Space Force: Donald Trump's announcement of sixth branch of the armed forces 'surprised the Pentagon' Posted: 22 Jun 2018 11:20 AM PDT President Donald Trump's announcement on Monday of a sixth branch of the armed services – the "space force" – was a surprise proposal issued after months of frustration at Pentagon scepticism, it has been claimed. Mr Trump on Monday announced: "I'm hereby directing the department of defense and Pentagon to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a space force as the sixth branch of the armed forces." He added: "That's a big statement." He seized on the idea a few days later, whipping a crowd in Minnesota into a frenzy of chanting: "Space force! Space force!" Yet, according to the Wall Street Journal, the week before his announcement senior commanders from the air force gathered for a strategy session in Dayton, Ohio, but had no idea of the planned announcement. Donald Trump, signing a space policy directive at the White House in December Credit: Reuters The Pentagon has not created a new service since the air force was begun in 1947. Mr Trump first raised the idea in March, and then again in May. Last year a bill to include provisions in a defence spending bill were removed, amid opposition from senators and the armed forces. James Mattis, the defense secretary, wrote in a 2017 letter to the senate armed services committee: "I oppose the creation of a new military service and additional organisational layers at a time when we are focused on reducing overhead and integrating joint warfighting functions." But following Mr Trump's announcement on Monday, he took a more conciliatory line. "It's going to require legislation and a lot of detailed planning and we've not yet begun," he told reporters at the Pentagon on Thursday. "I mean, we've clearly got to start the process." The Pentagon's stance also shifted, with a senior military official saying in response: "The Joint Staff will work closely with the Office of the Secretary of Defense, other DoD stakeholders and the Congress to implement the president's guidance."

U.S. Supreme Court restricts police on cellphone location data Posted: 22 Jun 2018 11:14 AM PDT The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday imposed limits on the ability of police to obtain cellphone data pinpointing the past location of criminal suspects in a major victory for digital privacy advocates and a setback for law enforcement authorities. In the 5-4 ruling, the court said police generally need a court-approved warrant to get the data, setting a higher legal hurdle than previously existed under federal law. The court said obtaining such data without a warrant from wireless carriers, as police routinely do, amounted to an unreasonable search and seizure under the U.S. Constitution's Fourth Amendment.

White House accuses Democrats of exploiting toddler photo as Time magazine corrects story Posted: 22 Jun 2018 12:14 PM PDT The White House seized on a photo of a Honduran toddler seen sobbing at the US-Mexico border, accusing Democrats of exploiting the picture. The photograph, taken by Getty Images photographer John Moore at the scene of a border detention on June 12, became a powerful image in the media coverage of the separation of families. Dozens of newspapers and magazines published the image and it helped raise $17 million in Facebook's biggest ever fundraiser. The image was widely interpreted as showing the girl crying over being parted from her mother. However, it later emerged that the girl had not been separated from her mother. For its cover this week, titled 'Welcome to America,' Time magazine had cropped the picture to show just the girl, juxtaposing it with a picture of Mr Trump, as though he were looking down at her. In a correction Time magazine later said: "The original version of this story misstated what happened to the girl in the photo after she was taken from the scene. "The girl was not carried away screaming by US Border Patrol agents. Her mother picked her up and the two were taken away together." White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Friday: "It's shameful that Democrats and the media exploited this photo of a little girl to push their agenda. "She was not separated from her mom. The separation here is from the facts." Denis Valera, her father in Honduras, said his one-year-old daughter Yelena was with her mother Sandra Sanchez in a detention centre in Texas. He said his wife and daughter had left Honduras without his knowledge and made the trek to the US to seek asylum.. Honduras' deputy foreign minister, Nelly Jerez, confirmed Mr Valera's version of events. The photograph showed Ms Sanchez being patted down by a border guard at the side of a road near the Rio Grande as Yelena screamed. The caption on the photograph said the detention could lead to possible separation, not that this had occurred. Mr Moore had made clear in numerous media interviews that he did not know what had happened to the mother and daughter or whether they had been separated.
