Billionaire Betsy DeVos wants to scrap student debt forgiveness. Surprised? | Jamie PeckWhen Donald Trump appointed Betsy DeVos secretary of education, America's school-going people worried it was only a matter of time before she brought back debtors' prison for student loan defaulters and subcontracted out K-12 education to Nickelodeon. Now Donald and Betsy are one step closer to making that vision a reality, with $10.6bn in cuts to crucial education programs, including a student loan forgiveness program first implemented by a Republican administration. According to budget documents obtained by the Washington Post, the Trump administration plans to end the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, which more than 400,000 people are counting on as part of their financial future.

Pit bull on the brink of euthanasia gets second chance as a police dog insteadHere's your daily reminder that dogs are amazing creatures. Leonard, a pit bull who had been put on the euthanasia list due to aggressive behavior, is set to become Ohio's first pit bull police dog. According to local ABC news, Leonard was brought to Union County Humane Society where staff members found Leonard's behavior too aggressive for adoption. This meant the next stop for Leonard would be euthanasia. SEE ALSO: Adorable pup loses a shocking 80 pounds and is now living his best life Fortunately, shelter director Jim Alloway — who has a background in working with police dogs — saw potential in Leonard. "I walked out with a squegee. He ran up and bit it and then he went running through the yard. I knew it was a special characteristic. He wasn't being aggressive. He wanted to play," Alloway told ABC news. Leonard was sent to be trained by Storm Dog Tactical, an organization that specializes in training dogs for K9 police units. Now that he's been fully trained, he's ready for certification as official police material. Leonard is set to start his new job this weekend, and we couldn't be more proud. Pentagon plans to 'annihilate' IS fighters

Pentagon plans to 'annihilate' IS fightersPresident Donald Trump has instructed the Pentagon to "annihilate" the Islamic State group in Syria in a bid to prevent escaped foreign fighters from returning home, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Friday. The move to encircle then kill as many jihadists in place as possible -- rather than letting them exit a city and targeting them as they flee -- reflects an increased urgency to stop battle-hardened jihadists bringing their military expertise and ideology back to European capitals and other areas. Trump, who campaigned on a pledge to quickly defeat IS, signed an executive order soon after taking office giving his generals 30 days to come up with a revised plan to wipe the jihadists out.

Thousands of AT&T and DirecTV workers are going on strike this weekend

Posted: 19 May 2017 12:48 PM PDT

Thousands of AT&T and DirecTV workers are going on strike this weekendOn Friday afternoon, thousands of AT&T employees walked off the job in protest of the company's inability to come to an agreement on union contracts with its workforce. Wireless workers from 36 states (and DC) will take part in the strike, along with wireline workers from California, Nevada and Connecticut and DirecTV technicians in California and Nevada. If an agreement can't be reached quickly, retail stores in several states will likely shut down this weekend as well. "We will no longer stand by as AT&T hems and haws at the bargaining table, keeping its own workers from achieving the American Dream they once promised," said Dennis Trainor, Vice President of CWA District 1. "Despite being the largest telecom company in the country with nearly $1 billion a month in profits and the CEO earning $28 million, AT&T continues to pinch its workers' basic needs and stand in the way of high-quality service its customers pay good money for. This is a warning to AT&T: there's only one way out of this now—a fair contract—and we'll settle for nothing less." According to a press release we received this afternoon, AT&T workers are demanding wage increases, improved job security, affordable healthcare and a fair scheduling policy. AT&T employees claim that once the company changed its commission plan, they started taking home less money. Another major point of contention for the workers is the outsourcing of labor. They argue that AT&T is cutting customer service jobs and sacrificing the quality to save money. 12,000 call center jobs in the US have been eliminated since 2011 as AT&T has chosen to instead contract with third-party vendors overseas that supply low-wage workers who aren't subject to much weaker labor protections. The press release states that the AT&T employees will return to work on Monday, but have "vowed to do what they have to do if AT&T violates their rights or an open-ended strike becomes necessary." UPDATE: AT&T provided us with the following statement in regards to the strike:

A strike is in no one's best interest, and it's baffling as to why union leadership would call one when we're offering terms in which our employees in these contracts – some of whom average from $115,000 to $148,000 in total compensation – will be better off financially. We're prepared, and we will continue working hard to serve our customers. This involves less than 14 percent of our employees. What's most important is we're all family, whether you're a union member or not. Like any family we have our disagreements but we'll sort them out. We've reached 29 fair agreements since 2015 covering over 128,000 of our employees, and we're confident we can do the same here.

Working in the Tesla factory sounds like hell

Posted: 18 May 2017 12:51 PM PDT

Working in the Tesla factory sounds like hell

Tesla is doing everything different to a regular car company, and making a lot of friends along the way. Not negotiating on price and selling direct to consumers has given Tesla a reputation for being fair and friendly, and made traditional car companies look increasingly out of date.

But there's one other big difference: Tesla's workers aren't unionized, and from time to time, rumors surface about bad working conditions in the company's factories. A new report in the Guardian cites 15 former and current workers to paint a picture of a factory where everyone is stressed out, overworked, and potentially in real danger.

According to the report, Tesla has a "culture of long hours under intense pressure, sometimes through pain and injury, in order to fulfill the CEO's ambitious production goals." Fatigue seems to be the number-one problem, as workers described colleagues working for so long that they simply passed out. "I've seen people pass out, hit the floor like a pancake and smash their face open," a production technician said.

It seems to be more than just anecdotal. Since 2014, over 100 ambulances have been called to Tesla's factory for a range of issues, including dizziness and exhaustion. Obviously, some of those ambulance calls would be for unrelated injuries or incidents that would happen at any workplace, but exhaustion and overwork just keep on popping up.

Speaking of which: back in February, Tesla worker Jose Moran wrote a blog post arguing why Tesla employees should unionize. In the post, Moran said:

Most of my 5,000-plus coworkers work well over 40 hours a week, including excessive mandatory overtime. The hard, manual labor we put in to make Tesla successful is done at great risk to our bodies.

Preventable injuries happen often. In addition to long working hours, machinery is often not ergonomically compatible with our bodies. There is too much twisting and turning and extra physical movement to do jobs that could be simplified if workers' input were welcomed. Add a shortage of manpower and a constant push to work faster to meet production goals, and injuries are bound to happen.

Sound familiar?

The Guardian did speak to Elon Musk about the allegations. He acknowledged the long hours, but argues that Tesla is losing money so "This is not some situation where, for example, we are just greedy capitalists who decided to skimp on safety in order to have more profits and dividends and that kind of thing. It's just a question of how much money we lose. And how do we survive? How do we not die and have everyone lose their jobs."

Trump's first foreign trip is already a disaster and it hasn't even started

Posted: 18 May 2017 12:45 PM PDT

Trump's first foreign trip is already a disaster and it hasn't even startedDonald Trump's first foreign trip as president doesn't start until Friday, but it's already suffered a few setbacks.  He's supposed to stop in Israel during his four-country, nine-day trip. But already his plan to visit and give a speech atop the ancient mountaintop fortress of Masada has been scrapped. Why? Because he won't be allowed to land his helicopter on the site, Newsweek reported. SEE ALSO: Trump plans to do a live Twitter forum in Saudi Arabia. But really. The UNESCO World Heritage site can be damaged so landings are banned. Trump was set to take a cable car to the top, as visiting U.S. presidents before him have done, like George W. Bush in 2008 and Bill Clinton in 1998, according to the Jerusalem Post. But Trump doesn't do cable cars apparently, so the Masada visit is canceled and instead he's speaking at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, according to Newsweek. McMaster Planned speech Trump at Masada has been struck from the itinerary. @WhiteHouse spokesman as due to it being "too hot" there. pic.twitter.com/b5jvwhuGmN — Hans Posthumus (@Tuinier) May 17, 2017 Also while in Israel, local media was reporting complicated logistical details including only 15 minutes allotted for Trump's visit to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Remembrance Museum in Jerusalem. Apparently this is enough time for a quick talk and to sign the guest book. As the Jewish news publication Forward asked, "Is 15 minutes enough time for Trump at Yad Vashem?" Another opportunity with lots of terrible potential is a speech Trump is planning to give about radical Islam in Saudi Arabia. The speech writer is none other than his policy adviser Stephen Miller. He's credited as one of the chief architects of Trump's failed travel ban to keep people from Muslim-majority nations out of the U.S. He also has a strong history of anti-Muslim rhetoric and beliefs. Stephen Miller wrote Trump's Islam speech. What could possibly go wrong? — John Paul Keith (@johnpaulkeith) May 17, 2017 "Let's have Stephen Miller draft Trump's speech to the Muslim world" sums up the problems with this Administration's decision making. — Steve Zissou (@SteveZiss0u) May 17, 2017 Also joining Trump overseas is first lady Melania Trump. We haven't seen the Trumps together in a long time, so this will be ... exciting. Melania is joining @realDonaldTrump on his foreign trip: "I am very excited...," @FLOTUS said in a statement — Nolan D. McCaskill (@NolanDMcCaskill) May 18, 2017 Topping this all off is the fact that Trump doesn't even want to go on the trip. The New York Times reported that he thinks the trip is too long and he doesn't want to be away from a familiar setting — and his own bed. His aides are apparently freaking out about the president going off script, walking into unfamiliar territory or making promises to foreign leaders that he can't keep.  A former national security adviser to George W. Bush said for relationship-building overseas trips like Trump's, "You really hope that he sticks to the script, executes the trip as planned and avoids distractions, because the whole world is watching."  Welp, it's not like Trump ever spontaneously says offensive things or gets distracted, so, um, this should end well.   WATCH: There may be a new solution to the ocean trash problem

Scientists hunt down super rare T. Rex ant and are shocked at what they find

Scientists hunt down super rare T. Rex ant and are shocked at what they find

In nature, creatures that look ferocious and intimidating oftentimes have personalities to match. So, when researchers finally managed to find an active colony of an ant species with a frightening appearance and a name that literally means "tyrant ants," they expected to observe some seriously aggressive insect action. What they got instead has left them completely puzzled, and with more questions than answers.

Scientists have known that the Tyrannomyrmex rex ant exists for a long while now. Researchers first discovered a single dead member of the species way back in 2003 in Malaysia. Other solitary examples of the species were spotted later, but until now, nobody had ever found an actual nest. Researchers theorized that the ant was so rare because they only existed in untouched, pristine jungles, but when an intact nest was discovered on the grounds of a military training area in Singapore, it was only the first of many surprises the ants were ready to offer.

The most shocking thing about the ants may be that, despite their intimidating appearance, they exhibited no aggressive behavior in any of the testing the researchers performed. In fact, when faced with other insects, they froze, hid, or fled at the first sign of potential danger. As National Geographic reports, lead researcher Mark Wong "had a good laugh" when all of the ants' would-be prey seemed to send the insects running for the hills.

Along with being a bit funny, the ants' refusal to attack any of the potential prey offerings has left the scientists at a loss to explain what the species even eats. On top of that, the team found that the ants don't even have the same personal hygiene glands that other ants use to keep themselves and their colonies free of devastating bacteria. The specimens have preserved for further study, and may provide even more surprises down the road.
