Starbucks to close 8,000 branches for afternoon of racial bias training after discrimination row

Posted: 17 Apr 2018 11:13 AM PDT

Starbucks to close 8,000 branches for afternoon of racial bias training after discrimination row  Starbucks will close more than 8,000 US stores for an afternoon of racial bias training after the arrest of two black men in a Philadelphia branch triggered claims of discrimination.  Almost 175,000 workers will go through training on May 29, the company announced on Tuesday after footage of the arrest made headlines.  Kevin Johnson, the Starbucks CEO, said the move was just "one step" in the company's "journey" to improve and understand "what we did wrong".  Footage of the arrest taken by other customers had gone viral in recent days and prompted a slew of negative headlines for the company.  The two black men had been waiting for a friend when they were asked to leave by staff. There are reports one or both of the men asked to use the restroom without buying anything.  An employee called the police before the men's friend arrived and argued with officers  as they applied handcuffs, saying: "You can't discriminate." Other customers are heard criticising the police.  The pair were arrested and held for eight hours before being released with no charge, according to their attorney.  The incident triggered protests, with critics holding posters saying "shame on you Starbucks" and "too little too latté".  Protestors demonstrate inside a Center City Starbucks, where two black men were arrested, in Philadelphia Credit: REUTERS/Mark Makela Mr Johnson gave interviews saying he wanted to "personally apologise" over the arrests and also met the two men to say sorry face-to-face.  He told ABC News: "The circumstances surrounding the incident and the outcome in our store on Thursday were reprehensible... they were wrong." On Tuesday, Mr Johnson said in a statement: "I've spent the last few days in Philadelphia with my leadership team listening to the community, learning what we did wrong and the steps we need to take to fix it.  Starbucks's US stores will close on May 29 Credit: AP Photo/Lisa Poole "While this is not limited to Starbucks, we're committed to being a part of the solution. Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities." The training on May 29 will "address implicit bias, promote conscious inclusion, prevent discrimination and ensure everyone inside a Starbucks store feels safe and welcome".  Starbucks has more than 8,000 company-owned stores in the United States which are all closing.

Is the F-35 Now the Ultimate Drone Killer?

Posted: 17 Apr 2018 06:30 AM PDT

Is the F-35 Now the Ultimate Drone Killer? An F-35 used sensors, on-board computers and targeting systems to find, track and destroy two airborne drones at once. Previous test data and observers have confirmed the F-35 identified and targeted the drone with its mission systems sensors, passed the target 'track' information to the missile, enabled the pilot to verify targeting information using the high off-boresight capability of the helmet mounted display and launched the AIM-9X from the aircraft to engage the target drone, a statement from the F-35 JPO said. When a single F-35 used sensors, on-board computers and targeting systems to find, track and destroy two airborne drones at the same time with air-to-air missiles, the emerging 5th Gen fighter transitioned into a new era for offensive attack missions.
