Philippine militants behead seven loggers: policeIslamist militants in the Philippines have beheaded seven local loggers they kidnapped last week in their stronghold in the strife-torn south, police said Monday. The bodies of the loggers were found on Sunday in a mountainous village on the island of Basilan, local police chief John Cundo told AFP, blaming the killings on a faction of the Abu Sayyaf kidnap-for-ransom group based there. The group of senior Abu Sayyaf leader Furuji Indama abducted and killed the loggers apparently over a local business row rather than for its typical ransom activities, Cundo said.

Harvard apologises for erroneously listing Anthony Scaramucci as deadHarvard Law School apologised on Monday after its new alumni directory erroneously listed ousted White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci as dead. The directory included an asterisk next to Scaramucci's name indicating that he had been reported dead since the previous edition was released in 2011. "Regrettably, there is an error in the Harvard Law School alumni directory in the listing for Anthony Scaramucci," Harvard Law spokeswoman Michelle Deakin said in a statement. "We offer our sincere apologies to Mr. Scaramucci. The error will be corrected in subsequent editions." A timeline of Anthony Scaramucci's fall from grace 02:06 The directory is published every five years and is available only to alumni of the Ivy League law school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Scaramucci, who left his White House post on Monday after only 11 days on the job, is a 1989 graduate of the law school. He also served as an "expert in residence" there in 2012, according to Harvard Law's website, offering finance and investment advice to students. He founded the SkyBridge Capital investment fund in 2005 and later served as a senior official for the U.S. Export-Import Bank before being named communications director for the White House on July 21. Scaramucci shocked many last week with an expletive-laced interview that targeted then-chief of staff Reince Priebus and White House chief strategist Steve Bannon. He later tweeted that he sometimes uses "colourful language" and pledged to refrain. But on Wednesday, the White House announced his resignation only hours after former Gen. John Kelly was sworn in as President Donald Trump's new chief of staff.

NASA will get to test its planetary defense system way sooner than we thought

NASA is extremely interested in building a true astroid defense network that could spring into action as soon as a threat is detected, destroying or diverting a space rock before it can do any serious damage here on Earth. The actual development of a protection system is still in its infancy — with many proposed plans for dealing with troublesome astroids but no real-world testing to back any of them — but that won't stop NASA from testing its detection capabilities during an upcoming near-earth astroid flyby in October. Here's how it's going to work.

The astroid named 2012 TC4 is going to make its closest approach to Earth on October 12th, coming incredibly close to our planet. At its nearest point, the rock is expected to be as close as 4,200 miles from our planet. Compare that with our moon's orbit of around 240,000 miles and you have a good idea of how insanely close the space rock will be.

The close call makes 2012 TC4 a fantastic guinea pig for NASA's asteroid detection network, which will require the cooperation between many scientists and observatories acting in concert to establish the asteroid's exact path. At present, researchers know enough about the asteroid's path to be confident that it poses no threat to us, but figuring out exactly where it will pass will be a real test of the system.

"This is a team effort that involves more than a dozen observatories, universities and labs across the globe so we can collectively learn the strengths and limitations of our near-Earth object observation capabilities," Professor Vishnu Reddy of the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory said of the event. "The goal of the TC4 campaign is to recover, track and characterize 2012 TC4. "This effort will exercise the entire system, to include the initial and follow-up observations, precise orbit determination, and international communications."

Nissan attacked for one of 'nastiest anti-union campaigns' in modern US historyDays before a potentially historic union vote at the Nissan plant in Canton, Mississippi, the car company has been accused of running one of the "nastiest anti-union campaigns in the modern history of the American labour movement". The vote, a fiercely contested effort by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union to represent a foreign automaker's US plant, is planned for Thursday and Friday this week. In the closing days of the campaign, which has attracted support from the former presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, UAW officials and their allies have become increasingly confident of victory even as managers have pressured workers to vote no. "People are rallying," says Frank Figgers, co-chair of the Mississippi Alliance for Fairness at Nissan.

China must decide on further action against North Korea: U.S. ambassador to U.N.By Michelle Nichols NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States is "done talking about North Korea" and China must decide if it is willing to back imposing stronger United Nations sanctions on North Korea over its two long-range missile tests this month, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Sunday. Haley said in a statement that any new U.N. Security Council resolution "that does not significantly increase the international pressure on North Korea is of no value." Duke of Cambridge leads commemorations on 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele

Posted: 30 Jul 2017 11:27 AM PDT

Duke of Cambridge leads commemorations on 100th anniversary of the Battle of PasschendaeleEvery night in the Belgian city of Ypres at 8pm sharp, the Last Post echoes out across the Menin Gate. Since 1928 the buglers of the Last Post Association have performed this simple act of remembrance to the 250,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers killed here during the First World War. Sometimes they have played in the driving rain that defines this part of Flanders with not a soul watching. On Sunday evening, at an event commemorating the centenary of one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War, the eyes of the world were upon them. Before the service began, the Duke of Cambridge stepped forward to speak on behalf of a nation. "Thank you for the honour that you do us," he said. Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Ypres Credit: Getty The event at the Menin Gate was the beginning of two days of commemorations marking the Third Battle of Ypres, latterly known as Passchendaele, which raged between July 31 and Nov 6 1917 causing some 320,000 Allied casualties. The Sir Reginald Blomfield designed Menin Gate is inscribed with the names of more than 54,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers killed around Ypres in the First World War whose graves are not known – 40,537 were members of Britain's Armed Forces. The memorial was unveiled by Field Marshall Lord Plumer in July 1927 who told the assembled families of their fallen loved ones: "He is not missing. He is here." When the final notes echoed off the cobbles of the medieval Belgian city dubbed "Wipers" by the British troops posted here, the chairman of the Last Post Association Benoit Mottrie read the Exhortation. The Duke of Cambridge then laid a wreath alongside King Philippe of Belgium, followed by Theresa May, the Prime Minister. During his reading the Duke, who was wearing a suit with medals pinned to his chest, described how in the First World War, Britain and Belgium stood "shoulder to shoulder". Theresa May in Ypres Credit: James Whatling "One hundred years on, we still stand together, gathering as so many do every night, in remembrance of that sacrifice," he added. During his address, which followed that of the Duke of Cambridge, King Philippe of Belgium spoke of his pride at the people of Ypres for continuing the Last Post tradition for so many years and of "the immense sacrifice" of those who fell here. "Every time we stand here under the Menin Gate, we feel overwhelmed by the immensity of the sacrifice of the men whose names surround us," he said. "This battle, a hundred years ago, makes the bond between our countries strong and everlasting." As they sang, 54,391 poppy petals cascaded from the top of the Menin Gate – one for each name inscribed within its Portland stone arches. Around 200 descendants of those who fought in Passchendaele have travelled out to Belgium for the centenary commemorations which continue today at Tyne Cot Cemetery. Among those in Ypres on Sunday evening was Caroline Price, whose father, Colonel Cyril Helm, was in command of the 42nd Field Ambulance at Passchendaele. The 67-year-old from Kent recalls him first taking her to the Menin Gate aged just 10. "He stood there and cried," she said. "He had lost so many friends. It was a horrendous time for him." Duchess of Cambridge arriving at the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium Credit: Chris Radburn Alan Evans, a retired Royal Navy petty officer had travelled out to pay tribute to his great uncle Thomas George Evans who had signed up to fight with the Liverpool Pals Battalion at the onset of war and survived the Somme and countless other battles before losing his life at Passchendaele on Sept 20 at the age of 28. Evans has managed to get hold of the battalion diary for the day he was killed which records one officer killed, four wounded, 14 other ranks killed and 16 others wounded. "They said that was a good day for Passchendaele," the 56-year-old says. Following the service at the Menin Gate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended a commemoration event in Ypres Market Square. Dame Helen Mirren started the performance with a reading of the poem, In Flanders Fields, written by the Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae during the second battle of Ypres in 1915. She was followed by Ian Hislop who performed extracts from the Wipers Times, a play he wrote based on the satirical trench newspaper first produced in 1916 by two British soldiers holed up beneath the Ypres ramparts. Duchess of Cambridge and Queen of Belgium Credit: Stephen Lock / i-Images There was also a reading by the author Michael Morpurgo of his new short story, From Farm Horse to War Horse, specially written for the centenary event. The story is a follow-up to his children's book, War Horse, which in 2007 was adapted into an extraordinarily successful National Theatre production. The life-size puppet of Joey from the play accompanied Morpurgo in Ypres Market Square. His new story began with a grandfather recounting to his grandson the horrors of the war. "Just staying alive was the difficult bit," he says. "The worst was at Passchendaele. Hell on earth." Throughout the evening images from the battle were projected on to the Ypres Cloth Hall, along with footage of veterans recorded after the war. Private Harry Patch, the last surviving British soldier from the Western Front who died in 2009 at the age of 111 recalled Passchendaele simply as "mud, mud, mud" – what unspeakable events were obscured by the morass he could never bring himself to say. The evening ended with a projection of soldiers walking past the Menin Gate, a route so many once took only to never return A century on and the footsteps of the fallen still ring out. Their sacrifice is not forgotten.

Ford’s Mustang is getting a ‘Good Neighbor Mode’ thanks to an engineer’s angry neighbors

Ford's Mustang is getting a 'Good Neighbor Mode' thanks to an engineer's angry neighbors

Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, you've likely experienced the unfiltered rage that comes with being disturbed by a particularly loud car or motorcycle passing by your home. It can be incredibly annoying, especially if it jolts you out of an otherwise pleasant slumber, but Ford thinks it has a solution, and it's all thanks to a little incident between a former Ford engineer and his ticked-off neighbors.

The 2018 Ford Mustang will come with what is being casually referred to as "Good Neighbor Mode." Activated within the vehicle's dash menu system, the quiet mode seeks to mute much of the rumble of the exhaust pipes in an effort to keep your neighborhood from turning against you. It can be set manually or activated on a set schedule, automatically turning on or off depending on the time of day.

Steve von Forester is responsible for the neighborly new feature. He's the former head of vehicle engineering at Ford and now leads the team which designs and tweaks the overall user experience. Von Forester is also a Mustang owner with a V8 Shelby GT350, which had a habit of rustling his neighbors' feathers. After one particularly touchy situation in which one neighbor called 911 to complain about his loud exhaust, Von Forester came up with the idea for the quiet exhaust option.

Along with an overall calmer exhaust note, the newest Mustangs will also get a "Quiet Start" option, which will prevent the vehicle from roaring as the driver turns the key. These features should add up to an overall more suburb-friendly sports car, but that's only if Mustang owners actually decide to use them.

Trump just can't seem to make his mind up about ChinaTrump can't seem to work out his feelings towards China. The U.S. president attacked China on social media, just a day after North Korea tested out a ballistic missile that it claims can reach as far as the U.S. SEE ALSO: Trump started a Twitter war with China, and it worked: China's mad "I am very disappointed in China...they do NOTHING for us with North Korea," he posted in a series of tweets on Saturday. I am very disappointed in China. Our foolish past leaders have allowed them to make hundreds of billions of dollars a year in trade, yet... — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 29, 2017 ...they do NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk. We will no longer allow this to continue. China could easily solve this problem! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 29, 2017 Just a month ago however, Trump had posted tweets to a different tune, saying he "greatly appreciated" China's efforts to help out with North Korea.  While I greatly appreciate the efforts of President Xi & China to help with North Korea, it has not worked out. At least I know China tried! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 20, 2017 Trump's latest tweets also come in direct contrast to the statements he made in April, where he said that he realised it was "not so easy" for China to negotiate with North Korea. "After listening [to Mr Xi explaining the history of China and Korea] I realised it's not so easy," Trump told the Wall Street Journal during President Xi's visit to his Mar-a-Lago estate. "I felt pretty strongly that [China] had a tremendous power over North Korea. But it's not what you would think." But if you look back just a little over a year ago, Trump was pretty disdainful towards China. In March 2016, he accused China of doing "little to help," and "playing the U.S. for years."  North Korea is behaving very badly. They have been "playing" the United States for years. China has done little to help! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 17, 2017 Later in December 2016, he came out, guns blazing, criticising China's monetary policy. Did China ask us if it was OK to devalue their currency (making it hard for our companies to compete), heavily tax our products going into.. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 4, 2016 their country (the U.S. doesn't tax them) or to build a massive military complex in the middle of the South China Sea? I don't think so! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 4, 2016 Those tweets were widely cited in Chinese media, and the White House had to reassure the Chinese government that the U.S. did not mean to undermine China. Experts: Don't look to China According to some experts, Trump is going to remain disappointed if he continues to count on China to mediate for peace with North Korea. Ben Rhodes, a foreign policy adviser under Barack Obama, took to Twitter to express his views, replying to Trump's tweet: It is not at all true that China can easily solve this problem and this is a very dangerous and destabilizing approach. https://t.co/xmV3HaO9Pj — Ben Rhodes (@brhodes) July 30, 2017 Another analyst also agrees with Rhodes.  "Don't look for the Chinese to help us on North Korea," Harry Kazianis, director of defence studies at the Centre for the National Interest, a DC think-tank, told CNBC. "If you look at it from the Chinese eyes, they are probably actually more scared of North Korea than we are." WATCH: Trump is getting crushed at his own handshake game

iPhone 8: Rumours, release date and everything you need to know

Posted: 01 Aug 2017 07:32 AM PDT

iPhone 8: Rumours, release date and everything you need to knowApple is gearing up to release its new iPhone in a few weeks' time. The upcoming iPhone 8 is expected to mark a radical change for the company as it seeks to wow users with a 10th anniversary device. The iPhone 8, if indeed it is called that, has been rumoured to include features such as wireless charging, an edge-to-edge display and - for the first time - no home button. Here's what we're expecting from the iPhone 8 release. When will it be released? Apple has developed a pretty reliable release pattern. A new iPhone tends to be unveiled in early September, either on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Perhaps by coincidence, it often tends to be the week after IFA, a big technology conference in Germany, which this year starts on September 1. That means the best guess is Tuesday September 5 or Wednesday September 6. Because the Monday is a US holiday, the Wednesday might be more likely. iPhone release dates The phone then tends to go on sale a week or two later on a Friday, so September 15 or 22 are the best bets. Pre-orders tend to open a week before they go on sale. However, rumours of production delays have been reported by Apple experts and supply chain sources. The latest news hints that the new iPhone will not be sent to consumers until October to November of 2017, according to Japanese news site MacOtakara.  What will it be called? Apple has followed a familiar pattern since it released the iPhone 3G back in 2008. It releases a new phone with a major cosmetic change one year and then follows a year later with an improved "s" model. The last iPhone was the iPhone 7 so by that logic the next one would be called the iPhone 7s. However, there are reasons to suggest it could change this year. For one thing, last year's iPhone 7 was less of a radical departure from the iPhones of the previous two years, at least appearance-wise. If Apple does choose to introduce a brand new design, it probably wouldn't want to call it the 7s. The iPhone 8 makes more sense in that case. iPhone evolution Apple may choose to make a splash for its 10th anniversary, though. One rumoured name is the iPhone X. This makes some sense - few of Apple's series make it into double digits before changing their naming conventions (iPhone 13?) - so at some point a change is likely. There's a precedent here in Apple's Mac operating system - it went 1, 2, 3 and so on before switching to OS X. How much will it cost? The iPhone 9 could be Apple's most expensive handset yet, costing more than $1,000 in the US and £800 in the UK, Fast Company reports.  At a glance | iPhone sales What will it look like?  What will the iPhone 8 look like? What features will it have? Here are some of the most plausible suggestions floating around the rumour mill. Three different phones? For the last three years, Apple has released two phones, a 4.7-inch screen and a "Plus" 5.5-inch screen. But reports suggest a new high-end phone might be in the works  for 2017. The third model may have an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen, as opposed to the LCD screens on current iPhones. OLED is an upgrade on LCD in many ways, improving brightness and viewing angles, and is already used in devices such as Samsung's Galaxy S7. iPhone 8 concept Credit: ConceptsiPhone If Apple does introduce a new premium phone, some of the features that are rumoured for the iPhone 8 may only apply to that model. The iPhone 8 might come in a limited range of colours, including no white option.  Edge-to-edge display It has long been an ambition of Sir Jony Ive, Apple's design chief, to make an iPhone that looks like one piece of glass, with a screen that covers the whole of the front of the phone. Rumours suggest this might finally come to fruition with the new iPhone 8. Apple could replace the device's aluminium frame with a glass back, and have a screen that curves around the sides. Apple appeared to confirm the rumours in a leak at the end of July. An outline for what could be the company's next phone was discovered in the firmware of the HomePod. It showed an all-screen face.  Apple leak in HomePod firmware could be iPhone 8 design Credit: Apple Such a design would allow Apple to increase the screen size of the iPhone without increasing its actual footprint. It has been suggested the new phone will come with 5-inch and 5.8-inch screens. It would also require the front-facing camera to be built into the screen, not to mention... No home button The home button has been a feature of every iPhone since the first one 10 years ago, but Apple may be in a position to get rid of it. It has already introduced advanced pressure-detection technology with 3D Touch, and last year's iPhone 7 had a solid-state home button that vibrates instead of clicks. Supposed leaked photo of the iPhone 8 with no home button Credit: BGR  The iPhone screen now also wakes up when the phone is picked up, so there is less need to click a physical home button. Apple has patented a way of embedding Touch ID, its fingerprint reading technology, in the screen, so that might solve security issues. Touch Bar Removing the iPhone's home button could make space for a set of "function" keys similar to the Touch Bar on the new MacBook laptop. These could include short cuts for answering calls, sending messages and accessing popular apps.  How the iPhone 8 function keys could look Credit: iDropNews iOS 11 The best indication of how the iPhone 8 could look is Apple's latest software, which was unveiled in June and will ship on the new device. The standout features of iOS 11 are peer-to-peer Apple Pay and a redesigned Control Centre. It also has a revamped Siri and a do not disturb while driving mode.  iOS 11: 17 new and hidden features for your Apple iPhone and iPad Wireless charging Batteries are still the big problem with mobile phones - as good as they are, most still last just a day - and battery tech is only making incremental progress. This means manufacturers have focused on technology such as fast charging as a compromise. But Apple could go one better and allow wireless charging. Apple famously removed the iPhone 7's headphone jack, which meant users could not listen to wired headphones and charge their phone through the Lightning port at the same time. Removing the second part of that equation might make sense. Wireless charging technology demonstrated by Energous Credit: Energous Some phones and devices like the Apple Watch already use charging that requires the device to be placed on a inductive pad. Apple going one further and allowing true wireless charging that beams power from the socket would be a real breakthrough. Apples iPhone: a definitive history in pictures

Archbishop of Canterbury declares Sudan new Anglican provinceArchbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby on Sunday declared Sudan the 39th province of the worldwide Anglican Communion, six years after the predominantly Christian south gained independence from the north. The Anglican church in Sudan, a majority Muslim country, has been administered from South Sudan since the 2011 split which followed a civil war that left more than two million people dead. Sunday's ceremony in Khartoum added Sudan to the 85 million-strong worldwide Anglican communion's 38 member churches -- known as provinces -- and six other branches known as extra provincials.

President Xi says China loves peace but won't compromise on sovereigntyBy Philip Wen and Ben Blanchard BEIJING (Reuters) - China loves peace but will never compromise on defending its sovereignty, President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday while marking 90 years since the founding of the People's Liberation Army. Relations with self-ruled Taiwan have also worsened since Tsai Ing-wen from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party won presidential elections there last year.

Incredibly rare white snake found in Australia

Incredibly rare white snake found in Australia  A bright white snake with an "incredibly rare mutation" has been found in Australia's Northern Territory. The reptile was rescued by a resident in the area and handed into the Territory Wildlife Park where it is currently being cared for. "It is a white slaty grey, which is native to Australia but this one has an incredibly rare mutation, as they are usually a dark brown colour," the park said. "The nocturnal snake will be placed in quarantine at the park to ensure it is free of any nasties that can harm our other animals and then be put on display for everyone to marvel at." Staff said the white snake's black eyes indicate it is leucistic and not albino. They added the snake will not be released back into the wild as it "would be unlikely to live long".   "Animals of this colouring are usually 'sitting ducks'," they added. "This one was also in a conflict zone with human pets - so safer with us, and we will make sure she has a good life free of threats. "In an ideal world we would not need to rescue wildlife, but humans have created this situation and we have to try and manage it the best we can."  Electrocuted cannibal snakes give workers a massive fright  Funniest animals

App-downloading app breaks app-downloading record on app store

App-downloading app breaks app-downloading record on app storeThe Google Play services app, a back-end Android app that makes the Google magic happen on your phone, has broken five billion downloads on the Google Play Store. That's a record and a major milestone for Google's third-party app store, so it's only fitting that it's broken by a Google-owned app that most people probably haven't heard of. The Google Play Services framework is a key part of Google's presence on Android devices. It's a required component of any officially-sanctioned phone that uses Android, and behind the scenes, it's necessary for apps like Maps, Google Wallet, and a myriad of other Google services you probably don't even think about. Given that it's a staple on every single phone running an "official" version of Android, it's no surprise that Google Play Services is the first app to break the five billion download benchmark. We don't actually know how many downloads the app has seen exactly: Google doesn't disclose precise download figures for each app, but instead puts each app in a bracket for downloads. 1,000,000,000-5,000,000,000 was the top category under the old system, but Google's had to invent something new for Google Play Services. Despite the download success, Google Play Services isn't a universally-loved part of Android. Users complain about the space it takes up and the fact that you have to download it as a standalone service, rather than piece-by-piece as many other developers choose to integrate tools.
