Fighters start to quit last rebel pocket of Syria's Ghouta

Posted: 02 Apr 2018 12:36 PM PDT

Fighters start to quit last rebel pocket of Syria's GhoutaSyria's regime drew closer to taking full control of Eastern Ghouta on Monday as state media reported that fighters began evacuating the last rebel-held pocket of the former opposition stronghold near Damascus. A Russian-brokered deal had been reported on Sunday for fighters with Jaish al-Islam, the largest rebel group still in Ghouta, to leave the enclave's main town of Douma. The retaking of Eastern Ghouta would mark a major milestone in President Bashar al-Assad's efforts to regain control of territory seized by rebel factions during Syria's seven-year civil war.

Saudi crown prince says Israel has 'right to homeland' in sign of normalising ties

Saudi crown prince says Israel has 'right to homeland' in sign of normalising ties Saudi Arabia's crown prince has said Israelis have a right to a homeland alongside Palestinians, in a sign the kingdom was open to the possibility of normalising ties. Mohammed bin Salman, the 32-year-old heir to the Saudi throne, said the Jewish people were entitled to live peacefully on their own land when asked if he believes they have a right to a nation-state. "I believe the Palestinians and the Israelis have the right to have their own land," he said. "But we have to have a peace agreement to assure the stability for everyone and to have normal relations." Saudi Arabia - birthplace of Islam and home to its holiest shrines - does not recognise Israel. It has maintained for years that establishing any diplomatic relations hinges on Israeli withdrawal from Arab lands captured in the 1967 Middle East war, territory Palestinians seek for a future state. Crown Prince and Defense Minister of Saudi Arabia Mohammad bin Salman in Egypt Credit: Handout The crown prince also said that while the ultra-conservative country has "religious concerns" about the holy mosque in Jerusalem and the rights of Palestinians, it has no objection "against any other people". "There are a lot of interests we share with Israel and if there is peace, there would be a lot of interest between Israel and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries", Prince Mohammed told The Atlantic magazine in an interview as he tours the US. Profile | Mohammad bin Salman (MBS) The countries have grown closer under the crown prince, bonding over their mutual distrust of Iran. Saudi Arabia opened its airspace for the first time to a commercial flight to Israel last month, a hugely symbolic move that was greeted with much cheer in the Jewish state after a decades-long ban. King Salman reiterated his support for the Palestinians in a phone conversation on Monday night with President Donald Trump, in rare comments made by the ageing monarch. The king also emphasised the need to advance the peace process, speaking after Israeli security forces killed 16 Palestinians last week during a demonstration along the Israel-Gaza border People react as they evacuate deaf Palestinian Tahreer Abu Sabala, 17, who was shot and wounded in the head during clashes with Israeli troops, at Israel-Gaza border Credit: Reuters The Trump administration has pinned its hopes on Saudi Arabia as a key interlocutor in the peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians. While Riyadh does not officially acknowledge Israel's existence, it has in the past talked about recognising Israel in the context of a two-state solution with the Palestinians. About | The two-state solution But no such senior Saudi official is known to have previously accepted that Israel has a "right" to any land beyond the practical need to secure a lasting deal. Saudi publicly condemned Mr Trump's move to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel last year, but Arab officials told the Telegraph that the kingdom was privately pushing Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, to accept a less than favourable deal. Reports suggested the deal would see the Palestinians lose their claim to east Jerusalem as its capital. In a major Saudi shakeup last year, Prince Mohammed pushed aside his older and more experienced cousin to become first in line to his father's throne, setting himself up to control Saudi policy for decades to come. The Saudis are working aggressively to change perceptions. They have cast themselves as essential partners against Islamist extremist groups and worked to improve women's rights in the kingdom. Abroad, he has escalated a war of words with Tehran, describing Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, in The Atlantic interview as an "evil guy" who "makes Hitler look good."

US Supreme Court nixes $655 million jury award against the PLOThe US Supreme Court Monday rejected a bid to make the Palestine Liberation Organization pay $655 million in damages to victims of six attacks in Israel. The court's decision aligned with the view of President Donald Trump's administration, which in this case saw no reason for the high court to intervene despite strains in US relations with the PLO. The court upheld a New York appeals court ruling that in 2016 found that the US courts lacked jurisdiction over attacks in Israel, even though Americans were among the dead and wounded.

Elephants loose on Spanish motorway after circus lorry overturns One elephant died and several others ended up loose on a Spanish motorway on Monday after the circus lorry they were in overturned. Police had to close the A30 in Pozo Canada near Albacete south east of Madrid after the extraordinary crash. Motorists filmed the animals strolling towards waste ground and feeding by the side of the road. The dead animal was removed from a ditch by the side of the motorway where its body ended up following the drama around 4pm. Motorists in Spain were treated to the extraordinary sight of elephants grazing by the side of the road after a circus lorry carrying at least five of the animals overturned Credit: ASA Police released pictures of the elephants appearing to feed on grass by crash barriers before being led to a safer area. They revealed, in a tweet: "The A30 has been closed because a lorry has overturned. Elephants are loose on the tarmac. "The motorway has been closed around the Pozo Canada area heading towards Murcia." The accident is believed to have happened after the HGV they were in overtook another vehicle and the driver lost control as he headed back into the slow lane. One of the elephants - pictured lying in a ditch by the roadside after the crash - died, but the other elephants - and the lorry driver - survived unharmed Credit: ASA Spain's Road Safety Authority the DGT confirmed one of the elephants had died in the incident. Four other animals escaped the crash with their lives along with the driver of the vehicle. Two of the four-legged survivors are said to have suffered injuries although it was not immediately clear how serious they were. DGT spokesman Gregorio Serrano said: "The elephants injured in the accident that has happened in Albacete are being assisted and removed. "Of the five animals one has died and two have been injured. Shortly the A30 will be reopened." The crash happened on the A30 near the city of Albacete Credit: ASA One stunned motorist, who filmed the animals wandering around on the tarmac seconds after the accident, said in a running commentary over his home-made video: "Accident on the A30 motorway near Albacete. "A circus lorry has overturned. Four elephants are loose and one looks in a very bad way. I'm not sure if it's dead or not." Silvia Barquero, the president of Spanish animal welfare political party PACMA, said the animals belonged to the Gottani Circus, which has performed several shows in the area over Easter. She tweeted: "The lorry that has overturned was carrying Circo Gottani elephants. Show them more kindness. We treat animals like slaves. Enough of circuses that use animals." There was no immediate response from the circus owners. Civil Guard officers will now send a report on the accident to a local investigating judge who will be tasked with a routine probe into the incident.

Last eastern Ghouta rebels poised to surrender- Syrian state mediaBy Suleiman Al-Khalidi AMMAN (Reuters) - The group in control of the last rebel bastion near Damascus appeared on Sunday to have agreed a deal for its fighters to make peace with the government or quit the eastern Ghouta enclave, Syrian state media said. Jaish al Islam, most of whose members are drawn from the area, has been defending the city of Douma against a months-long onslaught by government forces. If confirmed, its surrender or departure for rebel-held areas in northwest Syria would herald an end to large-scale conflict in the enclave.

British and American soldiers killed in Syria were on mission to capture Isil member, Pentagon says

Posted: 02 Apr 2018 12:41 PM PDT

British and American soldiers killed in Syria were on mission to capture Isil member, Pentagon saysA British and an American soldier killed in Syria last week were on a secret mission to kill or capture a member of the Islamic State of Iraq in the Levant (Isil), the Pentagon has confirmed. Master Sgt. Jonathan Dunbar, from Austin, Texas, and Sgt. Matt Tonroe, a SAS sniper from Manchester, died in an improvised explosive devise blast in Manbij, Syria. The pair was killed and five other troops wounded on March 30. Few details have been released about the circumstances, but Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway, a Pentagon spokesman, said on Monday that they died in the top secret mission. The US military has not said whether the IED was in a building, a vehicle or buried in the road. The troops were out of their vehicles at the time of the explosion, according to a US official. There is also no word on whether the target was found and captured or killed. One indicator of the sensitivity of the mission was that Dunbar was identified publicly by the Army only as being "assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, N.C." That specific language has been used in the past when troops killed in action have actually been part of the Army's elite Delta Force, a counterterrorism unit that is not publicly identified. CNN reported that Dunbar was assigned to Delta. Delta Force and the Naval Special Warfare Development Group - popularly known as Seal Team Six - are among the so-called Tier One units that specialise in high-risk counterterrorism and hostage rescue missions that are rarely acknowledged. Special operations forces have been in the Manbij area recently looking for high-value Isil operatives that may have fled to the area, the US official said. There are currently around 2,000 US troops in Syria, who mostly work with local allies fighting Isil. On Thursday President Donald Trump said that the US would "be coming out of Syria, like, very soon". It later emerged that he had suspended the funds for a $200 million stabilisation project in the country. His remarks caught military leaders off guard, and were strongly criticised by Lindsey Graham, Republican senator for South Carolina. Mr Graham warned that pulling out of Syria now, with Isil on the run, would be "the single worst decision" that the president could make.

Two massive crystal meth seizures on Thai border

Two massive crystal meth seizures on Thai borderThai authorities have seized two massive hauls of crystal methamphetamine near border regions this week, officials said Tuesday, highlighting the kingdom's role as a pipeline for drugs flooding through Southeast Asia. Early Tuesday authorities found some 788 kilogrammes (1,737 pounds) of crystal meth -- a high-purity form of the stimulant -- in an abandoned pick-up truck in northern Chiang Rai province, the heart of the notorious 'Golden Triangle' drug producing zone. More than nine million meth tablets were also found in fertiliser bags inside the vehicle, which lay some 100 metres away from the banks of the Mekong river that divides Thailand and Laos.

The_Mueller is Reddit's hottest place for all your spiciest Robert Mueller memes

Posted: 02 Apr 2018 01:45 PM PDT

The_Mueller is Reddit's hottest place for all your spiciest Robert Mueller memesYou don't have to look too hard on Reddit to find anti-Trump subreddits, but somewhere in between r/TrumpForPrison and r/EnoughTrumpSpam, a new sub has risen up to firmly plant a wry tongue in the cheek of the current administration.  The_Mueller is a subreddit completely dedicated to spreading memes and disseminating news related to special counsel Robert Mueller III's investigation exploring possible ties between Russia and Trump's 2016 campaign and possible obstruction of justice from the president. It now has around 75,000 subscribers and growing.  The_Mueller is a place where Redditors come to gleefully celebrate what they see as Trump's looming downfall at the hands of a former FBI director who has become an unexpected celebrity for the left. After all, Mueller is a Republican, initially appointed to his FBI position by George W. Bush. But that's not going stop anti-Trumpers from anti-Trumpin'.  Dragonsandman, who started the subreddit last summer, explained its origin to Mashable, "It was a spur of the moment decision from a comment thread in /r/Politics." The Redditor added, "A few people expressed a desire for a meme subreddit based on the investigation and put forward a few names. I chose /r/The_Mueller, because it mirrored The_Donald." The upstart sub does seem like a mirror of r/The_Donald, the massive alt right platform full of praise for Trump and trolling for "snowflake libs." That subreddit continues to be extremely active with almost 600,000 subscribers.  SEE ALSO: March For Our Lives crowd estimates trump Trump's inauguration The_Mueller takes a page from their right-leaning nemesis and regularly posts links that bask in Mueller fandom.  For example, here is the subreddit's most popular post: But community members are all too happy to form their own jokes at the expense of the president and his cadre of seemingly corrupt cabinet members. The sub has also become a place for news about the investigation. Daily news links are included in amongst the bushel of memes. And the subscribers love it. "The community response has been overwhelmingly positive," moderators of The_Mueller said. "r/The_Mueller is a place to both unwind and get excited for what's in store in the investigation. But also a place to hold up a mirror to both sides of the aisle. Don't forget, Robert Mueller is, besides a patriot, a Republican himself." Of course, the internet is a dark place, full of terrors, and partisanship rears it's ugly, orange head regularly. Rivalry between subreddits is nothing new, but The_Mueller has become something of a target.  "The antagonism from r/The_Donald is showing every day, but we expect our community to respond in good fashion," the moderators said. "While we have to acknowledge that the trolling and gaslighting is mostly coming from r/The_Donald users rather than others across the political spectrum, we think we can maintain a healthy community that allows multiple viewpoints to be seen, including criticism of the moderators." It's a odd world we live in which an appointed special counsel investigating a president's wrong doing is heralded with memes and upvotes. But politics in the Trump era has become a whirling dervish of cultural crazy glue, sticking to almost everything as it almost everything revolves around it. This modern moment makes The_Mueller as yet another unique, and fascinating, example of how political expression has evolved. WATCH: Scientist Ivanka's accessories are Photoshopped separately
