Oil Traders Who Expect Iran Waivers Are in for a Shock: Hedgeye Posted: 25 Oct 2018 09:10 PM PDT Traders who expect the U.S. to hand out waivers allowing certain nations to continue buying oil from the Islamic Republic, "are making a huge miscalculation," Joe McMonigle, head of energy policy at Hedgeye, said in a note. "We see more than a 50 percent chance of an early enforcement of Iran sanctions to send a message and incentivize others to get Iran imports to zero," McMonigle said. The international benchmark could even hit $90 a barrel for the first time since 2014, before settling back to around $85, McMonigle said.

Turkey's Erdogan to Saudis: Who gave order to kill Khashoggi? Posted: 26 Oct 2018 02:55 AM PDT Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan urged Saudi Arabia on Friday to disclose who gave the order to kill journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as well the location of his body, saying Turkey had more information about the case than it has shared so far. Erdogan also said Riyadh needed to reveal the identity of the "local cooperator" who Saudi officials earlier said had taken Khashoggi's body from Saudi agents after the journalist was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. Saudi Arabia said on Thursday the killing of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was premeditated, reversing previous statements that it was unintended.

Saudi Arabia changes its story again and says Jamal Khashoggi was killed in 'premeditated' murder Posted: 25 Oct 2018 04:04 AM PDT Saudi Arabia changed its explanation of Jamal Khashoggi's death once again on Thursday, saying that the journalist's murder was "premeditated" by Saudi operatives. The kingdom initially claimed that Mr Khashoggi walked out of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul unharmed on October 2, then later said that he was killed accidentally in a "fist fight" with a 15-man team of Saudi agents. Saudi Arabia said Thursday it had received new information from Turkish investigators which showed that "the suspects in the incident had committed their act with a premeditated intention". In all three versions of the explanation, authorities insisted that Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, was not responsible for the Washington Post columnist's death. The Saudi announcement came hours after it emerged that Gina Haspel, the CIA director, had listened to a Turkish audio tape which allegedly shows that Mr Khashoggi was tortured before being killed. Turkish officials have long said that the tape disproves Saudi claims that the agents did not mean to kill Mr Khashoggi. Turkey has not made the tape public and the CIA did not officially confirm that Ms Haspel had heard it. Jamal Khashoggi | read more Ms Haspel briefed Donald Trump, the US president, about her recent trip to Turkey and meetings with Turkish officials about the Khashoggi case. The White House is treading a delicate line between being seen to take action on Mr Khashoggi's death without upsetting US ties with Saudi Arabia or alienating Crown Prince Mohammed. Meanwhile, Mr Khashoggi's son, Salah, who had previously been under a travel ban, was allowed to leave Saudi Arabia. The son was summoned to the royal palace on Wednesday, where state media took photographs of him shaking hands with Crown Prince Mohammed, the man accused of ordering his father's murder. Theresa May, the prime minister, told King Salman of Saudi Arabia that the UK also did not accept the accidental death explanation. In her first phone call with the Saudi monarch since the Mr Khashoggi's disappearance, the prime minister said Wednesday that the accidental death story "lacks credibility so there remains an urgent need to establish exactly what happened", Downing Street said. "She strongly urged Saudi Arabia to cooperate with the Turkish investigation and to be transparent about the results. It is important that the full facts are established." Mrs May said the UK would revoke visas from anyone suspected taking part in Mr Khashoggi's death. How the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi unfolded The EU parliament also passed a symbolic resolution calling for European nations to halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia in light of Mr Khashoggi's killing. Germany has stopped selling weapons to Riyadh but the UK appears likely to continue. Turkish police took water samples from a well at the home of the Saudi consul-general, where the Saudi operatives are believed to have taken Mr Khashoggi's body after killing him at the consulate. The latest shift in explanation came two days after Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's president, said that the killing was "planned" and rejected the Saudi explanation of an accidental death during a fist fight. "Intelligence and security institutions have evidence showing the murder was certainly planned," Mr Erdogan said during a speech to parliament. Riyadh's new story closes the gap between Turkey and Saudi Arabia's narratives of what happened, but still leaves several issues unresolved. Mr Erdogan said he did not believe that "rogue" agents were responsible for the killing and said "those who gave the orders" must be held accountable. He did not directly accuse the crown prince of involvement, as several leading US senators have. Despite international condemnation and widespread boycott of its Davos in the Desert investment conference, Saudi Arabia said it signed $56 billion of deals this week and expected the United States to remain a key business partner. More than two dozen top officials and executives from the United States and Europe, including US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and chief executives of big banks, boycotted the investment conference. There was concern that, temporarily at least, commercial ties with the West could be damaged as the blow to Riyadh's reputation and the risk of economic sanctions over the Khashoggi affair made it harder to enter new deals. Still, the three-day Future Investment Initiative conference drew hundreds of businessmen and government officials from around the world to a palatial venue in Riyadh, aiming to attract foreign capital to support Saudi economic reforms. "There were more than 25 deals signed worth $56 billion," Saudi Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih told state television on Thursday, adding that U.S. companies accounted for most of those contracts. He added: "The US will remain a key part of the Saudi economy because the interests that tie us are bigger than what is being weakened by the failed boycotting campaign of the conference."
