Taiwan conducting war games simulating repelling Chinese attack amid heighted tensions

Posted: 07 Jun 2018 01:18 AM PDT

Taiwan conducting war games simulating repelling Chinese attack amid heighted tensionsFighter jets, helicopters and thousands of troops in Taiwan fought back a simulated Chinese invasion Thursday as the self-ruled island faces increasing military and diplomatic pressure from Beijing. Relations between Taipei and Beijing have deteriorated since President Tsai Ing-wen was elected in 2016, as her government refuses to acknowledge that Taiwan is part of "one China". Live-fire drills began Monday with troops simulating surprise air and coastal assaults to reflect increased military threats from China, which sees Taiwan as a renegade province to be brought back into the fold - by force if necessary. Tsai watched Thursday's session of the ongoing "Han Kuang" (Han Glory) exercise involving 4,100 soldiers, attack helicopters and fighter jets from an air base in Taichung. Thursday's scenario simulated the enemy bombing of an airfield and a paratrooper attack, with air and ground troops deployed to take back the base. A C-130 Hercules aircraft drops supplies during Han Kuang military drill simulating the China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) invading the island Credit: TYRONE SIU/REUTERS An F-16 fighter flew overhead and deployed flares in a defensive move against heat-seeking missiles. Special operations troops were seen moving to secure a building. "I have seen our troops' capabilities and I have faith that our troops can achieve the goal of 'solid defence and multiple deterrence'," Tsai said. China held its own live-fire drills in April in the Taiwan Strait - the narrow waterway separating the Chinese mainland from Taiwan - following weeks of air and naval manoeuvres in the area. Beijing has also stepped up diplomatic pressure on Taipei, luring four countries to switch allegiance from Taiwan to China since Tsai took office. China has been incensed by a recent warming in relations between Taiwan and the United States, which remains the island's most powerful ally and arms supplier even though it has no official diplomatic ties. President Donald Trump recently signed a symbolic bill paving the way for mutual visits by high-level officials and Washington gave long-awaited approval for a licence necessary to sell submarine technology to Taiwan. A defence spending bill currently before congress in Washington calls on the US military to participate in Taiwan's drills, including the annual Han Kuang exercise. "We are optimistic about all exchanges with the US as long as it's about national security, and regional peace and stability," defence ministry spokesman Chen Chung-chi said when asked to comment on American participation in Taiwan's drills. On Monday, the pilot of an F-16 jet involved in the drills was killed after crashing into a mountain in northern Taiwan. The cause of the incident was under investigation.

Theresa May will have formal meetings with the leaders of all the G7 - except Donald Trump

Posted: 08 Jun 2018 12:38 AM PDT

Theresa May will have formal meetings with the leaders of all the G7 - except Donald TrumpTheresa May will have formal meetings with the leaders of all the G7 countries at the group's summit in Canada - except US President Donald Trump. The US leader is at odds with the other six countries in the group - the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Italy and Japan - over his protectionist tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. Mr Trump is not expected to spend as long at the summit in Charlevoix, Quebec as other leaders, leaving little time for formal bilateral meetings in front of the world's press. In a further sign of strained relations between Mrs May and Mr Trump, sources told The Telegraph that the president has grown frustrated with Mrs May's "school mistress" tone. Mrs May is expected to have informal talks with the US president and will seek to use the summit to avert a damaging trade war, insisting she wants a "proportionate" response from the European Union to the US tariffs. The Prime Minister told reporters on the plane to the summit in Quebec: "I made my views clear on the steel and aluminium tariffs that President Trump has announced, I have done that directly to him. Why Trump's trade war with the EU and China could end in disaster "My most recent conversation with him was on Monday this week. "We disagree with these, we think they're unjustified. "Obviously the European Union will be responding. "We want to ensure, and we're working with others in the European Union to ensure, that this response is proportionate, that it is within the WTO rules. "As the UK, we want to be a great champion of free trade around the world and that's what we will continue to be. "I will continue to put the argument for the importance of those trade relationships around the world and I'll be doing that here at the G7 as I have done elsewhere and will continue to do elsewhere." The Prime Minister will join leaders from Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan in voicing concerns with the US president over the imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminium. The meeting of G7 leaders follows a stormy gathering of the countries' finance ministers earlier this month where the US was left isolated because of the rift caused by the refusal to exempt allies from the 25% tariff on steel imports and the 10% duty on aluminium. The European Commission has confirmed it intends to hit back with retaliatory tariffs from July on US imports ranging from jeans to bourbon whiskey. Despite the threat of tit-for-tat trade reprisals threatening to overshadow the meeting, Mrs May will use the summit to call on internet giants to do more to remove content showing violence against women. New Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has broken ranks with other Western leaders by calling for an end to sanctions on Russia and promising to advocate for a thaw in the relationship with Moscow. "We are very clear and will be, should the subject arise, that sanctions on Russia absolutely need to remain in place," a senior UK Government source said. Mrs May is scheduled to have a meeting with Mr Conte on Saturday after talks with Canada's Justin Trudeau, France's Emmanuel Macron, Germany's Angela Merkel and Japan's Shinzo Abe on Friday.

We think we figured out what IHOP’s name change means

Posted: 06 Jun 2018 02:03 PM PDT

We think we figured out what IHOP's name change meansIHOP has mastered the art of flipping everyone's world upside down and we're here to offer some comfort. On Monday, the breakfast chain announced that after 60 years of identifying as the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) it's re-branding to IHOb. And while no one knows for sure what the lowercase b stand for, after journeying down a dark internet hole we've got a pretty good idea. Burgers, baby. SEE ALSO: This attempt at making a giant macaron fell flat, literally The first and most logical guess is that the chain's ditching its focus on pancakes and broadening the meal scope to become "International House of breakfast." That seems a bit too predictable though, so instead, we think the "b" stands for BURGERS.  For 60 pancakin' years, we've been IHOP. Now, we're flippin' our name to IHOb. Find out what it could b on 6.11.18. #IHOb pic.twitter.com/evSxKV3QmT — IHOP (@IHOP) June 4, 2018 In a Reddit thread asking for IHOP employees to spill the beans on the name change, Reddit user lumpsr explains, "It's about burgers. We're coming out with a line of 100% Black Angus beef, hand pressed burgers. Had training on them this week and, I have to say, they're pretty good." After a little more digging Mashable discovered that lumpsr appears to work at IHOP as a manager. So, like maybe some people didn't get the memo this thing's supposed to be a secret? IDK. But IHOP's Twitter account still refuses to crack. Upon further sleuthing, more info on the alleged burger plan was uncovered: Image: screenshot/Reddit UPDATE: June 6, 2018, 3:45 p.m. PDT The original comments to Reddit have since been deleted. And other inside IHOP sources seem to be on Team Burger, as well, betraying their brand like it's no biggie. Spoiler alert guys: its burgers. I work at IHOP. Come tip me. https://t.co/ceEiC2uDcK — lexie swanson (@lexie_swanson) June 6, 2018 My inside source says burgers — DizzleRizzle (@_verydisco) June 6, 2018 More proof may come from IHOP's announcement itself. "We're flippin' our name," the brand wrote. What else do you flip? Burgers. It's unclear if IHOP will actually permanently change its name to IHOb. Sadly, this is probably a very effective use of viral marketing.  However, someone does own the Twitter handle IHOb, and it is a verified account. Still, a quick search for trademark patents returned no results for IHOb linked to the chain. It's unclear who owns the domain IHOB.com. Image: Twitter/screenhotThe IHOP Twitter account ran a poll on Tuesday, listing "Biscuits, Bacon, Butternut Squash, and Barnacles" as options, but we've got a feeling the brand's just trying to throw fans of the scent. IHOb? What could it b? #IHOb — IHOP (@IHOP) June 5, 2018 Other popular guesses include bagels, Beyoncé, Blockchain, and BITCOIN!? But please, dear lord don't let it be Bitcoin. (Don't worry, it's probably almost definitely going to be burgers.) Sadly, since IHOP decided to re-brand in the most painfully slow and torturous way possible, we'll all have to wait until June 11 to find out for sure. So until then, sit back, channel your inner IHOP, and brainstorm what the franchise's new name will be like everyone else. Please don't be IHOP Blockchain. Please don't be IHOP Blockchain Please don't be IHOP Blockchain. Please don't be IHOP Blockchain.
