Six far-Right activists arrested for suspected 'violent' plot against Macron Posted: 06 Nov 2018 05:49 AM PST Six people, linked to the far-Right, were detained on Tuesday in connection with a "violent" plot against Emmanuel Macron, the French President, officials said. The six, who were not identified, were picked up by anti-terrorism units in the eastern French regions of Moselle and Isere and the northern region of Ile-et-Vilaine, officials added. The arrests followed reports of a possible plot involving "violent action" aimed at the president, a source close to the investigation said. Prosecutors have launched an investigation into a "criminal terrorist association", a judicial source said. "This investigation is looking into a plot, vague and ill-defined at this stage, involving violent action against the president of the republic," another official said. In July 2017, a 23-year-old far-right extremist was charged with plotting to assassinate Mr Macron at France's Bastille Day military parade which the French leader attended with Donald Trump, the US president. The man, arrested at home, told investigators he wanted to kill Mr Macron at the July 14 national day parade in Paris, along with "Muslims, Jews, blacks and homosexuals." Three kitchen knives were found in his car and analysis of his computer found that he had conducted internet searches as part of his plot. |

Driver 'huffing' before killing Girl Scouts in Wisconsin hit-and-run Posted: 05 Nov 2018 02:42 PM PST Another girl was critically injured in the collision near Lake Hallie, around 90 miles (145 km) east of Minneapolis. The woman killed was the mother of one of the girls killed, Lake Hallie Police Department said in a statement. The suspect, Colten Treu, sped off after the crash but turned himself in later after police tracked leaking vehicle fluids from his black Ford F-150 pickup to a home about 2 miles (3.2 km) from the incident, police said. |

The ‘Me voting in 2016 vs. Me voting in 2018’ meme captures our collective exhaustion Posted: 05 Nov 2018 01:23 PM PST A lot can change in two years — just look at the meme taking over Twitter feeds in the day before the midterm elections. The meme encourages people to think back to the day of the 2016 presidential election — a time when millions of Americans happily went to the polls to cast their ballots. A time when people did not constantly exist in a fiery rage of terror. To participate, simply type the phrase, "Me voting in 2016 vs me voting in 2018," and choose two drastically different images — one that represents you voting two years ago, and one that represents you voting in Tuesday's midterms. (Hint: The more dramatic the transformation, the better.) To get you in the election and meme-ing spirit, we've rounded up a few of the best: Me voting in 2016 vs me voting in 2018 pic.twitter.com/wM8l1uGvLe — Jennifer Reitman (@JenniferReitman) November 5, 2018 Me before the 2016 election vs me before the 2018 election pic.twitter.com/rG8BOHv1Rt — Lauren Duca (@laurenduca) November 5, 2018 Me voting in 2016 vs. me voting in 2018 pic.twitter.com/dp4qXcO8Hd — Megan Amram (@meganamram) November 5, 2018 Me voting in 2016 vs. Me if we don't vote in 2018 #VoteTuesday pic.twitter.com/HY4WJOuzrP — Whitney Friedlander (@loislane79) November 5, 2018 me voting in 2016 vs me voting in 2018 pic.twitter.com/sAI7foXM1V — Brian Scully is VOTING ON 11/6 (@brianscully) November 5, 2018 Me voting in 2016. Vote, vote, #VOTE TOMORROW, FRIENDS!! You have nothing to lose and *everything* to gain, so get out and #VoteTuesday!!! @ChrisEvans Me voting Me votingin 2014 in 2018 pic.twitter.com/nLNmsQK6mF — Andrew Cook (@AndrewCooker) November 5, 2018 So if you're angry about politics or life in general, by all means, make a meme. But don't forget to channel that rage into something significantly more productive and vote in the Tuesday midterm elections, too. WATCH: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No. It's an inflatable Trump baby flying around London |

US to exempt China, India, Japan from Iran oil sanctions: Pompeo Posted: 05 Nov 2018 06:33 AM PST The United States will exempt China, India and Japan from oil sanctions on Iran, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday, while vowing to be "relentless" in pressuring Tehran. Hours after sweeping sanctions were reimposed following the US withdrawal from a denuclearization deal, Pompeo said eight countries would be at least temporarily exempt from the ban on buying Iranian oil due to special circumstances or so as not to disrupt energy markets. The countries with the waivers will be China, India, Italy, Greece, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey, Pompeo said. |

Scenes from the Texas Senate race Posted: 05 Nov 2018 06:22 AM PST When Beto O'Rourke announced his longshot bid to unseat Texas Sen. Ted Cruz well over a year ago, no one would have predicted the race would emerge as one of the most closely watched elections in the country. In theory, the race is still Cruz's to lose. Texas is a deeply red state that has moved further and further to the right since George W. Bush defeated Ann Richards, the sitting Democratic governor in a stunning upset that put Republicans firmly in control of the Lone Star state 24 years ago. |

U.S. voters give verdict on Trump as control of Congress at stake Posted: 06 Nov 2018 10:15 AM PST The first national elections since Trump captured the White House in a stunning 2016 upset is a referendum on the polarizing president and a test of whether Democrats can turn the energy of the liberal anti-Trump resistance into victories at the ballot box. The Democrats have a good chance of winning at least the U.S. House of Representatives and slimmer hopes of gaining control of the Senate, opinion polls show. If they do take the House, Democrats could launch congressional investigations into aspects of Trump's administration from his tax returns to possible conflicts of interest, challenge his overtures to Saudi Arabia, Russia and North Korea, and oppose him on immigration, tax cuts and trade. |

Amazon drops free-shipping minimum in race for holiday sales Posted: 05 Nov 2018 10:32 AM PST The U.S.-only promotion, effective from Nov. 5, waives the $25 minimum that customers outside Amazon's Prime loyalty club must hit for free shipping. The deal lasts until Amazon can no longer promise items in time for Christmas with free delivery, which typically takes five to eight business days. One analyst, Colin Sebastian of Baird Equity Research, said the offer could shave 5 percent to 6 percent off Amazon's operating profit this quarter. |
Customers rush to buy every doughnut in shop so owner can spend time with ill wife Posted: 06 Nov 2018 03:29 AM PST On a recent visit, regular customer Dawn Caviola noticed John Chhan was staffing the shop without his partner Stella – an anomaly since the pair, who arrived from Cambodia as refugees in the late Seventies, have been selling the fried snack since buying the store in 1990. Mr Chhan told her his wife, 63, had suffered an aneurysm in late September and was recovering at a rehabilitation centre. "I went home and I just couldn't get it out of my head," Ms Caviola told the Orange County Register. |
