Vast numbers of decomposing bodies could still be buried beneath this once-thriving neighbourhood, the search and rescue agency said.

Social media contributed to my stroke, says Norman Lamb

Posted: 05 Oct 2018 02:06 PM PDT

Social media contributed to my stroke, says Norman LambA former health minister has said that "addictive" social media contributed to his stroke, as he warned that websites such as Twitter and Facebook could have a "distorting" effect. Norman Lamb, the Lib Dem MP, suffered a minor stroke in March that was at the time attributed to his high workload. He told The Daily Telegraph that his overuse of technology and social media was one of the causes. "I have addictive tendencies," he said. "I use social media late at night, sometimes lying in bed. It's the first thing I look at in the morning. Twitter is very addictive." Mr Lamb, 61, the MP  for North Norfolk and chairman of the Commons science and technology committee that is conducting an inquiry into the effects of social media on young people, served as health minister until 2015. He said technology had increased the "pressure" on MPs, who received "instant feedback" and a "stream of tweets" after public appearances. "You get constituency case work via Facebook, Twitter, Messenger, text messages, emails, phone calls, people turning up at the office," Mr Lamb said. "There's an assumption you'll respond to an email quickly. When you leave it for a few days, there's a pressure of 'Why have you not responded?' "When I had a health shock before Easter, when I discovered I'd had a stroke, I realised I was on a treadmill. I was just struggling to keep on top of it. So I immediately said, 'Someone else can manage my email account'." Mr Lamb's committee's inquiry has heard evidence from young people who spend "all the time on social media". He is sympathetic. "Most people are capable of this drift into obsession," he said. "It's commonplace for teenagers to message each other at two in the morning... You never escape it." Mr Lamb spoke in support of The Daily Telegraph campaign calling for social media companies to have a duty of care towards their users. He said: "These are very powerful organisations making a lot of money, and they have a real moral obligation to safeguard the health and well-being of these generations growing up." However, he urged caution when it comes to regulation. "We mustn't throw the baby out with the bath water – we must be smart and intelligent in how we do this, and work from the basis of evidence," he said. Read more | Social media addiction Mr Lamb also highlighted the positive aspects of social media, which were not available when his son, Archie, was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder in his teens. "The fact that young people can access help, support, guidance on mental health issues and on how you navigate your way through challenges can be of enormous value," Mr Lamb said. "Archie is now thriving and successful in the music business but I remember the moment he was diagnosed with OCD and said 'Dad, why am I the only person going mad?'" "Since nobody else is talking about it, you think you're the only one who is experiencing this. Now, you can go to your room and type in 'OCD', and you realise that actually lots of people are."

Missing toll soars to 5,000 in Indonesia quake and tsunami

Posted: 07 Oct 2018 03:40 AM PDT

Missing toll soars to 5,000 in Indonesia quake and tsunamiThe number of people believed missing from the quake and tsunami that struck Indonesia's Palu city has soared to 5,000, an official said Sunday, an indication that far more may have perished in the twin disaster than the current toll. Indonesia's disaster agency say they have recovered 1,763 bodies so far from the 7.5-magnitude and subsequent tsunami that struck Sulawesi on September 28. But there are fears that two of the hardest-hit neighbourhoods in Palu - Petobo and Balaroa - could contain thousands more victims, swallowed up by ground that engulfed whole communities in a process known as liquefaction. "Based on reports from the (village) heads of Balaroa and Petobo, there are about 5,000 people who have not been found," agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told reporters Sunday. "Nevertheless, officials there are still trying to confirm this and are gathering data. It is not easy to obtain the exact number of those trapped by landslides, or liquefaction, or mud." How Palu became a death trap - and why magnitude of waves was 'surprising' Nugroho said the search for the unaccounted would continue until October 11, at which point they would be listed as missing, presumed dead. The figure drastically increases the estimates for those who disappeared when the disaster struck 10 days ago. Officials had initially predicted some 1,000 people were buried beneath the ruins of Palu. But the latest tally speaks to the considerable destruction in the worst-hit areas of Petobo and Balaroa as the picture on the ground has become clearer.

Google shows progress in addressing competition concerns, says EU's VestagerGoogle's proposals to increase competition in online shopping are bearing fruit, Europe's antitrust chief said on Friday, suggesting that the company may be able to avoid further fines. Alphabet Inc's Google last year offered to allow price-comparison rivals to bid for advertising space at the top of a search page, giving them the chance to compete on equal terms, seeking to appease regulators after the European Commission fined it a record 2.4 billion euros ($2.8 billion) for favouring its own service. European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said she saw further improvement since Google's first report in June showed some rivals had benefited from the company's action.

A Twitter convo about self-appreciation was the best thing on the internet this weekThis is One Good Thing , a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week. This week, a bunch of people had a really nice conversation about change, self-acceptance, and personal growth. On Twitter. (Yes, that is possible.)  It all started when writer and 112BK host Ashley Ford posed a question to her followers on Sunday. "What's something you hated about yourself as a kid or teenager that you now consider a strength?" she asked. What's something you hated about yourself as a kid or teenager that you now consider a strength? — Ashley C. Ford (@iSmashFizzle) September 30, 2018 The answers flooded in almost immediately. People talked about their issues with body image, personality traits that made them feel "weird" in middle school, their heritage, their hair – things that used to make them feel bad, but that they now embrace as a vital part of their identities.
