Meghan McCain Clashes With ‘View’ Co-Hosts on Tulsi Gabbard: She’s No ‘Russian Stooge’

Posted: 01 Aug 2019 09:32 AM PDT

Meghan McCain Clashes With 'View' Co-Hosts on Tulsi Gabbard: She's No 'Russian Stooge'Meghan McCain rallied to Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard's defense Thursday on The View, as she pushed back against her co-hosts' concerns that the Hawaii congresswoman could be a "Trojan horse" getting a boost from Russian propaganda outlets.During Wednesday night's Democratic primary debate, Gabbard had a brief breakout moment when she called out California Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) on her record as a prosecutor and on criminal justice. Following the debate, however, Harris dissed Gabbard's low poll numbers while criticizing the congresswoman for being an "apologist" for Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad."The Republicans like her, and I think she's a real Trojan horse here because when you look at her record, in particular, she's apologized for it but she was very anti-LGBTQ community," co-host Sunny Hostin said Thursday on The View. "She also has praised Trump for meeting with Kim Jong Un three times.""That's why they like her," liberal host Joy Behar quipped.Hostin, meanwhile, went on to highlight that Gabbard voted for a measure that would prevent Syrian refugees from settling in America, adding that the Democratic lawmaker also has refused to call Assad a war criminal."Per an NBC News report, Russian propaganda machines favor Gabbard," she continued. "When I look at that, I'm concerned she is attacking Harris and I'm concerned that she has any traction."McCain, however, praised Gabbard for getting a "really good blow" on Harris before dismissing the notion that the Hawaii representative is a Trojan horse is "just political posturing."This prompted co-host Ana Navarro to note that she may just be "paranoid" but Gabbard has suddenly received a lot of support from people "who used to dislike her tremendously.""There is a lot of writings in Russia Today and Russian traffic around Tulsi," Navarro stated, referencing the notorious Russian propaganda media arm. "There is something going on. I suspect it's not knowingly by her because I think she's a decent human being who served this country, but I'm paranoid."McCain seemingly took this to mean that any Republican who found Gabbard intriguing was being influenced by Russia, bringing up the fact that her family is sanctioned from traveling to Russia while explaining why she liked Gabbard."Nobody is saying you," Navarro shot back. "I'm talking about other people. Just because I'm making a reference, doesn't mean it's a reference to you."McCain and Navarro went back and forth a bit more, with Navarro pointing out that a GOP congressman ended his friendship with Gabbard over her Assad apologism. "I'm not supporting her," McCain asserted. "I'm just saying she's interesting, and the idea because she got a big hit on Kamala and now she's a 'Russian stooge'—""I'm not saying that!" Navarro exclaimed, leading the rest of the table to argue until, of course, Whoopi Goldberg jumped in to break it up.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Two year deal gets us past the Election. Go for it Republicans, there is always plenty of time to CUT!" Trump wrote Thursday on Twitter.Congressional leadership struck the deal on July 22. The agreement raises the debt ceiling for two years and increases Pentagon spending by $22 billion to $738 billion for the next fiscal year. It increases non-defense spending by $27 billion to $632 billion. The agreement offsets roughly $77 billion through moves like extending customs fees.Several Senate Republicans have openly criticized the deal. Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul came out swinging on the bill Wednesday, saying it "marks the death of the Tea Party movement in America," according to Fox News."Both parties have deserted – have absolutely and utterly deserted – America and show no care and no understanding and no sympathy for the burden of debt they are leaving the taxpayers, the young, the next generation and the future of our country," Paul said on the Senate floor. "The very underpinnings of our country are being eroded and threatened by this debt."Freshman Republican Indiana Sen. Mike Braun called the agreement an "abomination."

Teenager shoots at cars while shouting 'I don't like white people in my hood', police sayA black teenager shouted "I don't like white people in my hood" before chasing four people with a gun and firing multiple shots at them, according to court documents.Cincinnati Police said 18 year old Devonta Allen was filmed firing three shots at the alleged victims, hitting the two vehicles they were in but missing everyone inside.Three of the people involved in the incident were white and the other individual was African-American, according to a criminal complaint. After turning himself in, Mr Allen admitted to the shooting but claimed the alleged victims were armed and fired at him first. However, police said: "This and other statements made by Allen are inconsistent with the videotape evidence and statements from the victims and witnesses."The incident initially started because of a stolen car, according to police.Video of the confrontation has reportedly not been released because it is considered evidence in court.Cincinnati Police said the incident was filmed in the neighbourhood of Kennedy Heights, Ohio, on 25 July.Despite Mr Allen's alleged outburst, local people said they did not think the teenager lived in the neighbourhood."I'd never seen him before and I don't know who he was friends with," a neighbour, who chose to remain anonymous, told Fox 19 news channel.Although no one was hurt, Mr Allen faces four counts of felony assault over the incident and is being held at the Hamilton County jail. His attorney reportedly said in court that the teenager has no adult record but understands how serious the charges are.A judge has ordered him to be held on a $480,000 (£396,000) bond.

F-14 Tomcat: The Jet the Navy Has Never Been Able to Fully Replace

F-14 Tomcat: The Jet the Navy Has Never Been Able to Fully ReplaceThe report notes that both the Super Hornet and the F-35C are severely challenged by new enemy fifth-generation fighter aircraft such as the Russian-built Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA and Chengdu J-20. While the requirement for a carrier-based long-range strike capability is a frequent subject of discussion around Washington, the U.S. Navy's need for improved air superiority capabilities is often neglected. The service has not had a dedicated air-to-air combat aircraft since it retired the Grumman F-14 Tomcat in 2006. But even the Tomcat was adapted into a strike aircraft during its last years in service after the Soviet threat evaporated. Now, as new threats to the carrier emerge and adversaries start to field new fighters that can challenge the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and Lockheed Martin F-35C Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), attention is starting to shift back to this oft-neglected Navy mission—especially in the Western Pacific.(This first appeared in 2016.)(Recommended: Is It Time to Bring Back the Battleships?)

Joe Biden ‘Never Heard’ Julian Castro’s Border Ideas When They Served Under Obama

Posted: 31 Jul 2019 06:40 PM PDT

Joe Biden 'Never Heard' Julian Castro's Border Ideas When They Served Under ObamaJim Watson/AFP/GettyDuring Wednesday night's CNN debate showdown, former Vice President Joe Biden jousted with one of Obama's Cabinet members over the president's legacy. It came when former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro called for ending the criminalization of unauthorized border crossings. Then moderator Don Lemon noted that the Obama administration deported almost 800,000 people in the first two years of his presidency. Would deportation numbers go up under Biden?"Absolutely not," Biden retorted. "I found that the secretary, we sat together in many meetings, I never heard him talk about any of this when he was the secretary."Then protests broke out, and Biden grinned in silence for a few moments until things calmed down."We're in a circumstance where if you say you can just cross the border, what do you say to all of those people around the world who want the same thing, to come to the United States, and make the case that they have to wait in line?" Biden continued. "The fact of the matter is, you should be able to—if you cross the border illegally, you should be able—it's a crime.""People should have to get in line," Biden added. "That's the problem."Castro didn't let the topic drop. "First, Mr. Vice President, it looks like one of us has learned the lessons of the past administration, and one of us hasn't," he said. And to be sure, Castro did criticize the Obama administration's immigration stance during Obama's presidency. Then New York Mayor Bill de Blasio joined the pile-on."I didn't hear whether you tried to stop them or not using your power in the White House," he said. "Did you think it was a good idea or something that needed to be stopped?"Biden then pointed to Obama's move to offer temporary deportation relief—known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA—to undocumented people who came to the U.S. as children. And he snapped at de Blasio for comparing President Trump and Obama. "I think it is absolutely bizarre," the former vice president said. The immigration tiff culminated with New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker taking a final shot at the ex-V.P."First of all, you can't have it both ways," he said. "You invoke President Obama more than anybody in this campaign. You can't do it when it's convenient and dodge it when it's not."Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast hereGet our top stories in your inbox every day. Escape bids by rebel princesses throw spotlight on UAE rightsPrincess Haya, who is battling her husband Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al-Maktoum in a UK court, is the third princess who has sought to escape the Gulf emirate in recent years. Activists say the attempts by Haya and two of Sheikh Mohammed's daughters to escape the United Arab Emirates (UAE) throw a harsh spotlight on the country's rights record, even as it tries to present a glitzy and modern image to the West. In 2000, Sheikha Shamsa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum tried to escape the family's entourage during a holiday in England, but was reportedly picked up two months later and forcibly returned to Dubai.

Trump orders medals to be stripped from prosecutors in war crimes trial

Trump orders medals to be stripped from prosecutors in war crimes trialDonald Trump has demanded medals be revoked from prosecutors in the war crimes trial of a Navy seal who was acquitted of murdering an Iraqi prisoner but convicted of unlawfully posing for photos with his dead body.Mr Trump's announcement was a remarkable rebuke by a US president of his own Navy leadership."The Prosecutors who lost the case against SEAL Eddie Gallagher (who I released from solitary confinement so he could fight his case properly), were ridiculously given a Navy Achievement Medal," Mr Trump wrote on Twitter."Not only did they lose the case, they had difficulty with respect to information that may have been obtained from opposing lawyers and for giving immunity in a totally incompetent fashion."He added: "I have directed the Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer & Chief of Naval Operations John Richardson to immediately withdraw and rescind the awards."Gallagher's case had become a cause célèbre among Republican lawmakers and the conservative media. In March, the US president said that he would order that the chief be moved to less restrictive pretrial confinement.Gallagher was turned in by members of his own platoon, who accused him of stabbing a captured and wounded teenage fighter repeatedly in the neck with a custom hunting knife in 2017. He was also charged with obstruction of justice for threatening to kill his colleagues who reported him.In a court-martial this month, he was found not guilty of first-degree murder in the death of the captive and was also acquitted of accusations that he had fired at unarmed civilians.Gallagher was convicted of only a single charge, related to posing for photographs with the body of the teenage captive. He was sentenced to four months' confinement and a reduction in rank, to special operator first class. The prosecution was troubled before the verdict. The lead prosecutor was removed from the case after being caught attaching tracking software to email messages sent to defence lawyers. Then another Navy seal who was given immunity surprised prosecutors by testifying that he was the one who had killed the captive.New York Times

North Korean soldier crosses heavily fortified border into South in defection bid

Posted: 31 Jul 2019 05:14 PM PDT

North Korean soldier crosses heavily fortified border into South in defection bidA North Korean soldier has crossed the demilitarised zone into South Korea and was in Seoul's custody early on Thursday. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the man was spotted by thermal imaging equipment moving towards the South near the Imjin River after crossing the Military Demarcation Line inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) late on Wednesday night. South Korean troops took him into custody just before midnight, the JCS said, adding the soldier expressed his intention to defect to South Korea. More than 30,000 North Koreans have escaped from the reclusive state to the South since the two were separated by war more than 65 years ago, according to government data, many of them driven by prolonged economic hardship. Pyongyang is under heavy economic sanctions because of its multiple nuclear tests and missile launches, the latest of which came this week. FAQ | North Korean defection It denounces defectors – who are an important source for accounts of the regime's brutal treatment of its citizens – as "human scum". Also on Wednesday, the South Korean military recovered a body near the DMZ suspected to be that of a North Korean civilian, a spokesman for South Korea's defence ministry said on Thursday. Clad in military-type pants and a belt, the body was found in the Imjin River and appeared to have been dead for at least two weeks, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported. Contact between the North and South has been minimal since February, when a second summit between the US and Pyongyang collapsed without an agreement over possible denuclearisation and sanctions relief. South Korea returned three North Koreans on Monday who had crossed the maritime border aboard a fishing vessel. Officials from the South said they thought the fishermen may have wanted to defect but in the end the men chose to return to North Korea. Hundreds of North Koreans make their way to South Korea each year hoping to defect, but unauthorised crossings of the DMZ are rare. The zone is dotted with landmines, fences, guard posts, and other military equipment on both sides of the border. In November 2017, a North Korean soldier was shot multiple times by fellow soldiers as he fled across the border into South Korea, where he was treated by doctors. Another North Korean soldier crossed the border to defect a few weeks later in an incident that led to South Korean guards firing warning shots into North Korea. North and South Korea agreed last year to try to reduce tensions along their border by reducing the number of landmines and guard posts, disarming their guards at a truce village, and imposing a no-fly zone.  The border is the Cold War's last frontier, separating the nuclear-armed North from the democratic and economically advanced South.

Local media reported Ms Hamil was taken to hospital for a medical assessment despite refusing treatment. She was subsequently charged with one count of assault against a police officer and one misdemeanour for resisting arrest.

Elderly woman jailed for feeding stray cats that kept her companyA 79-year-old woman has been sentenced to 10 days in jail for feeding the stray cats she said brought her comfort and companionship.Nancy Segula, of Ohio, began feeding the cats about two years ago when they were left behind after her neighbour moved."There's been about six to eight adult cats and now there's kittens coming over, too," Ms Segula told cleveland.com."I miss my own kitties. They passed away, my husband passed away. I'm lonely. So the cats and kitties outside help me."Garfield Heights Municipal Court magistrate Jeffrey Short handed Ms Segula the 10-day sentence after she received more than $2,000 in fines, Fox 8 Cleveland reported.Under a city ordinance, it is illegal to feed stray dogs and cats in Garfield Heights.Mr Short was covering for Judge Jennifer Weiler on the day of the sentencing. She told the Washington Post she would like to hear all sides of the case with everyone in the room, including the defendant and her lawyer, the prosecutor and a representative from animal control, to decide whether the jail sentence is fair."I'll try to find out what's going on, what's happening and then try and make a decision that makes sense for the circumstances," Ms Weiler said.Ms Segula said she did not know there was a city ordinance against feeding cats, Fox 8 reported."The cats keep coming over to my house," she said. "I just feel bad so then I will give them something to eat."Segula's son, Dave Pawlowski, was in disbelief when his mother told him about the sentence."I'm sure people hear about the things that happen downtown in that jail," Mr Pawlowski told Fox 8. "And they are going to let my 79-year-old mother go there?"Ms Segula was told to appear at the Cuyahoga County Jail on 11 August.
