Winner of $758 million US lottery Powerball says she plans to celebrate by hiding in bed

Posted: 24 Aug 2017 11:01 AM PDT

Winner of $758 million US lottery Powerball says she plans to celebrate by hiding in bedThe single biggest lottery jackpot winner in history has received her cheque for $758 million (£591m), and told of her shock at her new-found fortune. Mavis Wanczyck, 53, was asked how she would celebrate, and replied, laughing: "I'm going to go and hide in my bed." Ms Wanczyck, who has worked in the same medical centre in Massachusetts for 32 years, said that she had already resigned from her job on fulfilling her "pipe dream". "Actually I just happened to find out," she said, beaming and bashful beside her mother and sister. "I was leaving work at night. And my colleague Rob said I bet someone won with these numbers, as they could be birthdays. "And I was reading them out, and I said 'I've won!' The ticket which won her the largest single-winner jackpot in North American history was bought in her hometown of Chicopee, 90 miles west of Boston. Ms Wanczyk was joined by state treasurer Deb Goldberg and her mother and two sisters  Credit: AP She said the numbers were "kind of random, maybe birthdays." "There's a thing between me and my mum and stepfather, and we all go out for dinner once a week and play Keno. And our number is four. So that was one of them." The mother of a 31-year-old daughter and a 26-year-old son, Ms Wanczyck said she was driving to the cheque presentation ceremony on Thursday and telling herself: "This isn't true. It can't be.'" "Then I'm like: it is me. And I'm scared. But it'll be ok." Asked what she would do now, she replied: "I want to sit back and relax. I want some time. "I just wanted to do this, get it over, and then I'd be ok." She told the local media gathered for the press conference that her financial situation before the win was "ok." "I'm not the richest person in the world, or the poorest person in the world," she said. Winners can choose to receive the money in either 30 annual allotments over 29 years or to get it all at once in a single payment for a smaller amount. The lump sum value of Ms Wanczyck's win is $480 million (£374m), but she has not said how she wishes to take the money. The Pride Station & Store in Chicopee Credit: AP She had no plans for a holiday yet, she said, but bought a car in September and now plans to pay the loan off in full. The Massachusetts state lottery initially said, on Wednesday night, that the jackpot had been won with a ticket bought in Watertown. Seven hours later, at 7:50am on Thursday, they issued a correction, saying the ticket was sold in Chicopee. One Watertown winner did, however, win $1 million. "When manually recording the names of the retailers that sold the jackpot winning ticket and the $1 million winning tickets, the information was transcribed incorrectly," said Michael Sweeney, executive director of the Massachusetts state lottery. "We apologise for the confusion this created and remain thrilled that a jackpot winning ticket and two $1 million winning tickets were sold here in Massachusetts." Bob Bolduc, founder of the chain, said the winning ticket was sold to a woman around 2.30pm on Tuesday. The Chicopee store will receive $50,000 for selling the winning ticket, and Mr Bolduc said they plan to donate all of that money to local charities. The largest lottery win in history, the $1.6 billion Powerball, was won in January 2016 and split between three winners. Their lump sum, $327.8m, was smaller than yesterday's win. Chris and Colin Weir, from Largs in Ayrshire, became Britain's biggest ever lottery winners when they took home £161.7m in July 2011.

Venezuela's Maduro calls for military loyalty after US threatVenezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Thursday warned the armed forces in his crisis-hit country against "fissures" in their ranks, ahead of war games seen as a show of strength after US President Donald Trump's threat of military action. Maduro launched the warning in a speech to his top military leadership, including General Vladimir Padrino, his defense minister, and General Remigio Ceballos, commander of operational strategy, two days before the drills begin Saturday. "We must be clear, especially for the youth in the military, that we must close ranks within the homeland -- that this is no time for any fissures and that those with doubts should leave the armed forces immediately," Maduro said.

This ancient tablet might rewrite this history of math as we know it

This ancient tablet might rewrite this history of math as we know it

Thankfully, very few of us have to bother with trigonometry on a daily basis, but regardless of how much you may have dreaded studying it (or any math, for that matter) in school, it's still fundamental to our modern understanding of measurements. Hipparchus, a Greek mathematician and astronomer whose work dates to between 160 and 120 BC, is credited as the father of trigonometry, but a nearly 4,000-year-old stone tablet may be about to totally rewrite the history books.

The tablet, which is called Plimpton 322, was recovered in modern day Iraq roughly a hundred years ago. It's a mathematical table that is thought to have been written somewhere around 1800 BC, and it's one of the very earliest examples of Babylonian mathematics. In a new research effort led by a team from the University of New South Wales, the tablet is being hailed as one of the very first examples of trigonometric calculations. The group's research was published in the journal Historia Mathematica.

"We trace the origins of trigonometry to the Old Babylonian era, between the 19th and 16th centuries B.C.E," the paper explains. "This is well over a millennium before Hipparchus is said to have fathered the subject with his 'table of chords'."

The tablet is undoubtedly an extremely important artifact, but it has a problem: it's not complete. The tablet is only a piece of what is thought to have been a much larger table containing over twice the number of rows and several more columns.

From what remains, the researchers have dubbed it one of the most accurate trigonometric tables ever, thanks to its reliance on ratio-based measurements instead of angles, but others aren't convinced.

Duncan Melville, a professor of mathematics at St. Lawrence University, told National Geographic that it's hard to determine the tablet is really based on trigonometric at all.

"Apart from the column headings, the tablet just consists of columns of numbers, and this invites a great deal of purely mathematical speculation," Melville told National Geographic. "Some of the different interpretations for construction of the tablet are mathematically equivalent and so just having the output on the tablet does not tell you much about the process used to generate that output."

Islamic State urges Muslim extremists to wage war in Philippine city of Marawi

Posted: 24 Aug 2017 07:35 PM PDT

Islamic State urges Muslim extremists to wage war in Philippine city of MarawiThe Islamic State terrorist group has released a new video calling on Muslim extremists in Southeast Asia to wage holy war in the besieged Philippine city of Marawi, while denouncing America and Australia for aiding the country's military. Its release comes as the battle between Isil-linked militants and government forces in the southern Muslim city of Marawi enters its fourth month, fuelling fears that the terrorist group is trying to set up a regional base in Southeast Asia after crushing defeats in the Middle East. In the seven-minute long video, produced by Isil's Al Hayat media centre, a fighter identified as Abul-Yaman from Marawi, appeals to Muslim brothers in East Asia, particularly those in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand and Singapore to migrate to the city "to perform jihad." The graphic and chilling footage, which depicts dead Philippine soldiers and militant "martyrs" dying in battle, is accompanied by an American-accented narrator who rails against the "subjugation" of Muslims in the Philippines. It opens with scenes of young men engaged in heavy fighting amid the city ruins, brandishing AK-47s through incoming mortar fire and air strikes. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte  gives a pep talk to troops fighting the extremist Maute group in Marawi. Credit: Handout/Reuters In scenes reminiscent of the destruction of Mosul, Iraq, it then switches to the destruction of a Catholic church, showing militants tearing down a cross, smashing statues of the Virgin Mary and ripping up posters of the pope. "We will make revenge...We will be in Rome, in'shallah," shouts a masked militant. The terrorist group then turns its ire on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, for running to "his masters, the defenders of the cross, America, along with their regional guard dog Australia" to beg them for help. It accuses the Philippines' allies of aiding Duterte in "a malicious air campaign" against the Islamic State. The fighting in Marawi has put Canberra on edge, with rising concerns that the growth of Isil in the region could herald more terrorist attacks in Australia. In June Australia deployed two surveillance planes to Mindanao province, where Marawi is located, to help the Philippine military in the battle. Earlier this week, Australian spy chief Nick Warner also met President Duterte in an unusually public visit to discuss progress. The Philippines regional neighbours are also nervous. Malaysia's top terrorist officer, Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, told Channel NewsAsia that the new video was "powerful" and would "inflame the passions" of Muslim fanatics. "Since the Marawi siege started, we have seen increased activities from IS cells in Malaysia trying to enter into the southern Philippines," he said.

Justin Trudeau tones down warm welcome for migrants as Canada struggles to cope with influx

Justin Trudeau tones down warm welcome for migrants as Canada struggles to cope with influxJustin Trudeau has sought to tone down the warm welcome he promised to migrants, after arrivals at the Canadian border hit 250 a day, leaving immigration officials struggling to cope with the influx. The Canadian prime minister tweeted shortly after President Donald Trump announced the halt of the US refugee programme that Canada would still be a haven. "To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada," he said. To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada— Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) January 28, 2017 But since the start of the year more than 11,300 people have crossed into Canada by foot from the US, with the surge due in large part to fears about Mr Trump's immigration policy. Canada is on track to record the most refugee claims in a decade. The majority – around 85 per cent, according to Canadian officials – are from Haiti. In May Mr Trump floated the idea of rescinding a long-standing agreement to allow Haitians to remain in the country, meaning that a possible 58,000 Haitians could be deported in 2018. "For someone to successfully seek asylum it's not about economic migration," said Mr Trudeau, in an attempt to make economic migrants reconsider. If they are seeking asylum we'll evaluate them on the basis of what it is to be a refugee or asylum seeker." More than 6,000 people have skirted border checkpoints to enter Canada since the start of July. Overwhelmed by these numbers, the government has increased patrols along the border and added immigration staff to process claims. Montreal's Olympic stadium has been turned into a temporary welcome center, and the military has been deployed to set up a 500-person camp on the border. Asylum seekers are shown next to tents at the Canada-United States border in Lacolle, Quebec Credit: Graham Hughes/The Canadian Press via AP "You will not be at an advantage if you choose to enter Canada irregularly," said Mr Trudeau. "You must follow the rules, and there are many." Critics have accused Mr Trudeau of encouraging would-be refugees to come to Canada without thinking through the consequences. Michelle Rempel, a politician from the opposition Conservative Party, said it was "completely ridiculous that the Prime Minister of Canada would tout a tent city" to deal with the influx as winter approached.

Civil Rights Groups Sue To Block Indiana From Using Unreliable Process To Purge Voter RollsCivil rights groups are suing Indiana officials to block the state from purging voters from its rolls using a process shown to inaccurately identify voters registered in multiple states. In April, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) signed legislation authorizing election officials to remove voters from the rolls if they were found to be registered in more than one place. According to the legislation, one of the ways officials can identify people who are registered in more than one place is by using Interstate Crosscheck, a system developed by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) that 27 states use to compare voter information.

NATO says Russia should be transparent about its military drillsBy Lidia Kelly and Agnieszka Barteczko WARSAW (Reuters) - NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday the alliance would closely watch Russian military exercises in western Russia and Belarus next month, urging Moscow to be transparent about the drills. The maneuvers, the largest in years, with tanks, naval and air units operating in and around the Baltic and North Sea, have raised NATO's concern that the official number of troops participating might be understated. "We are going to be watching very closely the course of these exercises," Stoltenberg told reporters after meeting Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo on a visit to check on the deployment of the U.S.-led alliance's forces in the country's east.

Scientists have managed to film the adorable super deep-sea snailfish in 4KOne Japanese organisation has gone where no one else has before. The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has filmed a snailfish at a depth of 8,178 meters (26,830 ft) in the Mariana Trench — a record depth for capturing a fish in video footage. SEE ALSO: This newly discovered jellyfish looks like something out of 'Avatar' "We've set a world record for filming a fish at an accurately measured depth," JAMSTEC senior research scientist, Kazumasa Oguri, told the Japan Times. The video was taken with 4K cameras mounted on JAMSTEC's deep-sea research vessel. The purplish-looking Mariana snailfish, who is believed to have visited the trench to feed, was caught on camera, likely attracted by the bait that the scientists placed. These deep sea creatures are known to swim in waters deeper than 7,000 metres. The Japanese institution narrowly beat out efforts by a Chinese academy earlier this year. The Chinese Academy of Sciences had in April filmed a fish at a depth of 8,152 meters in the same trench. According to scientists, it is unlikely that any fish can survive in the oceans at a depth beyond 8,200 metres.  No fish has ever been discovered beyond this point.  WATCH: These smart rings let you make color-specific music on any surface

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 is already looking like a huge success

Posted: 25 Aug 2017 12:51 PM PDT

Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 is already looking like a huge successSome said it couldn't be done, but Samsung somehow managed to dust itself off and emerge relatively unscathed from the unmitigated disaster that was the Galaxy Note 7. A public relations nightmare to say the least, Samsung last year was forced to discontinue and recall the Note 7 amid a slew of reports involving the device spontaneously catching fire and -- in some cases -- exploding and causing bodily harm. While the Note 7 fiasco certainly impacted Samsung's bottom line, it seemingly hasn't done much to dissuade consumers from purchasing other Samsung devices. With the Note 7 saga now firmly in the company's rear view mirror, Samsung earlier this week introduced the Galaxy Note 8. Featuring a gargantuan 6.3-inch display and some impressive internals, the Note 8 runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat and will be released on September 15. So while we may have to wait a bit to see how the Note 8 does sales wise, early indications suggest that Samsung has a hit on its hands. According to a report from Mobile Fun, pre-orders for Note 8 accessories are already trending 30% higher than what the Note 7 experienced last year. The company's press release reads in part:

After a very successful Note 7 launch last year, Mobile Fun had expected to see a downturn in early pre-orders of Note 8 products, due to the issues surrounding the Note 7. However Mobile Fun have already seen a 30% increase in early orders for Note 8 accessories, pointing to a successful outlook for Samsung's latest device.
"We didn't expect to see such large volumes of pre-orders this quickly after all the problems Samsung experienced with the Galaxy Note 7," said Mike Hart of Mobile Fun. "It seems as though the hardcore Note series fans have stuck with Samsung, which is refreshing to see." While we're admittedly only looking at accessory orders, it stands to reason that strong interest in Note 8 accessories points to impressive demand and interest in the device itself. Incidentally, we also heard from a Best Buy tipster that interest in the Note 8 is actually "way higher than the Galaxy S8...even with the extra cost." Meanwhile, a tipster over at T-Mobile told us the following: "Far more people asking about this than the Galaxy S8, especially customers who bought the Galaxy Note 7 wanting to know about deals they can use." As for Samsung's own expectations with the device, Samsung mobile chief DJ Koh anticipates that the Note 8 will be the most successful iteration of the Note yet. Interestingly enough, Koh added that Galaxy S8 sales are about 15% higher than Galaxy S7 sales were last year.
