Briton who died fighting Isil caused 'alarm bells to ring' when he tidied bedroom, mother tells inquest

Posted: 02 Aug 2017 08:16 AM PDT

Briton who died fighting Isil caused 'alarm bells to ring' when he tidied bedroom, mother tells inquestThe mother of a young Briton who died fighting alongside Kurdish forces in Syria became suspicious because it was unusual for him to have tidied his room, an inquest heard. Ryan Lock,  20, from Chichester, West Sussex, killed himself to avoid falling hostage to Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) militants, a coroner was told. His mother, Catherine Lock, told the inquest how her son had given few clues about his intentions to fight Isil in Syria. But she said that one of the things that "set off alarm bells" was the fact he had spring cleaned his room before he left. She said her son became secretive before he left home and spent a lot of time on his computer - and unusually tidied his room. Ryan Lock killed himself to avoid falling hostage to Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) militants Credit: Hampshire Police "That was one of the things that I really questioned," added Ms Lock. "I actually said, 'Are you planning on coming back because you have spring cleaned your room?'. "Deep down, there were things setting off alarm bells but I wasn't getting the answers." A coroner said Mr Lock died a hero last December fighting with the People's Defence Units (YPG) in the northern city of Raqqa, considered to be Isil's de facto capital. Former chef Mr Lock, who had no previous military experience, joined the Kurdish militia after telling his family he was going backpacking to Turkey in August last year. An inquest in Portsmouth, Hampshire, heard that after being wounded and surrounded by Isil fighters, he turned his gun on himself to avoid being captured and suffering a "frightening and painful death". Recording a narrative verdict, Portsmouth and South East Hampshire coroner David Horsley said Mr Lock had suffered a leg wound that left him at risk of falling into the hands of a "cruel and ruthless" enemy. Mr Horsley said: "He was not prepared to let that happen and used his own weapon to avoid capture. That can only be viewed as a brave action." The coroner described Mr Lock as a "heroic young man" and added: "He died doing something he quite clearly believed passionately in." In the months before he died, Mr Lock had kept in touch with his family from Syria via Facebook Messenger, sending them pictures and updates on his military training. But after losing contact with him, Mr Lock's father Jon Plater found images online of his son with an Isil fighter standing over his body, and his death was later confirmed, the inquest heard. Pathologist Dr Basil Purdue said Mr Lock's cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the head. Mr Lock flew from Luton to Istanbul on Flight KK6004 on August 24 before boarding a connecting flight to Iraq. Ryan Lock's mother Catherine Lock arrives at Portsmouth Inquest Court on Wednesday Credit: Solent His mother recalled him remarking how bad the situation was in Syria after watching a television news item. But Ms Lock said: "It wasn't something he would constantly comment on, but he was quite a quiet person. "He could be quite sheltered, and he would be quite careful what he said." Ms Lock said her son only revealed a few days beforehand that he was intending to go travelling - but kept secret his plan to head to Syria with the YPG. She said: "He just said that he had planned this for ages and that he had time off work. He said he would be going for a few weeks, maybe a month. "And when I found out he was going to Turkey I said, 'You do realise that's right next to Syria where there is a war'. I hadn't twigged that was exactly his plan, to head to Syria." Mr Lock had been in Turkey for about a day when he contacted his mother revealing he was going to Syria with the YPG, which she initially interpreted as a joke. That's when I absolutely panicked." She said her son tried to reassure her by saying the YPG needed a chef and that he wanted to become a medic. She also tried not to be negative for fear of him severing contact, adding: "I remember saying to him, 'I'm proud of you but for God's sake come home safely'." Ms Lock said she maintained contact with her son once a week or once a fortnight via his pay-as-you-go phone but he did not disclose that he was involved in combat. She revealed the last contact she had with her son was last December 6, and as days passed without hearing from him, an American journalist informed her of fatalities in Syria. Amid panic and worry, Mr Plater later came across images clearly showing their dead son on an Arabic website. Mr Plater said: "You could tell straight away it was him." He added: "I phoned the YPG a few times to see what was going on, and I spoke to Ryan's commander who said that he was surrounded and that he shot himself." Kurdish supporters of Ryan Lock at Heathrow Airport Ms Lock said she had no respect for the YPG, saying: "I've always been angry towards the YPG because if it wasn't for them, Ryan wouldn't be dead. "They helped him to get to Syria. He would never have been able to get there on his own. From what I gather, it had been planned for quite a long time." Dozens of people, including members of the Kurdish community, held roses and framed pictures of Mr Lock at Heathrow Airport as his body was repatriated to the UK in February. Supporters of the YPJ female fighting force said his "memory will forever live on in our struggle for the freedom of Syria and our hope for change in the whole world". And YPG general command member Mihyedin Xirki said Mr Lock, who used the nom de guerre Berxwedan Givara, was a "martyr" who died "putting up a brave fight". SEHID NAMIRIN! pic.twitter.com/yLYPbgpmTc— Kurdish Solidarity (@Hevallo) February 18, 2017 The inquest heard that following his death, a letter was passed to Mr Lock's family by someone called AJ Woodhead. Believed to be a Canadian, he is thought to have travelled to Syria to fight alongside Mr Lock and the YPG. In the letter, AJ Woodhead, who British police have been unable to trace, said Mr Lock "died a true hero" and that in any other war he would have received a medal. The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against all travel to Syria, saying the situation remains "extremely volatile and dangerous". Four Britons are believed to have died fighting IS with the Kurds in Syria. The latest was 22-year-old Luke Rutter, from Birkenhead, who died in Raqqa on July 5. In a final video message, Mr Rutter apologised for lying to his loved ones about going to fight. Mr Lock's parents declined to comment following the hearing.

Apple posts Q3 earnings: Profits jump by 17%

Apple posts Q3 earnings: Profits jump by 17%

Amid a flurry of seemingly endless iPhone 8 rumors, Apple earlier this afternoon posted its earnings report for the company's June quarter. When all was said and done, Apple posted revenue of $45.4 billion, an operating profit of $8.7 billion and EPS of $1.67. As a point of comparison, Apple during the same quarter a year ago posted quarterly revenue of $42.4 billion and net income of $7.8 billion, all of which translated to an EPS of $1.42 for the quarter. All told, Apple's profits, year over year, shot up an impressive 17%.

Putting Apple's financial performance over the past three months into perspective, analysts on Wall St. were expecting Apple to post revenue in the $44 billion to $46 billion range with EPS projections falling in the $1.57 range. Clearly, it was an impressively solid quarter for Apple.

Per usual, the most telling aspect of Apple's earnings report centers on the health of Apple's iPhone business. That said, iPhone sales for the quarter checked in at 41.02 million units, just a tad higher than the 40.3 million units Apple sold during the year ago quarter.

"With revenue up 7 percent year-over-year, we're happy to report our third consecutive quarter of accelerating growth and an all-time quarterly record for Services revenue," Tim Cook said in a press release."

As for other Apple products, iPad and Mac sales checked in at 11.4 million and 4.2 million, respectively. During the same quarter last year, iPad and Mac sales came in at 9.95 million and 4.25 million. Clearly, the bigger takeaway here is that the iPad line has finally seen some growth after a seemingly endless string of quarters of declining sales. Year over year, iPad sales increased by 15%. Compared to Apple's March quarter, iPad sales increased by an even more impressive 28%.

Meanwhile, revenue from Apple's range of services continues to grow. For the quarter gone by, Apple's services generated $7.2 billion in revenue, representing an impressive 22% increase compared to the same quarter a year ago.

Shares of Apple are up more than 5.5% in after hours trading.

Looking ahead, Apple provided the following guidance for its September quarter:

  • revenue between $49 billion and $52 billion
  • gross margin between 37.5 percent and 38 percent
  • operating expenses between $6.7 billion and $6.8 billion
  • other income/(expense) of $500 million
  • tax rate of 25.5 percent

Bride 'pulls gun out of wedding dress and points it at groom's head' This couple's honeymoon period is definitely over. Weddings are meant to be a time for love and celebration, but a bride's big day was ruined when she was arrested on assault charges over an alleged gun incident. Tennessee bride Kate Prichard allegedly pulled a gun out of her wedding dress and put it to her groom's head during a drunken motel argument, just hours after the wedding. The 25-year-old pointed the 9mm handgun at her new husband James Burton's head and pulled the trigger, however it was not loaded, police say. The bride (not pictured) was arrested on her wedding day  Credit: Reuters  Police were called to the scene after the new bride then loaded the gun and fired it in the air, it is alleged. "She pulled out of her wedding dress, a 9mm pistol. Pointed it at her husband's head and pulled the trigger," Sgt. Kyle Evans from the Murfreesboro Police Department told NewsChannel 5. "[The] responding officer let the husband know the honeymoon was over and his new wife was going to jail. "Both were very uncooperative with authorities. It was actually a witness who pointed us in the right direction," he added. Prichard has been charged with aggravated domestic assault. Desperate bride marries wedding guest instead of groom

All eyes on Venezuela military after protests, voteBy Girish Gupta and Anggy Polanco CARACAS/SAN CRISTOBAL, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan soldiers are increasingly weary of the popular backlash against their role in quelling anti-government protests and all eyes are on the military to see if it will remain loyal to President Nicolas Maduro. Nearly five months of demonstrations failed to stop Maduro carrying out a weekend vote for a Constitutional Assembly that opponents say will cement his dictatorship in the OPEC nation. The opposition is now looking towards the military to see if it will turn against the government and pressure Maduro to enact its demands, which include presidential elections.

Verizon is screwing internet users who aren’t even its own customers

Posted: 01 Aug 2017 11:57 AM PDT

Verizon is screwing internet users who aren't even its own customers

By now, we're used to our local internet monopolist taking its pound of flesh in return for access to a basic utility. We also know that maintaining that monopoly -- and crushing any attempts at competition -- is the key to keeping those annual profits ticking.

So I guess that it shouldn't be surprising to hear that Verizon is allegedly going out of its way to stop Charter from deploying broadband in New York State. But the brazenly anti-competitive practices outlined in a complaint from Charter to the NY State Public Service Commission still makes for surprising reading.

The problems surround Charter's need to attach wires or equipment to roadside poles owned or co-owned by Verizon. Attaching to existing poles is commonplace, and generally a right supported by law to prevent our streets turning into a mess of competing utility poles.

In order to make way for Charter's equipment, Verizon has to move some of its own equipment on poles. The standard process is that Charter identifies the work that has to be done, applies to Verizon to get that to happen, pays Verizon for the manpower and time involved, and then can finally attach its own equipment to the poles.

It's already a bureaucratic nightmare, but in a complaint to the PSC, Charter claims that Verizon is being uniquely annoying:

"Since the Buildout Condition took effect in May 2016, Charter has submitted 822 pole attachment applications to Verizon, requesting permits to attach to 55,856 poles—nearly a third of all of the poles that Charter needs to access in order to meet its buildout requirements. In connection with those applications, Charter has paid $409,296 to Verizon in application fees. To date, however, Verizon has approved only 179 of those applications and has released only 4,048 poles to Charter—a mere 7 percent of poles for which Charter has submitted applications to Verizon. Verizon has not conducted any pre-construction surveys for 51 percent of Charter's applications (representing 62 percent of the poles), despite accepting Charter's payment of application fees to pay for such work."

Verizon's motivation for dragging its feet is obvious: Charter is trying to bring internet and TV service into regions where Verizon is the only high-speed provider, and competition has this nasty habit of driving prices down. "The cumulative effect of Verizon's conduct has been to frustrate Charter's ability to bring its services to additional areas in the state and offer competitive alternatives to 'bottleneck' providers—including competing against Verizon itself," Charter told Ars Technica.

In fairness, Charter isn't trying to expand to new areas out of the goodness of its heart. The broadband rollout is a condition imposed on Charter due to its purchase of Time Warner Cable. Regulators often put "competition" clauses on new mergers to try and ensure that in return for two companies merging, they also keep expanding to provide competition. In Charter's case, it was supposed to expand service to 36,250 new houses by May, and a total of 145,000 by May 2020. Charter says that Verizon is standing in the way of its expansion, and wants the PSC to use its enforcement powers to speed things up.

Google released some fascinating data about the coming total eclipse

Posted: 01 Aug 2017 05:42 PM PDT

Google released some fascinating data about the coming total eclipseSometimes the data just falls into place.  Data from Google shows that people around the United States are increasingly searching for information about the upcoming total solar eclipse.  But more than that, the people who are doing the most searching are actually the ones in the path of the eclipse, set to take place on August 21.  SEE ALSO: Your most basic and burning questions about next month's solar eclipse, answered That trend is so clear that the Google map showing searches for the word "eclipse" in the last seven days actually vaguely tracks the path the total eclipse will take across the country. This makes a lot of sense, right? The people most likely to search for "eclipse" or information about it are the ones in the path of the event itself. It's always fun to see a dataset reflect something you can intuitively understand. If you break down the data by metro region, the path carved through the country (and the search data) becomes even more clear. Idaho Falls-Pocatello, Idaho — which is in the path of the eclipse — is the metro area with the most interest in the eclipse in the past week, according to the search information, but if you widen that out to look at a search breakdown by state, Oregon has the most interest in the "eclipse" search. A map of the eclipse.Image: nasaOregon is actually the first state that will experience the total phase of the eclipse, when the moon fully passes in between the Earth and the sun, casting its dark shadow on the surface of the planet.  Totality will begin along the Oregon coast at 10:15 a.m. PT. The total solar eclipse will pass over about a dozen states before moving out to sea after leaving the South Carolina coast at about 3 p.m. ET. August 21 will mark the first time a total solar eclipse has been visible from the contiguous U.S. since 1979. Even if you aren't in the relatively small path of the total eclipse, you'll still be able to see at least a partial eclipse from any spot in North America. (Just be sure to grab some serious eclipse glasses to protect your eyes.)  WATCH: Sun spots

Tensions rise as Kenya poll campaign enters final stretch

Tensions rise as Kenya poll campaign enters final stretchKenya's election campaign enters a tense final week Tuesday, with a tight race between incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta and his rival Raila Odinga leading to intensified personal attacks and rigging accusations. The vote comes 10 years after Odinga claimed an election was stolen from him and the country plunged into two months of politically-motivated ethnic clashes, which along with a police crackdown on protests left more than 1,100 dead and 600,000 displaced. Voting in Kenya largely takes place along communal lines, and both Kenyatta and Odinga are heading formidable alliances of different ethnic blocs with closely matched numbers, meaning turnout will be crucial to either side's success.

Elephants and tigers kill one human a day in India, as growing population squeezes habitat

Elephants and tigers kill one human a day in India, as growing population squeezes habitatEndangered elephants and tigers are killing one person a day in India as humans put a growing squeeze on their habitat, according to new government figures. But man is in turn killing a leopard a day as the man-animal tussle for space reaches new heights. India has lost vast swathes of forests to urbanisation in recent decades, forcing animals into human-occupied zones. According to the environment ministry, 1,144 people were killed in attacks across India in 1,143 days between April 2014 and May this year. And there is no sign of the toll being cut. The ministry said 345 tigers and 84 elephants were killed in the same period, mostly in poacher attacks. Elephants are targeted for their tusks. A man with a tranquilizer gun approaches as a leopard attacks a man identified by Indian media as wildlife conservationist Sanjay Gubbi at a private school on the outskirts of Bangalore Credit: AFP Siddhanta Das, the ministry's director general of forests, said human encroachment into animal territory was causing the deaths. "We are running awareness campaigns to minimise the casualties," Das told AFP. Elephants accounted for 1,052 human deaths and tigers 92, according to the figures released to parliament last week. West Bengal state accounted for more than a quarter of deaths. The eastern state has nearly 800 elephants and is also home to famed Bengal tigers. A leopard attacking and wounding Indian labourer Pintu Dey in Guwahati in 2012 Credit: AFP Last year a herd of wild elephants went on an hours-long rampage in West Bengal, killing five people and damaging vehicles and homes before being subdued with tranquilliser darts. But tensions are also mounting elsewhere across the country. An elephant trampled to death four people, including a 12-year-old girl, in a village in southern Tamil Nadu state in June. There have also been cases of elephants knocking people off scooters. Most attacks on humans by elephants take place in so-called elephant corridors which they have used for centuries but are now being overrun by humans. An elephant attacking an Indian man in a field in Baghasole village, in Burdwan district in West Bengal state, in March 2016 Credit:  AFP According to National Crime Records Bureau statistics, nearly 950 people were killed in animal attacks in 2015. But those statistics did not specify the nature of the incidents. India has nearly 30,000 elephants and is home to half the world's tiger population with some 2,226 of the big cats roaming its reserves, according to the last official count in 2014. Both are endangered species. "Rampant killing of wildlife is ongoing in India. Hundreds of leopards, tigers and elephants are killed for their body parts," Tito Joseph of the Wildlife Protection Society of India told AFP. An Indian policeman being helped by colleagues after being attacked by a leopard in the Maligoan area of Guwahati in 2015 Credit:  AFP Fatality figures for the estimated 12,000 to 14,000 leopards living in the wild are becoming alarming, according to a 2015 census. More than 1,436 of the animals have been killed since January 2014, according to the WPSI. There are no figures on the number of humans killed by leopards, but experts say there are hundreds each year.

Your cable company is robbing you every month, but we'll tell you how to stop them

Like millions of other Americans across the country, you're probably paying more for home internet service than you should be. No, we're not simply talking about the inflated monthly fees ISPs charge for actual home internet service, because that's supply and demand. We're talking about the extra $8 to $10 you spend each month on your modem rental fee. You probably don't even realize it. Go look at your bill… it's there. What you might not know, however, is that you can purchase your own compatible modem for next to nothing, and that monthly fee with vanish as soon as you return your leased modem to your cable provider. There are a bunch of good options out there, but we recommend the NETGEAR CM400 (8x4) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, which is discounted right now on Amazon and compatible with every major ISP in the US.

Here are some key details from the product page:

Moldova bars Russian deputy PM

Moldova bars Russian deputy PMMoldova on Wednesday declared Russian deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin persona non grata in the wake of a diplomatic spat that saw his plane barred from flying over Romania. Rogozin was supposed to make a visit to Moldova's pro-Russian figurehead president on Friday but the passenger plane he was travelling on was blocked by EU member Romania from crossing its airspace. Bucharest said it had turned the commercial liner back because Rogozin is under an EU travel ban over Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region in 2014.

Hyperloop pod travels 192mph in maiden journey

Posted: 02 Aug 2017 07:52 AM PDT

Hyperloop pod travels 192mph in maiden journeyThe ultra-fast Hyperloop is one step closer to becoming a reality after its pod travelled 192 miles per hour in its maiden journey.   Hyperloop One said its prototype for the high-speed transport system, which could travel from London to Edinburgh in 50 minutes, reached the speed on a 500-metre-long test track in the Nevada desert.  The test marks the first time Hyperloop One has propelled one of its carriages along the tube, as well as the fastest journey for the technology. The company completed its first trial in May, which involved a smaller trolley reaching a top speed of 70 miles per hour. Hyperloop test It is a significant step in the development of the Hyperloop, a transport system first conceived by Elon Musk in 2015 that involves levitating pods travelling through a vacuum at 750 miles per hour. "This is the beginning, and the dawn of a new era of transportation," said Shervin Pishevar, co-founder of Hyperloop One. "We've reached historic speeds of 192 miles per hour and we're excited to finally show the world the XP-1 going into the Hyperloop One tube."  Prototypes for the futuristic mode of transport are being developed by a host of rival companies and research institutions. Hyperloop One is the first to test a working model of its magnetic levitating pods.  Hyperloop One said the first generation of its levitating pod, which was unveiled last month, accelerated for 300 metres, reaching 192 miles per hour before coming to a halt. The XP-1 pod is 8.7 metres long, 2.4 metres wide and 2.7 metres tall.  FAQ | Hyperloop Although Hyperloop One more than doubled its previous record with the run, it fell short of the 250 miles per hour target it had set. The trip brings the Hyperloop close to the 200 miles per hour of Japan's bullet train, but is still 50 miles per hour slower than the planned HS2.  "We're excited about the prospects and the reception we've received from governments around the world to help solve their mass transportation and infrastructure challenges," said Rob Lloyd, chief executive of Hyperloop One. Proposed UK routes for the Hyperloop  Credit: Hyperloop One He added the company plans to discuss the technology with partners, customers and governments following the success of the trial. It is now looking to commercialise the transport system, which is still being developed. Hyperloop One said earlier this year that it will be some time before it becomes a reality because of the complexity of the technology.  Before it can accelerate to 750 miles per hour it will need to extend the 500 metre test track, built this year, as well as fine-tune the system.  The next phase of tests will focus on solving practical problems such as creating an air lock, rather than increasing speed, it said.  The California-based transport innovation firm has proposed nine Hyperloop routes in Europe, including three in the UK: London to Edinburgh, Cardiff to Glasgow, and Glasgow to Liverpool.  The crazy future of transport - in pictures

Bangladesh doubles wildlife sanctuary to save its tigersBangladesh has more than doubled the size of the wildlife sanctuary in the world's largest mangrove forest to try to protect endangered Bengal tigers whose numbers have fallen sharply, officials said Tuesday. More than half, or 52 percent, of the 6,017 square kilometre (2,325 square mile) Sundarbans -- one of the largest habitats of the tigers -- has been declared a sanctuary this week, said the government's chief forest conservator Shafiul Alam. The Sundarbans, which also straddles parts of eastern India, is home to some rare animals including the Irrawaddy dolphins and the Bengal tigers, both declared endangered because of poaching and a loss of their habitat.

Trump could withdraw troops from Afghanistan in defiance of earlier recommendations from military officialsDonald Trump is said to be considering withdrawing troops from Afghanistan – less than three months after senior Trump administration and military officials recommended expanding the US military's strength in the country. Although the administration was expected to have determined its strategy for Afghanistan by mid-July, officials continue to debate whether or not to deploy more troops to aid Afghan security forces and push back against a resurgent Taliban. The US military presence in Afghanistan began in 2001, in response to the 11 September terror attacks.
