Poor little dog had to be rescued from lagoon 2 times by police officers Posted: 06 Jul 2017 09:41 PM PDT When a little dog found itself stuck in a lagoon on Wednesday, two brave police officers came to the rescue and pulled the pup out. That, however, was just the beginning of the ordeal. "As soon as the dog's feet hit the ground, without so much as a thank you, it ran off towards the tot lot where several families were playing," the Milwaukee Police Department wrote on Facebook. "Minutes later, there was another splash. The dog jumped back into the water." SEE ALSO: Get the perfect photo of your dog every single time with this gadget This time, the dog was too far out to be reached by a snare or net, so the officers called the fire department for a boat. "While waiting for the boat, they were trying to coax the dog back to shore. After a few minutes the officers could see the animal was starting to struggle in the thick weeds and muck. That's when Officer Spingola said he had to go in." As he was "swimming towards the dog, the dog was struggling to keep afloat. When he reached him, the dog was wrapped up in the weeds, tangled in fishing line and had a hook and bobber hanging from him." As you can see from the video above, the story has a happy ending. Now all they need is for the owner to claim the "happy and healthy" brown poodle mix. WATCH: Teach Your Dog to Text a Selfie |

UNESCO puts Hebron on endangered heritage list, outraging Israel Posted: 07 Jul 2017 04:26 AM PDT UNESCO on Friday declared the Old City of Hebron an endangered world heritage site, sparking outrage from Israel in a new spat at the international body. Meeting in Poland, the UN's cultural arm voted 12 to three -- with six abstentions -- to give heritage status to Hebron's Old City in the occupied West Bank, which is home to more than 200,000 Palestinians and a few hundred Israeli settlers. "Just inscribed on @UNESCO #WorldHeritage List & World Heritage in Danger List: Hebron/Al-Khalil Old Town," the organisation said on its official Twitter feed. |
Hobby Lobby to forfeit ancient Iraqi artifacts in settlement with U.S. DOJ Posted: 07 Jul 2017 02:19 PM PDT (The 5th July story refiles to reflect that the artifacts were not intended for the Museum of the Bible in paragraphs 1 and 4) By Dan Whitcomb LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Arts and crafts retailer Hobby Lobby has agreed to forfeit thousands of illegally smuggled ancient Middle Eastern artifacts obtained from antiquities dealers, the company and U.S. officials said on Wednesday. The forfeiture will include some 5,500 artifacts purchased by Hobby Lobby Inc that originated from the region of modern-day Iraq and were shipped under false labels, as well as an additional $3 million to settle the civil charges, the Department of Justice said in a statement. "The protection of cultural heritage is a mission that (Homeland Security Investigations) and its partner U.S. Customs and Border Protection take very seriously as we recognize that while some may put a price on these artifacts, the people of Iraq consider them priceless," Angel Melendez, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New York, said in the statement. |

Jerk bear crushes camper's tent and gets her arrested on outstanding warrant Posted: 06 Jul 2017 04:49 PM PDT A bear crashed a camper's tent which ultimately led to her arrest. A woman camping in Centennial Park in Anchorage, Alaska, was rudely awakened by a bear on Tuesday. Police received a phone call from a concerned citizen at approximately 7:30 a.m., claiming that a bear had crashed a tent, possibly with a person inside, the Associated Press reports. SEE ALSO: Angry bear charging a car is a good reminder to leave bears alone When the cops showed up, the bear was gone, and no one responded when they called out for anyone inside the downed tent. However, when police poked a sleeping bag inside the tent, 58-year-old Christine Chalp popped her head out. Chalp claims that she played dead in order to evade the bear. Unfortunately, a bear nearly eating your face is not a good enough excuse to avoid a ticket — or arrest. Police issued Chalp a citation for feeding game after they discovered food and trash around her campsite, which is illegal because it attracts large game such as moose. Oh, yeah, and bears. While issuing the citation, the police discovered that Chalp had a warrant out for her arrest on a misdemeanor failure-to-appear for disorderly conduct, so she was arrested. So basically, this bear blew up her spot which ultimately led to a citation and an arrest. What a jerk. WATCH: 'Golden Girls' starring 4 best dog friends will be your favorite fluffy remake |

Merkel rolls her eyes at Putin Posted: 07 Jul 2017 02:06 PM PDT While the focus at the G-20 Summit has been on the first meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, an encounter between Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel also raised eyebrows, literally. At one point, Merkel appeared to roll her eyes at Putin. It's unclear what the two world leaders were discussing that prompted the reaction. |
Posted: 08 Jul 2017 06:32 AM PDT As America woke to the news that Donald Trump had dispatched his eldest daughter, Ivanka, to fill in for him at a G20 meeting with world leaders, the response of people ran from outraged to stunned, and then back to outraged. "Why the hell is Ivanka Trump sitting in for daddy at G20 meetings?! What are her qualifications? Nicholas Kristoff, a columnist for the New York Times, said: "Ivanka fills in for her dad beside Xi Jinping. |

Trump administration sued by 18 U.S. states over student loan relief Posted: 06 Jul 2017 02:22 PM PDT By Lisa Lambert WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than one-third of U.S. states on Thursday sued the U.S. Education Department and Secretary Betsy DeVos over the recent suspension of rules that would have swiftly canceled the student-loan debt of people defrauded by Corinthian Colleges Inc and other for-profit schools. Last month DeVos pressed pause on the rules, due to take effect on July 1, saying they needed to be reset. Massachusetts, 17 other states and the District of Columbia said in a filing in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. the department broke federal law in announcing the delay with limited public notice and opportunity to comment. |

If you have several credit cards, you could work on paying off the smallest debts first, even if others have high interest rates. It's a psychological approach rather than the most mathematically efficient method, admits Joseph Carpenito, a financial advisor with Raymond James Financial Services who is based out of Boca Raton, Florida. |
Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning arrives in Hong Kong Posted: 06 Jul 2017 09:37 PM PDT Xi's trip marked 20 years since Hong Kong was handed back to China by Britain, and analysts said his visit left little doubt that Beijing viewed the city as a destabilising hotbed of unacceptable political dissent. President Xi also inspected 20 squads of troops last Friday at the city's biggest military parade in the past two decades, where helicopters and armoured vehicles were displayed. |
