Canadian town refuses to remove swastikas from park as mayor defends local history

Canadian town refuses to remove swastikas from park as mayor defends local historyA Canadian village has refused to remove swastikas from a local park after an activist tried to paint over the controversial symbols.  The Nazi emblems are on an anchor that is on display in Pointe-des-Cascades, about 50 miles west of Montreal in Quebec.  Corey Fleischer, founder of a group called Erasing Hate, was trying to paint over the symbols last Thursday when he was stopped by the local mayor, Gilles Santerre, who called police to have him removed from the park.  "The village of Pointe-des-Cascades does not endorse Nazism," Mr Santerre said in a statement on Tuesday. "Our village has a beautiful community and family spirit, and creates events that bring people together." Stressing it was part of the area's local history, he said the anchor, which belonged to a merchant vessel, predated the Second World War and was discovered by divers 25 years ago.  He cited a Radio Canada article that said the swastika was a symbol of peace before 1920.  The mayor sad the symbols would not be removed, but promised to place a more descriptive plaque next to the anchor to clarify its history.  Mr Fleischer, who believes the anchor should be in a museum, acknowledged the swastika was originally a religious icon that represented good luck. "It is no longer a sign of peace. It is no longer a sign of joy," he told CBC.   "There is no ifs ands or buts about it," he told the BBC. "It is a place where people come to feel safe and this is being displayed for everybody to see." David Ouellette, of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, said Mr Fleischer should not have acted without consulting the village but said it was important the anchor's history was made clear to the public.  "If you're going to display publicly the swastika, it's important to give the full context," Mr Ouellette told the CBC. After anti-Muslim attack, Brazilians shower victim with loveWhen video went viral of a racist attack on a Muslim street food vendor in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilians wondered gloomily: had their country also been swept up in a global wave of xenophobia? The answer -- a flood of love transforming the humble vendor into a folk hero and, on Thursday, the recipient of a Rio state award -- was a heartwarming no. It all began August 3 when Mohamed Ali Abdelmoatty Kenawy, 33, was manning the cart from which he sells Arab-style meat pies and hummus in the thronging center of Copacabana.

Former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra 'has fled Thailand', sources claim after verdict no-show

Posted: 25 Aug 2017 01:12 AM PDT

Former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra 'has fled Thailand', sources claim after verdict no-showOusted former Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has fled Thailand, sources close to her said on Friday, as the Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant after she failed to attend the court for the verdict in a negligence case brought against her by the ruling junta. "She has definitely left Thailand," one of the sources, who is also a member of the Shinawatra's Puea Thai Party, told Reuters. He declined to be named because he was not authorised to speak on behalf of Yingluck. Another source confirmed that she had gone. The sources did not give details of her current whereabouts. Lawyers of former Yingluck Shinawatra are surrounded by media reporters after she failed to appear the Supreme Court on Friday Credit: The Asahi Shimbun via Getty Images Yingluck missed a court appearance on Friday that could have seen her jailed, prompting the Supreme Court to issue an arrest warrant and the kingdom's junta to step up border controls. Thousands of supporters - outnumbered by security forces - waited from dawn for a glimpse of Thailand's first female prime minister, but she did not show, prompting fevered speculation that she may have joined her billionaire brother Thaksin in self-exile. "Her lawyer said she is sick and asked to delay the ruling... the court does not believe she is sick... and has decided to issue an arrest warrant," fearing she may flee the country, lead judge Cheep Chulamon told the court, rescheduling the verdict to September 27. Supporters of ousted former Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra react while wait for her at the Supreme Court in Bangkok, Thailand  Credit: REUTERS Thailand is deeply divided between the Shinawatras and their political base, which is mainly drawn from the rural poor, and a royalist army-aligned elite, who loathe the clan and refuse to cede power to democratic governments. Yingluck's government was removed by a military coup in 2014. If convicted for negligence over a flagship rice subsidy policy, she faces up to 10 years in prison and a life ban from politics. "I just learned that she did not show up (at court)," junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha told reporters. "I have ordered border checkpoints to be stepped up," he said, including local and major routes out of the country. Former Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra arrives to deliver closing statements in her trial at the beginning of August Credit: EPA Mystery over Yingluck's whereabouts was compounded by a parade of lawyers who brushed off suggestions that she has already fled the country - possibly to Singapore. "I was told at 8am that she was sick from Meniere's disease and felt vertigo, so she asked the court to postpone," her lawyer Norawit Larleng, told a throng of reporters outside the court. He added "I don't know," when asked whether she was still in Thailand. Yingluck's brother, Thaksin Shinawatra also a former premier, fled Thailand in 2008 before he was convicted of graft and handed a two year jail term. He has not returned since and his Thai passport has been revoked. He is believed to use a Montenegrin passport to travel between homes in Dubai, London, Hong Kong and Singapore. Thaksin remains a galvanising force for his party and a canny political operator. The clan have clung on in Thailand's treacherous political game for more than a decade despite two coups, deadly protests, a cascade of legal cases and asset seizures. A conviction - and jail - for Yingluck, 50, would be a gut punch to the Shinawatra political dynasty. Billionaires and generals Yingluck's flagship rice subsidy poured cash on her family's rural political heartland, paying up to twice the market rate for the grain. But it was beset by graft and led to billions of dollars of losses. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges, saying she is the victim of a "subtle political game." To many supporters Yingluck is finally emerging from her elder brother's shadow, drawing on a star quality throughout her 18 month trial absent amongst the gloomy cast of ageing generals who rule Thailand. Rumours of her flight were met with understanding from supporters who lingered outside the court. "The Thai prime minister has done her best, she has sacrificed a lot," said 64-year-old Seksan Chalitaporn. "Now the people have to fight for themselves." If she has escaped, some of Yingluck's enemies will rue the chance to convict and sentence a leading figure from a dynasty accused of graft and nepotism. Supporters of ousted former Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra wait for her at the Supreme Court in Bangkok Credit: REUTERS In a Facebook post on Thursday Yingluck asked her followers to stay home to avoid any incidents stoked by people with "ill-intention against the country and us". The Shinawatra family emerged as a political force in 2001 when billionaire patriarch Thaksin swept to power. He jump-started the economy and provided the most extensive pro-poor welfare schemes in Thai history. But critics accused him of using political power to further his business interests. He remains loathed by the Bangkok royalist elite but cherished by the rural poor. A coup toppled him in 2006 and he fled overseas. Historically the Shinawatras have been able to mobilise huge crowds of supporters - known as the "Red Shirts" - to take to the streets when the family's political fortunes have waned. But three years of repressive junta rule has successfully quashed any widespread opposition to the military for now. The country's democratic future also looks bleak, with a junta-scripted constitution severely cramping the power of any future elected governments. The junta has trailed elections for next year, but the timetable has repeatedly slipped.

U.S. retailers hit as immigration worries weigh on Hispanic spendingBy Richa Naidu CHICAGO (Reuters) - Many U.S. Hispanics are venturing out only to buy essential goods and are cutting back on discretionary spending, worried about possible harassment by immigration or law enforcement officials since the election of U.S. President Donald Trump, according to community groups, research firms and retailers. Qatar defies Saudi Arabia by restoring diplomatic ties with Iran

Posted: 24 Aug 2017 12:32 PM PDT

Qatar defies Saudi Arabia by restoring diplomatic ties with IranQatar has defied Saudi Arabia by strengthening its diplomatic ties with Iran - rather than cutting them back as Saudi Arabia and its allies have demanded. Saudi Arabia and three other Arab states have been blockading Qatar since early June and have demanded that Qatar curb its ties with Iran, as well as shut down its al-Jazeera television network and expel extremists from its territory.  Rather than give in to the blockading countries' demands, Qatar announced on Thursday that it was restoring full diplomatic relations with Iran and sending its ambassador back to Tehran for the first time since 2016.  "The state of Qatar expressed its aspiration to strengthen bilateral relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran in all fields," The Qatari foreign ministry said. There was no immediate response from Saudi Arabia or its allies in Bahrain, UAE and Egypt to the diplomatic move.  Qatar has been under blockade for nearly three months Credit:  REUTERS/Edgar Su/File Photo The act of defiance came amid suspicions among Qatar's leaders that Saudi Arabia might be trying to engineer a palace coup against its emir,  Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. Their fears were raised after Saudi Arabia's powerful crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, met with an obscure Qatari royal for in Jeddah last week.  The royal, Abdullah al-Thani, has no role in the Qatari government and is from a branch of the royal family that was pushed out of power during a 1972 coup.  Abdullah had previously lived in Saudi Arabia and at the meeting spoke warmly of "brotherly relations rooted in history" between the two countries.  Prince Mohammed responded by opening the Saudi land border to Muslim pilgrims from Qatar who wanted to make the Hajj journey to Mecca, and offering to fly other pilgrims directly to Saudi  Arabia.  Saudi Arabia's powerful Prince Mohammed bin Salman (left) met with a relatively unknown Qatari royal, Abdullah bin Ali bin Jassim al-Thani Credit: HANDOUT/AFP/Getty Images The unusual meeting between the powerful Saudi and the little-known Qatari quickly prompted suspicions in Doha that Prince Mohammed might be hoping to install Abdullah or someone else from his family as Qatar's new leader.  Gerd Nonneman, a professor of International Relations and Gulf Studies at Georgetown University in Qatar, said the meeting was more likely intended as a "propaganda ploy" by Saudi Arabia intended to "needle the Qatari leadership".   While Saudi Arabia and Iran are archrivals - and are opposing sides in conflicts across the Middle East - there are some indications of a slight thaw. The two countries foreign ministers met recently and the two sides are planning mutual diplomatic visits next month for the first time since January 2016.  Diplomatic relations collapsed after Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran in protest at Saudi Arabia's execution of a prominent Shia cleric.  Both sides withdrew their diplomats during the crisis and Qatar pulled out its own ambassador in solidarity with Saudi Arabia. A group of Saudi diplomats will visit Tehran to inspect the country's embassy there while a group of Iranians will do the same in Riyadh.

As Syria war tightens, U.S. and Russia military hotlines hummingBy Phil Stewart AL UDEID AIR BASE, Qatar (Reuters) - Even as tensions between the United States and Russia fester, there is one surprising place where their military-to-military contacts are quietly weathering the storm: Syria. It has been four months since U.S. President Donald Trump ordered cruise missile strikes against a Syrian airfield after an alleged chemical weapons attack. In June, the U.S. military shot down a Syrian fighter aircraft, the first U.S. downing of a manned jet since 1999, and also shot down two Iranian-made drones that threatened U.S.-led coalition forces.

Police officer pictured comforting refugee during eviction protests in Rome

Police officer pictured comforting refugee during eviction protests in Rome A rare moment of tenderness is exchanged between an Italian policeman and a refugee woman as police fired water cannons at migrants protesting their eviction from a building in Rome. The officer intervened to comfort the crying woman as some refugees threw bottles, stones and even gas canisters at police, who responded with jets of water. The clashes broke out in the capital's Piazza Indipendenza, where refugees, many of them Eritreans who have fled one of Africa's most brutal regimes, have been camped out for days. Italian police use water cannons to disperse migrants in Rome Credit: Ansa The confrontation left the piazza strewn with blankets, mattresses and overturned rubbish bins, while small fires burned on the pavements. Around 400 refugees were evicted at the weekend from a building that they have occupied for the last four years; many had been sleeping rough since. Rome city council said they had been offered alternative accommodation but many of the refugees wanted to remain in the area. Police used water cannons during the protest Credit: Ansa City authorities accused radical Left-wing activists of "infiltrating" the refugees and persuading them to turn down offers of accommodation. Two refugees were arrested – one of them as he was giving an interview to an Italian television station. A Catholic charity, the Missionaries of San Carlo Borromeo, said the refugees were "victims twice over" – once for having fled their homeland in the Horn of Africa and again for the eviction. The refugees, many of them Eritrean, were evicted at the weekend and have been sleeping rough since Credit: Ansa Medecins Sans Frontieres accused the police of using disproportionate force, but the police said they had to deploy water cannons because of the danger of gas canisters exploding. Many Italians are losing patience with the huge number of migrants and refugees their country has taken in over the last few years. So far this year nearly 100,000 have arrived, while last year the figure was 181,000. Around 200,000 migrants are living in state-run reception centres around the country. With neighbouring countries such as France and Austria tightening border controls, the migrants are trapped and Italy feels abandoned by the rest of Europe.

U.S. fighter pilots in Afghanistan prepare for more air strikesBy Josh Smith BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (Reuters) - For the fighter pilots at the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan, President Donald Trump's new strategy for the war should mean escalating an already surging air campaign, and possibly including an unrestrained offensive against the Taliban. The number of U.S. air strikes in Afghanistan has already dramatically spiked since Trump took office in January, from 1,074 in all of last year to 2,244 as of August 20 this year.  After a months-long review of his Afghanistan policy, Trump committed the United States last week to an open-ended conflict in the country and promised a stepped-up campaign against the Taliban insurgents.
