| Two Marines Arrested for Allegedly Smuggling Migrants Across Border Posted: 09 Jul 2019 11:51 AM PDT  Two U.S. Marines in California were arrested last week and charged with smuggling undocumented immigrants across the southern border, according to reports.Border Patrol agents arrested Marine Lance Corporals Byron Law II and David Salazar-Quintero of Camp Pendleton on July 3, after apprehending them in their car with three undocumented immigrants, who informed authorities they were citizens of Mexico without documentation.Border authorities had observed the three migrants getting into the Marines' car when it pulled over near a frequent "pickup" spot for migrants on Interstate 8, about 20 miles east of the Tecate port of entry and seven miles north of the U.S.–Mexico border.The active-duty soldiers face the federal charge of "transportation of certain aliens for financial gain." Both confessed to authorities that they have transported migrants more than once, including the previous day.Two of the migrants "stated they were going to pay $8,000 to be smuggled into the United States" and were trying to get to Los Angeles and then New Jersey, the complaint said.Camp Pendleton will "continue to cooperate fully with the investigative efforts into this matter," according to a spokesperson for the base.Both soldiers enlisted in 2017 and have won the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Photograph: ROBERT BROCKSMITH/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/Getty Images/Science Photo Library RMA couple from New York is taking legal action against a fertility clinic claiming their IVF treatment left them pregnant with twins who were unrelated to them or each other.According to a lawsuit filed in New York by the married couple – referred to only as AP and YZ to "minimise the embarrassment and humiliation already caused" – they sought the services of CHA Fertility in Los Angeles last year after years of trying to conceive without success.When, in September 2018, the couple, from Flushing, New York, were told that they were expecting twin girls, they were "ecstatic", according to the lawsuit.But, it states, the couple were "confused" when at their three and five-month sonograms they were told they were, in fact, carrying two boys.The lawsuit claims: "Plaintiffs called [clinic owners] Defendant [Joshua] Berger and Defendant [Simon] Hong to discuss the sonogram results. Defendant Hong and Defendant Berger advised Plaintiffs that the sonogram results were not accurate and that it was not a definitive test."It adds: "Defendant Berger and Defendant Hong assured Plaintiffs that they were having girls and that nothing was wrong."But after the birth, it says, they were "shocked" to discover the two boys did not appear to be related to them.It reads: "On March 31, 2019, Plaintiff AP gave birth via caesarean section to two male babies, neither of which was of Asian descent."The lawsuit states that representatives of the defendants went to New York to meet the couple in hospital. The couple agreed for themselves and their babies to undergo DNA tests, which confirmed that they were not genetically related to the children and that the two boys were not related to each other. They then had to "relinquish custody" of the children."Subsequently, the testing revealed that Baby A was genetically matched to Couple A and Baby B was genetically matched to Couple B…As a result, Plaintiffs were required to relinquish custody of Baby A and Baby B, thus suffering the loss of two children," it reads.According to the lawsuit, the couple do not know what happened to their own two embryos, which they believe "were never thawed and/or lost or destroyed by Defendants".Attorneys acting on behalf of the couple have filed a complaint and demand for jury trial on 16 counts – including medical malpractice, negligence, reckless and wanton misconduct and deceit and fraudulent concealment.It states: "Plaintiffs have suffered significant and permanent emotional injuries for which they will not recover…In addition, Plaintiff AP underwent physical and emotional injuries for which she is still under the treatment of medical providers and will continue to be in the future."The lawsuit claims the treatment cost the couple spent "in excess of $100,000" on the treatment in charges including doctors' and facility fees, medication, travel and specialist services.CHA Fertility did not respond to a request for comment.

| Judge who said teenager who filmed himself raping girl 'deserves leniency because he's from a good family’ gets death threats Posted: 09 Jul 2019 03:42 AM PDT  A New Jersey judge who said a teenage boy accused of rape should get leniency because he came from a "good family" has received threats amid a ferocious backlash against his ruling.James Troiano denied a request in 2018 for a 16-year-old boy accused of raping an intoxicated 16-year-old girl to be tried as an adult.The Monmouth County Superior Court Judge said the defendant "comes from a good family who put him into an excellent school where he was doing extremely well."The teenage boy was accused of recording himself sexually assaulting the 16-year-old girl and sending the video to friends with the caption "when your first time is rape." Mr Troiano's decision, which surfaced last week, sparked a fierce response and has been viewed as evidence the US legal system is two-tier and has different rules for those who are privileged. The 69-year-old, who has spent almost three decades on the bench, and his family are now receiving death threats and there have been a number of calls for him to resign, reports the New York Times.Mr Troiano and his family have received multiple threatening emails and calls, according to a source who spoke to the publication.One email reportedly told the judge that should be raped by a man "stronger than you".A Change.org petition calls for the NJ State Assembly to impeach the judge and a protest is scheduled to take place at Monmouth County Superior Court later this week.The threats come as politicians and members of the public call for Mr Troiano to be disbarred, including from Democratic presidential hopeful Cory Booker. The New Jersey senator said: "Not only should this judge no longer serve - as he is clearly incapable of properly fulfilling his duties - but across the country, we must call out bad actors in the system, exposing their biases, and show women and survivors that we will doggedly pursue justice on their behalf".The teenager is accused of raping a girl, who has been referred to under the alias of Mary in court documents, in a basement during a house party in 2017.Court documents say Mary was intoxicated, slurring her words and stumbling as she walked into the basement with the teenager. They say she suffered bruising and hand prints from others slapping her on her backside, which she told her mother about the next day.Court documents say the accused teen allegedly recorded the assault and shared it with friends – adding that the girl's bare torso is exposed and her head is repeatedly banged against a wall in the recording.Mary and her family chose to press charges months later when the defendant carried on sharing the clip, despite the girl asking him to stop. Family court proceedings are usually closed to the public but some of Mr Troiano's remarks - taken from a 65-page transcript of his sealed decision - were revealed when an appeals court decision surfaced.The Appellate Division of the New Jersey Superior Court reversed Mr Troiano's decision in June - sending the case back down for further judgment.

Boeing, which has halted deliveries of the top-selling plane since mid-March, reported 239 commercial plane deliveries in 2019 through the year's midpoint, down 37 percent from the year-ago period. Airbus reported 389 deliveries for the same period, up 28 percent from the same period in 2018, according to data on its website.

The U.S. Army has expressed a desire to add extended-range fuel tanks to the AH-64E to further increase range and endurance.The US Army plans to grant Boeing a multiyear contract for the production or remanufacture of up to 600 AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters.According to a US Army notice online, the contract would consist of a five-year multiyear contract or one-year contract with options from FY2022 to FY2026. Its value is still undisclosed. As told by Flight Global, the army intends on sole sourcing the work to Boeing and posted its plan online so as to give other potentially interested parties a chance to bid.In 2017, Boeing and the US government signed the first five-year, $3.4 billion contract through which the Army, and an undisclosed foreign military customer, were to acquire the "E" variant of the Apache. As part of that contract, the US Army was to receive 244 remanufactured Apaches, while 24 new ones were to go to the international customer.

Patricio Salazar, a lawyer for some of the plaintiffs, said in a statement on Tuesday his clients made the decision after "much soul searching" and were considering their options. The move comes three months after Canada's Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal from the Amazon villagers, effectively bringing their legal action in that country to the end of the road.

Wells Fargo's analysis of Wolters Kluwer PriceRx data found that companies have raised medicine costs by 27% on average last month, with a subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd hiking the price for a generic anti-diuretic by 909%. Closely held Epic Pharma LLC came second on the list of top increases, jacking up prices on two versions of its drug by 399%. Merck & Co., Fresenius SE, Novartis AG's Sandoz, and Spectrum Pharmaceuticals Inc. were also on the list.Wells Fargo found there were more price increases in June overall compared with the previous month. Drug companies have raised the cost of 106 medicines compared to 101 in May, analyst David Maris said in a note."To us it appears now that the criticism from politicians and the President has quieted down, companies are more aggressively and broadly pursuing drug price increases again," he said.
