Women confronted for wearing Puerto Rico shirt in a park begs for help from police Posted: 10 Jul 2018 11:44 AM PDT An Illinois park is investigating after a woman accused one of its police officers of standing by while a man harassed her for wearing an "un-American" shirt bearing the Puerto Rican flag. 24-year-old Mia Irizarry was wearing a shirt when she rented out a section of the local park for her birthday party. "You should not be wearing that in the United States of America," the man says, walking into the space which Ms Irizarry rented for her party. |

Did ancient Romans whale the Mediterranean? Posted: 10 Jul 2018 04:18 PM PDT Ancient Roman hunters may have precipitated the disappearance of grey and right whales from the Mediterranean, a study said Wednesday, suggesting commercial whaling is much older than we thought. The finding suggests right and grey whales were "common" in the North Atlantic 2,000 years ago, likely navigating the strait to calve in the temperate Mediterranean Sea. "The evidence that these two... species were present along the shores of the Roman Empire raises the hypothesis that they may have formed the basis of a forgotten whaling industry," researchers wrote in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. |

Ecuador court upholds $9.5 bln damages ruling against Chevron Posted: 10 Jul 2018 10:55 PM PDT Ecuador's highest court upheld in a ruling released Tuesday a $9.5 billion damages award against oil giant Chevron over decades of pollution that harmed indigenous people. In a ruling dated June 27 and released Tuesday, the court said "there is no violation of the constitutional rights" of Chevron in throwing out its appeal of a lower Supreme Court ruling against it in 2013. Chevron was sentenced in Ecuador over environmental damage blamed on Texaco, which Chevron acquired in 2001, in this country's rainforest during oil operations from 1964 to 1990. |

Kim Jong-un opts for potato farm visit over Mike Pompeo meeting Posted: 10 Jul 2018 10:45 PM PDT Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, appears to have opted to visit a potato farm instead of meeting Mike Pompeo when the US Secretary of State was in Pyongyang over the weekend for the latest round of discussions on the future of the Korean Peninsula. Mr Pompeo arrived in the North Korean capital on July 6 - but his three-day visit was ignored by the North Korean dictator. Mr Pompeo's aides were largely kept in the dark about the schedule for the visit, including where they would be staying, and repeated requests about when the secretary of state would be able to meet Mr Kim went unanswered. Instead, he held talks with Kim Yong-chol, a general and member of the central committee of the Workers' Party who is widely seen as Mr Kim's right-hand man. Mr Pompeo's remarks during the discussions did not please the North Korean side, however, with the Foreign Ministry quoted as describing Washington's demands for complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of North Korea as "gangster-like". North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inspects a farm in Samjiyon County Credit: AFP The North Korean leader's whereabouts were only revealed on Tuesday when state-run media ran a series of articles about his visit to provide "field guidance" to workers at the Junghung potato farm in distant Samjiyon County, on the border with China. Mr Kim told workers to only plant high-yield varieties, the Korean Central News Agency reported, and to "introduce various species that taste good and to ensure the quality of processed potato-based foods". He also described the district as the "sacred land of the revolution". Samjiyon County is close to Mount Paektu, a dormant volcano that has been co-opted by the regime to serve as a symbol of the ruling Kim dynasty. Kim Jong-un was inspecting a potato farm at the time of Mike Pompeo's visit Credit: Reuters According to official accounts, Kim Jong-il, the second leader of the nation and Mr Kim's father, was born in a hut on the flanks of the mountain while his father, Kim Il-sung, lead partisan attacks against the occupying Japanese. Other records indicate he was born in a refugee camp in eastern Russia. As well as a deliberate snub to Mr Pompeo, Mr Kim's visit was significant because he chose to demonstrate North Korea's resilience in the face of US-led sanctions on his regime. Equally, he chose to visit an area adjacent to China, which once again appears to be extending economic support to Pyongyang. |

Surviving member of German neo-Nazi murder cell jailed for life Posted: 11 Jul 2018 01:43 AM PDT The only surviving member of a German neo-Nazi cell behind a string of racist murders was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison, capping a mammoth trial that began in May 2013. Beate Zschaepe, 43, was found guilty of 10 counts of murder in deadly shootings of nine Turkish and Greek-born immigrants as well as a German policewoman carried out by a trio known as the National Socialist Underground (NSU). Although life imprisonment in Germany typically means 15 years behind bars as prisoners are often released for good conduct, Zschaepe would not be eligible for parole as judge Manfred Goetzl imposed the maximum sentence due to the "exceptional severity of the crime". |

NASA commercial crew program for space station faces delays, report says Posted: 11 Jul 2018 04:43 PM PDT Plans to launch the first NASA astronauts since 2011 to the International Space Station from the United States look set to be delayed due to incomplete safety measures and accountability holes in the agency's commercial crew program, according to a federal report released on Wednesday. SpaceX and Boeing Co are the two main contractors selected under the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's commercial crew program to send U.S. astronauts to space as soon as 2019, using their Dragon and Starliner spacecraft respectively. |
Israel Patriot missile intercepts unarmed drone from Syria: army Posted: 11 Jul 2018 08:41 AM PDT Israel fired a Patriot missile on Wednesday to intercept what initial findings showed was an unarmed Syrian drone that may have been on an intelligence mission, the army said. It was not clear if the unmanned aerial vehicle, or UAV, strayed across Syria's ceasefire line with Israel unintentionally. "UAV from Syria intercepted by Patriot missile, causing sirens in Golan and Emek HaYarden Regional Councils," an army statement said. |
