People are sending wire hangers to a senator who they think is too soft on protecting abortion rights

Posted: 29 Jun 2018 01:21 PM PDT

People are sending wire hangers to a senator who they think is too soft on protecting abortion rightsPeople are sending a warning to a senator whose stance on protecting abortion rights isn't strong enough for them. On Wednesday, after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement, Republican Senator Susan Collins said she views Roe v. Wade — the ruling that ensures nation-wide abortion access — as "settled law."  "It's clearly precedent," she said on Wednesday when asked about her stance on protecting abortion laws. "I always look for judges who respect precedent." SEE ALSO: After Kennedy's retirement, are we entering 'Handmaid's Tale' territory? But on Thursday, her commitment to upholding Roe v. Wade seemed shaky. Her spokeswoman Annie Clark told the Portland Press Herald that Collins "always looks at their judicial temperament" and "respect for precedent" when evaluating judges, and then clarified that the senator "does not apply ideological litmus tests" to nominees.  Many viewed this as Clark implying that even though Collins supports "precedent," she wouldn't outright oppose nominees who were vocally against access to abortions.  That wasn't a strong enough stance for some Twitter users, who rallied together to mail clothes hangers to Collins' offices in Maine and Washington, D.C. as a dark reminder of the gruesome ways women sometimes dealt with unwanted pregnancies before abortion was legal.  Collins's gift to women: pic.twitter.com/YkgHoWHOTw — June Casagrande (@JuneCasagrande) June 29, 2018 The trend seems to have started with author and podcaster June Casagrande, who responded to a tweet condemning Collins' statement with a photo of a hanger. Another Twitter user commented, "Shower these on [Collins'] doorstep." "It's already begun," Casagrande responded, sharing a screenshot of an Amazon order for wire hangers shipped to the senator's D.C. office. It's already begun. pic.twitter.com/Rr2BE1JZH9 — June Casagrande (@JuneCasagrande) June 29, 2018 Others jumped in on the #HangersForCollins trend to make a statement. Thanks for the idea! pic.twitter.com/pOdMtbVLqi — Jennifer Resists (@jennwheeler) June 29, 2018 Hey maine, why don't we all send letters to @SenatorCollins ...glued to coat hangers. As Casagrande pointed out, their monetary contributions to pro-choice organizations could make a difference. It makes me so grateful to see people in Canada caring about Americans in these perilous times! I'm not really set up to create that kind of effort. But I think there's no better solution than what you (and I) are already doing: contributing to pro-choice orgs. — June Casagrande (@JuneCasagrande) June 29, 2018 Since news broke of Kennedy's retirement, people in the U.S. have worried over whether pro-choice rights will remain protected, should President Donald Trump nominate a candidate that wants to overturn the ruling. Kennedy co-authored the opinion in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, a landmark 1992 case that guaranteed a continued right to abortion for women.  Collins and Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who are both Republicans, are potential swing votes on Trump's Supreme Court pick. Together, they can reject a nominee who might vote in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade. It remains to be seen whether #HangersForCollins will sway their opinion. Bali volcano erupts: Thousands of tourists stranded as ash closes airport

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 09:58 PM PDT

Bali volcano erupts: Thousands of tourists stranded as ash closes airportThe Indonesian tourist island of Bali closed its international airport on Friday, stranding thousands of travellers, as the Mount Agung volcano gushed an 8,200-feet column of ash and smoke. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said nearly 450 flights were cancelled, affecting some 75,000 people. The regional Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Darwin, Australia, said winds would carry the ash southwest toward Java, Indonesia's most densely populated island. Volcanic ash is a potentially deadly threat to aircraft that can cause engines to "flame out." The volcano began belching ash and smoke on Thursday and several airlines cancelled inbound and outbound flights scheduled for the evening. "We hadn't a place to stay for the night so we had to find something else, just took a taxi and stayed at a random hostel," said a stranded German backpacker who identified herself as Louisa. "We hoped we could leave this morning, but the airport is closed," she said. Mount Agung - Bali Two small airports, at Banyuwangi and Jember in eastern Java, also closed because of the ash threat. Agung's alert level has not been raised and an exclusion zone around the crater remains at 2.5 miles. The disaster agency said the closure of Bali's airport was in effect until 7 pm.  Australia's national airline Qantas said in a statement that it's "currently not safe" to operate Bali flights. A flight information board shows cancelled flights at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali Credit: AP It said it was monitoring advice from the ash advisory centre and its own pilots and meteorologists would decide when flights can resume. Australian visitor Rod Bird came early to the airport only to be told his flight back to Perth had been cancelled for the second time. An earlier flight on AirAsia was called off before the airport was shuttered early Friday morning. "They told us the volcano is going off so they rebooked us for this morning and we got here at 5:00 am only to be turned away again. So we've had two cancelled flights," Bird told AFP. "Well it's Bali, these things happen and we are fine with it. We just miss the kids," he added. Tourists rest as Ngurah Rai International Airport is closed due to the eruption of Mount Agung in Bali Credit: AP The volcano, about 45 miles northeast of Bali's tourist hotspot of Kuta, last had a major eruption in 1963, killing about 1,100 people. It had a dramatic increase in activity last year, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, but had quietened by early this year. Authorities lowered its alert status from the highest level in February. Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 250 million people, sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Government seismologists monitor more than 120 active volcanoes.

Angela Merkel warns migration challenge could 'determine Europe's destiny'

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 11:32 AM PDT

Angela Merkel warns migration challenge could 'determine Europe's destiny'The European Union embraced a new hardline agenda to defend its borders against illegal migration last night as Angela Merkel warned that the fate of the bloc depended on addressing the three-year crisis over migration. Europe's growing crop of populist leaders claimed victory for their "Fortress Europe" agenda which saw the European Council summit in Brussels putting deterrence and the protection of EU borders at the forefront of its migration policy. "Europe has many challenges but migration could end up determining Europe's destiny," Mrs Merkel told the German parliament before the summit, with her own political future hanging in the balance following a rebellion against her softer migration policies by her Bavarian coalition partners. The draft summit conclusions showed the German leader's long-standing calls for an inclusive approach to migration playing second fiddle to the need to secure Europe's borders and process illegal migrants off-shore so they could be returned to their countries of origin. In a sign of the high stakes at the table Italy took the highly unusual step of blocking the entire summit conclusions in order to extract concessions on migration. The move forced Jean-Claude Juncker the EU Commission president to cancel a planned press conference.  Senior Brussels sources said that Italy was demanding that the EU agreed that every migrant arriving in Italy was "arriving in Europe" in a bid to force other EU states to share the burden of migration.  Italy was also demanding urgent reforms to the Dublin regulation and a European wide commitment to rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean.  "We're willing to work through the night to get this," said an Italian source involved in the talks.  Emmanuel Macron the Fench President posted a photograph on Twitter of him and his Italian counterpart working on drafts of the conclusions as all sides worked to broker a late-night compromise.  Sebastian Kurz, the conservative Austrian chancellor who is in coalition with the far-right Freedom Party, said the shift to a harder line was a victory for those states who have argued that the EU's soft approach is creating 'pull factors' for migration.   Merkel's migration tensions | Read more "It seems as if today we will manage a shift in migration policy," he said, adding that being rescued in the Mediterranean "must not automatically become a ticket" to central Europe. "That's important because we have asked for a systemic change for years. For years we have demanded reductions in the number of people coming to Europe illegally. I think that is possible today." Viktor Orban, the Hungarian prime minister who put up fences on Hungary's border with Serbia in 2015 after Mrs Merkel threw open Germany's border, said the change was a victory for the concerns of Europe's voters. "The main issue is not migration, the issue is democracy in Europe ... it is about what the people believe, what should be done," he said before claiming the people wanted migrants to be sent back to where they came from. He added that the move heralded the start of a "new period when we try to reconstruct the European democracy." Mr Orban's claims of a victory for 'democracy' will send shudders through liberal Europe which believes that the Hungarian leader is using the consensus for a harder line over migration as a Trojan horse for a broader illiberal agenda. Donald Tusk, the European Council president, warned on the eve of the summit that failure to address the migration question risked handing ammunition to populists and those with "a tendency towards overt authoritarianism" - which was widely taken as a reference to the likes of Mr Orban. But Mr Tusk said that the EU's measures - which include beefing up Europe's border force to 10,000, forging return deals with African states and investigating setting up so-called hotspot camps in north Africa - were necessary to avoid something worse. "Some may think I am too tough in my proposals on migration. But trust me, if we don't agree on them, then you will see some really tough proposals from some really tough guys," he said. Emmanuel Macron, the French president, said that the measures were not designed to put an the end to the idea of 'European solutions' to migration pressures, but to modernise them and enable them to work better. "We all face a simple choice: do we want national solutions or do we believe in European solutions and cooperation? For my part, I will defend European solutions, in cooperation, in the European Union and under Schengen," he said Italy's new populist government withheld judgement on the proposals, after a month in which it has refused permission for NGO migrant rescue ships to dock at its ports and demanded EU states share the burden of the 600,000 migrants that have arrived in the last two years. Guiseppe Conte, the Italian prime minister, welcomed the proposals and pledges to do more to help Italy, but made clear that his government - which has already catalysed the debate - would continue to push for real outcomes. "We hope these words will be translated into action," he said. "Italy no longer has a need for words and statements, we need concrete acts."

Five-metre great white shark spotted off Majorca in first confirmed sighting in decadesAgreat white shark has been spotted in a marine park in Spain's Balearic Islands, in the first confirmed sighting of the predator in Spanish waters for more than four decades. The five-metre (16.4 ft) shark was tracked for more than an hour by an international conservation team in the Cabrera Archipelago National Park, a reserve six miles off the southern coast of Majorca.  The team from Alnitak, a Spanish conservation project with researchers from several European countries including the United Kingdom, published an image of the shark following the "historic sighting" on Thursday. The organisation said it would be releasing more footage and images later on Friday. Shark sighting Ten researchers, including British woman Georgina Stevens, were on board Alnitak's vessel conducting data collection and monitoring when the shark was sighted, the group said.  While there have been unconfirmed sightings and rumours of great white sharks in Spanish waters over the years, this is believed to be the first confirmed incident since 1976, when a Majorca fisherman caught a specimen measuring more than six metres.  The five-metre (16.4 ft) shark was tracked for more than an hour by an international conservation team in the Cabrera Archipelago National Park Credit: Beat vNi In 2006, a Spanish documentary film said that 27 great whites had been caught by fisherman in the Balearics between 1920 and 1976. But since then, the species had all but disappeared. Alnitak said that the presence of great white sharks in Spanish waters was the subject of a "constant rumour", supported by historic photographs and even local place names in the Balearic Islands and along Mediterranean coastline of mainland Spain. WE'RE TRYING.After a prolonged period of silence, former President Barack Obama spoke at a Democratic National Committee Fundraiser in California last night and offered a few words of wisdom. "You are right to be concerned," Obama said. As Politico reported, he cautioning the crowd: "Do not wait for the perfect message, don't wait to feel a tingle in your spine because you're expecting politicians to be so inspiring and poetic and moving that somehow, 'OK, I'll get off my couch after all and go spend the 15-20 minutes it takes for me to vote." SEE ALSO: Barack Obama finally breaks his silence on immigration controversy, and it's kind of a let down Obama told donors and organizers in the crowd to focus their energy on one emotion — hope. "All these people that are out here kvetching and wringing their hands and stressed and anxious and constantly watching cable TV and howling at the moon, 'What are we going to do?,' their hair's falling out, they can't sleep," Obama said. "The majority of the American people prefer a story of hope. A majority of the American people prefer a country that comes together rather than being divided. The majority of the country doesn't want to see a dog-eat-dog world where everybody is angry all the time." Thanks, Obama? Though far easier said than done. You can read more of his comments here. Five dead in India after plane crashes and bursts into flames in busy Mumbai district

Five dead in India after plane crashes and bursts into flames in busy Mumbai districtA small plane crashed into a construction site in a densely populated part of India's financial capital Mumbai on Thursday, killing five people including one on the ground, officials said. Images broadcast on Indian news channels showed flames and black smoke billowing from the area, which sits right next to several high-rise residential towers. There were four people on the 12-seater aircraft, disaster management officials said, with witnesses reporting hearing a loud blast as it smashed into a half-built structure. "There was a huge explosion and the adjacent tree caught fire and the fire spilled on the streets," a man was quoted as saying on the NDTV news channel. "Initially we assumed an electric box in the under-construction building must have caught fire but when we checked out the spot, we found the charred body of a man who apparently was on bike when the plane crashed," he added. A woman, who was also not named, reported hearing three loud explosions and described seeing a "major fire". Video footage posted online showed bright orange flames licking the side of a building next to a construction site. The plane hit an open area at a construction site for a multistory building Credit: AP Other images shot after the fire was put out showed firemen sifting through the twisted wreckage of the twin-prop plane as crowds looked on. The white tailfin seemed to be the only recognisable part of the aircraft not consumed in the blaze. India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the plane was a turbo-prop King Air C-90 and had been on a test flight from the nearby Juhu airstrip. "There were two pilots and two aircraft maintenance engineers on board. All on board (the) aircraft along with one person on ground are dead," the DGCA statement read. A medical officer at Rajawadi hospital, where the victims were taken, said the dead included three men and two women. "There bodies were completely charred due to the fire," she told AFP, adding that two injured had also been admitted and were in a stable condition. Rescuers stand amid the wreckage of a private chartered plane that crashed in Ghatkopar area, Mumbai Credit: Rajanish Kakade/AP It was not raining at the time of the accident and weather did not appear to have been a factor in the crash. DGCA said it was sending a team to investigate the cause, adding that the aircraft was owned by a private operator who had purchased it from the Uttar Pradesh state government. P Rahangdale, Mumbai's chief fire officer, said several fire engines had rushed to the spot. India's National Disaster Response Force said it was also sending a team to make sure no there were no injured trapped under any rubble at the crash site. Former Indian Aviation Minister Praful Patel tweeted his condolences and praised the pilot for the guiding the plane into an open area. "Salute to the pilot who showed presence of mind to avoid a big mishap, saving many lives at the cost of her own life," he wrote. There have been several crashes involving small planes in India in recent years. In 2015 a light aircraft belonging to India's paramilitary border force crashed after taking off from New Delhi airport, killing 10 people on board. Ten people were killed in 2011 after an air ambulance crashed into a residential area in Faridabad, near the capital. Seven people on board and three on the ground were killed. The last deadly air crash involving a commercial plane happened in 2010 when an Air India Boeing 737-800 over shot the runway while landing at Mangalore airport in southern India. At least 158 passengers were killed and nearly a dozen others survived the crash.

4 Things Worth Grilling That Aren't MeatLast fall, my family went 10 weeks without an oven or stovetop, thanks to our kitchen renovation. While the challenge had me (finally) getting to know every plug-in appliance my husband and I had listed on our wedding registry more than 10 years ago, it also forced me to push the limits of our backyard gas grill. Before the renovation, we pretty much only used it to cook marinated chicken breasts, burgers, corn or the occasional pile of peppers. But during the renovation, my family began thinking of this appliance's full potential as a heat source in lieu of our oven and stovetop. ...

UK's Prince William visits Jerusalem holy sites, great-grandmother's tomb

UK's Prince William visits Jerusalem holy sites, great-grandmother's tombBy Jeffrey Heller JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Britain's Prince William toured Jerusalem's most sacred and sensitive sites on Thursday, wrapping up a politically delicate visit that both Palestinians and Israelis, locked in a lengthy conflict, were able to embrace. Assuring Palestinians they had not been forgotten and ending what Israelis had seen as an undeclared British boycott of official visits to their country by the royal family, William made no evident missteps in following an itinerary carefully scripted for balance. Billed as non-political, the four-day tour of Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territories was an opportunity to show goodwill and voice hopes for peace in areas Britain ruled from 1917 to 1948, the year of Israel's creation.

Elon Musk in 'absurd' dispute with Colorado artist over use of flatulating unicorn image

Elon Musk in 'absurd' dispute with Colorado artist over use of flatulating unicorn image  Elon Musk, the South African-born entrepreneur with ambitious plans to colonise Mars, has become embroiled in an 'absurd' dispute over his company's use of a flatulating unicorn image he is accused of "ripping off". The 47-year-old multi-billionaire first shared the unicorn image, created by Colorado artist Tom Edwards, with his 22 million Twitter followers in February last year. Edwards, who runs his own art pottery business, produced the unicorn mug design in 2010, explaining: "I figure anything with rainbows and unicorns has to be a hit!" It quickly became one of his best-selling items and years later the colourful piece of pottery would grab the attention of Musk, who tweeted an image declaring: "Maybe my favourite mug ever." Musk used a copy of the image in March 2017 to promote a hidden "sketch pad" feature in Tesla vehicles and then again in a Christmas card to owners of the electric cars later that year. Made today on Tesla sketch pad pic.twitter.com/Z8dFP2NN41— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 30, 2017 While Edwards was initially delighted with the boost in sales of his unicorn mugs as a result of Musk's promotion, The Guardian reports he has now accused the SpaceX CEO of using the image without his permission in Tesla's operating system. Rainbows, unicorns and electric cars pic.twitter.com/oGHkVUmpdi— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 4, 2017 Maybe my favorite mug ever— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 4, 2017 The artist told westword.com: "I want to get paid for my artwork … I'd like for them [Tesla] to contact my lawyer and start the process for what this unicorn is worth." Edwards' daughter Robin, who performs under the stage name Lisa Prank, posted on Twitter that Musk had "ripped off my dad's art!" Was actually someone else's drawing of a unicorn on hidden Tesla sketch pad app & we gained no financial benefit. Have asked my team to use a diff example going forward. He can sue for money if he wants, but that's kinda lame. If anything, this attention increased his mug sales.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 27, 2018 "Your company has been using his creative property for a year without credit or compensation - don't you think artists deserve to be paid for their work? Maybe you can respond to the letter his lawyer sent you & you guys can work something out," she wrote to Musk. "It's a direct copy of his work. And every element that goes into building the Tesla financially benefits you. It was also sent out in Tesla Christmas promotional material. You used it to add to your brand." Musk responded it would be "kinda lame" if Edwards sued him over the use of the image and suggested the artist should be grateful for the promotion. He added it was "chosen randomly" by his software team "as a joke (they didn't tell me in advance) as an example of the hidden feature". He added: "We can change it to something else if your Dad wants." "[It] was actually someone else's drawing of a unicorn on hidden Tesla sketch pad app & we gained no financial benefit," he clarified. "Have asked my team to use a diff example going forward. He can sue for money if he wants, but that's kinda lame. If anything, this attention increased his mug sales." SpaceX founder Elon Musk Credit: Reuters  In another reply he wrote: "Lisa, I popularised your Dad's mug for free, he made thousands of dollars as a result & now he wants more money because someone else's drawing of that mug was used as a sketch pad example in a *hidden* feature. How much money does your Dad want for this terrible transgression?" Replying to criticism over the row, he added: "I offered to pay him twice for something we don't even want." "Nothing is more absurd than reality!" he continued in another post. "This silly drawing that was just added as a silly example for our sketchpad Easter egg has bothered me more than anything today. I definitely care about artists getting compensated. It would be unfair not to do so." In response to the controversy, Edwards has launched a "Tesla stole my unicorn" mug, platter and celadon wine sipper. Tesla has been contacted for a comment.
