just leftwing firebrands like Ocasio-Cortez. One notable recent convert to the impeachment cause was California congresswoman Katie Porter, who announced her support by admitting: "I didn't come to Congress to impeach the president." But Porter added: "When faced with a crisis of this magnitude, I cannot with a clean conscience ignore my duty to defend the constitution."Porter's support struck a chord in Washington because, as the representative of a swing district, her announcement carried personal political risk. Most others who have called for impeachment hail from safely blue districts. Only one Republican – Michigan congressman Justin Amash – has signed up to the cause. The question now is, will the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, succumb to the growing pressure, or will she stand her ground? It is a fierce debate that is increasingly dividing the party, pitting pragmatists against ideologues, the leadership against its own members and advocates of policy who believe they have a constitutional duty to act against wrongdoing against those who prefer to wage politics and want to remove Trump by thrashing him at the 2020 ballot box.Pelosi has so far remained steadfast in opposing an impeachment inquiry on the grounds such a move would fail in the Republican-controlled Senate and could be politically divisive, potentially jeopardizing Democrats' chances at ousting Trump via the ballot box in 2020.In March, she said in an interview with the Washington Post that impeachment would be "so divisive to the country that unless there's something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don't think we should go down that path".A four-page summary later that month of Mueller's report by William Barr, the Mueller critic Trump installed as attorney general, made that position seem prescient. Barr wrote in a letter to lawmakers that Mueller did not establish collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government and that he'd punted on the issue of obstruction. Barr and his then deputy, Rod Rosenstein, cleared Trump of charges that he sought to interfere with the inquiry.> When faced with a crisis of this magnitude, I cannot with a clean conscience ignore my duty to defend the constitution> > Katie PorterBut in April, Barr released a redacted version of Mueller's 448-page report that revealed his initial summary – and a bizarre, pre-publication press conference in which the attorney general sought to spin the findings like he was a member of Trump's defense team – to be wildly misleading. On the question of obstruction of justice, Mueller laid out a series of episodes in which Trump personally sought to undermine the investigation, including by firing former FBI director James Comey and attempting to fire the special counsel himself. The reason Trump was not charged with a crime, Mueller implied, is because he did not believe justice department protocol allowed for a sitting president to be indicted.Holding the president accountable, he suggested, would necessarily be Congress, not the criminal justice system. For some Democrats, like the congressman and 2020 presidential candidate Eric Swalwell, that was a call to action."The congressman is concentrated on protecting our democracy and believes that a fair process will either remove a corrupt president or acquit him but inaction is no longer an option," a representative for Swalwell said. The momentum behind impeachment may be having some impact. Pelosi has introduced the word into her vocabulary as of late, implying that she was keeping the door open to the possibility. But she has also stayed the course, tamping down criticism from her ranks that it's Congress's duty to hold the president accountable – regardless of whether it would succeed or not.Instead, she has called for Democrats to press on with their investigations, as well as to focus on kitchen table issues such as healthcare, which helped them take back the House in the 2018 midterms and can, she hopes, propel them to victory again in 2020.As the 2020 race heats up – the Democrats have had their first televised debate and Trump has officially launched his campaign – it is hard to say what Democrats will, or should, do.On the one hand, impeachment could prove divisive. While a growing majority of Democratic voters support such a move, some polls suggest that Americans overall remain split on the matter. There are fears that impeachment could backfire on Democrats in 2020 and gift Trump another four years in office are not completely unfounded. After all, Republicans lost House seats in 1998 and 2000 as they pursued the impeachment of Bill Clinton – something that has weighed on Pelosi, her colleagues told the Atlantic. Those losses are often overstated, however, and the situations are different, both in terms of the two presidents' statures in the public's eye and the nature of their conduct. Clinton, who retained high approval ratings during the course of his proceedings, was impeached over conduct largely unrelated to his presidency.Activists call for the impeachment of Donald Trump in New York City, on 15 June. Photograph: David Dee Delgado/Getty ImagesTrump, on the other hand, has seen underwater job approval ratings for the entire duration of his presidency. What's more, the justification for his potential impeachment cuts to the heart of his duties as president. Trump has not only continued to insist he did nothing wrong and to block oversight investigations – he also said in a stunning interview recently that he would welcome foreign interference in the 2020 election if he thought it could help him win.Though Democrats appear uniformly frustrated and outraged by Trump's conduct, some aren't yet ready to greenlight impeachment."I'm not yet calling to start an impeachment inquiry," Florida congressman Ted Deutch, a Democrat on the House judiciary committee, told the Guardian. "But I will also not keep waiting as the White House engages in this unprecedented stonewalling. Obstruction of an investigation of obstruction of justice is itself obstruction of justice."For more than 70 lawmakers and counting, though, it's time to start moving on the matter – both as a practical way of holding the president accountable and as an ethical and constitutional responsibility to send a message that nobody is above the law, even if they sit in the Oval Office."The administration has refused to respect the rule of law," Porter said announcing her support for an impeachment inquiry."The question is not whether a crisis is in our midst," she continued, "but rather whether we choose to fight against it."

Russia's New PL-15 Pistol: Better Than a Glock Gun?

Russia's New PL-15 Pistol: Better Than a Glock Gun?It was tested and evaluated, but many (including firearms expert Vladimir Onokoy) found the double-action trigger to have too long of a reset for proper rapid fire. Otherwise, the ergonomics and handling of the pistol were found to be excellent. The PL-15 is hyped up by Kalashnikov Concern to be one of the best pistols in the world. Said to be light, accurate, and soft-shooting, Kalashnikov Concern plans to start producing the gun in 2019. However, the Russian military has not yet expressed official interest in procuring the gun. But should they? Does the PL-15 represent a large step up from existing sidearms? The short answer is, yes. The Russian military still predominantly uses the 9x18mm Makarov pistol, a single stack design from the 1950s. The PL-15 represents a quantum leap ahead of this ancient design, being a modern, striker-fired pistol. However, the Makarov is likely to soldier on for much longer in wide service.(This first appeared earlier in June 2019.)The story of the PL-15 begins in 2014, when Dmitri Lebedev, the pistol's namesake and primary designer, was recruited by Kalashnikov Concern to work on a new pistol. Lebedev had worked in small arms for many years prior, being an armorer and competitor for various Russian competition shooting teams.

Hunt for pet-eating python as 9ft snake goes on the loose in Cambridge

Hunt for pet-eating python as 9ft snake goes on the loose in CambridgeRabbit and chicken owners in Cambridge have been warned to be vigilant following the escape of a nine-foot reticulated python. The non-venomous snake is unlikely to pose a threat to human life but could make small animals like rabbits and chickens its prey. Police in Cambridgeshire received reports that a snake had been spotted near Lovell Road in Cambridge. In the early hours of Sunday morning officers attended the area but failed to spot the animal. The snake's owners have been located and provided police with details on the animal. Steve Allain, chairman of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Amphibian and Reptile Group said the escaped reptile poses a threat to rabbits, chickens and potentially dogs and cats but added that the latter two pets are more like to be able to defend themselves if attacked.  Mr Allain said the threat posed depends on when the animal last ate.  "We don't when it last fed or how hungry it is or how determined it is to find a meal," Mr Allain said.  Mr Allain said the "snake could be anywhere" and would be easier to locate during the colder winter months when it would seek warmth.  "With the hot weather this weekend, it will be comfortable in most places. During the winter, the first place you would look would be in and around cars where they seek the warmth of the engine." An Indonesian woman was swallowed by a 23-foot reticulated python last year but Mr Allain said this smaller creature does not pose a similar threat.  The RSPCA advised anyone that encounters the creature not to approach it. "If anyone finds a snake they believe is non-native the RSPCA's advice is to keep a safe distance, monitor the snake and call the charity's helpline on 0300 1234 999," a spokeswoman said.  Reticulated pythons are the world's longest snake, native to south-east Asia and can grow up to 31.5 feet, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica. They are not venomous. In May, Cambridgeshire Constabulary found a large orange and black striped corn snake out and about. "Road policing officers got a bit of a shock this morning when they came across thissss snake in the grass on Arbury Road in Cambridge," police said on Twitter. The snake was taken to a wildlife centre in Stretham. Anyone who sees the latest snake is asked to notify police on 101.

John Oliver Unloads on Trump for Treating ‘Murderous Autocrats’ Like Kim Jong Un Better Than Women

John Oliver Unloads on Trump for Treating 'Murderous Autocrats' Like Kim Jong Un Better Than WomenEric Liebowitz/HBOOn Sunday evening, John Oliver opened the latest episode of his Emmy-winning series Last Week Tonight by addressing President Trump's week of palling around with dictators who poison journalists and princes who dismember journalists with bone saws. This week "was a big one for Trump and diplomacy—two words that go together like 'fire' and 'Chicago 1871,'" joked Oliver. First came the G-20 summit in Osaka where, as the late-night host explained, "Trump was overseas this week meeting with his favorite authoritarians. He joked with Putin about meddling in U.S. elections, called Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman 'a friend of mine.'" If that weren't enough, "just this morning [Trump] popped across the DMZ to North Korea with Kim Jong Un, while seemingly being thrilled that he'd been invited over."He then threw to a clip of Trump seated awkwardly next to the North Korean tyrant, with Trump saying, "It's just an honor to be with you… it was an honor that you asked me to step over that line, and I was proud to step over the line. I thought you might do that—I wasn't sure—but I was ready to do it. And I want to thank you. It's been great." John Oliver on His Immigration Battle Against Trump: 'Their Actions Have Been Heinous'"Oh, that's actually nice!" Oliver exclaimed. "So Trump wanted to step over the line, was ready to do it, but waited until he received affirmative consent. What a refreshing change of pace for him! Maybe Trump's mantra going forward should be: Treat women with the same respect you show murderous autocrats. He's growing! Good for him." That last dig was surely a reference to writer E. Jean Carroll's rape allegation against Trump—making her the 22nd woman to accuse the president of sexual misconduct.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Meet the Sig Sauer 516 Rifle: The Best AR-15 Around?

Posted: 29 Jun 2019 08:30 PM PDT

Meet the Sig Sauer 516 Rifle: The Best AR-15 Around? When the HK released the HK416 in the early 2000s, it rapidly became a hit with elite military and police forces worldwide. Driven by a slick marketing campaign and favorable (albeit disputed) test results from the U.S. military, the HK416 represented a "better mousetrap" version of the AR-family of rifles for many users. Though the advantages of the HK416 have become debatable in modern years, with upgrades to traditional AR rifles enhancing their reliability, Sig Sauer, Inc looked to create their answer to the HK416 in the late 2000s. The result, released in 2010, was the SIG 516.While Sig doesn't like to emphasize the connection, the SIG 516 was conceived in many ways as a direct counterpart to the HK416. According to the late Jim Schatz, a former H&K; employee and H&K; expert, one of the key people involved in the HK416 was the lead on the SIG 516 development team. The name "SIG 516" is likely just a riff on HK416.In the basic layout, the SIG 516 also heavily resembles the HK416. Both rifles use a short-stroke tappet system placed above the barrel, which drives back a modified bolt carrier in the upper receiver. This allows the rifles to be easily compatible with most AR lowers without much modification.

O'Rourke visits Mexico, meets turned away US asylum seekers

O'Rourke visits Mexico, meets turned away US asylum seekersDemocratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke visited Mexico on Sunday and listened to tearful immigrants say they fled Central American violence and turmoil to seek asylum in the U.S., but were turned away at the border. A fluent Spanish speaker, O'Rourke met around a table at a shelter with immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, some of whom wept as they told of being denied entry into the U.S. while their asylum claims are processed. "We hope, by sharing these stories, that the conscience of our country is awoken right now, and the need to change the policies that we have in place" becomes apparent, O'Rourke said via a livestream on his Facebook page.
