Two U.S. bombers hold firing drills with South Korean forces Posted: 07 Jul 2017 10:56 PM PDT Two U.S. supersonic bombers conducted live-fire drills on Saturday in South Korea in a show of force following North Korea's test-launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the South's military said. The pair of B-1B Lancer strategic bombers flew from a U.S. base on Guam and were joined by U.S. and South Korean jet fighters to conduct the simulated destruction of an enemy ballistic missile launcher and underground facilities, the South's air force said. North Korea announced on Tuesday it successfully test-launched an ICBM, saying the missile was capable of carrying a large and heavy nuclear warhead. |

The G20 proves it. Because of Donald Trump, the world no longer looks to America for leadership Posted: 08 Jul 2017 10:38 AM PDT Donald Trump paused briefly as he and the First Lady reached the top of the steps of Air Force One, gave a quick wave, and was on his way. Now, on issues ranging from trade to climate change, on how to deal with problems such as Ukraine, the US has turned its back on the considered consensus. The US was utterly alone on the issue of climate change, where the 19 other members agreed to push ahead with the Paris Accord to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the US refused. |

Erdogan warns Syrian Kurds of Turkey's right to defence Posted: 08 Jul 2017 11:09 AM PDT President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday said Turkey would never allow a Kurdish state in Syria near its border, and warned that if threatened, Ankara would not hesitate to use its right to self-defence. "We will never remain silent or unresponsive to the backing and arming of terrorist groups, and the formation of terror islets right next to our border," Erdogan said in a speech at the closing session of the G20 summit in Hamburg. Ankara considers the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) fighting in Syria to be a terrorist group and the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has waged an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984. |
Distorted aerial photographs offer a unique way to see the vibrancy of New York City Posted: 09 Jul 2017 02:00 AM PDT These incredible, mind-bending aerial images offer a completely different way to view the vibrancy of New York City. Shot from above, some of the distorted images make the Big Apple appear like a planet, while others, photographed directly downward, make skyscrapers look like something out of an abstract artwork. |

Egypt raid kills IS suspects after deadly Sinai attack Posted: 08 Jul 2017 12:16 PM PDT Egyptian police said they killed 14 alleged Islamic State group members Saturday in a raid on a training camp, a day after the jihadists conducted a deadly attack on soldiers. Funerals were held across the country for at least 21 soldiers killed in Friday's attack in the north of the Sinai Peninsula, one of deadliest against the military in years. The interior ministry said police officers raided a desert training camp in the eastern province of Ismailiya, killing the 14 alleged militants. |

Exclusive: U.S. plans to test THAAD missile defenses as N.Korea tensions mount Posted: 07 Jul 2017 03:42 PM PDT By Phil Stewart WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States plans to carry out a new test of its THAAD missile defense system against an intermediate-range ballistic missile in the coming days, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Friday, as tensions with North Korea climb. Despite being planned months ago, the U.S. missile defense test will gain significance in the wake of North Korea's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on July 4 that has heightened concerns about the threat from Pyongyang. |
35 migrants feared drowned off Libya: coastguard Posted: 08 Jul 2017 06:26 AM PDT Thirty-five migrants, including seven children, were feared drowned after their inflatable boat sank on Saturday off the Libyan coast, the coastguard said. Eighty-five migrants, including 18 women, were rescued with the help of fishermen who alerted the coastguard, said Issa al-Zarrouk, a coastguard official in Garabulli, 60 kilometres (40 miles) east of Tripoli. Navy spokesman Ayoub Kacem said the boat sank six nautical miles northwest of Garabulli, and 10 fishing boats took part in the rescue. |

Shepherds mauled in Romania bear attack Posted: 08 Jul 2017 01:02 PM PDT Two shepherds were seriously injured in a bear attack Saturday in Romania's remote Carpathian mountains, reigniting debate over a government decision to suspend an annual culling programme. Romania is home to around 60 percent of Europe's brown bears -- some 6,000, a quarter of which roam the mountains around Harghita. There have been seven bear attacks there in 2017 alone, prompting anger among locals. |

At least 23 Egyptian soldiers were killed when suicide car bombs tore through two military checkpoints in North Sinai on Friday, an attack claimed by Islamic State. U.S. isolated on climate at summit of world leaders Posted: 08 Jul 2017 11:53 AM PDT By Paul Carrel and Noah Barkin HAMBURG (Reuters) - Leaders from the world's leading economies broke with U.S. President Donald Trump on climate policy at a G20 summit on Saturday, in a rare public admission of disagreement and blow to multilateral cooperation. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, keen to show off her skills as a mediator two months before a German election, achieved her primary goal at the meeting in Hamburg, convincing her fellow leaders to support a single communique with pledges on trade, finance, energy and Africa. Last month Trump announced he was pulling the United States out of a landmark international climate accord clinched two years ago in Paris. |

Creationist allowed to chisel away at Grand Canyon under Trump's new religious freedom order Posted: 07 Jul 2017 11:08 AM PDT An Australian creationist has received permission to collect rocks from the Grand Canyon in an attempt to prove the occurance of a great biblical flood - thanks in part a recent executive order from Donald Trump. The National Parks service recently approved an application from Andrew Snelling, a certified geologist and evangelical Christian, which will allow him to collect "50 or 60" fist-sized rocks from the Grand Canyon. Mr Snelling said the samples will serve his work of "investigating geological phenomena from the perspective of one who believes in the truth of the Old and the New Testaments". |

UK foreign minister urges Arab states to end Qatar boycott Posted: 08 Jul 2017 06:50 AM PDT British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday urged Arab states to end their Qatar boycott, downplaying the odds of a military escalation in the worst crisis to grip the Gulf in years. Johnson met with his Kuwaiti counterpart Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah on Saturday and was scheduled to visit Qatar later in the day. "What people need to see is de-escalation and progress towards tackling the funding of terrorism in the region, and progress toward an end to this blockade," Johnson said, voicing support for Kuwait as a mediator in the crisis. |
Yet another wireless carrier has launched a good unlimited plan Posted: 07 Jul 2017 01:20 PM PDT "Unlimited" data plans are all the rage this year. After T-Mobile debuted its mostly-unlimited One plan to a ton of splash last year, Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T all followed suit, and we're now at the point where every major network has some kind of unlimited plan available. But if you're a shrewd little shopper, you will hopefully have realized by now that there's far more than four places to buy your wireless service. Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are third-party companies that resell the Big Four's service, often for cheaper. Credo Wireless, one of the more intriguing MVNOs, has just rolled out an unlimited plan that's worth a look.
Credo runs on Verizon's network, which means that you're guaranteed the most consistent (and often fastest) network coverage that money can buy. The unlimited plan starts at $85 per month for one line, but falls way down to $40 per line if you have four lines on your account. The pricing means it's a little more expensive than Verizon's own Unlimited plan for a single individual, but it offers worthwhile savings for a bigger group. The terms of the contract are more or less the same as Verizon. It's Unlimited in name only, as exceeding 20GB of data per month will see your speeds throttled. Verizon does something similar with its Unlimited plan, but the throttling limit is 22GB, and Verizon will only throttle your data if the network is congested. Credo's biggest claim to fame is that it's an "ethical" network that takes overt political stances. Every time a user logs onto its network, it donates to a variety of charities like Planned Parenthood or Oxfam. The current strapline on its website is that it's "the only carrier fighting Trump's hate," which should give you an idea of where it falls on the political spectrum. Overall, the plan isn't a slam-dunk compared to Verizon, but it is a slightly cheaper option compared to Verizon's own unlimited plan. |
French suspect held for planning attack with Belgian pair Posted: 09 Jul 2017 03:34 AM PDT A 42-year-old French national appeared in court Sunday on suspicion of plotting an attack with multiple weapons alongside two Belgian brothers who were charged in Brussels this week, judicial sources said. The suspect is believed to be connected to Akim and Khalid Saouti, two brothers who were charged in Brussels on Wednesday with belonging to a "terrorist group" and were believed to be planning an attack with a large stash of weapons including Kalashnikov rifles. The pair, who were arrested the previous night in the Brussels suburb of Anderlecht, are brothers of convicted jihadist Said Saouti, a member of the Kamikaze Riders, a notorious bikers' club based in Brussels. |
U.S. appeals court denies Hawaii bid to narrow Trump travel ban Posted: 07 Jul 2017 04:39 PM PDT By Dan Levine SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday rejected Hawaii's request to issue an emergency order blocking parts of President Donald Trump's temporary travel ban while the state sought clarification over what groups of people would be barred from travel. The U.S. Supreme Court last month let the ban on travel from six Muslim-majority countries go forward with a limited scope, saying it could not apply to anyone with a credible "bona fide relationship" with a U.S. person or entity. The Trump administration then decided that spouses, parents, children, fiancés and siblings would be exempt from the ban, while grandparents and other family members traveling from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen would be barred. |

Big pup spooked by extremely tiny kitten while trying to make friends Posted: 07 Jul 2017 10:17 AM PDT Contrary to popular belief, cats and dogs can actually be great friends. They don't really have much in common, but hey, opposites attract. That being said, the tricky relationship between this large doggo and this tiny kitten needs some time to develop. Boundaries need to be set, rules need to be followed, and hierarchy needs to be established. Instagram user tipthevelvet posted this video of her new tiny kitten, Oliver, getting acquainted with her Great Dane, Ronan. Oliver quickly shows his new friend who's boss by giving Ronan an itty-bitty boop on the nose. And by the look on Ronan's face, he understands who's in charge here. He gives the scrappy kitten some serious nervous side-eye before walking away, realizing that they have some progress to make before they become BFFs. We're confident that Oliver and Ronan will warm up to each other soon, though. We bet they'll be cuddling — with no swatting — in no time. 122 countries adopt global treaty banning nuclear weapons Posted: 07 Jul 2017 01:11 PM PDT A global treaty banning nuclear weapons was adopted at the United Nations on Friday despite opposition from nuclear powers Britain, France and the United States which said it disregards the reality of dealing with international security threats such as North Korea. The treaty was adopted by a vote of 122 in favor with one country -- NATO member The Netherlands -- voting against, while Singapore abstained. |
Android’s biggest issue is as prominent in 2017 as it’s ever been Posted: 07 Jul 2017 11:03 AM PDT If you thought that this might be the year that Google finally solved its Android fragmentation problem, I have some bad news for you. As of July 6th, Android 7.0 (the most recent version of the OS) is running on 11.5% of Android devices. That's 4.4% higher than May 2nd, but don't forget that Android 7.0 first began rolling out to Nexus devices in August 2016. Quite a wait for double-digit adoption.
Breaking down the numbers a bit further, Google's Android Dashboard shows that 10.6% of Android users have upgraded to Android 7.0, but that only 0.9% have reached Android 7.1, which rolled out last October. To put those figures into perspective, Apple claims that 86% of iOS users are running iOS 10 as of July 5th. iOS 10 was released in September, a few weeks after Android 7.0. With just weeks left until the launch of Android 8.0, nearly a third of Android users are still running Android Lollipop, which encompasses versions 5.0 and 5.1. While Android 6.0 Marshmallow has finally surpassed Lollipop's market share, 30.1% of Android users are still working with an OS from 2014. Meanwhile, 17.1% of Android users are still running 4.4 KitKat and 9.5% (or greater) are using phones with versions between 2.3.3 Gingerbread and 4.3 Jelly Bean. Nearly 60% of Android users have yet to upgrade to an operating system that rolled out after October 2015. That's not a good sign. Google has promised that Android 8.0 will "make it easier, faster and less costly for manufacturers to update devices to a new version of Android," but we've heard that line before. We remain cautiously optimistic that Android's distribution numbers will become more respectable in the near future. |
At G20 summit, Trump pledges $639 million in aid to four countries Posted: 08 Jul 2017 11:29 AM PDT By Andrea Shalal HAMBURG (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday promised $639 million in aid to feed people left starving because of drought and conflict in Somalia, South Sudan, Nigeria and Yemen. Trump's pledge came during a working session of the G20 summit of world leaders in Hamburg, providing a "godsend" to the United Nations' World Food Programme, the group's executive director, David Beasley, told Reuters on the sidelines of the meeting. "We're facing the worst humanitarian crisis since World War Two," said Beasley, a Republican and former South Carolina governor who was nominated by Trump to head the U.N. agency fighting hunger worldwide. |
