Everest rescuers retrieve bodies of two Indian climbers Posted: 25 May 2017 04:15 AM PDT Rescuers have retrieved the bodies of two Indian climbers who died on Mount Everest last year but whose remains could not be moved due to bad weather, an official said Thursday. A team of Nepali climbers retrieved the bodies of Goutam Ghosh and Paresh Nath from the balcony, an area just below the summit of the 8,848-metre (29,029-foot) mountain. Ghosh's remains were only located this year by other climbers on the mountain. |
Trump didn't let Sean Spicer meet the pope even though he really wanted to Posted: 24 May 2017 05:50 PM PDT The Trumps and some White House officials met with Pope Francis on Wednesday, but one figure was notably missing: Sean Spicer. And apparently, he's pretty upset about it. A source close to the White House told CNN that Spicer not being brought along to the meeting was "a slight," and that to meet Papa Francesco was "all he wanted." SEE ALSO: James Comey once pulled a Sean Spicer to avoid Trump Granting the one thing Spicer wanted was, uhh, just not on Trump's mind we guess. Though he did manage to bring along Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, in addition to Jared and Ivanka. Obama in Berlin: ‘We can’t hide behind a wall’ Posted: 25 May 2017 07:21 AM PDT Former President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel attend a discussion at the German Protestant Kirchentag in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin on May 25. Former President Barack Obama seemed to take a subtle swipe at his successor Thursday, telling a Berlin audience that the world cannot "hide behind a wall" — an apparent reference to President Trump's signature campaign promise to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. Obama was in Germany for Kirchentag, a conference affiliated with the Protestant church that he attended at the invitation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. |

Officials at Heritage Academy, a private Christian school in Maryland, said Maddi Runkles, 18, was not welcome at the event because she had to be held "accountable for her immorality". "Maddi is being disciplined, not because she's pregnant, but because she was immoral," David Hobbs, the school administrator, said in a statement. |

DeVos was answering questions on the White House budget proposal in front of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education. The budget proposal has been criticized by some for making deep cuts to public education to fund school choice voucher programs such as those that DeVos promoted in her home state of Michigan. |

Regional and national leaders from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged the march to protest against a perceived deterioration in security in the state of West Bengal, which is ruled by a rival left-wing party. Donald Trump links mass immigration to Manchester terror attack despite bomber being British-born Posted: 25 May 2017 11:33 AM PDT Donald Trump appeared to link large-scale immigration to the terror attack in Manchester, even though bomber Salman Abedi was born in Britain. "My travels and meetings have given me renewed hope that nations of many faiths can unite to defeat terrorism, a common threat to all of humanity," he said in a speech during which he also berated those Nato members who had failed to contribute their fair share of the alliance's costs. During his election campaign, Mr Trump repeatedly called for tougher screening of immigrants to the US, even though the process for refugees from countries such as Syria or Somalia can take up to five years. |

Venezuela military defends protests role, backs Maduro congress Posted: 25 May 2017 12:21 PM PDT By Andrew Cawthorne CARACAS (Reuters) - Decried by protesters as "murderers" defending a dictator, Venezuela's military insisted on Thursday it was not taking sides in the national political turmoil, though it did back socialist President Nicolas Maduro's controversial plan for a new congress. The armed forces' National Guard unit has played a pivotal role in two months of unrest rocking Venezuela, often blocking marches and using teargas and water cannons to fight youths hurling stones and Molotov cocktails. At least 57 people have been killed, including one National Guard member and two policemen. |

Don’t even pretend you already knew all 10 of these hidden iPhone tricks Posted: 26 May 2017 07:33 AM PDT Apple's iOS platform has a wonderfully simple and intuitive UX, but the platform continues to grow more and more complex with each passing year. The iPhone is the kind of device that just about anyone can pick up and figure out how to use quickly, and yet it also hides all sorts of nifty features and functions that even the most savvy users probably don't know about. Learning about cool secret features that are hiding in your iPhone is always fun because it makes your phone feel fresh and new, if even for a moment. We're going to run through 10 little-known iPhone tricks in this post. Even if you already know about some of them, we guarantee you'll learn something new. Delete text faster: When you tap and hold the backspace key on the iPhone's keyboard, the delete rate speeds up after a while. But here's a trick we bet you didn't know — if you press harder on the backspace key on any iPhone with 3D Touch, it'll speed up instantly. Deleting will also slow back down if you release some of the pressure. Quickly and easily turn off the flashlight: Being able to turn on the iPhone's flashlight from Control Center while the phone is locked is super convenient. But having to swipe back in and tap the button again to turn it off can be annoying, especially when your hands are full. Instead, simply start to swipe our lock screen to the left like you're opening the camera, but only swipe a tiny bit and then let go. Your phone will think you're opening the camera app and the flash will turn off. As someone who walks a dog late at night every day, I can confirm that this trick definitely comes in handy when you've got an iPhone 7 Plus in one hand and a bag full of in the other. See all open Safari tabs: Isn't that cascading list of Safari tabs annoying? Instead of scrolling around looking for something, turn your phone to landscape while on any tab. Then pinch the screen like you're zooming out on a photo, and you'll see all of your open tabs like this: Open Spotlight in any app: Sometimes you want to search your phone without opening the Notification Center. You can — with any app open, just pull down from the top of the screen like you're opening Notification Center, but stop when just the search field is visible and you feel a little haptic vibration. Easy package tracking: Did someone send you a package and then text you the tracking number? Tap and hold on the tracking number in the Messages app and an option will pop up right there to track it. Prioritize app downloads: Via Reddit, did you know you could prioritize your app downloads? If you're in the middle of downloading and/or updating a whole bunch of apps but there's one in particular you need, just 3D Touch the icon and you'll get this menu: Infinite zoom on any photo: It's kind of annoying that you can only zoom in to a certain point on photos you capture on your iPhone. Check this out — tap the edit button, crop the photo just a tiny little bit, and save it. Now you can zoom in infinitely! Things start to get a little weird after you zoom in too far, so try not to get lost. Search for words on a webpage: Okay, this one is HUGE. Most people have no idea that you can actually search for words on a webpage in mobile Safari just like you can in a desktop browser. One any webpage, type the word you're looking for in the URL bar but don't tap "Go." Instead, scroll down and you'll see an option to search for the word, and you can then tap through each instance. Here, you can see that I searched for the word "echo": Close all Safari tabs at once: This is a big one for people who leave tons of tabs open and decide they need to start fresh. Just tap and hold on the tab switcher button in the bottom-right corner in Safari, no 3D Touch needed. A little menu will then pop up and give you the option to close all tabs. Drag share sheet options to rearrange them: Here's another trick that comes courtesy of Reddit. If you want to quickly reorder your options on the iOS share sheet, simply tap on one and drag it around. Here's a screenshot that shows how it works: |

How a botched raid led to martial law in the Philippines Posted: 25 May 2017 03:10 AM PDT It was meant to be a "surgical operation" to capture one of the world's most wanted terrorists, who was hiding and wounded in a southern Philippine city. Three days later Marawi, the centre of Islam in the mainly Catholic Asian nation was swarmed by tanks, attack helicopters and thousands of troops fighting Islamic State-linked fighters holed up in homes and buildings. President Rodrigo Duterte had also declared martial law across the southern third of the country to quell the crisis, while many of the 200,000 residents had fled... and security forces had lost their target: Isnilon Hapilon. |
California highway to be closed for months after Big Sur landslide Posted: 24 May 2017 03:56 PM PDT A section of highway winding along California's breathtaking Big Sur coastline will probably remain closed for months by damage from a massive landslide unleashed by a rain-soaked hillside over the Pacific, state transportation officials said on Wednesday. After the wettest winter on record in the state, the collapse marked the third major closure in Big Sur, a roughly 76-mile stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway that hugs California's rugged Central Coast between Cambria and Carmel-by-the-Sea. The Big Sur portion of State Route 1 is designated as a National Scenic Byway for its spectacular coastal vistas and is famed as one of the longest stretches of largely undeveloped shoreline in the continental United States. |

This is Why Trader Joe's is So Cheap Posted: 25 May 2017 09:01 AM PDT Trader Joe's has long been a haven for those seeking affordable eats, but the way they keep their prices so low might surprise you. While many companies are able to offer low prices by opting for warehouse-like stores, paying workers next to nothing, and outsourcing their operations to countries with cheaper labor, Trader Joe's is routinely lauded for both its customer service and its treatment of employees, earning top spots on Forbes's Best Employers list year after year. Instead of paying middlemen, Trader Joe's purchases most of their food directly from suppliers, enabling the chain to keep their products wallet-friendly. |
