Indonesian investigators examine black box from crashed jet Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:47 AM PDT Indonesia's second-deadliest air disaster since 1997 has prompted renewed concern about its patchy safety record, and the government has said Lion Air will be regulated more closely. "Tonight we will move as quickly as possible to download what is in this black box," Haryo Satmiko, deputy chief of Indonesia's transportation safety committee (KNKT), told a news conference. Despite initial reports, authorities did not know for certain whether the "crash survivable memory unit" was from the flight data recorder or cockpit voice recorder, as portions of it were missing, Satmiko said. |

Demonstrations broke out after the Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned a blasphemy conviction for Christian mother Asia Bibi, ending her eight year ordeal on death row but infuriating Muslim conservatives. One key protest leader has called for the assassination of the country's top judges and for mutiny against the army's top brass since the court's decision reignited the touchpaper issue. |

Google celebrates Day of the Dead with colourful skull-themed doodle Posted: 02 Nov 2018 04:38 AM PDT Google has marked Day of the Dead, or El Día de los Muertos, with a colourful skull-themed doodle. SEE ALSO: Google's new Doodle is a terrifyingly addictive Halloween game you can play with friends Day of the Dead is a holiday observed in cities and towns throughout Mexico, which dates back thousands of years. Per National Geographic, the purpose is "to demonstrate love and respect for deceased family members." In a blogpost explaining the doodle, Google described some of the ways families observe the tradition. Image: google"Families prepare for the celebration far in advance, cleaning the house and decorating it with fragrant marigold flowers and intricate tissue-paper cutouts," reads the blog. "Playful calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls), are usually seen in festive attire, enjoying (after)life to the fullest." "Colourful ofrendas or altars are set up in many homes, surrounded by favourite food and drink, as well as photographs and cherished mementos, plus sweet Pan de Muertos and sugar skulls," the blog continues. Image: google"Burning candles and incense is also customary to set the mood, evoke the spirit world, and serve as a reminder that death is just another part of life and that human connections will always endure." Slashed award accepted in Monsanto cancer trial Posted: 31 Oct 2018 06:08 PM PDT A cancer-stricken groundskeeper has accepted a slashed award in a landmark trial focused on weed-killer Roundup, setting the stage for an appeal by maker Monsanto. Judge Suzanne Bolanos last week denied Monsanto's request for a new trial but cut the $289 million damages award to $78 million to comply with the law regarding how punitive damages awards must be calculated. In her ruling, Bolanos gave Johnson the choice of accepting the lessened damages award or triggering a new trial focused on what Monsanto should pay in the case. |

Ted Cruz makes a Zodiac Killer Halloween joke in a last-ditch effort to be relatable Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:52 PM PDT The timeline just got a whole lot darker. Still recovering from getting roasted for the time the Texas GOP tried to go after Beto O'Rourke for being cool, Ted Cruz has made a last ditch effort to be relatable. Twitter users chastised him for trying to jump in on the joke. As a lifelong Texas voter I am very disappointed that Ted Cruz would be so flip about a real-life serial killer. Saudi loses swagger on world stage after Khashoggi crisis Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:00 PM PDT Saudi Arabia's crown prince retains an iron grip on power at home, but the growing outcry over journalist Jamal Khashoggi's murder has diminished his stature -- and leverage -- on the global stage, analysts say. Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the 33-year-old heir to the most powerful throne in the Middle East, won international plaudits for his drive to remake the conservative petrostate while he amassed power to a degree unseen by previous rulers. "There's an atmosphere right now where Saudi Arabia, the Saudi government and the prince personally are seen as somewhat radioactive," said Hussein Ibish, a scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. |

U.S., Iran policy depends not just on sanctions but on flexibility Posted: 01 Nov 2018 01:11 PM PDT Washington will reintroduce sanctions on Monday targeting Iran's most important industry - oil - and U.S. officials have indicated a measure of flexibility is needed to ensure global markets are well supplied to keep prices from surging. In abandoning the international 2015 Iran nuclear deal, Trump and his top aides have touted the re-imposition of economic penalties on Iran as part of a "maximum pressure" campaign to force a change in a wide range of Iranian behavior. What Trump wants from Tehran, though, is seen by former officials as a "maximalist" position that includes ending uranium enrichment, giving U.N. inspectors access to all sites across Iran and ceasing support for Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthis in Yemen and the Hamas Palestinian militant group. |
