Abandoned steelworks looks like 'post-apocalyptic wasteland' Posted: 16 Nov 2017 08:38 AM PST An abandoned steelworks that looks like a post-apocalyptic wasteland similar to Westworld has been transformed into an artist's haven. Far from its days of producing over 250 tons of steel per day, this steelworks in Birmingham, Ala., has lain dormant for 40 years, a sad ode to its long-forgotten wonder years long. |

Power line Whitefish Energy worked on in Puerto Rico keeps failing Posted: 15 Nov 2017 07:46 AM PST It's been nearly two months since Category 4 Hurricane Maria slammed Puerto Rico, leaving behind immense devastation. On Wednesday morning, the island took another step backward, as the lights went off in San Juan once again. SEE ALSO: Google: Project Loon has provided internet access to 100,000 people in Puerto Rico Shortly after the storm, the island's government signed a controversial $300 million deal with a little-known Montana company known as Whitefish Energy to restore power to parts of the island. Yet the island continues to experience major problems with its fragile electrical grid. As of Monday morning, power had been restored to about 50 percent of the island. That's when a power line known as the Cambalache Manatee line failed, again, plunging San Juan and other cities into darkness. Confirmed: power out in Puerto Rico - Cause unknown, as of now. It just so happens, that Gov. @ricardorossello had been heralding November 15th (today) as a goal of being at 50% generation, on the 56th day after Maria. https://t.co/4ycaEfSFQS — David Begnaud (@DavidBegnaud) November 15, 2017 Se reporta falla en línea de 230KV de Cambalache a Manatí. Personal de AEE se acerca al área para identificar el problema y restablecer el 50% de generación alcanzado. CC6 — AEE (@AEEONLINE) November 15, 2017 This is the second time in a week that this particular line has failed, affecting the parts of Puerto Rico that actually had restored power. On Tuesday, the first outage was blamed on "human error." PREPA reports power out in Puerto Rico due to "failure of the Cambalache Manatee 230KV line" *This is the same line where there was failure last week-Yesterday, PREPA boss Ricardo Ramos said last weeks outage was caused by a "crane", signaling human error caused it — David Begnaud (@DavidBegnaud) November 15, 2017 It's also the line that Whitefish Energy has worked on as part of their controversial, and now canceled, contract with the island. As Mashable's own Andrew Freedman noted, the $300 million contract breaks down like so: Those are big bucks for work on a line that seems to be repeatedly failing and already under intense scrutiny. On Tuesday, officials were in the hot seat for a Congressional hearing. Documents released by the House Committee on Natural Resources showed that the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority's (PREPA) contract with Whitefish was extremely troubling, particularly the approval of the contract despite internal calls of concern. Five dead in California shooting spree that ended at school Posted: 14 Nov 2017 01:28 PM PST Five people died in a shooting spree on Tuesday that ended at a school in a remote area of rural Northern California . Law enforcement officers shot dead the gunman after a series of shootings at seven or more locations, according to local newspaper the Record Searchlight. The spree began at a home and ended at Rancho Tehama School near the town of Corning. The shooter was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns, Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston told local media. He said a number of students were airlifted for medical care after gunfire at the school but the authorities did not know what had motivated the shooter. Shots were fired at the school and some people were injured at the campus but no students or staff members died, Corning Union Elementary School District administrative assistant Jeanine Quist said. The area is about 120 miles (190 km) north of Sacramento. California Governor Jerry Brown said in a statement he and his wife were "saddened to hear about today's violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren". "We offer our condolences to the families who lost loved ones and unite with all Californians in grief," he said. Countries with more guns have more mass shootings A parent, Coy Ferreira, said he was dropping off his daughter when he heard gunshots. "One of the teachers came running out of the building and told us to all run inside because there was a shooter coming," he told television station KRCR. "So we all hurried up and ran and told the students to get in the classrooms." Once inside a classroom, Ferreira said he heard gunfire for over 20 minutes and a student in the room was struck. The shooter's name has not yet been released. |

Israel PM offers quake aid to arch foe Iran Posted: 15 Nov 2017 07:08 AM PST Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has offered aid to victims of the deadly earthquake in Iran, insisting enmity between the two governments does not prevent humanitarian sympathy. The offer was made in a video conference with the Jewish Federations of North America. It comes as many of the tens of thousands left homeless by the quake have vented anger at the Islamic regime for what they say has been the slow response of the charitable foundations set up after the revolution of 1979. |

Newtown families seek to hold gun maker accountable in Connecticut court Posted: 14 Nov 2017 10:59 AM PST By Tina Bellon HARTFORD, Conn. (Reuters) - A lawyer for families who lost loved ones in the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting told Connecticut's highest court on Tuesday that Remington Outdoor Co [FREDM.UL] should be held responsible because its military-themed marketing was designed to appeal to young men like killer Adam Lanza. "They knew they were hitting their mark and Lanza was responding to their marketing," said lawyer Joshua Koskoff Lanza, 20, used a Remington AR-15 Bushmaster rifle, a semi-automatic civilian version of the U.S. military's M-16, to kill 20 school children between the ages of 6 and 7, as well as six adult staff members, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on Dec. 14, 2012. Following the conclusion Tuesday's arguments, the Connecticut Supreme Court will now decide whether the families of nine of the victims and one survivor can proceed with a trial seeking to hold Remington, along with a gun wholesaler and local retailer, responsible for the carnage based on its marketing. |
