Mexico captures protégé, turned rival, of drug lord Chapo Guzman Posted: 02 May 2017 09:08 AM PDT Mexican security forces on Tuesday arrested accused drug kingpin Damaso Lopez, believed to be locked in a bloody struggle for control of the Sinaloa Cartel against the sons of its captured leader Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. The attorney general's office announced that its agents with the help of the army had captured Lopez, one of the top-ranking figures in the world's most successful drug cartel, which has been destabilized by "El Chapo's" extradition in January to the United States. |

Turbulence injures 27 on Aeroflot flight to Bangkok Posted: 01 May 2017 02:54 AM PDT Passengers on an Aeroflot flight from Moscow to Thailand were slammed into the ceiling after their aircraft hit a patch of severe turbulence injuring 27 people, some of them suffering fractured bones, witnesses and officials said Monday. The terrifying ordeal occurred when the plane flew through a pocket of "clean air" turbulence -- so-called because there is no cloud warning of its presence -- shortly before landing in Bangkok after midnight, the airline said. Denis Antonyuk, an official at Russia's embassy in Bangkok said 24 Russian nationals and three Thais were injured. |

San Diego police kill beer-drinking poolside gunman who shot eight Posted: 30 Apr 2017 10:26 PM PDT San Diego police said on Sunday they had shot and killed a man who had opened fire beside a pool at an apartment complex, while holding a beer in his other hand, wounding eight people. San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told an evening news conference the gunman was killed after pointing his weapon at police, who had responded to reports of shots being fired at an apartment complex in the wealthy enclave of La Jolla just after 6 p.m. local time (0100 GMT Monday). Winter fighting took heavy toll on Afghan forces: report Posted: 30 Apr 2017 09:20 PM PDT Afghan security forces were killed at a "shockingly high" rate during what historically has been a winter lull in fighting against the Taliban, a US watchdog said in a report Monday. Insider says Apple’s first new iOS product line in years will be unveiled at WWDC Posted: 01 May 2017 07:42 AM PDT In just a matter of days, a second trustworthy source has mentioned the Apple's unnamed Amazon Echo competitor. And this time around we have a purported launch date for the gadget, which will mark Apple's first new iOS-powered product line since the Apple Watch.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a note to investors seen by 9to5Mac that Apple will launch a "Siri Speaker" product at WWDC 2017 un June. Kuo, who has an accurate track record when predicting Apple's plans, says there's a more than 50% chance of Apple announcing the device at its developers conference next month. The product should then hit stores in the second half of the year, though it's unclear how much it will cost. Kuo calls the unbranded device "Apple's first home AI product," saying that it'll feature "excellent" sound, packing in seven tweeters and a subwoofer. The device will be sold as a more premium option compared to the Amazon Echo. A few days ago, Apple leaker Sonny Dickson said that Apple's Siri speaker design is currently being finalized. He later added that the device might feature some form of Beats technology and run a version of iOS. https://twitter.com/SonnyDickson/status/857584905982693379 Dickson further explained to Mashable that the gadget will feature a design similar to Apple's Mac Pro, but also to UE Boom's mesh speaker. Finally, he noted that it'll have controls in a concave area on top of the speaker. |
Scoreboard proposal at Fenway Park goes painfully wrong Posted: 01 May 2017 08:13 AM PDT Scoreboard proposals are a pretty risky move...and they don't always pay off. One Red Sox fan learned that lesson the hard way on Sunday. He popped the big question on the scoreboard at Fenway Park, but he didn't exactly get the response he was hoping for. Of course his humiliation, like his proposal, was exceedingly public. People at the game took to Twitter immediately to talk about the awkwardness. The scoreboard proposal at Fenway may have just gone awry. There was no hug, the camera cut away and the crowd groaned. — Pete Abraham (@PeteAbe) May 1, 2017 Holy hell somebody just proposed to their girlfriend at Fenway and I think they said no. — Ty Anderson (@_TyAnderson) May 1, 2017 A video board proposal just happened at Fenway...and she said no... — Corey Thiele (@coreythiele) May 1, 2017 Someone even managed to capture a video of the moments following the proposal, in which she says the couple in question are fighting. Ouch. This guy just proposed at Fenway on camera. She said no. Now they are arguing. That poor camera man pic.twitter.com/N9m8nOIXKH — Kim (@kimba7391) May 1, 2017 Of course we don't know for sure that she didn't eventually say yes, but either way she was well within her rights to not be thrilled with this over-the-top gesture. And for some, the non-storybook ending was a welcome change from the usually sappy moments. Finally. Someone said no to a proposal on the Jumbotron at fenway. Love it. #StopProposingAtSportingEvents — Tom Giles (@TomGilesCSN) May 1, 2017 It's impossible to know the exact circumstances that led to this mess, but it sure seems like this dude should have made extra sure his girlfriend was on the same page re: lifelong commitment before popping the question in a stadium full of people. N.Y. zoo names giraffe calf Tajiri for 'hope' but means 'rich' Posted: 01 May 2017 12:17 PM PDT Tajiri was picked as the winner of a naming contest for a baby giraffe whose long anticipated birth, hooves first, was watched online last month by millions tuning into his mother April's pen at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York. Zoo owner Jordan Patch, announcing the name on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday, said the Swahili word was chosen for its forward-looking meaning when translated into English. "Tajiri is a word in Swahili that means hope," Patch said, as he fed carrots to April while Tajiri looked on. |
N. Korea warns of nuclear test 'at any time' Posted: 01 May 2017 12:19 AM PDT North Korea warned Monday that it will carry out a nuclear test "at any time and at any location" set by its leadership, in the latest rhetoric to fuel jitters in the region. Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been running high for weeks, with signs that the North might be preparing a long-range missile launch or a sixth nuclear test -- and with Washington refusing to rule out a military strike in response. A spokesman for the North's foreign ministry said Pyongyang was "fully ready to respond to any option taken by the US". |

When it comes to finding dates, these jobs always win Posted: 01 May 2017 10:23 AM PDT Want fellow daters to rule in your favor? Maybe you should have become a lawyer. According to some new data out from the dating app Happn, being an attorney is most likely to help you rack up the likes. The app, which uses your real-time location to find people who've crossed your path, analyzed their 2.9 million users and figured out the five professions considered the hottest for both men and women. Lawyers were the most "crushed" — Happn's lingo for being liked — among men and women both. It's a bit surprising, since lawyers don't exactly have a reputation for being super fascinating or sweet. But perhaps they have other qualities to recommend them, like ambition and relatively high incomes. For men, users who identified themselves as analysts came in just behind lawyers. After that, engineers, salesmen, and doctors rounded out the top five. In second place for women was being a designer. Then it was teacher, marketer, and physician. It's worth remembering that this info doesn't necessarily apply to dating apps across the board. But if you're looking for love on Happn, basically be a doctor or a lawyer — it's horrifying how closely this mirrors the advice so many of our parents have given us. *shudders* WATCH: This new fitness craze requires nothing but climbing into bed and sleeping |

Merkel pushes Putin on Ukraine, gay rights Posted: 02 May 2017 08:44 AM PDT German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Vladimir Putin insisted Tuesday that there was no alternative to a stalled Ukraine peace plan as they struggled to mask deep rifts during a first meeting in Russia since 2015. Merkel pushed Putin at a frosty encounter to ensure a ceasefire in war-torn east Ukraine, but the Russian leader laid the blame on Kiev for a European-brokered peace deal hitting a dead end. The rare visit also saw the German chancellor confront Putin over rights issues in Russia, including the alleged persecution of gay men in the North Caucasus region of Chechnya. |

White House defends Trump invitation to Duterte despite human rights criticism Posted: 01 May 2017 04:17 AM PDT By Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Sunday defended President Donald Trump's decision to invite Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to Washington, saying his cooperation was needed to counter North Korea, even as the administration faced human rights criticism for its overture to Manila. Trump issued the invitation on Saturday night in what the White House said was a "very friendly" phone conversation with Duterte, who is accused by international human rights groups of supporting a campaign of extrajudicial killings of drug suspects in the Philippines. |

Don’t worry, we’ll help you ditch your iPhone and switch to the Galaxy S8 Posted: 01 May 2017 08:51 AM PDT I would like nothing more than to ditch Apple's 3-year-old iPhone design and trade up to the sleek new Galaxy S8+ that was released just over a week ago. Samsung's new flagship phones feature hardware that no other company can compete with right now. Plus, there's still a painfully long wait until September (or October/November, if the rumors are correct and Apple's iPhone 8 release will be delayed) rolls around and Apple finally unveils its completely redesigned iPhone 8. Sadly, switching to the sleek new Galaxy S8 isn't an option for me personally. I explained why in a recent article, and then I added yet another reason why I could never dump my iPhone for Samsung's new Galaxy flagship. Of course, not everyone is locked in like me, and plenty of people out there will be ditching their iPhones for a new Galaxy S8 or S8+. It might seem like a daunting task, but it's actually much easier than you think. The thought of switching from one smartphone platform to another used to be enough to send people running for the hills. News flash: it's not 2014 anymore, ladies and gentlemen. In 2017, it's actually quite easy to switch from iOS to Android or vice versa. First of all, many people out there are already using Google services for things like contacts and calendar events. Even photos and videos will already be taken care of for anyone using the fantastic Google Photos app on his or her iPhone. iCloud is great for some things, but using platform agnostic services like the ones Google provides (for free, if you're willing to pay with your personal data) is a better option in many ways. Google services will never be integrated into iOS as deeply as iCloud, but they work on any device and afford other nifty features iCloud does not. Whether or not your contacts, calendar events, and media files are covered by cloud services like Google's, it's still wonderfully easy to move all of your data from your old iPhone to your new Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+. In fact, all you'll need is a computer and two pieces of free software. First, you'll need to download and install the latest version of iTunes (and just think... this might be the last time you ever have to use iTunes!). Once installed, use iTunes to make a new backup of your iPhone just like you normally do. Apple's instructions can be found right here if you've never backed up with iTunes before. Once that's done, head to Samsung's website and download the Samsung Smart Switch app for Windows or macOS. Some apps designed to help you move data from an iOS device to an Android device are clunky and unreliable, but Samsung's app is actually pretty solid. Open Smart Switch, connect your new Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ to your computer with the supplied USB-C cable, and the app will walk you through the process. Smart Switch uses the iPhone backup file created by iTunes to transfer your data to your new Galaxy S8. When you first connect, the app will ask if you want to back up your Galaxy phone, restore your phone, or sync your phone. You'll select the option to restore it, and then you'll click on "Select a different backup" and choose "iTunes Backup Data." After that, all you can choose which data you'd like to transfer to your Galaxy S8 (contacts, calendar, notes, photos, etc.), and you're done. You won't even lose your call history, text messages, or iMessages, since all of that data can be transferred as well. Now all that's left to do is enjoy your new Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+. I'm already jealous. |
