Teenage Isil bride from Germany captured in Mosul

Posted: 18 Jul 2017 04:08 AM PDT

Teenage Isil bride from Germany captured in MosulA 16-year-old German Islamic State bride, who reportedly joined the jihadist group after being radicalised online, has been captured by Iraqi forces in the ruins of Mosul.  Linda Wenzel, from the small town of Pulsnitz, near Dresden, was discovered by troops with a group of 20 other suspected foreign female Isil members in a tunnel under the Old City on Thursday. Pictures shared on social media show the girl being escorted by security forces, appearing pale and unveiled but wearing a colourful scarf around her neck.  Social media images alleging to show an Isil sniper believed to be 16-year-old German Linda W Credit: Twitter She appears pale, afraid and covered in dust, unveiled but wearing a colourful scarf around her neck.  She was initially mistaken for a kidnapped Yazidi girl because of her lack of Arabic. Linda was reported missing from her home a year ago, where she had been living with her mother, Katharina, and step-father, Thomas.  She grew up in a Protestant family, and had not showed any interest in religion until a few months before her disappearance. In the spring of 2016 she told her parents for the first time that she was interested in Islam. Friends in Pulsnitz say she converted to Islam around this time and was radicalised online in chat rooms. She started learning Arabic, taking the Koran to school, wearing conservative clothing and becoming fascinated with Islam before her disappearance.  Police believe she had fallen in love with a Muslim man she met online who persuaded her to move to Syria to join him.   Image posted by Vian Dakhil, Yazidi member of Iraq's council of representatives Credit: Twitter She disappeared last July after telling her parents she wanted to stay the weekend at a friend's house.  She travelled to Istanbul posing as her mother Katharina, and then down to Turkey's border with Syria, where she crossed with the help of an Islamist group aligned with Isil.  The jihadists then handed her over to an Isil fighter who is believed to have groomed her over the internet and convinced her to travel to the group's so-called caliphate.  Linda is thought to have made it to Mosul before the Iraqi army launched the offensive to retake the city in October.  Iraqi forces image allegedly showing an Isil sniper believed to be 16-year-old German Linda Wentzel Credit: Iraqi army Until six months before she fled to join Isil, she had never even travelled by train alone.  "I am devastated by the fact that she was apparently completely brainwashed and persuaded to leave the country by someone and that she managed to hide it from me," Mrs Wenzel said last July. When she searched her room, Mrs Wenzel found an Islamic prayer mat and a tablet computer with a second Facebook account they did not know about on it.  On this second account Linda was in touch with people in the Middle East and shared messages such as "Pray, the end is approaching".  Linda Wentzel, aged 16, orignally from Pulsnitz near Dresden in Germany Credit: ENTERPRISE NEWS AND PICTURES  "At the moment the priority is to determine whether this is Linda W or not. The police will undertake all necessary investigations," Lorenz Haase, chief prosecutor and spokesman for the Dresden prosecutor's office, told the Telegraph. "If it is confirmed, we would reopen criminal proceedings against her which were set aside. We had set aside the proceedings on the grounds we did not know her whereabouts and she is a minor. She is understood to have been handed over to American troops stationed in Iraq for questioning.  Four other German women were also reportedly discovered last week in a tunnel system built by Isil.  A little girl named Amina was found by Iraqi Army soldiers when they heard her cries from the rubble.  Credit: Rex Iraqi forces say they discovered weapons and suicide belts at the site, presumably to be used for assaults on soldiers.  They were part of a group of 20 female fighters, including Russian, Turkish, Canadian and Chechen, apprehended in the last remaining pocket of Isil territory in Mosul.  It is not clear whether Linda and the other women will be held in Iraq or deported back to Germany to face trial. A senior Iraqi judge told the Telegraph earlier this year that foreign members of Isil would be tried in Iraqi courts, however as she is considered a minor they may decide to extradite her. Only a handful of European Isil members under 18 year of age have ever been detained, most of whom after voluntarily returning home.

No, a fart didn't cause an American Airlines flight to evacuate all its passengers

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 07:24 AM PDT

No, a fart didn't cause an American Airlines flight to evacuate all its passengersIn today's "Not The Onion" news, an American Airlines flight supposedly had to evacuate all its passengers after a person "passed gas," causing violent episodes of nausea and headaches.  Except that this isn't true. SEE ALSO: Sorry everyone, but that shocking Amelia Earhart photo has been debunked — twice The story, which originally appeared on local WNCN-TV, quotes an unidentified spokesperson with Raleigh-Durham International Airport as saying that all passengers were taken off the plane after it landed at around 4 p.m. The incident allegedly started when passengers on the flight "became ill with nausea and headaches" spurred by a foul-smelling odor in the cabin. However, American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein categorically denied this report. Feinstein told Mashable that "the flight was not evacuated, and the story is not true".  He said the plane had a odor issue, but that was due to a mechanical fault, not "passed gas." "We did have an aircraft from Charlotte to RDU this afternoon, that landed at 2:19 p.m. ET, and arrived the gate at 2:21 p.m. ET, that is currently out of service for an actual mechanical issue – and odor in the cabin. But it is not due to 'passed gas' as mentioned," Feinstein said. A spokesman at the airport, Andrew Sawyer, also confirmed that the plane was not evacuated, and said the whole incident was about a passenger who had to receive medical help after a foul smell: "A medical call for someone overcome by an odor was received after the plane deplaned normally," he said.  The story was picked up by many news outlets, including NBC, The Daily Telegraph, and Fox News: Passengers on an American Air flight to Raleigh were forced to evacuate after someone 'passed gas,' officials said https://t.co/JUysbmlVyu pic.twitter.com/A5fqxfJ1np — NBC Charlotte (@wcnc) July 17, 2017 American Airlines flight evacuated in Raleigh, NC due to epic fart. https://t.co/pk3ekxPzsm@BigfootStacy @BAMedia45 @Grimerica @RT_com — FRINGE Media (@FreidrichDean) July 17, 2017 Image: google/screenshot WATCH: How 'The Walking Dead' Season 2 diverged from the comics

Small U.S. towns brace for rare solar eclipse, and crowds, in AugustBy Ann Saphir DRIGGS, Idaho (Reuters) - Hyrum Johnson, mayor of the tiny city of Driggs, Idaho, expects some craziness in his one-stoplight town next month when the moon passes in front of the sun for the first total solar eclipse in the lower 48 U.S. states since 1979. The town of 1,600 people in Teton County, just west of the jagged peaks of the Rocky Mountains Teton Range, is getting poised to receive as many as 100,000 visitors on Aug. 21 for the celestial event, said Johnson, who was both excited and worried. Driggs is one of hundreds of towns and cities along a 70-mile arc, stretching from Oregon to South Carolina, that are in the direct path of the moon's shadow.

OPEC thinks the electric car revolution is upon us, too

Posted: 17 Jul 2017 10:24 AM PDT

OPEC thinks the electric car revolution is upon us, tooA couple of weeks ago, we wrote about a new report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance, which suggested that the electric car revolution may happen far more quickly than anyone expects. In 2016, BNEF's team of analysts thought that by 2040, 35 percent of the world's new cars would run on electricity. Now, they think it'll be closer to 54 percent.  Some of you probably found that figure far too optimistic, but you know who didn't? The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, better known as OPEC. According to BNEF, OPEC now believes that sales of electric vehicles will be five times stronger than previously estimated. Just last year, OPEC predicted that by 2040, 46 million electric cars would roam Planet Earth's roads. This year, that number has been revised upward to 266 million. And OPEC's not entirely alone. Private oil companies like BP and Exxon are keeping an eye on EVs, too. Though their outlooks are dimmer than OPEC's, both companies project that the world's fleet of EVs will surpass the 100 million mark sometime between 2035 and 2040. As with BNEF's own analysts, those revised numbers stem largely from the rapidly dropping price of lithium ion batteries.  If those projections bear out, by 2040, demand for oil could plummet by eight million barrels a day. That's about what the U.S. currently produces in a day, or roughly the output of Iran and Iraq combined. The big question, of course, is whether the projections are accurate. And even if they are, what effect might they have? Though the numbers seem huge and the revised estimates appear significant, a drop in oil production of eight million barrels wouldn't devastate the petroleum industry. Companies and governments currently churn out about 96 million barrels of oil each day. Cutting eight million barrels from that total would be a noticeable drop, and it might be enough to cause stagnation in the oil industry, but it wouldn't be a death blow by any means.  Furthermore, OPEC's projections related to electric vehicles are definitely at odds with BNEF's. OPEC believes that by 2040, electric cars will make up just 12 percent of the world's auto fleet. BNEF believes the figure will be nearly three times higher, at 33 percent.

"Slightly over one third of panelists reports that their firms have experienced some difficulty in hiring," NABE survey chair Emily Kolinski said in a statement.

House Republican 2018 budget ties tax reform to spending cutsBy David Morgan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives released a fiscal 2018 budget plan on Tuesday that could pose a major new political test for President Donald Trump's legislative agenda by combining tax reform with controversial spending cuts. The $4 trillion blueprint would allow an overhaul of the U.S. tax code to pass Congress without support from Democrats, along with a partial repeal of the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law and $203 billion in savings from mandatory federal programs including food stamps over the next decade. "In past years the budget has only been a vision but now with a Republican Congress and a Republican White House this budget is a plan for action," House Budget Committee Chair Diane Black said at a news conference.
