Tourists scream as hot air balloon lands in alligator-infested pond near Disney World Posted: 04 Jul 2017 01:48 PM PDT Seven people are thanking their lucky stars to be alive after a relaxing hot air balloon trip crashed into an alligator-infested pond near Disney World. In a video capturing the aftermath of the crash, people can be seen screaming as the wicker basket sinks further and further into murky waters in Florida. The pilot later said that they weren't able to land the balloon on land because of shifting winds that made it impossible to move the balloon to safer areas. |

Minnesota judge backs jurors who acquitted officer of black motorist's death Posted: 04 Jul 2017 04:58 PM PDT Ramsey County District Judge William Leary told the jurors in a letter that, notwithstanding widespread criticism, they applied the law fairly when they acquitted officer Jeronimo Yanez last month for the killing of Philando Castile during a traffic stop last July, the Star Tribune said. "As we discussed when we met shortly after the verdict, I cannot convey my own opinions as to guilt or acquittal, but your verdict was fully supported by a fair interpretation of the evidence and the law you were obligated to apply," the newspaper quoted Leary as saying. |
UAE says still awaiting Qatar response to Arab demands Posted: 04 Jul 2017 03:04 AM PDT United Arab Emirates foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan said on Tuesday that Arab countries boycotting Qatar over its alleged support for terrorism were still awaiting a response to their demands via mediator Kuwait. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt are pressing Qatar to shut its Al Jazeera news TV station and scale back relations with Iran, Saudi Arabia's arch-rival in the Gulf region, part of 13 demands they want Doha to fulfill to end the crisis. |
Fourth of July: 9 of the most stunning sights in US National Parks Posted: 04 Jul 2017 02:59 AM PDT Google is taking time to celebrate the stunning and sublime beauty of America's national parks, on the country's birthday. It was on this day 241 years ago that the US famously adopted the Declaration of Independence, and the United States of America was born. Google said that it was celebrating the two events together because the National Parks Service is hailed as "America's Best Idea", and that they were such a perfect place to celebrate the country's birthday. |

Exclusive: Philippines' Duterte proposed deal to end city siege, then backed out Posted: 05 Jul 2017 04:35 AM PDT By Martin Petty MARAWI CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was preparing to make a deal with Islamic State-inspired militants in the days after they laid siege to a southern city, but aborted the plan without explanation, an intermediary involved in the process said. Agakhan Sharief, a prominent Muslim leader, told Reuters that after a band of Islamist fighters overran parts of Marawi City on May 23 and took hundreds of people hostage, he was approached by a senior Duterte aide to use his connections with the Maute militant group's leaders to start back-channel talks. Two other Marawi sources familiar with the matter confirmed the president had worked behind the scenes to hold talks with the Maute brothers, Omarkhayam and Abdullah. |

How Chris Christie's lofty ambitions became beached after he sold his soul to Donald Trump Posted: 04 Jul 2017 07:06 AM PDT When that didn't work out – Christie dropped out the following day after a poor showing – the New Jersey governor quickly threw crucial support behind Donald Trump, a candidate he had once had harsh words for. While Trump frequently mocked his sidekick – there were reports Christie was sometimes dispatched to collect Trump's burgers – by the summer of 2016, his name was said to be on a shortlist of people being considered for vice president. Most powerfully, Christie is now remembered as the man burned by Trump, and who has nothing to show for it other than a beach chair, and a approval rating among the people of New Jersey of just 15 per cent. It is, by some measure, the worst of any of the country's 50 governors. |

Qatar responds to demands after deadline extended Posted: 03 Jul 2017 03:31 PM PDT Qatar on Monday responded to a list of demands from Saudi Arabia and its allies after they agreed to give a defiant Doha another 48 hours to address their grievances. Details of the response were not immediately available, but a Gulf official told AFP that Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani had delivered it during a short visit to Kuwait, which is acting as a mediator in the crisis. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt had announced in the early hours of Monday they were pushing back a deadline for Qatar to agree to a list of 13 demands they issued on June 22. |

"Whenever you feel that future is threatened, whenever those values of liberty and justice for all that drew us here seem under assault, you need to speak up and speak out," California Senator Kamala Harris said at one of the naturalisation events in Los Angeles in an apparent reference to Mr Trump's push back on immigration. The flood began last Friday when the 60 meter (yard) high wall of a reservoir at a phosphate factory partially collapsed, letting loose 100,000 cubic meters (26.4 million gallons) of highly acidic wastewater in the Ashalim riverbed. One section of the Ashalim riverbed is made up of narrow canyons, popular for hiking, but no one was around when the wastewater first gushed through. |

Russia may deploy military in Syrian buffer zones within weeks Posted: 04 Jul 2017 10:08 AM PDT Russia may deploy its military to police the borders of planned de-escalation zones in Syria within two to three weeks after finalizing an agreement with Turkey and Iran, Russian negotiator Alexander Lavrentyev said on Tuesday. Moscow hopes to sign the final documents with Ankara and Tehran on Wednesday, he told reporters after a series of meetings in the Kazakh capital, Astana. Russia and Iran, which back President Bashar Assad's government, and Turkey, which supports some of the rebels, agreed in principle to create four "de-escalation zones" in Syria in a previous round of talks in May, but put off a planned June meeting where they were supposed to work out the details. |

Analyst Morris Brown said the Long March 5 uses liquefied gases that are less stable than the sort of propellants used in other rockets. He did not say the propellants used in other rockets were solid. |
