In Idlib, worried father turns paper cups into gas masks Posted: 12 Sep 2018 08:29 AM PDT Fearing the worst in the looming battle for Syria's last rebel stronghold, one desperate father is doing everything to protect his kids -- fashioning gas masks from paper party cups and plastic bags. Hudhayfa al-Shahhad, who lives in the northwestern province of Idlib, is determined he and his family will be ready as best as possible for any chemical weapons attack, and has even dug a cave under his home to sit out any bombings. "I learnt how to make them on YouTube," says the 27-year-old policeman demonstrating the rudimentary homemade masks, which he hopes may spare his three young children from the potentially deadly effects of any gas attack. |

California shooting: 'Mass shooting' leaves six dead in Bakersfield Posted: 13 Sep 2018 12:56 AM PDT Six people have died following an apparent mass shooting in the California city of Bakersfield, according to local authorities. The gunman is understood to have taken his own life and that of his wife in the incident, which appears to have begun over an altercation at a local trucking business. There was no immediate word on what sparked the shootings that took place at a home and at the business in Bakersfield, which lies 90 miles north of Los Angeles. |

Hungary's Orban vows to defy EU pressure ahead of unprecedented vote Posted: 11 Sep 2018 12:52 PM PDT Some momentum might have been building against Orban during the evening ahead of the Wednesday vote. Since sweeping to power in 2010, Orban has pressured Hungary's courts, media and non-governmental groups, as well as refusing to take in asylum seekers arriving in Europe. If approved, the motion would go to the EU's national leaders, theoretically opening the way for sanctions such as a suspension of Hungary's voting rights in the bloc. |

Cancer to kill 10 mn in 2018 despite better prevention Posted: 12 Sep 2018 07:30 AM PDT An estimated 18.1 million new cancer cases were predicted worldwide for 2018 -- with 9.6 million deaths, said a report of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). This is up from estimated 14.1 million new cancer cases and 8.2 million deaths reported in the agency's last assessment just six years ago. An increased focus on prevention -- encouraging people to get exercise, quit smoking, and eating a healthy diet -- led to a drop in certain types of cancer in some population groups, the IARC said. |
Pope to meet US bishops Thursday over abuse scandal Posted: 11 Sep 2018 04:09 PM PDT VATICAN CITY (AP) — With the Catholic Church in crisis once again over clerical sex abuse and cover-up, Pope Francis will meet Thursday with U.S. cardinals and bishops who are demanding to know how one of their own was able to climb the clerical ranks despite allegations that he slept with seminarians. |

As hurricane bears down, Trump... makes it about Trump Posted: 12 Sep 2018 07:50 AM PDT As Hurricane Florence churned towards the US East Coast on Wednesday, Donald Trump assured Americans the government stood ready -- and slipped in some bragging about his handling of monster storms in the past. In his first tweet on the topic early, Trump urged residents in Florence's path to "be safe," assuring them federal emergency workers were "ready for the big one that's coming" -- so far so normal for a US president addressing the population as a disaster looms. |

EU's Juncker confirms aims for close ties with Britain after Brexit Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:31 AM PDT European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday renewed a pledge of close trade and security ties with Britain after Brexit but said the European Union would not compromise on key withdrawal terms. Delivering his annual state-of-the-union speech to the European Parliament, Juncker said the EU will not allow Britain to participate only in some parts of the bloc's single market after Brexit without honoring all of the rules. |

Putin says two Skripal poisoning suspects are 'civilians' Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:31 AM PDT Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday the two men Britain suspects of poisoning former spy Sergei Skripal with military-grade nerve agent are not criminals and have been identified as civilians. Speaking at an economic forum with Japan's Shinzo Abe and China's Xi Jinping in the far eastern city of Vladivostok, Putin urged the men to address the media and said there was "nothing criminal". |
China urges U.S. to 'abandon prejudice' over Xinjiang Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:43 AM PDT China urged the United States on Wednesday to abandon its "prejudice" over Xinjiang, as the Trump administration considers sanctions against Chinese officials and companies linked to allegations of human rights abuses in the Chinese region. Discussions have gained momentum within the U.S. government over possible economic penalties in response to reports of mass detentions of ethnic Uighurs and other Muslims in the far western region, which have prompted a growing international outcry. Any sanctions decision would be a rare move on human rights grounds by U.S. President Donald Trump against China, with which he has engaged in a trade war while also seeking Beijing's help to resolve a standoff over North Korea's nuclear weapons. |

Appearing in court in Pasadena for his preliminary hearing, Mr Gonzales listened as women testified about their experiences dating the alleged tab-skipper. Martha Barba said she was due to meet Mr Gonzales at a Chipotle outlet in July 2016, before he convinced her into a meal close by at an upscale eatery called Houston's. |

Tim Cook trolled us all with a fake Twitter DM fail right before the Apple event Posted: 12 Sep 2018 10:26 AM PDT The 2018 Apple event at Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California has finally arrived, and minutes before it began, CEO Tim Cook didn't seem prepared. Just before the event was set to begin, Cook tweeted a cryptic and confusing message that the world assumed was meant to be a direct message. Image: screengrab/twitterIt happens to the best of us, but unfortunately Cook has 10.9 million followers watching from around the world, so... embarrassing, right? Well, not so fast... SEE ALSO: Live from Apple's 2018 iPhone event The tweet was quickly deleted, but not before people grabbed screenshots and poked fun at the CEO for what they assumed must be a mistake. The opening video features an Apple employee sprinting across the company's sprawling campus to the Steve Jobs Theater carrying a mysterious box, while the Mission Impossible theme plays in the background. The box, it's revealed in the end, contains Cook's clicker. It seems Cook knew what he was doing all along and just wanted to rattle fans' cages before the big reveal with a fake Twitter DM slip up. Nicely played, dude. WATCH: You can own a fully functional vintage Apple-1 computer — but it'll cost you |

Poland worried by EU vote to censure Hungary Posted: 12 Sep 2018 11:33 AM PDT Poland on Wednesday said it was very worried by the European Parliament's rare decision to launch a procedure against Hungary for posing a "systemic threat" to the EU's founding values. The vote took the first steps under Article 7 of the European Union Treaty, known by some in Brussels as the "nuclear option", which could ultimately strip Hungary of its EU voting rights. Other EU governments could halt any further action, however, and Poland -- a fellow ex-communist state that is also facing an Article 7 procedure -- has warned it would do so. |

Trump signs order to enable sanctions for U.S. election meddling Posted: 12 Sep 2018 04:54 PM PDT The order, coming only eight weeks before congressional elections on Nov. 6, drew immediate criticism from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers as too little, too late. Trump signed the order behind closed doors with no reporters present, a rare departure from what has been his standard practice. "As I have made clear, the United States will not tolerate any form of foreign meddling in our elections," Trump said in a statement. |

In first, US capital may employ levee against Hurricane Florence Posted: 12 Sep 2018 03:52 PM PDT It is an unremarkable wall a stone's throw from the White House, barely noticed by tourists and locals alike. "With Florence coming in and her path still uncertain, and depending on how much rain we get given that the system is already saturated, we'll continue to monitor" water levels, Litterst said. |
