Colombia's top sniffer dog gets police protection after gangs put £50,000 price on its head Posted: 26 Jul 2018 11:44 AM PDT A police sniffer dog who has found record amounts of illegal drugs has been moved from her post after one of Colombia's biggest drug gangs put a bounty on her head. Sombra, which means Shadow in English, had been based in Turbo in the Urabá region of Colombia, a strategic point for traffickers with easy access to the sea. In the last few years, the German Shepherd's work has led directly to 245 arrests. Colombia's biggest drugs gang, the Urabeños, put a price on Sombra's head after she sniffed out 10 tonnes of their cocaine earlier this year. The gang is offering the equivalent of £53,000 for anyone who kills her, according to police intelligence. She was redeployed earlier this year from the Urabeños heartland to the country's main airport. Bogotá's El Dorado is considered safer because it is outside the area of the gang's influence. The gang is offering the equivalent of £53,000 for anyone who kills Sombra But police say they are taking no chances. As well as her usual handler, Sombra is now accompanied by extra officers to increase her protection. The Urabeños, who are also known as the Gulf Clan, are considered Colombia's most powerful criminal organisation. The gang's boss, Dairo Antonio Úsuga also known as Otoniel, is one of Colombia's most wanted men. "The fact they want to hurt Sombra and offer such a high reward for her capture or death shows the impact she's had on their profits," said a police spokesperson. Colombia is one of the world's leading producers of cocaine, with an output of around 910 tonnes per year, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. |

Iraqi Airways suspends pilots who fought in-flight over food Posted: 26 Jul 2018 06:21 AM PDT Iraqi Airways has suspended two of its pilots for getting into a fight -- over a food tray -- during an international flight with more than 150 passengers on board. "Conversation with the pilot became heated because he forbade an air hostess from bringing me a meal tray, under the pretext that I hadn't asked him for authorisation," the co-pilot said in a letter addressed to Iraqi Airways management, seen by AFP. The duo went on to land the plane safely in Baghdad, only to continue their quarrel after landing. |
Israel attacks Syrian launcher that fired rockets thought to have landed in Sea of Galilee Posted: 25 Jul 2018 01:18 PM PDT By Ori Lewis JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli jets and artillery on Wednesday attacked a site in Syria from where two rockets were launched which were thought to have landed in the Sea of Galilee, close to beachgoers, the military said. After air raid sirens sounded in the south of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, the army said rockets had been fired from Syria toward Israel. |

Israel vows to expand settlements after Israeli father stabbed to death by Palestinian teen Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:06 AM PDT Israel will build hundreds of new settlement homes in response to the killing of an Israeli father by a Palestinian teenager in the occupied West Bank, Israel's defence minister said. A 17-year-old Palestinian crept into the settlement of Adam on Thursday night and stabbed Yotam Ovadia, 31, to death. He wounded two other Israelis before being shot dead. Mr Ovadia was a father to two young children and was reportedly on his way home to cook a meal for his wife when he was killed. Avigdor Lieberman, Israel's defence minister, said the government would respond by approving 400 new homes in the settlement. "The best answer to terrorism is the expansion of settlements," Mr Lieberman said. Israel's government often responds to attacks against settlements by promising to expand the settlements even further. Britain and most of the international community believes the settlements are illegal. Mr Ovadia's killer was identified in Palestinian media as Mohammed Youssef, from the Palestinian village of Kauber. Relatives and friends gather around the body of Yotam Ovadia during his funeral in Jerusalem Credit: AP Photo/Sebastian Scheiner The Israeli military raided the village on Friday morning and questioned several members of Youssef's family. The army will demolish the family's house as part of a widely-criticised Israeli policy of destroying the homes of Palestinian attackers to try to deter future assaults. A crowd of around 150 people resisted the military's incursion into the village with rocks and fire bombs, the military said. The two other Israeli men wounded in the stabbing attack in Adam are expected to survive their injuries. Jason Greenblatt, Donald Trump's peace envoy, denounced the killing as "another barbaric attack" and asked when Palestinian leaders would condemn the stabbing. Yet another barbaric attack tonight. When will President Abbas and Palestinian leaders condemn the violence? Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families tonight.— Jason D. Greenblatt (@jdgreenblatt45) July 26, 2018 Israeli ministers also blamed the Palestinian Authority for the violence, saying it was fueled by the Palestinian policy of making payments to the families of attackers. The Palestinian Authority is yet to condemn the attack. It defends the policy of payments as part of a justified resistance to Israeli occupation. Hamas praised the attack as a "heroic action". The killing of Mr Ovadia and the army raid on Koubar came amid heightened tensions across the Holy Land. Palestinians clashed with Israeli police outside the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem on Friday. Video showed young men shooting fireworks towards police while officers responded with stun grenades. Largescale Palestinian protests are also expected at the Gaza border on Friday, after a week of on-off fighting between Israel and Hamas. Six Hamas fighters have been killed since last Friday, while one Israeli soldier was killed and another was wounded. |

Thousands flee wildfire burning near California mountain towns Posted: 26 Jul 2018 04:44 PM PDT By Dan Whitcomb LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A fast-moving Southern California wildfire believed set by a serial arsonist forced more than 3,000 residents of mountain resort communities to flee their homes on Thursday as crews fought to save homes in the path of the flames. The Cranston Fire was one of several wildland blazes that erupted on Wednesday in Riverside County, east of the city of Hemet, that authorities said appeared to have been ignited by the same suspect. Brandon McGlover, 32, was taken into custody in Hemet on Wednesday and booked on five counts of arson, the U.S. Forest Service said in a statement on the Inciweb fire tracking website. |

Israeli strikes in Gaza kill three after soldier wounded Posted: 25 Jul 2018 05:54 PM PDT Israeli strikes killed three Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday after a soldier was wounded by gunfire in a fresh flare-up of violence despite a United Nations-brokered ceasefire deal. The Israeli army said the strikes targeting Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas were in retaliation for the shots fired at its soldiers along the border earlier Wednesday. The latest bloodshed comes five days after the UN and Egypt brokered a deal to halt a surge in violence that once again raised the spectre of a new round of conflict between Hamas and Israel. |

Rivals concede Pakistan election to Imran Khan; EU flags concerns Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:34 AM PDT By Idrees Ali and Asif Shahzad ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's former ruling party conceded defeat to cricket star-turned-politician Imran Khan ahead of final results from the country's disputed election, which European Union monitors said on Friday had not been fought on a level playing field. Khan, during a speech declaring victory on Thursday, offered to investigate opposition allegations of vote-rigging and said he wanted to "unite" the country under his leadership. The party of jailed ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif initially rejected the so far incomplete results, but by Friday its leaders appeared to accept that Khan would be the next prime minister. |

Yosemite closes key visitor areas as fire rages at edges Posted: 25 Jul 2018 08:22 PM PDT By Dan Whitcomb LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The heart of Yosemite National Park was closed on Wednesday as a fierce wildfire burning just to the west jumped fire lines overnight, pouring thick smoke into the valley and forcing visitors to pack up camp and flee. Extreme temperatures, erratic winds and low humidity are supercharging the blaze and dozens of other fires were also burning in the U.S. West, with temperatures set to stay above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37 C) into Thursday in many parts of California, Oregon, Arizona and Nevada, the National Weather Service said. Heavy black smoke from the Ferguson Fire, which erupted on July 13 in the Sierra Nevada Mountains some 170 miles (275 km) east of San Francisco, prompted Yosemite park officials to shut down the main visitor hub of Yosemite Valley as well as Wawona and Mariposa Grove. |
Northern California wildfires forces thousands to evacuate Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:12 AM PDT Wildfires throughout the state have burned through tinder-dry brush and forest, forced thousands to evacuate homes and forced campers to pack up their tents at the height of summer. Gov. Jerry Brown declared states of emergency for the three largest fires, which will authorize the state to rally resources to local governments. Stiff winds drove walls of flames into the historic Gold Rush-era town of Shasta, where state parks employees had worked through the early morning to rescue historic artifacts from a museum as the blaze advanced. |
