Swiss admit drone test bungle in Golan Heights Posted: 02 Nov 2017 03:25 AM PDT Switzerland's defense ministry has admitted sending staff to test reconnaissance drones in contested land held by Israel - an embarrassing blow for the neutral European country's status as an honest broker in the Middle East. Swiss officials visited an airfield in the Golan Heights region on three occasions in 2012, 2013 and 2015 to monitor tests of the Israeli-built Hermes 900 aircraft that they are buying for $265 million. The visits, which lasted several days, took place in an area which Switzerland does not recognize as being part of Israel, which took the land from Syria following a 1967 war. |

Colorado shooting: Three killed at Walmart in Thornton as customers flee in panic Posted: 01 Nov 2017 10:53 PM PDT Two men and a woman were killed in a shooting inside a suburban Denver Walmart on Wednesday night that forced customers to either hide or flee. Thornton police reported "multiple parties down" and advised people to stay away from the area as dozens of police cruisers and emergency vehicles raced to the scene. The men died at the Colorado store, and the woman died at a hospital. Police spokesman Victor Avila said a man nonchalantly entered the store and fired a handgun into a group of people before fleeing in a car. No one has been arrested. "This is a very heinous act," Avila said. "We don't know exactly what the motive of the person was, but it was certainly a terrible act." The spokesman said there is currently no indication that the shooting was an act of terror. Denver Walmart shooting map Reports of shots fired came shortly before 6:30 p.m. local time, a police spokesman told local 9NEWS in Denver. An hour after the incident, the situation, the nature of the incident or status of the threat remained unclear, he said. He said customers started screaming and running for the exits. "I was scared. I feared for my life," said Stephens, who has lived in Thornton for 20 years. Meanwhile, Brandon Bonney said he received a call from his brother, who was inside the store. "Bro, I'm inside Walmart, and there's a shooting here," Bonney said his brother told him. Bonney told his brother to silence his phone, stay calm and "just get somewhere and hide," The Post reported. Investigators have not released any details about the circumstances of the shooting or the condition of the injured woman. "Like six pops, everyone got down, everyone started screaming." Factbox: What is in Republican tax bill? Here is the framework Posted: 01 Nov 2017 04:47 PM PDT (Reuters) - Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are due to release tax legislation on Thursday calling for slashing taxes on corporations, repealing some taxes paid primarily by the wealthy and adjusting other taxes on families and individuals. As questions about the final shape of the bill swirl around Washington, the following is a look at the basic features of the plan released in September, though changes are expected: CORPORATE TAXES * Reduce the U.S. corporate income tax rate to 20 percent from a current statutory 35 percent. * Eliminate the corporate alternative minimum tax. |

Teva shares topple on profit warning, uncertain future Posted: 02 Nov 2017 10:57 AM PDT By Steven Scheer and Ari Rabinovitch JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Teva Pharmaceutical Industries , the world's biggest generic medicine maker, came under investor and market pressure on Thursday after saying it would miss 2017 profit forecasts. Shares in the Israeli-based company dropped by as much as 20 percent after it issued the profit warning, which it said was due to falling prices of generics in the U.S. market and weakening sales of its multiple sclerosis drug Copaxone, which fell 7 percent in the third quarter in the United States. Investors are pushing Teva, which is battling narrowing profit margins, a nearly $35 billion debt burden that could lead to a credit rating downgrade, for clarity on its future. |

Exclusive: Trump boosts disaster aid for Puerto Rico rebuild Posted: 02 Nov 2017 04:53 PM PDT By Roberta Rampton WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday agreed to expand the use of disaster aid to help rebuild Puerto Rico's power grid and other infrastructure wrecked by Hurricane Maria, the White House said. In a unique agreement recognizing both the massive devastation on the island and its dire financial problems, aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for infrastructure projects will be released in a faster, more flexible way than is typical after disasters, a senior White House official told Reuters. |
World's priciest whisky bought by Chinese millionaire revealed to be fake Posted: 02 Nov 2017 05:48 AM PDT When Chinese millionaire, Zhang Wei, splashed out £7,600 on the world's most expensive whisky shot in a Swiss bar, he boasted to his fans that it was the same age as his great, great grandmother would have been – 139 years old. Unfortunately for the martial arts fantasy writer, the headlines generated not only admiration, but suspicion by experts who doubted the authenticity of the spirit's true provenance when they spotted discrepancies in the bottle's cork and label. An analysis from Scottish experts has now confirmed that Mr Zhang was unwittingly duped into buying a fake dram, and the Waldhaus am See hotel in St Moritz has recently flown its manager, Sandro Bernasconi, to China to reimburse him, reported the BBC. Analysis has shown the whisky was not as advertised Credit: David Cheskin/PA Wire The whisky had been poured from an unopened bottle labelled as an 1878 Macallan single malt, and Mr Zhang's shot is believed to have been the largest sum ever paid for a poured dram of Scotch. Had the bottle been genuine, it would have been worth £227,000. When doubts emerged about its provenance, the hotel sent the whisky to specialists in Dunfermline who carried out carbon dating tests that showed it was probably made between 1970 and 1972. Further lab tests revealed it was probably a blended a Scotch and not a single malt. Mr Bernasconi flew to China to break the bad news to Mr Zhang and to pay him back but he said the author was not angry. "He thanked me very much for the hotel's honesty," he told the BBC. |

Police identified the suspect in the latest shooting as 47-year-old Scott Ostrem, and said on Twitter he had been taken into custody. |
