Tesla has a surprise reveal for Grand Basel show; is it the production Roadster? Posted: 31 Aug 2018 10:00 AM PDT The Grand Basel show in Switzerland will play host to a new Tesla reveal, the electric car manufacturer confirmed Friday. Noting the show's theme, the production version of the Tesla's second-generation Roadster is the most likely candidate for a debut, unless the company is prepared to show off something truly surprising. CEO Elon Musk pulled a classic Steve Jobs "one more thing" moment during the reveal of the Tesla Semi and surprised with the Roadster concept car last November. |

Russia says Syria has right to chase rebels out of Idlib: agencies Posted: 31 Aug 2018 06:57 AM PDT Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday the Syrian government had every right to chase militants out of the rebel-held enclave of Idlib and that talks on establishing humanitarian corridors there were ongoing. The Syrian province of Idlib and surrounding areas are the last major enclave held by rebels opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a close Russian ally. Syrian government forces "had the full right to protect its sovereignty and to drive out, liquidate the terrorist threat on its territory", Lavrov was cited as saying by the Interfax news agency. |

"Hot beverages is one of the few remaining segments of the total beverage landscape where Coca-Cola does not have a global brand. Costa gives us access to this market through a strong coffee platform," Coca-Cola chief executive James Quincey said in a joint statement. |

Rains affecting more than 1.2 million residents across 27 counties in eastern Guangdong have left two people dead and two missing, and have caused more than 1 billion yuan ($146 million) worth of damage, including to 44,700 hectares of farmland, Xinhua said. China is forced to evacuate hundreds of thousands of residents of flood-prone regions every summer. |

Saudi Arabia hints at plan to turn Qatar into an island Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:43 PM PDT A Saudi official hinted Friday the kingdom was moving forward with a plan to dig a canal that would turn the neighbouring Qatari peninsula into an island, amid a diplomatic feud between the Gulf nations. "I am impatiently waiting for details on the implementation of the Salwa island project, a great, historic project that will change the geography of the region," Saud al-Qahtani, a senior adviser to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, said on Twitter. The plan, which would physically separate the Qatari peninsula from the Saudi mainland, is the latest stress point in a highly fractious 14-month long dispute between the two states. |

U.S. argues Harvard admissions policies harm Asian-Americans Posted: 30 Aug 2018 11:10 AM PDT The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday backed a lawsuit accusing Harvard University of discriminating against Asian-American applicants, throwing its support behind a case that could impact the use of race-based college admissions. The department, which has been investigating Harvard for potential civil rights violations over its affirmative action policy, made its argument in documents filed in federal court in Boston, where the case is scheduled to go to trial in October. The Justice Department argued that Harvard had failed to prove that its use of race as a factor in deciding which students to admit had not resulted in it illegally discriminating against Asian-Americans. |

Turkey blacklists jihadist group as Idlib operation looms Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:09 AM PDT Turkey on Friday officially designated the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) jihadist group as a "terrorist" organisation, ahead of an anticipated operation by the Syrian regime in the province of Idlib, much of which is controlled by the group. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces have been massing for days around Idlib near the Turkish border and look poised to launch what could be a last major battle in the civil war that has torn Syria since 2011. Turkey, which has already listed Al-Nusra and Al-Qaeda as terror groups, updated its list of terror groups under a document published in the official gazette and included HTS on the new list. |

Judge gives U.S. more time to decide on retrying Manafort on deadlocked charges Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:55 PM PDT U.S. prosecutors have more time to decide whether to retry former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort on 10 criminal charges that a jury deadlocked on last week, a judge ordered on Thursday. U.S. District Judge T. S. Ellis delayed the deadline for Special Counsel Robert Mueller to make the decision until one week after Ellis rules on any post-trial motions that Manafort may submit. The original deadline had been Wednesday, which prosecutors said would be difficult to meet because Manafort's lawyers had requested a 30-day extension to file their post-trial motions. |

Syria rebels blow up bridges to hamper expected Idlib assault Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:23 AM PDT Rebels from Syria's Idlib have blown up two key bridges in a bid to hamper an expected government assault on the country's last remaining rebel-held province, a monitor said on Friday. The bridges over the Orontes River linked areas of neighbouring Hama province, under government control, to rebel-held territory in Idlib, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The bridges were located in the Al-Ghab plain, which straddles Hama and Idlib provinces and could be one of the first targets of any government offensive. |

Schnatter remains a member of the board and holds 30 percent of the company's shares. Schnatter is suing the board and CEO Steve Ritchie "to stop the irreparable harm those individuals are causing due to their repeated, and ongoing, breaches of the duties of loyalty and care they owe to the company," according to a statement from Schnatter. |

The service expects to buy 72 production MQ-25 aircraft at a total program cost of roughly $13 billion. |
