Netanyahu warns Merkel of new refugee crisis sparked by Iran

Netanyahu warns Merkel of new refugee crisis sparked by IranIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned German Chancellor Angela Merkel Monday that Iranian meddling in the Middle East could touch off massive new refugee flows to Europe, as they clashed about the future of the nuclear deal with Tehran. At the start of a three-day European tour dominated by strategic differences on Iran, Netanyahu charged that Tehran has been able to bankroll a growing military presence in countries such as Syria and Yemen because sanctions had been lifted in exchange for its halt in nuclear enrichment activities. Iran wants to "basically conduct a religious campaign in largely Sunni Syria but try to convert Sunnis," he said at a joint press conference with Merkel.

Israel strikes Hamas military targets and naval forces in Gaza as rocket fire breaks calm

Posted: 03 Jun 2018 06:38 AM PDT

Israel strikes Hamas military targets and naval forces in Gaza as rocket fire breaks calmIsraeli aircraft pounded over a dozen militant targets in Gaza, the army said Sunday, after Palestinian projectile fire shattered a ceasefire reached just days ago after the worst flare-up since a 2014 war. The latest escalation came hours after thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral of a young female volunteer medic killed by Israeli fire on Gaza's border. In a first wave of air strikes, Israeli "fighter jets targeted 10 terror sites in three military compounds belonging to the Hamas terror organisation in the Gaza Strip," the army said in a statement early Sunday. "Among the targets were two Hamas munition manufacturing and storage sites and a military compound," the army said. The strikes came in retaliation for rockets fired at Israel, as well as "various terror activities approved and orchestrated by the Hamas terror organisation over the weekend," the army said. A few hours later aircraft shot at "five terror targets at a military compound belonging to the Hamas terror organisation's naval force in the northern Gaza Strip," the army said in a separate statement. There were no reports of casualties in Gaza. On Saturday evening, militants in the Palestinian enclave fired two projectiles at southern Israel, where air raid sirens sent residents to bomb shelters. Early Sunday, four more projectiles were separately launched at Israel. Three were intercepted, the army said, with the fourth apparently hitting an open field. No group in Gaza claimed responsibility for the projectile attacks, which came shortly after the Saturday funeral of Razan al-Najjar, 21, a volunteer with the Gaza health ministry, who was fatally shot in the chest near Khan Yunis on Friday. Ambulances and medical crews attended the funeral, where Najjar's father held the blood-stained white medics' jacket she wore when she was shot, as mourners called for revenge. Gazans have since March 30 staged border protests demanding the return of Palestinians to land they fled or were expelled from during the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation, now inside the Jewish state. The demonstrations and violence peaked on May 14 when at least 61 Palestinians were killed in clashes as tens of thousands of Gazans protested the US transfer of its embassy in Israel to the disputed city of Jerusalem the same day. On Sunday, Gaza health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra announced the death of Mohammad Hamada, 30, who was wounded on May 14. Hamada's death brings the toll of Gazans killed by Israeli fire since the end of March to 124. Low-level demonstrations have continued since.

Lazy cooks who use ready-made sauces are more likely to get cancer

Posted: 03 Jun 2018 11:24 PM PDT

Lazy cooks who use ready-made sauces are more likely to get cancerĀ Lazy cooks are nearly three times more likely to develop aggressive breast cancer compared to those who eat healthily, a new study suggests. Researchers say foods which cause inflammation may be behind the increased risk and have drawn up a list of products linked to the disease. Ready-made sauces such as those used in curry and pasta dishes, as well as industrially produced bakery goods like bread and pies, are all named. They are believed to increase the risk of cancer by damaging DNA. Presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting in Chicago, the study found women who ate the most inflammatory foods were 39 per cent more likely to develop any form of breast cancer than those who ate the least. They were also 2.72 times more likely to develop the more aggressive and hard to treat triple-negative type. Professor Adela Castello, who led the study at Instituto du Salud Carlos III in Spain, said only women who eat large amounts of unhealthy were at significant risk. She added: "Our advice is not get obsessed. Eating processed meat, fast foods or sweets once or twice a week probably won't hurt you. "The general advice for healthy dietary habits also serves for cancer prevention. "Eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains daily; fish, legumes and nuts three or four times a week; and red meats once or twice per week. "Avoid as much as possible processed meats, convenience and fast food, industrial bakery, sweets, sugared drinks and high-fat dairy products. "And use olive oil as the main dietary fat for cooking and dressing. Avoiding alcohol consumption is also recommended." The study examined nearly 2,000 women across 23 hospitals and compared cancer outcomes to dietary intake. Dr Emma Pennery said: It's true that eating a healthy balanced diet is the best things you can do for your health, and it's within our reach to make simple food switches."

BMW partially reveals all-new Z4 roadster

Posted: 04 Jun 2018 02:27 AM PDT

BMW partially reveals all-new Z4 roadsterRight now might not seem like the best time in the motor industry to unveil a new model that isn't some sort of SUV, but that isn't stopping BMW as the Bavarian automaker has partially revealed its all-new version of the Z4. In what is a slightly unusual move, BMW has allowed the media the chance to test drive the new roadster in prototype form and issued an extensive album of images, but the exterior and the dashboard have remained camouflaged. Part of the reason for exposing the prototype to such scrutiny could be as much to do with the old Z4 as the new one.
