Sanders Hits Back after Co-Sponsor Harris Criticizes Medicare for All

Posted: 20 Aug 2019 07:35 AM PDT

Sanders Hits Back after Co-Sponsor Harris Criticizes Medicare for AllSenator Bernie Sanders hit back at Senator Kamala Harris Monday evening after Harris said at a fundraiser in the Hamptons that she has "not been comfortable" with the Medicare for All plan she cosponsored with Sanders.> I don't go to the Hamptons to raise money from billionaires. If I ever visited there, I would tell them the same thing I have said for the last 30 years: We must pass a Medicare for All system to guarantee affordable health care for all, not just for those who can afford it.> > -- Bernie Sanders (@BernieSanders) August 19, 2019Harris courted wealthy donors in the Hamptons and at Martha's Vineyard over the weekend, assuring them that, "I believe in capitalism, but capitalism is not working for most people.""I think almost every member of the United States Senate who's running for president, and many others, have signed on to a variety of plans in the Senate. And I have done the same," the California Democrat said. "I support Medicare for All. But as you may have noticed, over the course of the many months, I've not been comfortable with Bernie's plan, the Medicare-for-All plan."Harris floundered slightly earlier in her campaign on the question of whether private insurance plans would still be available under her health-care proposal. She originally said private health insurance would be eliminated but has since backtracked, saying that while she is "committed to reining in the private insurance companies," phasing out private insurance "has to happen over a period of time."Sanders is currently polling ahead of Harris but behind the front-runner, former vice president Joe Biden, and Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is in second place.

Flight Logs Reportedly Link Prince Andrew to Alleged Jeffrey Epstein Victim Virginia Roberts

Flight Logs Reportedly Link Prince Andrew to Alleged Jeffrey Epstein Victim Virginia RobertsDuncan McGlynnFlight logs for Jeffrey Epstein's private jet reportedly suggest that Prince Andrew was in the same part of the world as Virginia Roberts Giuffre on at least three occasions.Giuffre alleges she was "given" to Andrew by Epstein three times. The flight logs for Epstein's luxury black Gulfstream jet are private, but the Daily Mail has obtained entries for March and April 2001, which show that Giuffre was flown around the world by Epstein, while Andrew was touring the globe himself, touching down in similar locations.Cross-referencing the flight details with official announcements made by the royal family and press reports from the time reveals a number of coincidences. Giuffre, then known by her maiden name Virginia Roberts, arrived at London Luton airport on March 9 along with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Hours later, a photograph of Andrew with his arm around Giuffre's waist was taken in Maxwell's flat.A month later, on April 9, the duke began an official visit to the U.S. in his capacity as chairman of the trustees of the Outward Bound Trust. The Court Circular, the official record of royal movements, recorded his presence in New York that day.The Mail says that the very same day, Giuffre also flew to New York. She and Epstein left his Palm Beach home to arrive in New York via Atlantic City. Giuffre has previously claimed that it was around Easter time in 2001 that her second encounter with Andrew took place. Easter fell the following Sunday, on April 15.Giuffre has previously said of this alleged encounter: "A beautiful girl called Johanna Sjoberg, who worked for Jeffrey, was sitting on Andrew's knee. Ghislaine guided me over to Andrew and I think he recognized me though I don't know if he remembered my name. We kissed each other on the cheek and Ghislaine placed me on his other knee."Roberts claims she was subsequently told to take Andrew for a massage, which she understood to mean she should have sex with him, which she claims she did.The Mail says the palace was specifically asked if he met Giuffre at this time, but they declined to answer.Giuffre has also said she was forced to have sex with Andrew at Epstein's home in the Caribbean. The flight logs show that Giuffre and Epstein left New York on April 11 for the U.S. Virgin Islands. On Easter Sunday, April 15, Andrew was "in the Bahamas," The Telegraph, reported—quoting a royal courtier who said he was on holiday with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, and their daughters. The Bahamas is a two-hour flight from Epstein's island near St. Thomas. There are no records suggesting that he visited the island. The palace declined to comment.Giuffre previously claimed Andrew was there for one night. She said she flew to the island with Epstein and Maxwell and that "seven Russian girls who didn't speak a word of English" arrived with a modelling agent. The girls were told to pose topless in provocative positions for photographs, "then we were told to assemble in a big cabana… When I walked in, Andrew and Jeffrey were seated in chairs. Jeffrey directed us with hand gestures to start undressing and then we were instructed to start kissing and touching each other."Jeffrey and the prince were laughing and then I stripped and I performed a sex act on Andrew. There was a dinner the next day and then Andrew was gone."The flight logs will heap new pressure on Andrew to explain his relationship with Epstein. On Sunday, the publication of images of Andrew answering the door and waving off guests from Epstein's New York home in December 2010 prompted the duke to issue a public statement, saying: "The Duke of York has been appalled by the recent reports of Jeffrey Epstein's alleged crimes. His Royal Highness deplores the exploitation of any human being and the suggestion he would condone, participate in or encourage any such behaviour is abhorrent."Inconveniently for the palace, however, it is impossible to square the noble sentiments of this statement with the fact that Andrew clearly maintained a close friendship with Epstein after he had served his 18-month prison sentence for soliciting a minor for prostitution. If soliciting a minor for prostitution is not the "exploitation of a human being," then it is hard to know what is. And not only did he go for stroll with Epstein in Central Park, he was apparently more than happy to stay at his house. The images of Andrew inside Epstein's house directly contradicted a statement made to The Daily Beast by the palace that Andrew had not stayed at any of Epstein's homes since the pictures in Central Park were taken.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Iran Warns U.S. Against Seizing Oil Tanker Headed to Greece

Iran Warns U.S. Against Seizing Oil Tanker Headed to Greece(Bloomberg) -- Iran warned the U.S. against apprehending a supertanker carrying the Middle East country's oil and said it couldn't be clear on the ship's ultimate destination, leaving the fate of the vessel uncertain as it sailed into the Mediterranean Sea from Gibraltar, where it had been detained. The tanker, formerly called the Grace 1 and re-named the Adrian Darya 1, was signaling Kalamata, Greece -- at least for now -- with an arrival date of Aug. 26, according to tanker-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg at 5:25 p.m. London time. It had previously been showing an arrival date of Aug. 25.The vessel left Gibraltar Sunday night after being detained there since early July, when British forces seized it on suspicion of carrying oil to Syria in violation of European sanctions. The U.S., which has sanctions against Iran, is seeking to prevent anyone from doing business with the ship.Iranian Crude Tanker Leaves Gibraltar Waters: What Happens Next?U.S. sanctions mean Iran cannot be "very transparent" about the destination of the tanker, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said at a press conference in Helsinki. He said the U.S. is trying to "bully others from purchasing our oil" and that he hopes the release of the vessel will de-escalate tensions in the Persian Gulf.A spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The incident is one of several in recent months that have strained relations between Iran and the West, following the U.S. reinstatement of sanctions on the Islamic Republic last year. Iran has maintained that the ship's original detention on July 4 was unlawful. The Persian Gulf state continues to hold a U.K.-flagged tanker, the Stena Impero. Aggression in the region has threatened shipping in recent months in the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most critical waterway for oil supplies."The U.S. surely can't seize the Iranian tanker and, if it does, it would pose a threat to international maritime security," Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said. Iran warned the U.S. via "diplomatic channels," including Switzerland, against interfering with the tanker, in international waters, Mousavi said at a news conference in Tehran. Swiss diplomats serve as interlocutors between the U.S. and Iran.Destination UnclearIt's not known where the Iranian vessel is ultimately headed. Greek authorities haven't received formal notification that the vessel intends to head to a port in the country, according to a spokesman for Greece's coast guard. Kalamata's port usually serves pleasure craft like sailboats and cruise ships, data compiled by Bloomberg show. The waters off Kalamata could be a possible location for ship-to-ship cargo transfers, according to two vessel brokers without specific information about the tanker's plans. A ship's destination is entered manually into its Automatic Identification System and is picked up by vessel-tracking. The destinations can be altered multiple times on the same journey.Gibraltar rejected an attempt by the U.S. to block the Iranian supertanker, saying that EU regulations don't allow it to seek a court order to detain the vessel.U.S. ComplaintA complaint unsealed in Washington stated that "Oil Tanker 'Grace 1,' all petroleum aboard it and $995,000 are subject to forfeiture," according to a Justice Department statement. The statement alleges a "scheme to unlawfully access the U.S. financial system to support illicit shipments" of oil from Iran to Syria in violation of U.S. sanctions, money laundering and terrorism statutes.Gibraltar last week released the vessel, after the government said Iran had provided assurances that the ship would not sail to a destination sanctioned by the EU. In response, the U.S. said it was gravely disappointed with Britain, and it warned that ports, banks and anyone else who does business with the vessel or its crew might be subject to sanctions, according to two administration officials.(Updates vessel's estimated arrival date in second paragraph, request for comment in fifth. An earlier version of this story included an incorrect spelling for a port official in Kalamata, Greece.)\--With assistance from Serene Cheong, Anthony DiPaola, Alex Longley, Julian Lee, Paul Tugwell, Kati Pohjanpalo and Nick Wadhams. To contact the reporters on this story: Brian Wingfield in London at bwingfield3@bloomberg.net;Arsalan Shahla in Tehran at ashahla@bloomberg.net;Verity Ratcliffe in Dubai at vratcliffe1@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Alaric Nightingale at anightingal1@bloomberg.net, Brian Wingfield, Rachel GrahamFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

In the suit filed by disability and civil rights advocates in U.S. District Court, immigrants said they're placed in isolation as punishment and denied recommended medical treatment and surgery. The problems harm disabled immigrants and threaten anyone in one of Immigration and Customs Enforcement's more than 50,000 detention beds who winds up getting sick or isolated from other detainees, said Monica Porter, staff attorney at Disability Rights Advocates, one of the organizations that filed the suit.

Turkey Fires Kurdish Mayors Ahead of Military Push Into Syria

Posted: 19 Aug 2019 04:57 AM PDT

Turkey Fires Kurdish Mayors Ahead of Military Push Into Syria(Bloomberg) -- Turkey fired the elected mayors of three major Kurdish-dominated cities in the country's southeast and detained more than 400 people in a crackdown as it prepares to push a Syrian Kurdish militia away from its border. The mayors of Diyarbakir, Mardin and Van were removed Monday for their alleged ties to the PKK, an autonomy-seeking Kurdish group classified as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the European Union. Police used water cannons to disperse hundreds of Kurdish protesters outside the mayor's office in Diyarbakir, according to footage by Arti TV.While Turkish authorities have in the past evicted Kurdish officials at times of heightened political tension at home, this time the moves were seen as linked to a long-promised military operation in northern Syria.President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to carve out a frontier buffer zone that will be off-limits to the Syrian YPG militia, which authorities say has links to the PKK. The seizure of three Turkish municipalities with a population of about 3.7 million people where the PKK traditionally enjoys strong backing aims to prevent any support for the militants. But it also renewed accusations that Erdogan and his nationalist allies are damaging Turkey's democracy by attacking the pro-Kurdish HDP after it swept back to office in ballots in the southeast and helped Turkey's main opposition party to win mayoral races in the capital and the nation's commercial hub."All political parties and society should react to this coup against the will of the people," Garo Paylan, an HDP lawmaker, said on Twitter. "If you remain silent, then the next in line could be Ankara and Istanbul."Erdogan warned before local elections in March that his government would not hesitate to replace HDP mayors if they are deemed to be linked to Kurdish militants. The HDP has faced a broad clampdown since it won enough votes to enter parliament in 2015. Since then, the government has jailed hundreds of Kurdish politicians and seized about 100 municipalities in the southeast. The HDP denies it's influenced by the PKK and blames the group's armed rebellion on a history of repressive policies toward Kurds. All three mayors were elected with a majority of votes on March 31. Diyarbakir Mayor Adnan Selcuk Mizrakli got 63% of the provincial vote, while Mardin Mayor Ahmet Turk had 56% and Van Mayor Bedia Ozgokce Ertan received 54% support.Officials have said they expect a headquarters for the expected joint operation by Turkey and the U.S., which supported the Syrian YPG in the fight against Islamic State, to be up and running this week.(Updates with context in third paragraph.)To contact the reporters on this story: Selcan Hacaoglu in Ankara at shacaoglu@bloomberg.net;Taylan Bilgic in Istanbul at tbilgic2@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Onur Ant at oant@bloomberg.net, Mark Williams, Alaa ShahineFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

Kamala Says She’s Uncomfortable With Bernie’s Health-Care Plan Two Years After Co-Sponsoring It

Posted: 19 Aug 2019 09:05 AM PDT

Kamala Says She's Uncomfortable With Bernie's Health-Care Plan Two Years After Co-Sponsoring ItChip Somodevilla/GettyAt a fundraiser in the Hamptons this weekend, Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) told wealthy donors she has "not been comfortable" with the Medicare-for-All proposal pushed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), one of her leading rivals in the primary."I think almost every member of the United States Senate who's running for president and many others, have signed on to a variety of plans in the Senate. And I have done the same," Harris said, according to remarks provided by her campaign. "[A]ll of them are good ideas, which is why I support them. And I support Medicare for All. But as you may have noticed, over the course of the many months, I've not been comfortable with Bernie's plan, the Medicare for all plan."The comments are the latest reflection of the turbulence that the California Democrat has encountered while navigating the politics of health care reform. Just two years ago, Harris was comfortable enough with Sanders' bill to become the first senator to co-sponsor it. And back then, she exhibited no discomfort in doing so. "This is about understanding, again, that health care should be a right, not a privilege. And it's also about being smart," Harris said in August 2017. "So it's not only about what is morally and ethically right," Harris argued. "It also makes sense from a fiscal standpoint, or if you want to talk about it as a return on investment for taxpayers."At the time, Harris' announcement was hailed as a shrewd reading of the direction of the Democratic Party on health care—one that would boost the senator's progressive cred ahead of a possible White House run. And as recently as April of this year, Harris' office sent a press release saying she had joined Sanders to formally introduce the Medicare-for-All Act of 2019. "Medicare for All finally makes sure every American has affordable, comprehensive health care," she said. That the senator now has reservations about the legislation was not, her campaign argued, a matter of political convenience but, rather, the end product of having worked on the issue more. "There's a difference between signing onto a good idea and running on a plan," said Harris campaign spokesman Ian Sams. He noted that Sanders is running on Medicare-for-All but was nevertheless a sponsor of a bill from Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) to establish a public option. "Senator Harris was hearing from lots of voters real concerns, specifically about proactively abolishing private insurance, the four-year transition, middle-class tax hikes, and so she came up with her own plan to adjust for those that, frankly, is better than his," said Sams. Sanders did co-sponsor the Schatz legislation in 2017. But the senator is not a co-sponsor of the most recent bill. An aide explained that he took his name off the legislation because "he believes at this point we need a Medicare for All system. It's not like he opposes [a public option]. It's whether he is putting his name and stamp on it." Dems Perplexed by Kamala's 10-Year Health-Care PushHarris' formal health care plan differs from the Sanders' model in a variety of ways. It aims to phase in Medicare-for-All over the course of a decade—as opposed to four years—and allow private insurers to offer plans through Medicare if they comply with strict government rules. Her plan also eschews some of the revenue-raising measures proposed by Sanders, by declining to hike middle-class taxes in order to fund health care coverage. The Sanders campaign has slammed Harris' plan as a contrived half-measure and one that would leave full implementation to her presidential successor.
