Nigeria's Buhari absent again from cabinet meeting Posted: 03 May 2017 04:29 AM PDT Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari failed to show up for a weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday, despite assurances from his wife that his health was not a cause for concern. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo chaired the meeting in the absence of the 74-year-old Buhari, who has now missed the last three gatherings of senior ministers and advisors. Buhari has been under growing pressure to disclose his state of health since he returned from the British capital in early March after nearly two months away. |

Ryan told reporters Tuesday morning. Republic Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the majority whip, read aloud a letter from a constituent with a preexisting condition who said Obamacare did not help him. |

US tests nuclear-capable missile with the range to strike North Korea Posted: 03 May 2017 04:36 AM PDT The US has test-fired a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile from a site in California, the second such launch in a week, amid rising tensions with North Korea. The unarmed Minuteman 3 missile has a range of around 8,000 miles, putting it within striking distance of Pyongyang. It blasted off just after midnight from Vandenberg Air Force Base, 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles, and delivered a single projectile to a target approximately 4,200 miles away at Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, US Air Force Global Strike Command said. |
This is the stupidest thing on Microsoft’s new laptop Posted: 02 May 2017 12:01 PM PDT Microsoft has a new laptop. It's called the Surface Laptop, and it appears to do many things well. It's basically a spiritual successor to the MacBook Air, but more quirky, because it comes in various colors and has fabric on the keyboard. Unfortunately, Microsoft took its rather good-looking laptop out behind the woodshed and murdered it with one particularly dumb choice: there's no USB-C port.
Microsoft chose to go with its proprietary magnetic charger, a USB-A port, a miniDisplayPort, and a headphone jack. Apple was lambasted (and rightly so) for the lack of ports on its new MacBook, but at least it had an explanation: USB-C is the future, therefore we're just going to stick only USB-C ports on our futuristic laptop. Microsoft's approach seems to just be to give a stiff middle finger to common sense. USB-C is the future. It's not the only port you need right now -- chances are you still have a whole bunch of things that use USB-A -- but it is a fantastic standard for the future. The port is tiny, you can connect it both ways, and it's incredibly powerful. You can use it to charge device, you can use it to hook up a laptop to a monitor and charge it with just one cable. You can use the same cable that you use to charge your phone to charge your laptop. Even better, using USB-C for charging gives people choice over chargers. I've been using a tiny USB-C charger for my laptop for months now, and it really does feel like the future. Remember when cellphones used to have proprietary chargers, and then everyone switched to microUSB and the world became a better place? That's what's about to happen with laptops, but Microsoft apparently doesn't want to be a part of it. During the education-focused event, Microsoft said that the Surface Laptop would be "just as good on graduation day as day one." As USB-C infiltrates portable hard drives, projector hookups, flash drives and phone cables, Surface Laptop-toting students are going to be left behind. That's the opposite of what Microsoft wants, and I just don't understand. |
More than 50 miners trapped in explosion in Iran, some feared dead Posted: 03 May 2017 05:13 AM PDT (Reuters) - More than 50 miners were trapped after a huge explosion in a coal mine in northern Iran on Wednesday, and some were feared to have died, state media reported. The reports said more than a dozen injured people had been transferred to hospital after the blast at 12:45 p.m. local time in the Zemestanyurt coal mine in Golestan province. State news agency IRNA quoted a local official as saying some of the trapped miners may have died in the explosion. |
Historians react to Trump’s Civil War comments: ‘That’s entirely wrong in every respect’ Posted: 01 May 2017 11:13 AM PDT Historians Monday valiantly tried, and mostly failed, to understand and interpret President Trump's remarks about President Andrew Jackson. Among other comments, Trump seemed to assert that Jackson, who died in 1845, could have prevented the Civil War, which began in 1861, and that the causes of the bloodiest conflict in the nation's history have not been addressed or discussed. "I mean, had Andrew Jackson been a little later, you wouldn't have had the Civil War," said Trump in an interview with the Washington Examiner's Salena Zito. |
Barack Obama tweets at Jimmy Kimmel after his moving speech about the ACA Posted: 02 May 2017 11:21 AM PDT Well this is touching. After his incredibly moving opening monologue last night about his newborn son's open heart surgery and his support for the Affordable Care Act, late night host Jimmy Kimmel got a tweet from the man who made it happen, former President Barack Obama. SEE ALSO: That awkward moment when Republicans failed to kill Obamacare but they bought boastful TV ads anyway and now they're airing, LOL In case you haven't seen the monologue (and truly, it's a must-watch), Kimmel reveals that his son was born with a heart defect that required emergency open heart surgery. After thanking the wonderful doctors and nurses who saved his son's life, Kimmel talked to his audience about the incredible importance of the ACA. "If your baby is going to die and it doesn't have to - it shouldn't matter how much money you make," the tearful host said. "I think that's something that whether you're a Republican or Democrat or something else, we all agree on that." "No parent should ever have to decide if they can afford to save their child's life...it just shouldn't happen," he pleaded. Obama, seeing Kimmel's impassioned speech (which, again is a must-watch), responded in a tweet Tuesday afternoon. Well said, Jimmy. That's exactly why we fought so hard for the ACA, and why we need to protect it for kids like Billy. And congratulations! https://t.co/77F8rZrD3P — Barack Obama (@BarackObama) May 2, 2017 Like Kimmel said, let's take care of each other. US cop who killed unarmed black man guilty of rights charge Posted: 02 May 2017 07:06 PM PDT A South Carolina policeman who was filmed shooting an unarmed black man in the back after a traffic stop pleaded guilty Tuesday to unlawful killing while performing official duties, which could bring up to life in prison. The Justice Department said that former North Charleston, South Carolina, police officer Michael Slager, 35, agreed to the single federal charge five months after a jury failed to convict him of murder in the case. "The Department of Justice will hold accountable any law enforcement officer who violates the civil rights of our citizens by using excessive force," said Attorney General Jeff Sessions. |

Al-Qaeda claims it is ‘fighting alongside’ US-backed coalition forces in Yemen Posted: 02 May 2017 05:16 AM PDT The leader of al-Qaeda's forces in Yemen has said his fighters have worked with government-allied factions in the civil war towards their common goal of ousting Houthi rebels. Qasim al-Rimi, who has led the branch of the global jihadist movement known as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (Aqap) since his predecessor was killed in 2015, told the group's media arm al-Malahem on Sunday that his followers were de facto aligned with an array of forces in the complex conflict. While al-Rimi did not elaborate on what he meant by "alongside", many Sunni tribal militias, as well as the pan-Arab Muslim Brotherhood movement and conservative Salafis, are allied to the exiled Yemeni government fighting against Shia rebels known as Houthis who seized control of the capital Sanaa in 2014. |

Toddler accidentally locks himself in car, has a great time getting rescued Posted: 02 May 2017 02:40 PM PDT Fourteen-month-old Brandon Emery unwittingly locked himself in the car last week during a shopping trip with his mom. Don't worry, though — he made it out just fine. And he seems to have had an extremely fun experience. According to CBS News, the toddler climbed from the backseat into the front of his mother's unlocked car while she unloaded groceries at a store in Bude, United Kingdom. After she closed the trunk, but before she got back into the car, Brandon pushed the "lock" button. Whoops. SEE ALSO: People are sharing the weird little things that really annoy their mums Luckily, firefighters arrived quickly to save the day. And when Brandon decided to put a coin in his mouth, they swiftly broke the car window and pulled him to safety — making what could have been a terrifying experience a pretty funny one instead. Brandon, for his part, looked thrilled the whole time. "He was clearly traumatised by the whole ordeal," his mom joked on Facebook. And he got some early driving practice! Nice. Iranians must give Rouhani second term to make good on nuclear deal: vice president Posted: 03 May 2017 07:17 AM PDT By Alissa de Carbonnel TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's president must get a second term to secure the economic benefits that he promised would result from a diplomatic thaw with the West, Vice President Masoumeh Ebtekar said ahead of a May 19 election. Hassan Rouhani's hardline challengers for the presidency, some of whom are close to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, say he traded away too much in a 2015 deal with world powers that limited Iran's nuclear work but failed to deliver sufficient rewards. In a rare interview with a trio of foreign reporters at an EU-Iran business forum on Sunday, Ebtekar, one of Iran's 12 vice presidents, said voters should not give up on Rouhani. |
IS attack kills dozens at Syria camp Posted: 02 May 2017 05:46 PM PDT A jihadist assault led by suicide bombers killed dozens at a camp for the displaced near Syria's border with Iraq, as pressure grows on the Islamic State group in both countries. The violence left at least 46 people dead and came as another surprise IS attack on Tuesday killed 10 soldiers in Iraq, to the south along the border. As the tolls mounted, US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin discussed steps to ease the Syrian civil war, which has pitched Moscow and Washington into rival camps. |

Fasting Vs. Traditional Diet: Which Is Better for Weight Loss? Posted: 02 May 2017 05:04 PM PDT Fasting diets are trendy these days, but they may be no better for weight loss than traditional diets, according to a new study. Researchers looked at a weight-loss method called "alternate-day fasting," in which people drastically reduce their calorie intake every other day, but eat more than usual on nonfasting days. The researchers randomly assigned 100 obese adults to one of three groups: an alternate-day fasting group, a traditional diet group and a group that did not diet at all. |

Maybe Tim Cook should blame the iPhone 7’s three-year-old design for declining sales Posted: 03 May 2017 06:18 AM PDT Apple on Tuesday afternoon reported fiscal second-quarter earnings that were largely in line with expectations. Revenue climbed to $52.9 billion from $50.2 billion in the year-ago quarter, and net profit came in at $11 billion. Second-quarter guidance that missed analysts' consensus estimate was largely responsible for driving Apple shares down in after-hours trading, but another troubling line item offered some cause for concern: Sales of the iPhone, Apple's chief moneymaker, dropped to 50.76 million units from 51.2 million units in the same quarter last year. Chief executive Tim Cook was quick to blame the rumor mill for the continued slow-down in iPhone sales. Of course, there is no question that rumors of a completely redesigned iPhone 8 played a role in convincing some people to hold off on upgrading old iPhones. But there's also no question that something else is responsible in part for slowing iPhone sales, and we all know that something else is the iPhone 7. A narrative formed on gadget blogs ahead of Apple's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus unveiling last September. Because the new iPhones featured a design that looked just like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, many bloggers labeled the phones "boring." Once the new phones were released, anyone who actually picked up a new iPhone 7 or 7 Plus and used it instantly knew it wasn't boring at all. But there's little question that people continued to judge these books by their covers following their launch. Apple took a chance when it decided to recycle the same iPhone design for a second year. Since the launch of the iPhone 3GS in 2009, Apple has trained its user base to expect a fresh new iPhone design every other year. Since 2015 was an "S" year, 2016's iPhone 7 should have offered users a new look and feel in addition to all the new features and upgrades. Instead, we got the same iPhone for a third consecutive year, but with a fresh coat of paint. Well, it turns out that a fresh coat of paint wasn't enough for some customers. "In general, what we are seeing, we're seeing what we believe to be a pause in purchases on iPhone, which we believe are due to the earlier and much more frequent reports about future iPhones," Cook said on Tuesday's earnings call. "And so that part is clearly going on and it could be what's behind the data. I don't know but we are seeing that in full transparency." Again, there is absolutely no question that the rumor mill shares the blame for the continued decline in Apple's iPhone business. The same can be said each and every year. The iPhone is the most beloved consumer electronics device in the world, and people want to know what's coming next. Details begin to leak more than a year before each new iPhone launches, and the iPhone 8 was no different. This time around, however, the details that have leaked so far paint a picture of an exciting new iPhone design made of glass and stainless steel with an OLED display, ultra-thin bezels, and a Touch ID fingerprint scanner embedded in the screen itself. Meanwhile, the latest iPhones sitting on store shelves look just like the iPhones from 2015, which look just like the iPhones from 2014. 50.76 million iPhones is a whole lot of iPhones. Apple earned $11 billion in profit last quarter. The company's cash stockpile grew to $256.8 billion — that's more than a quarter of a trillion dollars. It was a massive, massive quarter. But if you're going to attempt to explain away the continued slide in iPhone sales, not mentioning Apple's three-year-old iPhone 7 design is oblivious at best and disingenuous at worst. |

Key Trump priorities left out of US spending deal Posted: 01 May 2017 04:08 PM PDT US President Donald Trump is "pleased" with a bipartisan deal to fund government through September, the White House said Monday, even though several of his top priorities were left out of the agreement. The newly-unveiled congressional deal includes Trump's call for increased military spending, but rejects his demand to fund a border wall and maintains spending levels for key government operations including the State Department that he had proposed gutting. The agreement was struck late Sunday after weeks of tense negotiations fueled the threat of a government shutdown just as Trump was marking his 100th day in office. |
