Canadian MPs vote to strip Aung San Suu Kyi of honorary citizenship Posted: 27 Sep 2018 09:58 PM PDT The Canadian parliament has voted unanimously to strip Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma's civilian leader, of her honorary citizenship after global criticism of her handling of the Rohingya crisis. Ottawa had awarded the symbolic honour, which does not afford Canadian rights or privileges, to the Nobel laureate in 2007 after she endured years of house arrest as a political prisoner. The vote in the House of Commons lower chamber means that she will no longer be a member of an elite group of only five other honorary Canadians, which includes Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, and the Dalai Lama. The decision, which must still be ratified by the Senate, comes one week after another unanimous vote by Canadian MPs to declare the Burmese military campaign against the Rohingya Muslim minority a genocide. The Burmese army is accused of mass killings, rape and arson in a brutal crackdown last year which drove more than 700,000 Rohingya into neighbouring Bangladesh, where they now live in cramped refugee camps. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt meets with members of the Rohingya community in Rakhine State Credit: Ye Aung Thu/AFP A spokesman for Chrystia Freeland, Canada's foreign minister, confirmed to the Globe and Mail that the government supported the motion to revoke Ms Suu Kyi's citizenship in response to "her continued failure to speak out against the genocide of the Rohingya, a crime being committed by the military with which she shares power." Ms Suu Kyi was previously called out by a searing United Nations investigation for failing to use her "moral authority" to prevent violence against the Rohingya minority. The investigation by three independent UN experts, which concludes that Burma's top generals should be tried for genocide, and the case referred to the International Criminal Court, was presented to the UN's Human Rights Council in Geneva last week. The rights body voted on Thursday to set up an independent panel to prepare criminal indictments over the atrocities committed in Burma. Saw for myself in Rakhine that real accountability for atrocities requires this new mechanism to secure the evidence. Burma has been a priority for us here at #UNGA so the decision by @UN_HRC today is great news. Step forward but much more to do. https://t.co/QEpHvhouWh— Jeremy Hunt (@Jeremy_Hunt) September 27, 2018 Thirty-five of the council's 47 members supported a text that mandates the panel to prepare "files in order to facilitate and expedite fair and independent criminal proceedings... in national, regional or international courts or tribunals." Only three countries – China, the Philippines and Burundi – voted against the resolution. Jeremy Hunt, the British foreign secretary, welcomed the decision as a "step forward" for establishing justice. "Saw for myself in Rakhine that real accountability for atrocities requires this new mechanism to secure the evidence. Burma has been a priority for us her at #UNGA so the decision by @UN_HRC today is great news. Step forward but much more to do," he said on Twitter. The military has denied nearly all wrongdoing, justifying its crackdown as a legitimate means of rooting out Rohingya militants. |
Hundreds killed in Indonesia quake-tsunami Posted: 29 Sep 2018 07:49 AM PDT Nearly 400 people were killed when a powerful quake sent a tsunami barrelling into the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, officials said Saturday, as hospitals struggled to cope with hundreds of injured and rescuers scrambled to reach the stricken region. The national disaster agency put the official death toll so far at 384, all of them in the tsunami-struck city of Palu, but warned the toll was likely to rise. There were also concerns over the whereabouts of hundreds of people preparing for a beach festival that had been due to start Friday evening, the disaster agency said. |

It was a Lockheed Martin F-35B, a short take-off/vertical landing version of the F-35, said a U.S. military official, speaking on condition of anonymity. It was the first crash of an F-35 fighter jet since they became operational in 2006, said another military official, also speaking on the condition of anonymity. |
Netanyahu, in U.N. speech, claims secret Iranian nuclear site Posted: 28 Sep 2018 05:21 AM PDT Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Netanyahu showed an aerial photograph of the Iranian capital marked with a red arrow and pointed to what he said was a previously secret warehouse holding nuclear-related material. Netanyahu spoke 4-1/2 months after U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the accord, arguing it did too little to rein in Tehran's nuclear ambitions and triggering the resumption of U.S. economic sanctions on Iran. |

It was the deadliest attack in New York since the September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda hijackings brought down the Twin Towers. |

Italy's populists challenge EU with plans to boost deficit Posted: 28 Sep 2018 09:26 AM PDT After tussling with Economy Minister Giovanni Tria for weeks, the four-month old government on Thursday proposed a 2019 deficit that is, at 2.4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), three times the previous administration's target. The rub is that Italy has the largest debt among big European Union economies, at 131 percent of GDP, and it is under pressure from the EU to rein in spending amid fears it could sow the seeds of a new debt crisis in the euro zone. In a move certain to raise hackles with the European Commission, which monitors and enforces EU fiscal rules, the government sees the deficit remaining at 2.4 percent for the next three years, rather than progressively declining toward zero as the Commission's recipe prescribes. |

The Future of Real Estate -- With Fewer Agents? Posted: 28 Sep 2018 01:04 PM PDT The real estate industry is facing disruption, and not just on one front. New real estate brokerages are offering an alternative to the way agents do business, tech startups are providing more information and ease of access to consumers and professionals, and companies are helping consumers bypass the need for a real estate agent altogether. Some argue that real estate agents will become obsolete, while others believe the way real estate transactions are closed will evolve. |
