Zarif went straight into talks with his French counterpart to assess what conditions could lead to a de-escalation of tension between Tehran and Washington, a French official said.

Johnson acknowledges touch and go prospects for Brexit dealU.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson acknowledged Sunday that the prospect of a Brexit deal was "touch and go," as other European Union capitals grasp the problems Britain has with the withdrawal agreement. Speaking on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit, Johnson said that in the last few days, following visits to France and Germany, it has dawned on the EU what "the shape of the problem is for the U.K." Among the key issues is how to prevent the return of a border between EU member Ireland and Britain's Northern Ireland. The comments came after Johnson won U.S. President Donald Trump's approval for his approach in talks to leave the EU after a chummy meeting on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in France.

CNN Hires Fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe as Contributor

CNN Hires Fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe as ContributorFormer FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe is joining CNN as an on-air contributor, the network's media reporter Oliver Darcy announced Friday.McCabe was fired from the FBI in March 2018 after the Department of Justice's inspector general revealed that he'd repeatedly lied under oath to investigators about his role in leaking information on the bureau's Clinton Foundation investigation to the Wall Street Journal. The Inspector General referred the matter to the U.S. attorney's office for investigation and McCabe may still face criminal charges. The 21-year FBI veteran maintains his innocence, arguing that he was misunderstood and tried to correct the record. He filed suit against the Trump administration in U.S. District Court in Washington earlier this month, alleging that his dismissal was "politically motivated and retaliatory."President Trump routinely disparaged McCabe as a political partisan during his time in the administration, often invoking his wife, Jill McCabe, who ran unsuccessfully for state senate in Virginia as a Democrat in 2015.Senator Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) mocked CNN's commitment to honest journalism in response to McCabe's hiring.> The guy who DOJ inspector general found committed federal crimes & is a serial liar? Good work, CNN. Love to see that commitment to serious journalism https://t.co/rHfBB9aLVW> > -- Josh Hawley (@HawleyMO) August 23, 2019The news of McCabe's hiring comes just one day after CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter chastised Fox News for hiring former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders."The Trump White House has a record of misleading the public. All administrations spin. This administration lies consistently, whether it's Sanders, or Spicer, or other White House aides. And it's all led from the top by a president who lies even about the weather and the time of day. That, I think, is why this deserves outrage and backlash," Stelter said.

NJ Cop Sent to Psychiatric Ward After Wife's Slaying Will Finally Face JudgeChip East/ReutersA New Jersey cop accused of breaking into his estranged wife's home, shooting her, and then chasing her into the streets to put a final bullet in her head—all while in uniform—will finally face a judge next week.Newark Lt. John Formisano was arrested a couple of hours after the July 15 slaying. But instead of being brought to court, he was taken to a psychiatric unit after telling investigators that he "blacked out" just before the shooting.According to a police affidavit, the 49-year-old exhibited "suicidal behavior." Five weeks later, he was still in the hospital and had not been arraigned in a court of law—frustrating victim Christie Solaro-Formisano's family."What we feel is we want to have some justice. Any justice can bring a small fraction of peace and closure," her aunt, Joy Mandara, said earlier this week. "Right now, it seems justice is working very slowly and differently from how we expected."Uniformed Cop Who Allegedly Gunned Down Screaming Wife Hasn't Faced JusticeAfter The Daily Beast and local media reported on the delay, the wheels of justice seemed to speed up. Prosecutors confirmed Saturday that there will be a hearing in the case on Wednesday, and that Formisano will appear via video hookup from the psychiatric unit. Before the hearing was scheduled, prosecutors had insisted Formisano was not getting special treatment because he is a police officer."If this defendant was a house painter or a businessman on Wall Street in the same circumstances, it would have been handled in the same way," a spokesman for the Morris County Prosecutor's Office told The Daily Beast earlier in the week.At the time of the shooting, Solaro-Formisano and the Newark lieutenant were in the process of getting a divorce.Formisano told investigators that he went to her home to drop off glasses for their 8-year-old daughter, the older of their two children. The mother of two was home with her boyfriend, and went down to the door."He's got a gun!" Solaro-Formisano yelled, according to the boyfriend. "Call 911!"A nightmarish scene ensued. Formisano allegedly chased his estranged wife through the house, shooting at her, then broke down the bedroom door and shot the boyfriend in the abdomen, thigh, arms, and hand.Bleeding from her wounds, Solaro-Formisano ran outside. She was scrambling up the steps to a neighbor's house when the cop allegedly caught up to her and shot her in the head. The neighbor called 911 and identified the gunman. "He's a Newark cop. He lives on the corner. I saw it. I saw him through my window. He's in his uniform," she told the dispatcher.N.J. He was nabbed in a parking lot.During a police interview, he did not deny his role in the bloodshed."After entering the residence, Formisano stated he began to suspect that [his estranged wife] had a male guest in the bedroom, at which point he 'blacked out,'" the police affidavit said."He stated that he recalls firing his weapon numerous times."Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Trump's Offer to Help N.Y. With Subway Baffles Governor's Office(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump said he is ready to help New York extend the Second Avenue subway in New York City, an announcement that left even state Governor Andrew Cuomo baffled."Looking forward to helping New York City and Governor @andrewcuomo complete the long anticipated, and partially built, Second Avenue Subway," President Donald Trump said in a tweet.Cuomo's office on Saturday said that while the governor is involved in discussions with the president and the Department of Transportation about several infrastructure projects in the city, including the Gateway Tunnel project, the subway and updates at LaGuardia Airport, there have been no concrete steps taken to move forward."The president's tweet suggests good news but we have no specific funding or approval and that is all that is relevant," Communications Director Dani Lever said in a statement. "If an agreement actually materializes, we will provide an update."The Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to extend the subway line for 8.5 miles north, from East 96th Street to 125th Street in east Harlem, and add three underground stations. US school spends $48 million on curved corridors and hiding places to foil mass shooters

Posted: 23 Aug 2019 01:25 PM PDT

US school spends $48 million on curved corridors and hiding places to foil mass shootersA school in the United States has spent $48 million redesigning its buildings with curved corridors, hiding places, and cement barriers in a bid to thwart mass shooters. The project at Fruitport High School in Michigan is aimed at reducing casualties in the event of an attack by hampering the sight lines available to a gunman in corridors. Cement barriers are being installed in hallways for pupils and teachers to take cover. Classroom windows looking on to hallways are being covered with impact-resistant film. Each classroom will also have a corner, called a "shadow zone," that is not visible from the hallway. And school administrators will be able to lock all the doors in the building by pushing a button. Bob Szymoniak, the school superintendent, said: "This building will be the safest, most secure building in the state of Michigan when it opens. "These are going to be design elements that are just naturally part of [school] buildings going into the future." He added: "If I go to Fruitport High School and I want to be an active shooter,  I'm going in knowing I have reduced sight lines. It has reduced his ability to do harm." The changes will be unveiled in December and could lead to other schools across the US taking similar measures. A design firm employed to draw up the safety features has previously worked on prison buildings. Meanwhile, in the school district where the Columbine high school shooting took place in 1999, teachers have been issued with special marker pens. The pens are for writing the time they place a tourniquet on an injured pupil in the event of a shooting. Mr Szymoniak said the decision to go ahead with the project in Michigan was taken after the school shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in 2012, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida last year. US President Donald Trump takes part in a listening session on gun violence with teachers and students in 2018 Credit: AFP Last year, the US had 24 school shootings in which people were killed or injured. Gun control has become a high-profile issue in the 2020 election in the wake of two more mass shootings earlier this month. On consecutive days separate gunmen opened fire in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, leaving more than 30 people dead. In response to those incidents Donald Trump said he would like to see "very meaningful background checks" on people buying guns. But earlier this week Mr Trump said the US already had significantly strict background checks in place, and that many of his supporters are gun owners. Seven in 10 Republicans expressed approval of Mr Trump's handling of gun policy in a new poll.

Trump Clarifies on Trade Regrets: Tariffs Should Be Higher

Trump Clarifies on Trade Regrets: Tariffs Should Be Higher(Bloomberg) -- Terms of Trade is a daily newsletter that untangles a world embroiled in trade wars. Sign up here. Donald Trump acknowledged having second thoughts on escalating the trade war with China -- only for his top spokeswoman to later say he meant he regretted not raising tariffs even more.White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham now says the media misinterpreted Trump's initial remarks. Trump doesn't regret starting a trade war but he does have second thoughts on whether he should have hit the Chinese even harder."The president was asked if he had 'any second thought on escalating the trade war with China.' His answer has been greatly misinterpreted. President Trump responded in the affirmative - because he regrets not raising the tariffs higher," Grisham said in a statement to reporters. The initial remark drew worldwide headlines because Trump is rarely one for second-guessing himself, and instead goes bigger on his ideas in the face of criticism. Grisham's explanation is more in the line with the Trump that the Group of Seven nations know, and who often drives them to distraction. The remarks came as Trump was meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday at the Group of Seven summit. He was asked whether he had "any second thoughts on escalating the trade war" with China, after he announced higher tariffs late Friday."Yeah, sure, why not?" Trump replied. Reporters asked again whether he had second thoughts. "Might as well, might as well," he replied, before reporters asked again. "I have second thoughts about everything," he said. The breezy acknowledgment from the president is the latest in the trade fight between the two largest economies, who continue to ratchet up pressure as warning signs flash on the risk of a global recession.Trump on Friday announced he would hike existing tariffs, applied to about $250 billion in Chinese goods, to 30 percent from 25 percent as of Oct. 1. He also said a new round of tariffs on $300 billion in goods will be taxed at 15 percent, up from 10 percent. The first batch of those tariffs is set to kick in on Sept 1.Trump's move was in response to China's decision to impose retaliatory tariffs on another $75 billion of U.S. goods, including levies on soybeans, pork, cotton and crude oil. Beijing's move takes aim at the heart of Trump's political support -- factories and farms across the Midwest and South.Whether Trump regrets ratcheting up the trade war or not ratcheting it up enough, China is preparing for relations to get much worse, said Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the state-run Global Times newspaper."Regardless of his specific expression each time, we're seriously making preparations for scenario in which China-U.S. trade relations deteriorate further, even much worse than now," he wrote on Twitter after Trump's remarks.Trump has seen his poll numbers sag ahead of his 2020 re-election bid, as consumers sour on his aggressive trade stance against China. Trump has bet his re-election chances on a strong economy, and with fears of recession growing among some economists, has insisted fears of an economic slowdown are overblown.Trump was also asked whether allied nations at the summit in Biarritz, France were pressing him to give up on the trade war. "No, not at all, I haven't heard that at all," he replied. But later, Johnson nudged him to do just that. "Just to register the faint, sheep-like note of our view on the trade war, we're in favor of trade peace on the whole, and dialing it down a beat," Johnson said.(Updates with details of Chinese tariffs in ninth paragraph)To contact the reporters on this story: Josh Wingrove in Biarritz, France at jwingrove4@bloomberg.net;Jennifer Jacobs in Biarritz, France at jjacobs68@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Craig Gordon at cgordon39@bloomberg.net, Flavia Krause-JacksonFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.
