Pakistan parties demand new elections as Khan wins votePakistan's main parties rejected the outcome of elections won by cricket star Imran Khan and announced protests demanding new polls Friday, after foreign observers criticised the pivotal vote over rigging allegations. The announcement by the All Parties Conference (APC), including the outgoing Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is a fresh obstacle to power for Khan on a day when delayed results finally showed he had won an emphatic victory -- though he will need to seek a coalition to form a government. The nationwide election held Wednesday has been criticised by the United States, the European Union and other observers after widespread claims that the powerful military was trying to fix the playing field in Khan's favour.

Hundreds of migrant children still not returned to parents amid warnings they are disappearing into 'black hole'

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 04:55 PM PDT

Hundreds of migrant children still not returned to parents amid warnings they are disappearing into 'black hole'More than 700 migrant children remain in custody after being separated from their families despite a court order that they be reunited with relatives by Thursday evening. In a court filing, the Trump administration said more than 1800 migrant children had been handed back to family members in time for a deadline set by a federal judge in San Diego. That still leaves more than 700 children who were not "eligible" to be reunited, including 431 with parents who have already been deported. The American Civil Liberties Union, which brought the case against the government, said the data showed "dozens of separated children still have not been matched to a parent". And immigration campaigners said the government's attempts to meet the deadline were characterised by confusion and risked leaving children in a "black hole". Lutheran Social Services workers link arms to obscure children arriving with adults in Phoenix to be reunited Credit: Matt York/AP Maria Odom, vice president of legal services for Kids in Need of Defence, said two children who were represented by the group were sent from New York to Texas to be reunited with their mother. When they arrived, they learned their mother had already been deported, she said. Her group now cannot find the children, aged 9 and 14. It was an example, she added, "of how impossible it is to track these children once they are placed in the black hole of reunification." The story behind photograph that revealed a scandal The Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy toward illegal immigration led to the separation of about 2,500 children while their parents, some asylum seekers, went through a legal process. An outcry at home and abroad forced President Donald Trump to order a halt to the separations in June. US Judge Dana Sabraw in San Diego ordered the government to reunite the families and set Thursday as the deadline. Mr Sabraw has criticised some aspects of the process, but in recent days, he has praised government efforts. As of Monday, 900 people had received final orders of removal, and civil rights groups said they must decide if they want to return home as a family or leave their child in the United States to fight for asylum separately. Government lawyers told a federal judge this week that 917 parents may not be eligible for prompt reunification because they have already been deported, have waived reunification, have criminal backgrounds, or are otherwise deemed unfit. The group included 463 the government said are no longer in the United States. Rights activists said some may have been coerced or misled into returning home, believing it was the only way to see their child. Government officials have said everyone in an immigration detention center has been given notice of their rights and contact information for a lawyer. One immigrant, Douglas Almendarez, told Reuters he believed that returning to Honduras was the only way to be reunited with his 11-year-old son. "They told me: 'He's ahead of you'," said Mr Almendarez, 37, in the overgrown backyard of his modest soda shop several hours drive from the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. "It was a lie." As he has previously stated during his time in office, Jeff Sessions, attorney general, on Thursday said voters backed Mr Trump, who made his hardline immigration stance a keystone of his 2016 election campaign. "We have a very generous legal immigration system," he said in Boston. "But the illegality must end. That's what the American people want."

Will a Trade War With China Hurt Tech Stocks? The technology sector has been one of the S&P 500's best-performers, up 14 percent year-to-date, and until now, tech appears mostly unscathed by the rattling of trade war sabers between the U.S. and China. Parts of the U.S. technology sector rely on Chinese manufacturing and if trade war rhetoric continues to escalate, will investors start to change their mind on technology? Amanda Agati, co-chief investment strategist at PNC Financial Services Group in Philadelphia, says PNC doesn't believe a trade war between the U.S. and China will occur, despite the heightened rhetoric, tariffs and counter-tariffs imposed by the two countries.

Painfully awkward photo shows Mueller and Trump Jr. waiting at the same airport gate

Painfully awkward photo shows Mueller and Trump Jr. waiting at the same airport gatePolitico caught Donald Trump Jr. and Robert Mueller very awkwardly hanging out at the same airport gate in Washington D.C. on Friday.  In the photo, Don Jr. — or as he likes to call himself in his gym selfies, Donald Pump — leans against the back wall talking on the phone. Despite his camouflage hat, he fails to blend into the airport's stark gray wall because he's wearing an unreasonably bright teal shirt. He's doing what we've all done before when we run into someone we really don't want to make small talk with: chilling on his phone.  SEE ALSO: Mueller reportedly wants to question Trump about his Tweets Robert Mueller, meanwhile, very pointedly stares at the newspaper in his hands. If he just looked up and behind him he would make eye contact with the son of the man he's leading an investigation against.  The awkwardness in that airport is so tense, you can feel it through the photo.  In case you have any doubts, Politico's Jake Sherman confirmed that the man in the offensively vibrant shirt is indeed Donald Trump Jr. According to CNN, special counsel spokesman Peter Carr confirmed that it is Mueller waiting at the gate.  For the clowns saying that it was not Donald Trump Jr., here he is on the flight from dca to hpn (westchester county) w secret service agent. pic.twitter.com/GGZciqrrTG — Jake Sherman (@JakeSherman) July 27, 2018 People couldn't help but joke about the tension at that airport gate. Mueller's probably better off that way. WATCH: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No. It's an inflatable Trump baby flying around London

Malcolm Turnbull outrages Australia by eating pie with knife and fork

Malcolm Turnbull outrages Australia by eating pie with knife and forkMalcolm Turnbull, Australia's prime minister, has been ridiculed for using a knife and fork to eat a meat pie, prompting claims he has upended a venerated tradition and left the nation "forever changed". In a move likened to Ed Miliband's awkward consumption of a bacon sandwich in 2014, Mr Turnbull sat down to eat a pie during a campaign stop in Tasmania and opted to use cutlery.  Footage of the incident was posted on his Instagram account and quickly prompted fierce debate.  "A pie that small should, and always will be, only eaten by a technique that is learned when you go to a school with a tuck shop," one person wrote on Twitter.  "Two hands. Gently press down on the far side whilst slightly slurping the near side."  Malcolm Turnbull eating a meat pie using a knife and fork in Australia  Credit: Instagram story Australians typically eat a meat pie with their hands and many consider it a native dish, though it is believed to date back at least as far as ancient Greece.  A report on the Ten Daily website said "Australia Is Forever Changed" and suggested the incident would not have secured any votes for Mr Turnbull, who has been campaigning ahead of a series of by-elections on Saturday. "Remember the old riddle, Malcolm," said the report. "What's the best thing to put into a pie? Your teeth." Ed Miliband having trouble eating a bacon sandwich in 2014 Credit: Eyevine The incident was compared with former prime minister Tony Abbott's memorable bite into an unpeeled raw  onion and with Australian opposition leader Bill Shorten's decision to eat a sausage sandwich by biting into the middle rather than starting at the end. Some critics also questioned Mr Turnbull's decision to forgo tomato sauce.  "[Mr Turnbull] has become the latest to join the pantheon of Pollies Who Look Like Aliens Around Regular Foodstuff," said a report in The Australian. "It's easy to laugh, but it is a minefield." In pictures: Politicians and the greatest food faux-pas of all time However, Mr Turnbull received some support as defenders noted the difficulty of cleanly eating a pie without cutlery. "It's time we admitted there's nothing wrong with using a knife and fork to eat a pie," said 2GB Radio commentator Ben Fordham on Twitter. "Discuss." One response said: "It's about the enjoyment!  If you like to enjoy it without the threat of a lava hot mouthful burning you from the inside out or cascading down the front of your clothes, then the plate, knife and fork is preferable!  As my Nana said, 'To each, his own!'"
