Supporters rally for Jakarta's jailed Christian governor Posted: 09 May 2017 08:40 PM PDT Supporters of Jakarta's Christian governor staged a colourful rally outside city hall Wednesday a day after he was jailed for blasphemy, in a case that has damaged Indonesia's image as a bastion of tolerant Islam. "Let's fight for justice," said acting governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat, who was Purnama's deputy and has taken over his powers, to cheers from the crowd. Purnama was jailed Tuesday for two years after being found guilty of blasphemy against Islam, a shock decision after prosecutors recommended only probation. |
U.S.-backed Syria militias say Tabqa, dam captured from Islamic State Posted: 10 May 2017 03:59 PM PDT By Ellen Francis BEIRUT (Reuters) - U.S.-backed Syrian militias said they fully seized the town of Tabqa and Syria's largest dam from Islamic State on Wednesday, a major objective as they prepare to launch an assault on Raqqa, the jihadists' biggest urban stronghold. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, have been battling the militant group for weeks in Tabqa, some 40 km (25 miles) west of Raqqa, along the Euphrates River. With air strikes and special forces from the U.S.-led coalition, the SDF are advancing on Raqqa to ultimately take the city, which is also the Islamic State's base of operations in Syria. |
Dakota Access pipeline has first leak before it's fully operational Posted: 10 May 2017 02:56 PM PDT The Dakota Access pipeline inspired huge demonstrations in 2016. The Dakota Access pipeline has suffered its first leak, outraging indigenous groups who have long warned that the project poses a threat to the environment. The $3.8bn oil pipeline, which sparked international protests last year and is not yet fully operational, spilled 84 gallons of crude oil at a South Dakota pump station, according to government regulators. |

Microsoft just released an emergency patch to fix a devastating new vulnerability Posted: 09 May 2017 01:04 PM PDT For many Windows users, Microsoft's own built-in malware protections are the only thing standing between them and the many bad actors pushing for control of their systems. Today, the company is issuing an emergency update to fix a new, extremely scary vulnerability in the operating system's anti-malware software that not only has the power to bypass those protections, but to effectively hand over complete control of a user's computer to a hacker.
The exploit, which was discovered and reported to Microsoft by Google security researcher Tavis Ormandy, requires a "specially crafted file," which can be sent via email or distributed on compromised websites. The file, when scanned by the Windows malware protection software utilizing the Microsoft Malware Prevention Engine, allows the attacker to gain full control of the system. Once the exploit is successfully executed, the malware allows the installation or deletion of programs, the ability to create new user accounts with full permissions, and gain access to private information wherever it might be stored. What's particularly scary about this vulnerability is that the file uses Microsoft's own anti-malware protections to break into the system, and because Windows is extremely thorough about scanning any and all content a user comes in contact with, even online, the malware file doesn't even need to be opened for it to work its devious magic. In fact, even getting the file in an email — whether you open the email or view the attachment or not is irrelevant — is enough to open your computer to attackers. Microsoft's patch is already being rolled out, and the company says that Windows' own built-in updates will close the gaping hole behind the scenes without you even realizing it, though it can take up 48 hours for all Windows machines to be free of this frightening oversight. |

For one Chinese city, new 'Silk Road' leaves old problems unsolved Posted: 09 May 2017 04:08 PM PDT By Sue-Lin Wong HUNCHUN, China (Reuters) - In August, 2014, planners in the northeastern Chinese city of Hunchun argued in state media that it should be included in the "One Belt, One Road" project, Beijing's vision laid out the previous year of a new Silk Road across Asia to Europe. In 2015, the official Xinhua news agency ran stories about how Hunchun was accelerating its "OBOR" plans, and early in 2016, China's cabinet released a list of Chinese cities included in "OBOR": Hunchun was on the map. The challenge of defining exactly what OBOR means will come to the fore later this month, when heads of state and senior officials from around the world gather in Beijing for the first major summit dedicated to the project. |
White House says James Comey committed 'atrocities' as FBI Director Posted: 10 May 2017 11:20 AM PDT The White House has said James Comey committed "atrocities" as FBI Director during a conference with Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Ms Huckabee Sanders said Donald Trump had considered firing director James Comey since "day one," but made his final decision after receiving written and verbal feedback from Justice Department officials. "I think also having a letter like the one he received and having that conversation that outlined the basic, just, atrocities in circumventing the chain of command in the Department of Justice ... When he saw that, he had to speak up on that action, and I think that was the final catalyst," Ms Huckabee Sanders said. |

The franchise's Facebook page was said to have shared an image released by Israeli police which appears to show Palestinian hunger-strike leader Marwan Barghouti secretly breaking his fast. Posted: 10 May 2017 02:32 PM PDT Vermont lawmakers on Wednesday approved a measure to legalise recreational use of marijuana, which if not vetoed by the governor would make the state the ninth to legalise the drug and the first to do so by legislation rather than ballot initiative. The U.S. state's House of Representatives voted 79-66 for the measure, which was attached to a bill increasing penalties for the possession and sale of the opioid drug fentanyl. The measure, which would take effect in July 2018 and allow adults 21 and over to buy and use the drug, was passed by the state Senate last week in a 20-9 vote. |

Saturn's moon Titan looks like a pretty chill place in new photos Posted: 10 May 2017 02:40 PM PDT Titan, Saturn's largest moon, captures the imagination. The distant world plays host to lakes of liquid methane and ethane that look like they could be a nice spot for an alien yachting expedition, dunes of hydrocarbons, and clouds that sometimes rain methane down onto the surface of the world, feeding its lakes. Long story short, Titan is everything you could wish for in an alien world, and new photos taken by the Saturn-exploring Cassini spacecraft put that on stark display. SEE ALSO: NASA just schooled actor Milo Ventimiglia about space because Twitter The new images — snapped by Cassini on May 7 — show bright, fluffy streaks of methane clouds in the world's atmosphere. Titan seen by Cassini.Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science InstituteThis isn't the first time these types of clouds have been seen by Cassini. Scientists have been keeping an eye on these types of features for about a year, though these new images are particularly gorgeous. Titan is actually thought to be one of the best places in the solar system to hunt for alien life. Scientists think it's possible that Titan actually has a huge subsurface ocean beneath its crust which might be perfect for microbes to thrive. During this ring dive orbit, Cassini also took some images of the huge planet and its rings looking moody in black and white. Saturn and its rings.Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science InstituteCassini spacecraft has been exploring Saturn and its many moons on humanity's behalf for more than 10 years, but its mission will come to an end in September when the spacecraft makes its planned death plunge into Saturn's thick atmosphere. Mission controllers working with Cassini decided to force it to fall into Saturn's atmosphere in order to protect the planet's moons like Titan and Enceladus, which also seems to have a subsurface ocean, from contamination. James Corden mocks Trump's James Comey decision in comical rant Posted: 10 May 2017 07:30 AM PDT Last night on the Late Late Show, James Corden weighed in on Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey. SEE ALSO: James Corden and Stephen Curry singing along to 'Frozen' is a joy to behold The exact reason for Comey's demise might be unclear to the rest of the world, but Corden seems to have the whole thing figured out. In the video above, Corden lists the different speculations about Comey's dismissal. The White House says he was fired for how he handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Others say it was because of how he dealt with the Russia investigation. Corden, however, has a much simpler explanation. "Comey is being fired because Donald Trump is crazy. He a crazy man. He be crazy." Corden then drags Sean Spicer for general incompetence and delivers a round-up of the latest in Republican politics. |

Hungary, Slovakia challenge quotas on asylum-seekers at top EU court Posted: 10 May 2017 08:00 AM PDT By Gabriela Baczynska LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) - Hungary and Slovakia told the European Union's top court on Wednesday that sharing out asylum-seekers among member states under a quota system was unlawful, clashing with Germany, France and others in a dispute that threatens to tear the bloc apart. Some 1.6 million migrants and refugees have crossed the Mediterranean and entered the EU since in 2014, mostly fleeing conflicts or poverty in the Middle East and Africa. The EU proposed in 2015 redistributing just 120,000 of them to help relieve pressure on frontline states Italy and Greece but ran into fierce resistance from ex-communist countries. |
After the White House, Obama 'captive to selfies' Posted: 09 May 2017 09:42 AM PDT Former US president Barack Obama shared Tuesday his relief at no longer being leader of the Free World -- but joked he is now "captive to selfies" whenever he is out. "The hardest thing about being the president of the US is it is unique in its isolation," he told an audience of 3,000 who had paid 650-850 euros ($700-925) to see him Milan, Italy. Wearing a navy blue suit and shirt without a tie, Obama took questions in a relaxed session led by Sam Kass, his former White House chef and senior advisor on nutrition policy. |
