Injured defector's parasites and diet hint at hard life in N.Korea Posted: 17 Nov 2017 04:13 AM PST Parasitic worms found in a North Korean soldier, critically injured during a desperate defection, highlight nutrition and hygiene problems that experts say have plagued the isolated country for decades. At a briefing on Wednesday, lead surgeon Lee Cook-jong displayed photos showing dozens of flesh-coloured parasites - including one 27 cm (10.6 in) long - removed from the wounded soldier's digestive tract during a series of surgeries to save his life. The parasites, along with kernels of corn in his stomach, may confirm what many experts and previous defectors have described about the food and hygiene situation for many North Koreans. |

School cancels Muslim speaker after teacher organising presentation receives threats Posted: 16 Nov 2017 06:03 PM PST A teacher at Northeastern Middle School in Bristol, Connecticut, had invited a local Muslim woman to speak about her faith and sent a note to parents informing them of the event. The letter, which was posted online, introduced the speaker as a New York City native who resided in Connecticut and had founded an organisation devoted to "empowerment of Muslim women". In a statement to NBC, Bristol Public Schools superintendent Susan Kalt Moreau said despite the cancellation "there was an outpouring of support for bringing a speaker in to support our curriculum which includes religions of the world". |

Freeport evacuating Indonesian mine worker families after shootings Posted: 18 Nov 2017 04:43 AM PST U.S. miner Freeport-McMoRan Inc is evacuating spouses and children of workers from its giant Indonesian copper mine after a string of shootings in the area raised security concerns. The move follows efforts by Indonesian authorities on Friday to evacuate villages near Freeport's Grasberg mine in the eastern province of Papua that authorities said had been occupied by armed separatists. Freeport has asked family and household members of its employees to prepare over the weekend for a temporary relocation from the mining town of Tembagapura, about 10 km (6.2 miles) from Grasberg, company sources said. |

How the U.S. Military Could Soon Have a New Way to Crush North Korea's ICBMs Posted: 17 Nov 2017 04:28 AM PST A US military upgraded Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle, or EKV, a kinetic-force weapon that slams into its targets, destroyed an intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time during a Missile Defense Agency test of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system several months ago. The Missile Defense Agency's first-ever successful intercept of an ICBM target using a Ground-based Midcourse Defense system, using the kinetic force of an Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV) to destroy the target, is paving the way toward advanced future kill vehicles able to discern and attack multiple approaching threats, industry and Pentagon officials said. |
Hariri Paris trip is 'start of solution': Lebanon president Posted: 16 Nov 2017 10:24 AM PST Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri's decision to accept an invitation to Paris is the "start of a solution" to the crisis sparked by his resignation in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon's president said Thursday. Hariri has been in Riyadh since announcing his shock resignation from there on November 4, and Lebanon's President Michel Aoun on Wednesday accused Saudi authorities of "detaining" the premier. "We hope that the crisis is over and Hariri's acceptance of the invitation to go to France is the start of a solution," Aoun said on the official presidential Twitter account. |

China's Belt and Road Initiative Is Stoking Tensions with India Posted: 16 Nov 2017 06:07 PM PST If Beijing maintains its current approach of BRI implementation, it will push New Delhi to balance against increasing Chinese power. The Chinese Communist Party enshrined President Xi Jinping's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) into its constitution at the 19th National Congress in October. This move signaled the depth of the Chinese commitment to its massive infrastructure investment plan and ostensibly prompted last week's quadrilateral meeting between senior officials from the United States, Japan, India, and Australia on the future of a "free and open Indo-Pacific." India's participation in the dialogue is yet another signal that China's method of implementing the BRI is driving a wedge between these neighbors and creating an opportunity for the United States to strengthen its ties with New Delhi. |
Erdogan says Turkey must clear Syria's Afrin of YPG militia Posted: 17 Nov 2017 03:09 AM PST President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that Turkey needed to clear the Afrin region of northwest Syria of Kurdish YPG militia fighters, who have been in the forefront of the battle there against Islamic State insurgents. Erdogan, speaking in Ankara to officials from the ruling AK Party, also expressed disappointment with the United States, which backs the YPG. Ankara views the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought a decades-long insurgency in Turkey and is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union. |

US to sell Patriot missile system to Poland Posted: 17 Nov 2017 02:37 PM PST The US State Department said Friday it had approved the sale of a Patriot anti-missile system to NATO ally Poland, a move likely to irk Russia. The State Department said it had notified Congress on November 14 of its approval of the deal, which is worth up to $10.5 billion, and would mark the first time Poland has bought the sophisticated system. "A secure Europe capable of deterring air and missile threats and other forms of aggression promotes peace and stability within NATO and on the European continent," officials said in a statement. |

Trump starts paying his own legal bills on Russia probe -attorneys Posted: 17 Nov 2017 01:23 PM PST By Karen Freifeld and Ginger Gibson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump has begun paying his own legal bills related to the Russia investigation and will no longer cover the costs using political donations to his reelection campaign or the Republican Party, his attorneys confirmed on Friday. Trump defense lawyer John Dowd said that following payments by the Republican National Committee (RNC), the president began paying the bills and now wants to make the party "even." The expenses cover personal lawyers representing Trump before special prosecutor Robert Mueller's probe of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in last year's election, and whether Trump may have obstructed justice by firing Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey, among other actions. Moscow has denied meddling in the election, and Trump has denied any collusion or obstruction. |
